Erasing Time Machine disk for reuse
The disk I have been using for Time Machine backups is now too small for the amount it has to back up. I would like to erase it and put it to a different use, but I don't see any option in any menu for doing this. I would like to swap it out for a bigger drive and keep the smaller one for other purposes.
Can anyone tell me how to erase a Time Machine drive so that the Mac will see it as just another hard drive?
Use Disk Utility in your Utilities folder to erase the drive.
Remember, everything will be gone.

Copying time machine disk for long time archive
not certain this is correct forum.
I have a 1 gb raid ext drive (two 1gb disks in raid 1). I use it as my Time Machine drive. It is now full.
I want to copy this data to a single 1GB drive, put it in permanent storage, and then reformat and reuse the raid drive as time machine #2.
This, I hope, would allow me to have the security of a raid setup as my current time machine disk and, when it is full, I can copy to another disk, then continually reuse the raid disk, within reason, of course, as my latest Time Machine disk #4, etc.
Can I do this and how would I do this?.I think you can still do that with incremental backups to a clone, but I'm not certain.
I poked around Pondini's Time Machine FAQ and didn't see anything about making a duplicate of the TM disk.
As I stated earlier, I think it would work. And, I would imagine CCC or SuperDuper could clone the TM drive.

Time Machine disk for other uses?
I have a new 1 TB external drive that I just setup as my Time Machine disk. I also need a place to store a large quantity of photos that will not fit on my hard disk.
It is ok to use the external drive as both a Time Machine disk and a regular storage device? Thanks.You've posted in the +Time Capsule+ forum, but it sounds like you have an external HD that you're going to connect directly to your Mac.
If that's the case, then you can use Disk Utility to partition the drive, per #5 or #6 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum.
The downside to that, however, is that while you can get Time Machine to back up the other partition on it's drive, you'll get a warning message that it's not a good idea to have both the originals and backups on the same physical HD -- when it fails (and they all do, sooner or later), you risk losing both copies. So you'll need either some alternate way to back up that partition, or get a second external HD.

Using external hard drive connected to desktop as time machine disk for laptop
I recently purchased an external hard drive for the purpose of backing up my laptop and desktop macs. Both are running Mountain Lion (10.7.5). The desktop is physically connected to both the hard drive and to my modem. I have enabled pretty much every sharing option on both the laptop and desktop. When my router crapped out I began just using the internet sharing capabiilty.
I have been able to chose the desktop as the disk for backing up my laptop, but I want to use the hard drive (connected to the desktop) as the disk. I cant figure out how to do this yet. I can easily access the hard drive by using either the "connect as user" option. I thought that perhaps I could broadcast the connection somehow as an airport connection, but I don't know how to, or if this is even possible.
The desktop is a mac mini, and the laptop is a macbook pro. Both were purchased in mid 2011.This may assist you:

Time Machine backup for old computer has been named for new computer
On my new Time Capsule, I backed up the entire disk from my older computer. While consulting with a live help technician for an unrelated problem, he had me reset the Time Capsule using the newer computer. To resume use of the Time Machine backup from my older computer, I had to gain permission . . . and subsequently discovered the reason why. Reseting with the new computer caused the backup volume to be renamed with the new computer's name.
Sooo, 1) how do I correct the naming error, and 2) will further confusion occur when I then go to back up the new computer?It may or may not ask you to reformat the disk when you set it up as the backup for that new computer. If it does, I think you can cancel it.
What I would do is open Migration Assistant, then import your applications/documents/etc. onto the new computer, and then use the Time Machine disk for backup (formatting it if it asks you to).
You'll at least have recent files and stuff like that, which may not be as good as an incremental history but at least it's something. -
My external Time Machine disk is almost full. I know TM is supposed to erase the oldest back-ups to make room for newer ones but is it safe for me to just erase the back-ups from 2 or so years ago to make room for TM as well as anything else I might want to add to this external drive?
Time Machine makes room for backups as necessary in a complex and sophisticated fashion, and it's not something to mess with lightly. However there are instructions at the bottom of this link which tell you how you can. No green icon for time machine disk ?
Just a very minor question:
My time machine disk now appears with the same yellow icon that is used for all "standard" hard disk drives.
Is there no more green disk icon ? Or can I set this manually ? (if so, how ?)Thanks Stef_Heck
You are perfectly right: at some stage this morning (something like 10 hours after having installed Yosemite) the icon became green automatically.
So just a question of being patient
Now 100% happy with Yosemite (while I only was 99,5% happy before.....) -
Have to wait for Time Machine disk before opening or saving
I can't tell you how irritating it is, when it click open or save (any program) , to hear my Time Machine hard disk begin to spool up. As soon as hear that sound, I know that means I have to sit and wait for the Time Machine disk to initialize and get all set before I can save my work. This is majorly ticking me off.
This problem is present on any document i go to save/open.
Why is the OS trying access the Time Machine disk when I try to open or save anywhay??? There's no reason for that! No one is ever opening up and saving to Time Machine while doing normal workflow! The only thing the Time Machine hard drive should be responsible for is backing up!
I swear, I'm thinking about disconnecting my Time Machine disk while I'm working and just reconnect it when I'm away from the computer...it's getting that bad. I shouldn't have to do that. That's ridiculous.

