Erasing Backgrounds??

I am trying to cut and paste a selection from one image onto another. Is there a better (more accurate) way of erasing the background of the selection I just copied. I tried the background eraser tool but find the brush pattern leaves semi-cicular edges as I am erasing the background. Is there a better tool that gives a little more control or a better technique or settings for using the background eraser? Thanks

Once you have used the Lasso tool to make your initial selection, here is one way to fine-tune it, getting down to the details along the edges:
Use the Selection Brush tool with Mode set to Mask. Invert the selection and you will see that the selection is masked in red. Lower the Overlay Opacity enough to see the object, select a small brush size, and paint away... painting adds to the mask, holding down Alt as you paint erases the mask. Zoom in far to work on details and use a small brush size. When you are done set Mode back to Selection and invert the selection.

  • How do I erase background from gif graphic in Photoshop 7  for use on website?

I am using Photoshop 7 and am trying to convert a jpg photo from my camera to a gif that I can use on  my website.  I erased a background on a photo with checkerboard pattern) one time (that's what I am trying to find again) and I can't find that eraser anymore.
Would appreciate any help.  I am using windows 2000 pro.

The eraser is in the Toolbox on the left but it is pretty crude for this purpose. Better to use a selection tool to isolate the area to be removed, followed by the Delete key. There are other ways but it gets more complicated.
Work on a copy to preserve the original.

  • Adding color to erased background

    Hello,
I used the Background Eraser tool to remove the background, and I would like to replace the newly transparent background with a color or gradient. I cannot seem to isolate the background with the foreground of the photo. I'm a newbie using Photoshop CS5.
    Thanks in advance!

double click on the background layer to make it into a normal layer
    add a new layer (layer>new>layer)
fill it with the colour you want(edit>fill (with colour)
Move Colour layer to below your layer 0 *(ctrl-[ )

  • Can't seem to erase background

This has got to be SO easy but even following the Help instructions isn't working.  I have a photo of a tractor trailer on a totally white background.  I want to make the white background transparent so just the truck shows when I place it in InDesign over a background color.  I've tried background eraser and magic eraser and they replace the white with checkerboard.  Then I save it as a JPEG, but when I place it the white box is still around the truck.  What am I doing wrong?

Try save for web and choose PNG24
      Alternatively add an extra layer
Layer à New Fill Layer à Solid Color
Drag it down the layer stack below the tractor then flatten image and save.

  • Can I erase background of vid and only keep 1 moving subject?

I am working with a football video and need to erase the background as runner is running and just keep the runner. Is that possible with FCP? I have tried garbage mattes and chroma key. I guess I don't know what I am doing but if it is possible, please let me know how to do it. Thanks.

Wow, sounds like you've got a lot more tolerance for tedium than I do.
Roto is already so laborious and monotonous, it's barely tolerable, for me. The functionality of this particular matte seems like an ice pick to the forhead. At least in Motion you can click-drag a mask point, or bezier handle at will—and manipulate it, quickly and easily. With this 50 pt. matte, don't you have to go to the "control window", click the little cross hair, then place/edit that point in the canvas? That's fine until you want to adjust it, then you have to go back over to the control panel to re-gain control. You're constantly bouncing between control panel & canvas it seems... Ouch!
Maybe I'm missing something about how this matte works. But if I had to work like that, I'd pull my hair out. I'm not knocking your workflow if you've used this before. I'm applauding your efforts to see it through. Congratulations! You're a far more patient individual than am I!
Though, to the OP, if the Final Cut Suite is all that's available, I'd certainly look at doing this job in Motion.
Yes, AE is going to faster at this, if we're talking about the Rotobrush tool that shipped with CS5. It's not a one-click-wonder. But it certainly does a great "first pass" that you can clean up and refine, after it's done the initial dirty work. But if you don't have AE CS5, it's kind of moot. I think the AE process and the Motion process are going to be nearly the same, regarding time-spent. Either packages' "standard" mask manipulation tools are very similar. (If we're disregarding the Rotobrush.)
Here's a tip, regarding Roto (in any application): it's not always best to use a single mask/matte. Instead, combine several mattes into one. In this instance, maybe 5 individual masks? One for: torso/head, arm, arm, leg, leg. Gives you more flexibility in the long run. And it's no more time consuming than using a single mask.

