Erasing and modifying backed up items in Lion.

Hello, does anyone know how I can erase backed up items on a hard drive? I backed up a huge mail folder and now I no longer need it. Lion tells me that I can't modify backed up items. Thanks for your help :-)

Can you copy/restore them to the Desktop and try from there?

You can't uninstall an OS X version. You would have to erase the drive and reinstall a prior OS version. That's why you should never upgrade without having a backup.
However, just about any router in the world should work with Mavericks, without the need of any DVD supplied software.

I don't know what else you could do except report it as others have suggested and pay your customers back. Companies like Adobe don't have the resources to follow up on every individual case of piracy, but they should be interested in tracking down the sources of the big professional counterfeiting rings. Judging from your description of the packages you sold and the cost of producing such packages, I assume they come from such a source.

I'm from Seattle, so I didn't really think twice when the seller told me their source was a person who worked at Microsoft and had access to the "Microsoft store" (which is somewhat infamous here because of how cheap you can get software for if you have access).

Stuck on grey Apple screen, how can I erase and restore back to original?

I've been trying to restore my imac G4 flat panel back to its factory settings, as I have recently backed up my necessary files on an external hard drive. It came with Panther and I upgraded to Tiger, but now I don't have any of the disks. I don't care if it restores back to Panther, I just want to erase and restore it. I tried to download and mount the restore disc and do it from there, but now its stuck on the grey apple screen. Any help would be appreciated.

You just need to tell iTunes where the library is located. If you want it back on your internal drive, copy the entite iTunes folder. Follow the instructions below.

If you installed Lion from the Mac App Store or got it with the computer, restart with the Option key held down and see if its recovery partition still exists; if it does, tab to it, use the Disk Utility on it to erase the Mountain Lion partition or repartition the drive, and install Lion onto the blank partition. If you installed Lion from the USB thumb drive, use that.

If I erase and install Lion, will my exisiting Time Machine Back-up be overwritten?

Since upgrading to Lion, I have experienced problems with permissions and having to repair the disk.
I have decided to do an erase and install of Lion, but would like to clarify a few things about the time machine back up.
Firstly, once the operating system has been re-installed (I do not intend to restore from backup), will my current time machine back up continue to operate or will a new back up need to take its place?
Secondly, rather than restoring from the back up (as I have alot of redundant apps), am I able to select certain apps/app data to restore? (If the answer to the above is 'Yes' then i assume that this could be done by entering time machine once I am up and running).

First, it's unlikely that reinstalling Lion will solve your problems. But that's not the question.
If you do erase and restore, you won't lose your TM backups, but TM will need to back up all your files, even if they were previously backed up. That may result in the deletion of many snapshots to free up space.

Problem is that my wifi does not work.. im using usb dongle.. My screen was broken and i replace it with 2010 model which suppose to be compatibile with my 2011. Is there a way I can access utility disc and not going itno internet recovery mode?

Lion does not work well with several of my applications the most important of which is my client data file and billing program which keeps crashing with Lion. I want to remove it and go back to SL but don't want to lose any data that I have put in my files. Using time machine backups I am afraid will lose much of what I have done since I "upgraded" (I should say downgraded my system) with Lion. I don't like the changes in ical (it ***** big time) and address book is just as bad, not even functioning right. Then there is no manual for figuring things out. I know Steve Jobs has been sick but that is a lousy excuse for a lousy upgrade that really had more problems then additional helpful features.

This is what we did in our office, from Kappy:
To switch from Lion to Snow Leopard:
1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.4.1.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups, do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions. If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion files.

You will need to reformat the hard drive to go back to Snow Leopard or Leopard.
Does he have a Snow Leopard Disk? He should, as there is no way to go from Leopard to Mountain Lion without it. If you can find the Snow Leopard Disk, I'd at least start with that.
You will need to use Disk Utility in the installer to format the hard drive and get rid of the recovery partition.
Boot from the installer disk by holding down the C key on restart. When it boots, Open Disk Utility (Utilities menu, at least in Snow Leopard).
Select the Hard drive and then click the Partition tab.
Select 1 Partition from the partition menu.
Select Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the format.
Name the drive (Macintosh HD is the standard).
Click Apply to partition the drive.
When it is done, quit Disk Utility and install the OS.

