Erasing old email to free up space

I am not sure if this is the right forum to post this, but here goes...
My hard drive is getting bogged down with data (50 GB free on my 300 GB MacPro drive).  I downloaded Disk Inventory X (which is great by the way) and it showed that my biggest data hog was my recovered Gmail mesages in my Library folder.  I do not need to store all of these email files and attachments on my laptop hard drive.  What is the best way to get rid of all of these files safely?
Thanks!

Sure. You really only need one backup of the catalog... so long as it's a good backup ;-)
I keep a couple backups, but really not more than that on the local HD. More backups are better in locations you can get to in case of disaster... i.e outside the structure where your primary and most recent backup are located.

Who is the provider of your email account, and is it IMAP or POP? If you are using an AOL IMAP account, for example, their policy is to remove messages from your Inbox folder after 27 days. More info, please, as Mail does not have any setting within it to remove messages from any Inbox.

What is the precise wording of the message that is occurring?
Are  you attempting to update via iTunes on a computer or over the air on the device?
How much free space is actually on the device?
If updating via iTunes on the computer, how much free space on the computer?

How do I clean up mail in my icloud?  I have already deleted old mail (from all my e-mail accounts) on all devices, and emptied the junk & deleted files, but it still shows that I am at max on my icloud. What do I do to free up space? (photos & apps do not take up that much room).  When I go to manage storage on any device & it will display how much room each program or app is using, it still shows that my e-mail is taking up the most room.  Is there a way to actually log on to the icloud server to manage what it stored there?  If so, how do I do it?  Also, on a related subject,  why does my mail not sync accross all devices?   ie. when I delete an email on one device, why do I still see it on all my other devices?  How can I change this?
I have an iphone5, ipad2, ipod 4th gen, ipod 3rd gen, all running on my same apple id - but I have a PC not a Mac home computer - is this part of the problem?  Looking to upgrade to a Mac sometime this year...
    Thank-you for the help!

I do have the Time Capsule and spoke to Apple Care here in Sydney about it yesterday.  They told me my mail is not backed up there unless I create a special folder. I just tried ringing them again but Apple Care is closed today...
Mail is backed up automatically. If you make backups automatically, open Mail application and then, open the Time Machine app (in /Applications/Utilities). You will access to the Time Machine interface, and you will be able to see all your mails of all the backups you have, and you will be able to restore them. It means that your mails are backed up onto the Time Capsule

The genius bar technicians can check your MBP for possible hardware problems and specific software issues that you may have.  The diagnosis will be free.  Any extensive repairs will not be free.
If you have minor software problems, you essentially will have to deal with them yourself.  Examine these two comprehensive documents for possible problem definition and solutions.  If you encounter problems that you are unable to cope with, start a new discussion and there will be persons willing to assist you in solving them.

Do not concern yourself about the backups.  They will be deleted automatically if space is needed for other data:

  • I moved my year old emails to my Archive box to save iCloud space, when I did that my space used went from 450mb to 990mb?

I moved my year old emails to my Archive box to save iCloud space, when I did that my space used went from 450mb to 990mb? Like I doubled the amount in my inbox? only they definitely moved not copied from my inbox.

I cannot find this 300GB "Backup" in the Finder, only in the Storage info when I check "About This Mac".
You are probably using Time Machine to backup your MacBook Pro, right? Then the additional 300 GB could be local Time Machine snapshots.  Time Machine will write the hourly backups to the free space on your hard disk, if the backup drive is temporarily not connected. You do not see these local backups in the Finder, and MacOS will delete them, when you make a regular backup to Time Machine, or when you need the space for other data.
See Pondini's page for more explanation:   What are Local Snapshots?   http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
I have restarted my computer, but the information remains the same. How do I reclaim the use of the 300GB? Why is it showing up as "Backups" when it used to indicate "Photos"? Are my photos safe on the external drive?
You have tested the library on the external drive, and so your photos are save there.
The local TimeMachine snapshot probably now contains a backup of the moved library.  Try, if connecting your Time Machine drive will reduce the size of your local Time Machine snapshots.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Assuming you have finished with your old backup.....
You can see what your iCloud storage is used for and delete any unwanted content at settings > iCloud > backup & storage > manage......

My iPhone has my old email set up throught iCloud. How do I reset my new username with the device without deleting everything. And if I have to delete my old account, will everything (contacts, pictures, games, apps, etc.) be erased from my phone.

Your old ID connects to an icloud account containing all your data (email, contacts, etc.)  If you then use a different ID, you will connect to a different account, which results in losing all your "apple" data, like emails, contacts, calendars, etc.
However, Apple IDs are also used to connect to an itunes store account, with is different.  You can keep using the old itunes store ID to keep all your purchases (but if you change to a different ID, you will lose all purchased items) and use the new ID for icloud (but losing emails, contacts, etc. from the old account).

How can i transfer files from my hard drive to an USB drive to free up space when the operating system isn't working. or do i need to erase disk through disk utilities without erasing data (but will it delete my programs such as photoshop, office, creative suite?

Connect the computer to another Mac and put it in FireWire Target Disk mode, or use the Disk Utility to clone the drive or image specific folders with the USB drive as the target. After you've copied off everything you want, you'll likely need to erase the drive and reinstall the applications.

    Restore the phone as new.
Load the content she wants on there.

  • What happens if i delete an old backup from my iCloud to free up space?

What happens if i delete an old backup from my iCloud to free up space?

Nothing. You will lose that backup but you will still be able to make backups in the future if you want to. You can also remove things you do not need from the backup, so you do not have to lose everything from your backup.

  • How to delete all email attachments to free up space?

I'm on a MBP with a 240 GB SSD. Somehow my Mail folder is 90 GB!
I'd like to have an expert tell me how to go about deleting all of the attachments from my SSD so that I can free up space.
My set up is several work email accounts, and one personal email account, on Mail.app, all IMAP via Google Apps and Gmail.
I found this, and tried it, but only freed up 4 GB, which doesn't make sense to me???

Could you break this down for me more specifically?  Hit menu after I've gotten into my email?  I don't see delete in the menu (only the box to the left of the actual email itself).  Thanks for any help!!
