Erasing internal P'book HD and restoring SOME data from external TM HD?

I would like to erase the internal 60 GB HD in my PowerBook G4 that is about 99% full.
I did a TM backup yesterday (to a 250 GB firewire external) and would like to clear off the internal HD and bring back SOME of the data but not so much that there isn't room to work.
Someone here on the forum advised against erasing all the original data on the internal HD because then your backups are no longer backups.
Short of putting a larger HD into the P'Book (which is probably 5 - 6 years old) what strategy would you recommend? I have a new 1TB USB 2.0 external that could get into the act here . . . anyone want to provide a direction for me?
Thanks very much.

1. First do your reinstallation and the restore of files you wish to keep on the internal drive. Once that is done turn off TM and set the backup drive to None. Change the Computer Name, turn TM back on and select the backup drive. When TM does the backup it should do so to a new folder under the new Computer Name. You Backups.backupd folder on the backup drive will then contain two main folders under each separate Computer Name.
2. To transfer the existing TM backup to your new drive you must first partition the new drive using the APM partition scheme if the drive is used on a PPC or GUID if used on an Intel machine. Format the drive using Mac OS Extended, Journaled. Clone the old backup drive to the new one using the Restore option in Disk Utility per the following:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the new backup drive.
Source means the old backup drive.
3. Yes, but when you use the TM application you will need to invoke the option to restore from a different TM backup drive or TM backup.

    Just got brand new macbook pro (13inch) and restored all data from old mac via time machine. Now when I p/back a track in logic I get audio drop out for 3-4 secs every 10 - 15 secs!! What is going on and what can I do? Its the same version of logic and all other functions seem fine!

    First of all, why did you say yes to Nero Back up before researching what it does with files already on the HDD? When I install Nero, the Back Up is the first thing I disable, it is a nagging pain, there are much better backup programs available. There are several file recovery programs out there to recover deleted files, that is, if that is what happened. Also, if you haven't overwritten the files, so you should be able to find them.

    Hi,disc wiped ,OSX10.9 back on ,how do I restore my data from external hard drive ?Any help welcome .

    There's Setup Assistant and Migration Assistant. The cleanest way to do it is Setup Assistant, but you only get that option once when you fire up a fresh install of OSX. If you're past that, you could reinstall OSX by booting with Command-R, or you could use Migration Assistant.

  • Backup and restoring itunes library from external hard drive?

    is there a way to backup and restore my itunes library to external hard drive and not through the internal itunes backup utility cos i have over 20gbs of music and i want to keep my album art and renamed songs etc. because i will be reformating my pc and dont want to go through painful task of manually adding stuff again.

    Try this...
    *Fast backup for iTunes library (Windows Only)*
    Grab SyncToy 2.0, a free tool from MS. Use it to create a backup copy of your iTunes library & any other media folders onto another hard drive or network share. After making the initial backup copy use SyncToy to periodically synchronise the backup copy with your library and only the changed files will be copied saving lots of time.
    When the time comes to reformat your PC, do a final sync, then open iTunes & deauthorise the PC, reformat & rebuild Windows, copy the backup folders back to the same location as they were previously, install iTunes and it should all work perfectly.

  • I lost my iPad. I had not secured it with a password at the time.  I bought a new one and was able to restore some data from the old one.  Is there a way if can locate my old iPad?

    i indeed to recover my old iPad 3 which was stolen. How do I go about this?

    If you did not turn on Find My iPad you will not be able to track it,locate it or erase it remotely. whoever has your iPad may have erased it but they might also be using it as they found t schedule means your passwords and sensitive info might be exposed. I suggest changing your Apple ID password and every other password used on your old iPad.

  • How to open a popup and get some data from a model class

    Hi experts,
    mi problem is the next.
    I am opening a popup from a view that is  controlled by a controller named identificador.do, the controller class is z_identity_cl.
    the window that is opened is other view controlled by nocupentes.do, with a controller class, z_nocupantes_cl.
    In the do_init event of the z_nocupantes class i have added the next code:
    <i>  DATA: cl_parent TYPE REF TO Z_IDENTtity_CL.
    Recuperamos el atributo parent
      cl_parent ?= me->m_parent.
    model is the class i want to recover, it is defined in the attibutes of the class z_identity_cl
      model     ?= cl_parent->get_model( 'mo' ).</i>
    When i open the popup i get the next error:
    <i>BSP exception : the object  numero_ocup.htm(this is the page i want to open) in URL sap/ZHR_PDWEB_GDPT/numero_ocup.htm is a view. Initialize the controller.</i>
    what do i have to do?
    any help?
    thanks in advance