The system will wake ALL hard disks when the save dialog is opened TM is not excepted from this. There is nothing very special a TM volume other than its icon.
There's no reason for that! No one is ever opening up and saving to Time Machine while doing normal workflow!
There are many users who use a TM drive for data other than TM backups.
What make and model is your drive? Some drives have power management controllers which have to be set with disk management software. If you have one of these drives you may need to turn off the hardware power management with this software. The problem here is that some manufactures only provide this software for Windows. Seagate is one such manufacturer -
Stop Disk Full Alerts for Time Machine disk?
Hi there,
I have an alert set up on a Mac Mini server to notify me if a disk gets over 50% full. Unfortunately, this is warning me now that the Time Machine disk is getting over 50% full, which is to be expected. Is there a way to set it so I am only notified if the system disk is getting full?

Lion Recovery from a Remote Time Machine Disk
I maintain the time machine backup for my MBP on a large USB drive hanging off of my Mac Mini. Yesterday I decided to upgrade the internal hard drive on my system to a faster, higher-capacity disk. I assumed that this would be very straightfoward given I had a complete time machine backup. Time machine has saved my bacon many times. It was slightly trickier than I expected so I am publishing this recipe in the hope that it helps someone else trying to accomplish the same thing.
The instructions below are in the context of a hard drive replacement. Skip to step 5 if you are just looking for the recovery instructions.
One last caveat, I have not tried this procedure over WIFI. I did my successful restore over a GigE hard line. It may or may not work over Wifi and I would bet WIFI greatly increases the odds that something unexpected might go wrong and it will probably take many times longer as well.

