Erazer X510 Hot Swap Drive?

This may seem like a dumb question...
I bought a new erazor X510 and am in the process of configuring it with Win8.1   The unit has a hot swap drive bay, which is a very cool feature.   I purchased a new 1TB western digital SATA drive today and now need to install it...
is it really as simple as putting it in the drive slot and plugging it in?   The machine doesnt see it.   Of course, I dont know if I have to format it, connect some cables or what.   The Erazer booklet only really describes how to put the HD in the hot swap chassis.
How do I get the machine to see the new HD?
kind regards
Eric

I to have a question about the hotswap bays.
I purchased one and found it very useful (once I had downloaded the trial version software - Swap Manager - from the vipower website - http://www.vipower.com).  Issue is that given the trial period for swap-manager is over the drive becomes useless, becuase without it every time i go to turn the power of via the switch the system locks up.
Question is whether there is a way in xp professional that allows you to swap out drives without closing down.
Or anyone know of a crack for swap-manager (as I refuse to by software when I was told that the hardware was all i needed).

  • Ts440 70AQ000BUK info on Hot Swap drives

I have just purchased a TS440 70AQ000BUK online and am wondering about the Hot Swap drive bay. Does this machine come with caddy's i can install my own drives in or do i need to procure caddys. if i need to procure caddys can someone advise the Lenovo part number and or provide a link to where i can procure them from. Lastly this machine permits 4 hot swap drives, is it possible to connect 1 or 2 drives directly to the mother board too? can i replace the Optical drive with disk?
This is a UK spec machine and i am in the UK. the manuals i have seen so far are very vague on the detail i have requested above.
    Thanks in advance
    Chris

For anyone else passing through, this link is to the parts list for the ts440
    http://download.lenovo.com/parts/ThinkCentre/ts440_parts_listing_09252013.pdf
the hot swap caddy trays are part number::  03X39692 described as:: FRU HS 3.5" HDD Tray V3.0
searching the web for 03X39692 shows lots of sellers on eBay selling these for ~$15 with extortionate shipping to UK of ~$12 per item.

  • TS430 hot swap drive tray options

I purchased a TS430 without any hard drives and need the drive trays to get it operational. IBM/Lenovo is out of the trays for the hot swap drive bay. There's a long wait 2-3 months to get these parts, either 03X3835 or 03X3696. Found a third party selling these pieces but he's asking $80-85 for each, way too expensive.
Is there a third party product that'll be compatible instead? Anyone using a tray for another IBM/Lenovo model or just a generic tray that works on TS430? Please let me know. Thanks!

No 03x3835 in-stock at the IBM Parts Sales number you posted above, possibly months for more; and while I specifically asked about alternative/replacement frus, server tech support (in Atlanta, GA, and seems to be staffed with very few knowledgable people) said there weren't any active ones. Lenovo only sells through the channel, no direct sales for server parts, so presumably one of their distributors (Ingram, Synnex, Supercom, Tech Data, D&H, Hartco) have them...
As an authorized reseller, I just brought in a TS430 0441-11U for a customer, but now I cannot find any drive trays for the 8 drives we're using.
It seems every time I try and sell/service something Lenovo, I have this 10+ phone call run around trying to get something done that should be easy enough.

  • TD100x hot swap drives

I need to add drives to my TD100x.  I currently had 3 drives in a RAID 5 configuration.
Can I add individual drives without creating a raid volume? I want to use then for image backup of the RAID.
I have been using external USB 2 drives, but it takes 5 hours to image 300GB
    Thanks to all,

you can format a non-configured drive in the LSI BIOS, LSI software, or windows disk management (diskmgmt.msc).
the hot-swap brackets come with lenovo drives.   however, you might be able to find the brackets online.   the brackets you need might match what was discussed in this thread.

  • Question: Hot swapping drives and backups ......