  • BPC Input Schedule: DELETE button erase background color

    Hi,
Can anyone help on the following problem:
I have an input schedule (either with nested rows or simple) and BPC by default marks all changed cells with red color. But when [DEL] button key is pressed in a cell all other marked cells on the same row loses their red color and became white again. It's undesirable behavior.
I've searched the forum and internet but nowhere this topic arise, maybe i'm doing something wrong. The one idea is to write a VBA macros which automatically recognize modified cells and then restores their previous backgrounds. Is there another solution?
    Thank you!
    Ivan

    Hi,
When you create a report/input schedule using standard formating option system will generate with [multiple format|http://help.sap.com/saphelp_bpc75_nw/helpdata/en/87/2e5940a305405f957eb987daf30d5b/content.htm] .When you change the value it will turn to Red beacuse it defined under format range with criteria CHANGED and format with Red color. But system will not recognise DELETE as change. That is why if you want to delete a specific value you should make that value as 0 then only system will consider that as change other wise system would prompt you a message "There is no data to refresh".
I think you have to write your own macro if you really want to use DELETE function, instead of zerorise the values.
    hope it helps...
    regards,
    Raju

  • Erasing Background (Almost)

This design issue is driving me nuts.
I'm creating a flyer that incorporates "floating" product images.
I removed the background of the original images, using Photoshop. Two files were rendered from tiff, and two files were rendered from smaller rez jpgs. All four floating images were saved as psd files.
I created the flying in Adobe Illustrator, and placed the psd files onto the AI artwork, and the monitor depicts elements as they should be depicted.
Problem is when I print the document in color two of the "floating" images are enclosed by boxes.
    http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z159/threegunfish/20101005Scan.jpg
Can anyone explain how I might fix this issue? I feel like it stems from the nature of the original image files (tiff vs jpeg), but unfortunately I don't have hi rez tiffs of the "error" images.
    Thank you!

As a workaround, in your layered document you could select the solid-colored areas around the gloves (e.g., with the magic wand tool) then delete those pixels.

  • Erase tool in PS touch

How come the app is seriously slowing down now, and crashing when I use the Erase Tool on the iPad 3 version?

    Hi there,
Thanks so much for getting back to me so quickly. I have restarted the device..multiple times, In fact, every time I used the erase tool I had to reboot the iPad.
Ok, it's happened on several projects I will try and describe the sequence of events ...It always happens after using the lasso tool, and the inverse to erase background from an image...the whole process immediately slows to a crawl...I can see each independent round erase brush circle on the page...then...the progress square bar appears and it stalls...no button works, including the home button to release the crash...a hard boot (restart) is the only thing that works.
I had wondered if it was a free memory kind of thing, so...I deleted piles of data from my tablet, and have 4GB free, nope...no luck...I wonder if I should reinstall the whole program?
Hopefully I have recreated this as best as I could...
Specs: iPad 3 running, iOs 6.0.1, PS version 1.4.0
    Cheers,

  • Where is the Eraser Tool

Where is the Eraser Tool in Elements 11? I have been using an older version that has an eraser. I can't seem to find it in Elements 11. The Scratches and Blemishes tools seem to be very difficult to use and confusing.

Press E on the keyboard to see all three choices in the bottom tool options. You should see eraser, background eraser and magic extractor tools.

  • Cleaning up background

I have been frustrated when trying to remove the "backgrounds" from a couple of old portraits.  It's probably because I can't figure out the Lasso tool and other ways of performing this task the "easy" way.  Also, the outline of the people is out of focus, making it harder for Photshop to figure out the desired borders.  So what I did what choose the "Erase Background" eraser and manually spent an hour erasing everything around the people.  This sucked, because the eraser function doesn't seem to erase 100% of what I move over -- so I have to "scrub" the photo to remove all of the pixels.  And worse yet, even after I've done that, using different brush sizes, the background still looks "dirty."  (See the pic below).  Any ideas about how to eliminate this, preferably quickly?  I should confess that I don't even understand the "layers" in Photoshop, so I might be a difficult student!  :-(  Thanks in advance for any help!!!

Masking is very simple. Check this quick tutorial out which should help: Quick Mask Mode | Understanding Adobe Photoshop CS6 | Adobe TV

  • Help! When in "graphic watermark" setting, how do I remove white box around my watermark? Already saved in PNG

I'm trying to upload a saved graphic watermark to my photos in Lightroom 4 but no matter what I do, I can't get the white box around the watermark to go away. I've already tried saving the watermark file in PNG like other sites suggested but it does no good. Other sites tell me I need to save the watermark in another version of adobe and check the box "transparent" but Lightroom is the only version of adobe I have. Any help ASAP would be greatly appreciated!!!

