Erasing info on Mac Mini

HI all
I am going to purchase the new macbook pro. However on my current mac mini which has snow leopard. I have now sold this. I am wanting to make sure all items that I have installed on this mac mini is deleted, including my files. How do I do this?
All I want the new user to see is the welcome screen when you first use your mac mini where you can enter your apple id etc etc. What is best way to do this? Thanks in advance.
p.s I have time machine external HD and looking at transferring all my things which are on my mac mini to my MBP, I was thinking of getting the guys at Apple to do this? Is it better this way? Whats the best way to do this?
Thanks in advance

To erase your hard drive, insert the first OS X disk that came with your mini, and boot holding the D key down. This will cause it to boot from the DVD. From menu bar, find Disk Utility, then
Select the internal hard drive to erase, and then click Erase.
Specify a volume format (mac os extended journaled), and enter a name for the disk.
Click Security Options and choose to write over the data once, 7 times, or 35 times. Click OK.
Click Erase.
The more times it overwrites data, the more secure it is, and the longer it takes. I would recommend at least 7 times.
Then give your mini and the original OS X disks, along with any other software you sold with the system, to the new owner. They can then install the operating system and programs and start their mac experience. Or you can install the operating system for them.

  • Alum Mac Mini SLOW after restore from Time Machine backup of 09 Mac Mini

    Hi,
I bought a 2010 Alum Mac Mini (2.4Ghz/2GB/320GB/OS10.6.4) a couple months ago, and I restored it from a time machine backup from my old '08 Mac Mini (1.83ghz/2GB/OS10.6.4). All data moved successfully, but this machine seems 2x slower than my old Mac Mini.
    Issues I'm encountering include:
    iDisk sync extremely slow
    launching Apps slow
Trouble handling more than 3 or 4 open apps (Chrome, iTunes, Pages, Numbers)
Is it possible that this is an issue because of restoring from the backup?
    Thanks in advance!
PS - I'm a fairly intermediate-advanced user, no programming background, but solid on most other things.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
If you still have the TM backup, I would suggest erasing the new Mac mini's HDD and doing a fresh install from its Install DVD and then do a migration of the TM backup rather than a clone. There is something in that clone that the new mini does not like.
You could also, as an alternative, try installing Mac OS X from the Install DVD over the top of the clone and see if it fills in the gap or corrects whatever the new mini does not like. This should not touch your data, just install Mac OS X Snow Leopard over the version already there. But you should always make a backup of anything that is not backed up.

  • Do i need to do "something" for my mac mini to see my sata drive?

    Hi guys
Problem: After replacing a failing HDD, I have connected a sata cable from inside my mini to an external sata drive and my mini does not recognise my new drive as an internal drive or in disk utility.
Modification: I have removed my failing internal 320 gb HDD and am presently booting up via an external USB drive.  I have modified a sata to esata cable so that it fits the internal sata connection of the mini. ( i have carefully cut excess plastic off the sides of one end, so that it fits into the connection. )  I have a 1.5tb sata drive inside an external sata/firewire/usb enclosure.  The drive has been mac formatted on another machine, with 3 partitions (boot, back up & media)
Tests: In disk utility, i can not view my sata connected drive. However, when i connect the drive via firewire or usb, the drive is recognised and all 3 partitions show up. Disk Utlity shows that this connection is made via USB/Firewire.
System Info: 2008 Mac Mini 2ghz with 2gig Ram.  Did have a 320gb internal Drive, but it crashed.  Replacing it with a western digital 1.5tb sata hard drive. The enclosure is a standard non branded silver enclosure.  There is no physical switch on the enclosure that controls the connection type. The cable is a regular sata to esata cable.
Do i need to do anything for my mini to recognise this new drive?
    Thanks for reading

After re-watching the Youtube clip that i followed, i think i have modified the wrong cable.
The cable that i modified is this sata to esata cable
The cable on the YouTube clip looks like the metal connectors are like a series of long rectangles. As does the connector on the broken hard drive that i have.  The cable i am using, the metal connector points are a series of small dots/balls at the ends.
The Youtube clip makes his own sata enclosure, where as i am using an enclosure that already has the connections.
Can anybody advise what connectors then, i should use, if i am using the wrong one.
    Thanks alot

  • Error Message and no Sound on Mac Mini

    Hi all
As recommended by several people here I upgraded the RAM on my step-dad's Mac Mini. Everything looked okay, other no Internet, due to a disconnected Airport Antenna that I reconnected. After doing that he now is having two problems with this computer.
    1. error message "Sorry there is not enough memory for Solitaire to run"
    2. No sound - checked System Preferences and most options are grayed out - In addition when looking at hardware overview I get this message 'there is not built in audio."
I was told to reset the PRAM, but I am not sure if I am doing this right, as I can not hear this computer starting up (can't hear the dings).
    Here is the system info.
    Mac Mini 2.1
1.83 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    2GB Ram
    Mac OSX 10.5.8
Please if you can be of help.
    Thanks

I am just finally posting a reply. Looks as though the sound card went out. I was told that I could purchase a new open and install myself. I did not do that, but rather my step-dad just decided it was time to buy a new Mac Mini.