So how do I get the Mini back just as it was before but with a reinstalled system

so it is likely that THAT external HD will not be a start up disk....
so what is necessary for the external HD to be a startup drive for the intel Mini
I do NOT use Time Machine... Rather I've chosen to use Carbon Copy Cloner to do my complete backups.
But that would be from the OLD 10.6.8 and after installing it again, I would want all EXCEPT system stuff
back on the Mini.
Right now the Mini is working fine, purchased used, but purchased Leopard Install DVD from Apple - just in case it's needed

Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive

Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed with reinstalling OS X. Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files. After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

Too many issues with too much time for system to come up, time capsule, Adobe CS does not work, Bento files dont work, just want to go back to Snow Leopard...what are the steps?

You'll want to backup first (obviously)!!!!!!!!
But
1) boot from a Snow Leopard Disk (or your computer's original system disks if your machine came with 10.6) by EITHER holding down the OPTION key or the C key when rebooting (the compute rgoes 'bong' and then press the key immediately)
2) Choose your language
3) When you choose the disk on which to install Snow Leopard, it should yell at you (which is good).
(I don't have the images in front of my, so I apologize if the instructions aren't exact)
4) Chose ARCHIVE & INSTALL if you can.
*Archive & install, is a wonderful feature removed after Snow Leopard where you can reinstall the OS w/o overwriting the old, or reformatting the drive.
5) DO the standard install, or click 'advanced' and unselect that which you don't need (like Chinese for example, or printer drivers for brands you don't have).
6) Once the install is done, you'll want to immediately run the MAc Updater and get up to 10.6.8, the current rev of Snow Leopard.
However, should the disk not allow you to 'archive and install'; you'll need to either choose 'erase and install'; or if THAT isn't an option;
go into the menus, and to DISK UTILITY
Choose your hard drive, and erase it.
Quit Disk Utility, and repeat the above steps to install a clean version of Snow Leopard.
But please, BACK UP FIRST.
Use Super-duper or Carbon Copy Cloner (both free, both good) to clone your drive as it is presently; I am not sure if a 10.7 Time MAchine will be readible from a 10.6 migration assistant.
And next time, read before you update your OS; we've known for MONTHS that CS, CS2 won't work as they are PPC applications. CS3+ work just fine for the most part- there are some subroutines in Photoshop that evidently are still PPC applications.
I don't allow my users to upgrade to a new OS until the x.x.2 release; and in the case of Lion- I have been going over their system apps to make sure they don't use PPC apps anymore.

Preparing for Leopard I had a good clean out and got to 21gb of free space on my 40gb HD.
Backed up files to Firewire AND USB external drives.
I tried an upgrade installation of Leopard.
Got the blue screen, tried the APE fixes.
Couldn't do an archive and install as the message said there wasn't enough space.
9gb plus 9gb = 21gb+ I guess....!
(Even tried a Terminal removal of some iTunes files, which I knew I had a back up of, but no luck increasing available space.)
So, did and erase and install which worked fine.
But now I am having trouble importing settings from the old files.
Mail for example wants me to start from scratch, and won't see the back ups I made.
I realize each application has library files, plists and other files associations - how to I get the virgin Leopard versions to recognize their older cousins?
Migration Assistant doesn't seem to see external drives except for Time Machine which of course has nothing I want...
How also to import 3rd party apps. with their previous associations and settings?
Hope I don't have to start from scratch...

You can't just replace the user folder with the one from before the 10.5 install. What you have to do is individually drag the items from each folder ie "Music" to their corresponding folders in the new home folder.
Put the Backup "Documents" files to New "Document" folder
Mail is located in username/Library/Mail and possibly also username/Library/Mail Downloads, drag both these to the new walts "Library".
Bookmarks is located in username/Library/Safari/Bookmarks.plst, once you find this go to the File Menu in Safari and go to "Import Bookmarks."
I would not recommend copying any settings from the backup to 10.5, this causes errors sometimes. These settings are also easily redone. If you must have them spotlight them or search for them in the preferences or Library/Application Support. Applications Mail settings can also be easily reconfigured for example.

Lion erase and reinstall by the Apple Store

Ok, I'll admit I'm a recent PC crossover so that qualifies me as a Newbie. Today I took my MacBook to the apple store for an erase and reinstall due to about 20gb of space was missing on my HD. My latest backup was done the day before I went back to Apple to reinstall Lion. After I restored my data from the backup, the address book app and the app store app are both missing. My address book data is on iCloud so I'm not that concerned about the data but I would like to get the app back on my MacBook. Any help on how to do this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks....

I'm not aware of any easy way to reinstall an OS X application in Lion short of reinstalling Lion. You can do that without erasing the drive again, but there is the time it takes to reinstall.
I don't suppose you have a copy of the Lion installer saved on your computer or purchased the Apple USB Lion flash drive installer?
Reinstalling Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.