I have also been trying to solve the same problem.  Where does one take an already created watermark and make it transparent?  I have Photoshop on my old Mac and e-mailed my solid white background watermark to myself, opened it in Photoshop and "erased" the white background.  Transfered it back to my Lightroom on my MacBookPro and exported the test photo w/ the "erased" background watermark.  I had no idea if it would work….it did not.  OR : How does one create a transparent watermark?  I have a graphic I want to use w/ my name.   Please HELP!!!

  • Please help!! photo in wineglass in Photoshop elements 9

I am new to photoshop (or any other editing for that matter). I would love to make a picture effect of a photo in a wine glass and am about to pull my hair out trying to figure this out. I have found some instructions on the internet but am having a hard time following them. I have Photoshop elements 9. I have a picture of a beach scene that I took in Cancun. I uploaded a picture of a wine glass and cut out the wineglass using the quick selection tool and selection tool brush. That part looks pretty good. I can't figure out how to get the picture in the glass. I used the elliptical selection tool and made an oval around the picture. I tried to erase the background of the oval but couldn't figure that out. So I tried to drag the oval to the wineglass and the entire picture moved and covered the glass and the entire beach scene. I tried to do decrease opacity and erase background but that has turned into a sloppy mess. I really want to do this for a friend as a wedding gift but can't seem to figure out how and I am running out of time. Can someone please help me figure out how to do this. Maybe I am doing things in the wrong order. I don't know...but I am sure someone out there can help me. And I sure would appreciate any help I can get.

I would have got back to you earlier but one of my kids wanted on the computer. There's no school tomorrow as it's been canceled because of the blizzard here in the Midwest so I let them stay up late tonight.
You need to soften the edges of the selection. The secret to moving items onto a new background is to add a touch of feather to the selection. The quick select is an awesome tool to get a good selection but it makes hard edges so you often need to take it a step farther and add some feather. You can do that a couple of ways either with the new refine edge dialog or the select<modify<feather command. Since you have PSE 9, I would recommend using the refine edge command. I believe, in Elements that will be in the Select menu. If it isn't listed under that heading, check under the other menu headings in the menu bar.
Above using your items from your post with a slightly feathered edge selection.
Above using your items saved from your post...slightly firmer edge selection and a slight blur added to top portion of background to give it a little depth of field. I used the levels command to firm it up. I'll get into that under the firmer mask image below.
I always use masks so I can show you my actual selection using a screen grab. I started by selecting your wine glass with the quick select tool. I used the brush tool to soften the glass selection on the sides. I intentionally varied the softness for this glass because it seemed to sell the effect more.
I changed my mind and decided on firmer edges for the side of the glass. I firmed them by using the levels command on the mask. Shortcut is Ctrl + L. I used the middle gray slider in the levels command to firm up the glass selections edge.
(I posted both so you could see how the difference in a selection mask can change the blended outcome. IMO, the second mask makes the glass more realistic as the first has the glass edges just a tad too soft. You'll also notice the second image includes a copy of the background layer. I blurred the background then masked bottom portion of the blurred background to create a depth of field effect. You can pull a black to transparent gradient using the gradient tool on a mask to fade the sharp and blurred background version together.
My Couple mask is a bit sloppy but you get the idea.
Couple layer visible. I went off of everything put together not necessarily what the individual layer looked. On a larger high resolution image, I would have probably made them more opaque and also cleaned up their mask better. It's tricky working with small images.
Glass mask...screen blend mode 25% opacity. I won't post a screen grab of that layer as there isn't much to show.
Above is alternate version with couple opaque and the couple mask cleaner. I'm not sure which version I prefer...
Edit: I think I prefer this alternate couple more opaque version.
Above is alternate version with couple on their own layer.
Above is alternate version couple mask.

  • Urxvt, xterm, vim, and gnu screen.