Before you start you need the following things:
A USB Drive that you don't mind erasing.
A tiny phillips screwdriver
A T4 torx driver
Step 0: Run Lion Recovery Disk Assistant
* download this from apple support http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1433
* this creates a USB stick that boots up the recover tools.
Step 1: Make sure time machine backup is up to date
Step 2: [paranoid] turn off time machine
Step 3: Cleanly shut down laptop
Step 4: Follow instructions in user manual to replace hard drive
* you can download your laptop user manual here - http://support.apple.com/manuals/#macbookpro
* this required a very tiny phillips head screwdriver and also a T4 torx screwdriver/bit
Step 4a: Be prudent: carefully save your old hard drive in case something goes wrong.
Step 5: Make sure laptop is on wall power
Step 6: Boot to recovery USB stick
* insert the stick, hold down option while booting
Step 7: Select "Restore From Time Machine Backup"
* When you get to the "Select a Backup Source" dialog you don't see your time machine share or any way to connect to a remote drive.
Step 8: Mount your remote backup
Open Terminal ( Utilities | Terminal... )
Run these commands:
mkdir /Volumes/tm
mount_afp afp://[username]:[password]@[name of host system].local/[name of remote disk] /Volumes/tm
you need to supply all of the arguments in brackets above
eg. mount_afp afp://fred:[email protected]/TimeMachine /Volumes/tm
You can test if this succeeded by running
ls /Volumes/tm
If you see the files you expect, then you successfully mounted your remote disk.
Now attach the sparsebundle that contains your remote system backup.
hdiutil attach /Volumes/tm/[MyMachine].sparsebundle
If this works when run "ls /Volumes" you should see a directory called "Time Machine Backups" in the list. Once that is done quit
the terminal application. When you do this you should see "Time Machine Backups" listed in the "Select a Backup Source" dialog.
Step 9: Select "Time Machine Backups" from menu
Step 10: Select the backup in time ( probably the most recent one from 10 minutes ago! )
Step 11: Select destination disk
Step 12: If your destination disk does not appear, format it with disk utility
Utilities | Disk Utility...
Select your new unformatted drive
Give your new drive a super duper clever name and then click Erase
Quit Disk Utility
Select your newly formatted and cleverly named root drive
Step 13: Go have some fun away from your computer., my system took about 4 hours to restore ~300GB.
Some number of hours later your system will reboot itself to the login screen and you will be good to go. Obviously don't do anything silly in the intervening time like
* Unplugging your laptop
* Turning off the system that hosts your time machine backup
* Resetting your network routerQuick answers.

Your only option is to install Lion onto the mini and then set up the other accounts. -
Why do I have time machine disk problem after closing and later reopening clamshell.
I consistently see the following after closing and later reopening my Macbook Pro (5,1). I have to unplug and replug my Time Machine USB drive.
The only thing new is Mountain Lion. The Time Machine disk has 229 GB free of 1.5 TB. I never had to unplug this drive under Lion.
Does anyone have any idea what is going on? I ran disc repair on Time Machine Drive yesterday, but it found nothing.

Time Machine is intended to be left enabled always whether a backup drive is connected or not. What Time Machine cannot handle properly is a situation where the backup drive loses power for whatever reason. Time Machine treats this, as does the OS, as an improper disconnect of an external drive without being properly ejected. This in turn throws Time Machine a little bit of a loop.
For you I would suggest not using Time Machine. Instead use a third-party backup utility that you can either schedule or run manually as you wish. They will work with the same drive you have used for Time Machine, but you will need to first erase the Time Machine drive using Disk Utility. Please DO NOT try dragging the Time Machine backups to the Trash.
Here are some good backup utilities you can try:

5. Synk Pro
6. Tri-Backup
Others may be found at MacUpdate. Each one can be used for a trial period. No need to pay for one until you've decided on which one you like best. I, for example, use Carbon Copy Cloner but please don't take that as a recommendation over the others. It's just my preference. All can be operated manually or can be set up to backup on a schedule you determine. Some can even be set up to backup as soon as the backup drive is connected.