  • Wifi on my mac mini?

    Hello
I have the option to enable/disable wifi on my mac mini, it is currently turned on. What I want to know is whether it matters if it is turned on or off?
Further info, the mac mini is connected by ethernet to my modem/router.
In the house we have a couple of iphones, an Ipad and an Apple TV2.
I want to access my music collection on my mac mini from the other devices, which I am able to do, and I have mirrored video content suc as Iplayer from my mac mini to my TV via the Apple TV. All of this is great and after years of using PC's I am very impressed by the way I have been able to get this all up and running with ease and how all of the devices communicate with each other.
Is it important whether the wifi on the mac mini is on or off? Will turning wifi off have any impact on streaming, or does it all go via the router.
    Any info would be appreciated.

If you want to stream to your AppleTV or if you want to use anything that requires location services, WiFi has to be turned on. Like tbirdvet, I have both wired and WiFi active. When you open the Network Tab of System Preferences you'll see a green dot next to both Ethernet and Wifi if you do this. The one that's at the top of the list has precedence so if Ethernet isn't on top, click on the gear and select Set Service Order to put Ethernet on top.

  • How do I remove my personal info from my Mac Mini (selling)...

... I contacted AppleCare who advised me to erase the HDD (by starting-up holding Command-R), which I did.
The Mini then went to the internet to download a fresh copy of the OS - trouble is I'm on a REALLY slow connection (512kbps) and it estimated 70+ hours and it's apparently 3.5GB +, which is also way out of my allowance.
I contacted AppleCare again who pointed me to my local Apple Store, who couldn't get rid of me fast enough.  They ended up giving me a USB drive with a Copy of OS/X Lion, which when I got home found out didn't work....  it turns out that the current Mac Minis won't allow an install this way. I called the store, and received no response.
Is there any way I can 'clean out' my personal details without going through a full re-install???
    Thanks!

    @ bootloader:
    Worked! - nice one!
I had already manually deleted all my old data (and done an Erase Free Space), so this has done the trick - it's nice, easy ideas like this that sometimes work the best!  When deleting the User Account, there's an option for Safe Erasure which I guess writes zeroes.

  • How do I erase and install a new copy of Mt Lion on a Mac Mini that has Mt Lion installed by previous owner?

Wish I could have phrased the question better, but here's what I need to know: I traded an older iPad for a Mac Mini. I made the trade with my daughter who, after transferring everything to her iMac, handed me over the Mac Mini with all her files, and OS X Mt Lion still installed. So now I'm ready to erase the Mac Mini's HD and install my own new copy of Mt Lion onto it. Back in the "old days" of physical media I would have no problem with this, but now that I have to download and install Mt Lion from the Mac App store, I'm wondering how to do this (easily?).

If you have already purchased Mountain Lion form teh Mac App Store, then you can boot the Mac Mini to its recovery partition and select to re-partition the disk and re-install from teh internet.  It will check to see if the Mac Mini is qualified for Mountain Lion (default for a new Mac Mini), and if it isn't, then it will ask you for the Mac App Store ID that was used to purchase Mountain Lion.  You enter your ID here, and it will verify that you have purchased it, and all will be well.  If you haven't purchased it yet, the easiest thing to do is to borrow your daughter's iMac, and sign into the Mac App Store with your ID and purchse Mountain Lion, then use the above steps.

  • Mac Mini Newbie seeks LCD Display Info

    Hi
Am about to purchase a Mac Mini. Wondering if I can utilise an LCD TV as my display rather than pay out for an Apple Display?
What Max Resolution will I achieve? Will it be comparable to an Apple Display?
Any other advice from people whom have done same?
    Thanks! All info appreciated.

Both items #1 and #2 can be corrected using the Gefen DVI Detective.

  • Mac Mini as Info Center....

    Good morning.
I have a 1st gen Mac Mini. I'm interested in setting it up in our kitchen as a "info center". What I'd like to do is use it stream select music to play, videos to watch, TV (using Elgato?) and have weather updates available, etc. I do have Front Row on the mini. Couple of questions:
    1. Is there any other "Media" type software available (tried Media Central... too slow on gen 1 mini)?
    2. Is there a remote available for the mini that will allow control of functionality (don't think the 1st gen has IR capability, does it?). Rather have that then keyboard and mouse on kitchen counter.
I have many ideas and can see this working, just wanted to be able to get the most "bang for the buck".
    Thanks.

I have a G4 mini (the first generation) in use as a 'media center', using Front Row, and it works very well. TV is handled by an Elgato EyeTV device, and it streams music and video, including my movie library, from the iTunes library on my G5 - that content can be accessed either via iTunes sharing or Front Row (Front Row is more elegant as a control interface).
Since the first generation mini does not have an IR interface for remote control, I have a Keyspan remote (http://www.amazon.com/Remote-Front-Row-Mac-Only/dp/B000FBK3RE/ref=sr11?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1226494866&sr=8-1) which works very well, though range is not as great as typically suggested. The remote uses a USB 'dongle', so it takes up one of the two USB ports on the back of the G4 mini.
Overall performance is more than adequate for my needs, including internet access for browsing and even direct access to online content.