    Hi Eduardo,
      you should be calling the Controller in the URL not the View. after calling the controlles in the URL create the view in the DO_REQUEST of the Controller. This should resolve the issue.
      In the the DO_INIT define the Parent class of the Controller.
    METHOD do_init.
      DATA: lr_my_parent TYPE REF TO zcl_hr_main_control.
    * set (MVC) model
      lr_my_parent ?= me->m_parent.
      set_model( model_instance = lr_my_parent->model
                       model_id = 'Z' ).
      me->model = lr_my_parent->model.
    ENDMETHOD.
    method DO_REQUEST.
    * datadeclaration
      DATA: abs      TYPE REF TO if_bsp_page.
    * if input is available, dispatch this input to subcomponent.
    * this call is only necessary for toplevel controllers.
      dispatch_input( ).
    * if any of the controllers has requested a navigation,
    * do not try to display, but leave current processing
      IF is_navigation_requested( ) IS NOT INITIAL.
        RETURN.
      ENDIF.
    * output current view (create, set attibutes, and call)
      abs = create_view( view_name = 'to_disp.htm' ).
    * set attribute model if needed
      abs->set_attribute( name = 'model' value = model ).
    * call master views
      call_view( abs ). "calls itself
    endmethod.

  • Empty iTunes, then Restore Some Playlists from Time Machine?

    My MacBook Pro is full, mainly because of the massive collection of music. Everything is backed up on Time Machine. I want to reduce my iTunes library by about 50% to regain some capacity. Can I delete my entire iTunes library off the MacBook, then reinstall only the playlists that I want from Time Machine? What's the best/safest way to do this?

    +I just restored my MBP from Time Machine, everything went fine. But I feel my MBR start up much slower than before. So now I want to do a clean install Leopard.+
    Wait on the erase and install. Launch Disk Utility which is in the Applications > Utilities folder and Verify your disk and repair permissions. If Verify shows any errors boot from the Leopard install DVD by holding the "c" key down until the spinning gear appears. Pick a language and choose Utilities > Disk and run Repair until no errors appear. Repair permissions.
    If that doesn't work try resetting the PRAM which quite often fixes slow boot times.

    +Would like to ask you guys who experiences in Time Machine that after installing Leopard, I want to restore some applications from Time Machine such as MS office, Wow, Photoshop...Will they fully function if I restore from TM?+
    I don't know about Wow but Photoshop and MS Office install too many files in too many places for it to be practical to restore them from Time Machine backups after doing an erase and install. You need to reinstall those from the original disks for those applications.

  • Restore some application from time machine problem.

    Hi Everybody,
    I just restored my MBP from Time Machine, everything went fine. But I feel my MBR start up much slower than before. So now I want to do a clean install Leopard.
    I would like to ask you guys who experiences in Time Machine that after installing Leopard, I want to restore some applications from Time Machine such as MS office, Wow, Photoshop...Will they fully function if I restore from TM?
    I acknowledge that some applications are like packages so after installing in Mac OS, they are actually located in different places in the system. Whereas others is like small application so we just copy and use. So if big applications as packages, I can not just copy from TM and put it in my new Leopard to use, can't I? If I can't, so is there any ways I can copy it back and use?
    I am so confusing about this and I hope very much that somebody could help me out this problem, I would greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

    To minimise loss... Connect to iTunes on the computer you Usually Sync with and Restore from the most recent Backup...

    Hi,
    I need to download some data from my iphone prior to backing it up. When connecting to itunes it is suggesting I restore it now. I will lose quite an amount of data if I cannot find a workaround. Is there any way to get access to contacts, notes and photo's before I restore the phone?
    Phone details are: model: A1429

    IMEI:      013412004666230

    Thanks for the update. I went through the restore process and all the data I thought I would lose was there. The data must have been copied straight away before the update failed over.

  • Synced my iPhone and lost some data

    Synced my iPhone and lost some data (not all) in contacts.  Sync worked before.  How do I get back to before sync?

    You're welcome.
    Does having Outlook 2007 mean you are syncing your iPhone Contacts with Outlook 2007 and the contacts were lost there as well?
    If so and if your routine computer backup includes your Outlook data, restore your Outlook contacts from your Outlook data backup.

    So what is your question?
    If you forgot your encryption password:
    Warning: Make sure it's a password you will remember or write it down for safekeeping. If you encrypt an iPhone backup in iTunes and forget your password, you can't restore from backup and your data will be unrecoverable.
    If you can't remember the password and want to start again, you must perform a full software restore and chooseset up as a new device when iTunes prompts you to select the backup from which to restore.

I do not want to put these files on my Mac. How do I do this? Where do I put these files on my Time Capsule? Will it affect the functioning of my Time Capsule?

    Mixing files with data is not always great idea.
    See info here.
    Q3 http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
    Why not just connect the PC directly to the TC by ethernet and copy the files over?
    It is hugely faster and much less mucking around.
    In windows load the airport utility for windows.. if you have not already as this will help you access the drive.

    All content from iTunes is tied to the account that downloaded it, so the id that shows when trying to download updates should be the account that 'owns' that app. Do you recognise the id that is showing e.g. has anybody else downloaded or synced content to your iPad ?