Time Machine disk not recognised
My G5 PowerMac has been away for repair; it's needed a new logic board. It was away for nearly two weeks. Now Time Machine doesn't recognise the external drive which contains the Time Machine backups from last November. It wants to do a backup from scratch and says there isn't enough space on the disk.
Is there any way of getting the Time Machine to recognise the previous backups and start adding to them?
I'll be very grateful for any advice.To TM, it is a different computer. The logic board includes your Ethernet "Mac Address", which is a unique number that TM uses to be sure it knows which Mac is which.
There is a fairly elaborate way to attempt to persuade TM that the existing backups really are for your "new" Mac: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20080128003716101
It is very easy for the inexperienced user of Terminal (and the not-so-inexperienced as well) to make an error with Terminal, get no error message, and have it not work, so try it at your own risk.
But there is an alternative: hold down the Option key while selecting the TM icon in your Menubar. The +Enter Time Machine+ option changes to +Browse Other Time Machine Disks.+ That's a bit misleading, but it will take you into the normal TM interface where you can see and restore from the old set of backups.
Even if you're successful with the Terminal work, your first backup with the new logic board may be a full one -- every file and folder on your system. If TM decides to do that, you cannot prevent it.
So if your TM disk/partition isn't at least 2.5 times the size of the data it's backing-up, your best bet may be to just erase it with Disk Utility and let TM start over. -
Time Machine disk not mounting
I have an external HD with Time Machine running. My computer is going to the shop later today. All of a sudden, my little external HD didn't want to mount (and it's only 8 months old). I used Disk Utility and got it to mount, but it said it couldn't repair it. It said I should backup what I could and erase the drive. However, since Disk Utility hung while trying to finish, I decided to try it again on another Mac. This time it ran through the repair and said the disk is fine. It finished off with this statement: "Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required."
So here's my dilemma:
I'd rather NOT erase this drive, since it's got my Time Machine backup on it. On the other hand, if it is failing, I'd like to know why and take action before it causes a problem (i.e. warranty and the ability to get back up quickly when my Mac comes back). I do have other backups, but none as handy as this one.
If you have experienced this, I'd like to hear from you. And, if there is already a thread about this, I couldn't find it.
Thanks very much!I have a 2TB WD Western Digital portable external hard drive partitioned into two drives, one for storage and the other for Time Machine. For some reason my Time Machine drive wasn't mounting. I could not verify, repair, or even eject the HD at all for that matter. The Storage partition was working fine so I know that this is a software issue. I did what Linc Davis recommended and booted up into Recovery Mode and tried to verify and repair using the Disk Utility there with no luck. However I was able to mount the drive using the blue "Mount" button in Disk Utility and then I restarted the computer. Then my Time Machine partition was there and I was able to verify it and it has no problems. I then even performed a back up with no issues.
So this is in fact a software problem. The only thing that has changed for me is that I have just cloned my start up drive and put in a new SSD. Also I had to unplug my MacBook Pro battery to reset the SMC (even the keyboard was not working) due to the bug where your computer turns off and dies because of Lightning strike (plugging in a Lightning cable). Which would also be a software bug. That post is here... My Mac randomly just turned off and now it wont turn back on, the charger light is faintly flashing green and amber?!?! -
Time Machine disk and Airport Extreme issues
I have a portable USB drive I use as my Time Machine disk. It works great, but only when I manually mount the disk.
I recently got an Airport Extreme, which allows me to mount a disk off of it. So, I figure I'll mount my USB Time Machine disk there so Time Machine backs up hourly.
Well, the first issue I get is that Time Machine tells me the disk isn't properly formatted! Odd, since I've had it configured via the app for backups. I go into preferences to select a disk, and I choose my Time Machine disk. When I next tried to run a backup, it indicated I don't have enough room on the disk, requiring ~106 GB .... almost as if it thought it hadn't done any backups before and was going to run a full one.
I dismounted the drive from the Airport Extreme and hooked it back up locally, and I get the same results within Time Machine.
I also noticed a new file on the root of my Time Machine, with a .sparsebundle extension. Is this related in any way?
Anyway, what can I do, short of a full reset of my Time Machine disk, to get it working through my Airport Extreme?Me again ...
I hooked up my USB TM disk again to my Airport Extreme. I don't see it as a mounted drive in my Sidebar. However, I see it under the Devices on my sidebar, under "my" computer, then Time Machine Backups, then a backups.backupdb folder.
To start fresh with TM backups I'll need to erase the drive. From what I see, do I just delete the 'backups.backupdb' folder and its contents? -
Hi everyone:
My Time Machine disk is a 1TB drive on my Mac Pro. It backs up my other three 250 GB Disks on the same computer (one being my Macintosh HD) . It is full and is starting to erase the oldest backups (from 2 years ago). My understanding is that I really have nothing to fear about losing anything since my Time Machine disk is clearly much larger than the 3 Disks it its backing up. Am I thinking right? Is it possible I could lose anything that wasn't already on any of the other Drives? My apologies if this question has been answered before but I looked for my specific question and didn't find it answered.

PSE8 trial will not load onto my MacBook
I have downloaded the free trial twice now and no luck either time. I have a MacBook, 2 years old, with OS X 10.6.4 loaded and plenty of available space - so requirements are met. It takes me about 2 hours to download the Free Trial and eats up 1.24