I have a client that wants to move from a PC server with a NAS to a XServe and a XServe RAID. It is a creative ad agency with less than 500GB of data. The client also wants a backup solution, but does not want to deal with changing tapes. Current backup is to 2 external drives that are swapped every monday ( After the Friday backup ) I cam up with a creative solution for the client but am not sure if it will work.
    My solution is the following:
Install a copy of SuperDuper on the XServe.
RAID Array 1 will be in the first 4 drive bays .... 4x250gb drives in a RAID 5 setup for 750gb of storage.
In the second set of drive bays I propose the following.
    1 500gb drive ( Actually 2 of them )
I want to set up SuperDuper to run a smart backup every Friday night from the Data RAID to the single 500GB drive.
Then on monday, the client can remove the drive from the Xserve RAID and slide in the spare drive.
Both drives will have the same volume name of "Backup"
Backed up drive will be placed in transport box for off site storage, until the following week.
Is this a possibility? Its my understanding that the drives are Hot Swappable, and that if both drives have the same volume name, then SuperDuper should have no problem doing the backup without need for additional scripts.
    Any thoughts or suggestions?

    Reese,
Not taking it argumentative at all, your correct, I came for advice.
According to Apple Enterprise Support a JBOD disk will automatically mount on a XServe RAID when plugged in.
I dont think the user is confused by firewire cables, just that its more work for the customer. In fact they are already doing a weekly backup to external drive and swapping them every monday. This is something the client specifically wants to get away from however.
Resse, I value your advice and input, thanks for taking the time to reply.
The client however wants to get away from external drives and does not want to go to tape backup and juggle those.
I could label the two swappable drives to help avoid confusion. Using only the first 4 drives in the 1st controller does leave some room for growth. But I do get your point.
I would love to go with something else, If I could come up with something that doesnt involve External drives or tape. We had looked at offsite backup, but was unable to find something that worked with Macintosh and was cost effective for 500gb of data storage
Any other ideas besides the firewire drives?

  • Adding 3 new hot swap drives

I have 3 harddrives to my server. It is RAID 5. The machine sees the drives but Netware 6.5 does not. I have done scans from imanager and nssmu. What do I have do do now to make Netware see it so I can add the space to sys volume? If your answer is make RAID see it, how do I do that?

So can you share with us the specific hardware involved? What is the patch level of NetWare? And so on...
For example, if you have a HP Smart Array just shoving in disks does not do anything, logical drives need to be defined which makes the LUNs that NetWare can consume. this can be done with cpqonlin, for example, withouth rebooting the server.
Obviously all this is particularly HW and driver dependent, so what HW do you have?

  • Hot swapping DLT tape drives

Is it possible to hot-swap a tape drive on an Enterprise 4000 running Solaris 5.5.1?
I have an E4000 with an array and tape drive attached. The drive seems to be kaput. I can get it to run for a little while, but my cron backups are failing. I've done all the hardware chacking I can (I'm 2500 miles away from the server) and had the on-site techs check the scsi connections, recycle the unit, clean it, et al.
I don't know where in the chain the drive is, or even if it's on the same scsi bus as the array. Is there any way I can find out which bus it's on, and which bus the array is on?
Assuming it's either the last device on the chain attached to the array or on it's own scsi bus, can I swap it with another drive set to the same scsi address?
    Thanks,
    Mark

As Emily Latilla said, "Never mind..." Answered the question myself.

  • Xseve RAID Drives won't hot swap

    Hi all
Our Xseve Raid drives seem to have stopped hot swapping. Pressing the pop out bar should (according to the manual) turn off the green power light on the drive enabling you to just pull it out. However the green light never goes off.
    Any ideas
    Cheers

    Uhhh...
That's not how it works. If you release the handle, the drive will keep running and operate just fine. Releasing the handle does not tell the RAID "prepare to unmount." It in fact does nothing.
You can just yank the drive. It will beep, and complain (as it should). You can insert a new drive and the RAID set will be rebuilt on it (so long as the drive is indicated to be "available for use" in the Xserve RAID).
I don't know what manual you're reading, but it's wrong.