To make this simple: all i want is 256 color support in one terminal, that will give 256 color support in vim, gnu screen, and not screw up shells i ssh into.    If I could get this working in xterm alone consider this solved.
The more I try to fix my problem it seems the more complicated it gets.  What I want, I thought was simple:
Now xterm seems to be the most workable solution, I guess I can give up on having clickable links, so that can go on the back burner.  But these are the problems i'm having.
Here's the problem point by point:
    Urxvt
    $ echo $TERM
    xterm-256color
Urxvt will run a perl script I have to display 256 colors.  Except is does not show the grayscale ramp shown here:
VIM in urxvt does NOT show any colors.  It's all white text.
    This is my .vimrc
    $ cat .vimrc
    syntax on
    set ignorecase
    set smartcase
    set incsearch
    set hlsearch
    let g:netrw_http_cmd = "wget -q -O"
    if &t_Co == 256
    colorscheme xoria256
    else
    colorscheme desert
    endif
    in urxvt Gnu Screen
    echo $TERM
    screen-256color-bce
the perl script does not display 256 colors like it should.
vim in urxvt in screen again, does not show any colors. all white text.
    Xterm
    echo $TERM
    xterm
Xterm displays the full 256 colors from the script including the grayscale ramp.
vim in xterm displays the desert theme (i would prefer it default to the xoria256, no idea why the 256 color script works but vim doesn't see xterm as a 256 capable terminal).
    in xterm, Gnu Screen
    echo $TERM
screen-256color-bce   ( I do not see in any file where this option is defined)
Xterm with Gnu Screen displays the full 256 colors from the script including the grayscale ramp.
Vim in Gnu Screen in Xterm displays 256 colors properly.
    Here is my .screenrc

    To Fix In Xterm
-Get Vim to display 256 colors without Gnu Screen
    To Fix In Urxvt
-Get vim to display any color, but preferably 256 colors in urxvt and urxvt with Gnu Screen.  (and yes, it's a 256 capable urxvt)
-Get shells i SSH into to recognize the reported term variable
    To Fix In Gnu Screen
-Make it stop reporting the term variable as screen-256color-bce without losing 256 color support as this screws up shells i ssh to.
any help would be greatly appreciated.  I feel like a dog chasing its tail b/c when I find a fix to one problem, I end up creating 1-2 more.

I had similar but different issues regarding this.  Now, i have 256 color support in whatever terminal/ssh/screen session I'm in.
    The relevant config lines:
    .Xdefaults:
    XTerm*termName: xterm-256color
    URxvt*termName: rxvt-256color
    .vimrc
" 256 colors only if you can handle it
    if $TERM =~ "-256color"
    set t_Co=256
    colorscheme zenburn
    endif
    .screenrc
    # term
    term xterm-256color
    # main options
    altscreen on
    attrcolor b ".I"
    defbce "on"
    # some termcaps
    termcapinfo xterm-256color 'Co#256:AB=\E[48;5;%dm:AF=\E[38;5;%dm'
    termcapinfo rxvt-256color 'Co#256:AB=\E[48;5;%dm:AF=\E[38;5;%dm'
note: this setup caused an issue where background colors in mutt/htop inside screen did not extend passed the line's text.  i had to solve that via this workaround.

Hi, I had the same problem with mine. I've managed to partially fix it by using a workspace extension.
This is the documentation for it:
Remove the InDesign preferences folder. This ensures that changes made to the workspace extensions appear when InDesign is launched.
Launch InDesign with your plug-ins loaded, so your panels are available in the user interface.
Organize the panels as you want your user to see them for the first time.
    Exit InDesign normally.
Locate the “Essentials_CurrentWorkspace.xml” file in the InDesign preferences folder. Duplicate the file and rename the duplicate to the name that you want to use for this workspace extension.
Distribute/Copy the workspace-extension XML file in the InDesign Workspace Extension folder (<app folder>/Presets/InDesign Workspaces/en_US/Workspace Extensions). If the “Workspace Extensions” folder does not exist, create it. The easiest way to distribute the workspace-extension XML file might be in the same installer used to install your plug-ins.
I followed that, and my panels appeared in their own group, as I had laid them out.
However, if I didn't delete my user preferences, the ordering and position was different to how I'd laid them out.
Launch InDesign - move standard panels to make a custom user layout - install plugin - relaunch InDesign - launch plugin panels:
The panels seemed to appear in a random position and order, but in their own tab group - no longer bundled with Artices etc
Then delete user prefs - relaunch InDesign - launch plugin panels:
My custom panel layout appears exactly correct over the default workspace layout.
Obviously, you don't want the user to have to delete their preferences and lose their custom layout, so it's not perfect, but at least it got rid of Articles etc. If your plugin is a single panel, it might just do what you need.
    I expect there's a way to solve the random position/order too - I just haven't found it!