  • Hot swapping backup drives

I have a SPARC T5120 server - running production. I want to hot-swap the SCSI backup drives. The original backup drives are not mounted file systems, the system is running UFS and the drives are not mirrored. Can I simply swap out and mount the drives, or do I need to run cfgadm or anything else in order to recognize the drives? The drives are the same size. This is in preference to powering down the server and rebooting with the new backup drives in place. System is running Solaris 10. All suggestions appreciated.

    Running cfgadm, I see this:
    Ap_Id Type Receptacle Occupant Condition
    c1 scsi-sata connected configured unknown
    c2 scsi-bus connected unconfigured unknown
    c3 scsi-bus connected unconfigured unknown
    The vebose listing is:
    Ap_Id Receptacle Occupant Condition Information
    When Type Busy Phys_Id
    c1 connected configured unknown
    unavailable scsi-sata n /devices/pci@0/pci@0/pci@2/scsi@0:scsi
    c2 connected unconfigured unknown
    unavailable scsi-bus n /devices/pci@0/pci@0/pci@8/pci@0/pci@1/pci@0/scsi@8:scsi
    c3 connected unconfigured unknown
    unavailable scsi-bus n /devices/pci@0/pci@0/pci@8/pci@0/pci@1/pci@0/scsi@8,1:scsi
The mounted, operating disks are /dev/dsk/c1t0d0s#, the backup disks are /dev/dsk/c1t1d0s#. Will running the cfgadm unconfigure have any effect on the mounted drives? Don't want to unconfigure my boot drives while the system is running production.

  • MSI 7125 board and Esata drive hot swapping

Hello. New member with a MSI-7125 board. I have the OEM board that Geeks had. Pretty much the same as the regular 7125. I want to use an external eSATA drive and attach it using a simple eSATA bracket that just connects to the board's internal sata ports, or I will use a PCI controller card. I'm told that either will work, and that I can have hot swapping on either too.  I want to be able to turn on and off the drive without turning off windows. I don't want to use the external drive as my main drive. Can anyone confirm that either interface method will work? I'm supposing the simple bracket might be faster since it will have no PCI bus to go through. Thanks

I've listed below a couple of sites that you may be intrested in. They offer the option of using eSATA or SATA on the rear plates. Don't confuse them as they use different plugs on the cables.

  • Internal drives hot swap-able??

I have 4 drives in my G4 MDD and I only need 2 on all the time and the other are back ups that I usually only use once a week.
I usually leave them unplugged until I need them, then with the G4 off plug them in and start up
My Question is: can I plug them in while the computer is running? are they hot swap-able like a firewire drive or is it safer to shut down plug them in and restart
    Thanks

Hello! No you should not try re-connecting them while powered up. You're really asking for trouble by leaving them off and you're not saving any electricity to amount to anything. The strat/stop cycle of a hard drive is the hardest thing on a drive and takes many times the electricity than running them for many hours. Leaving them on all the time also keeps them at more of a constant temperature. I've seen drives that were working find day in and day out and when stored for a few weeks sometimes won't boot at all. I run everything 24/7/365 and have for over 10 years with no significant problems. Sure a hard drive will fail from time to time but I'm running some many yeras old. Hope this answers your question. • T60: Ultrabay: Hot swap of OD works, but not of a certain HDD

    post-edit (more precisely asked question)
    Hi,
    I have a T60 with Windows XP 2002 SP2 as Operating System.
My question is about hot swapping a certain device; i.e. connecting it to running machine.
    - When I hot swap an optical drive (DVD Multi by Lenovo (Hitachi)) into the Ultrabay slot, it is immediately recognized by the OS. It appears in the Windows Drive Management as well as in the Explorer.
    - In contrast, when I hot swap a 500GB SATA HDD in a 'Leicke' adapter into the Ultrabay slot, the HDD is not recognized by the OS. The HDD does not appear in the Drive Management as a data carrier and the (four) logical drives on the HDD are not shown in the explorer.
(Electrically, the adapter seems to be properly connected: the HDD's and the T60's control LEDs are on.)
However, AFTER REBOOTING the T60 with the Ultrabay HDD ALREADY INSERTED, the Drive Management recognizes the HDD as data carrier as well as the logical drives on it without any problem. Even the correct drive letters appear automatically.
=>> How can I make the OS recognize a hot swapped HDD (in an adapter) as well as an hot swapped optical drive?
    Thanks a lot,
    rolf
    post-edit 2010-12-10 02:20 PM:
I now borrowed a colleague's 320GB HDD (Samsung HM320JI) and used it with the same Ultrabay adapter in my T60 - and the hot-swapping works perfectly... :-)
So, obviously my 500GB HDD (Seagate Momentus 5400.6) is the actual trouble maker. :-(
==>> What can I do at the hard disk, in the OS or elsewhere to make Windows XP accept the 500GB also when hot swapped and not only after rebooting?
(Sorry for my somewhat off-topic questions before, but I didn't expect the problem could be related to the disk.).
    old version:
t60: hot swap of ultrabay HDD
    Hi,
after succeslessly searching several www places and the ThinkVantage help function for a precise and comprehensible  answer, I hope to find it here.
I have a 500GB SATA HDD in an ultrabay adapter. I want to be able to (re-)connect it with the running t60 because I neither want it to be plugged in all the time, nor do I want to reboot the t60 for accessing the HDD's data.
(post-edit: I want the Ultrabay device to be handled like an USB device; i.e. I want it to be recognized by Windows XP also when it is inserted AFTER booting)
    - Is 'hotSwapping' the proper word for what I want to do?
    - If so, how can I find out if my t60 is capable of hotswapping?
    - If it is, how do I switch on the function?
Thanks a lot and best regards,
    rolf

    pommesmann, welcome to the forum,
yes hot swapping is the correct term, you must however ensure you use the "safely remove hardware" - "Hardware sicher entfernen" function of the OS you are using. There is an icon in the task bar; in XP it looks like a pc card with agreen arrow above it, in W7 an usb stick with a white tick in a green circle.
to be absolutely correct, it's not 100% the hardware that is hot swapping capable; the OS needs to support it. Windows OSes since W2K have supported it. Therefore if you have W2K, XP, Vista or W7 your T60 is capable of hot swapping.
you don't need to turn it on, it's there by default with the above mentioned OSes.
Caution. Do not create shortcuts from files / folders on the bay hard drive to your desktop; when trying to "stop" it using the remove hardware function you will get a message that you can't because it's being accessed. Another example is music files on the drive which are linked to albums in media player, this can also cause problems. One that really got me wondering one day turned out to be a file that I had sent as an attachment in an e-mail; as I hadn't closed Outlook Windows thought the drive was still being accessed.
    Hope this helps

  • Best Portable USM HDD for K450 hot-swap bay

I have read suggestions for the best portable USM HDD for K430 hot-swap bay, but I'm not sure if the K450 has the exact same hot-swap bay as the K430.  Are the drives suggested for the K430 the same ones that would be best for the K450?  I haven't even received my Lenovo K450 yet. I ordered it on Thursday and it will arrive on Monday Oct. 14, 2013. I just want to understand the hot-swap bay because I thought there was a way I could use a hard drive out of my old computer and put it in an external drive case and plug it right in.  After reading the literature here in the community posts, that doesn't appear to be the purpose of the bay.  I wish it would work that way because I wanted to easily offload some documents that are saved on my 500 GB Western Digital 3.5" hard drive that I would have liked to move to my new computer easily.  My old computer is not working at all anymore, so I can't just drag and drop them from my extra 500 GB drive from that computer onto the new one.

I purchased this same drive and it works great!!  It is too bad that Lenovo didn't tell me this when I contacted their support team.  It would have saved me a lot of time!!

  • How do I enable the hot swap function on motherboard MS-7758?

    Hi,
I just installed a hot swap rack in my computer that runs windows 8.1. It shows up in device manager under Other devices->unknowns device, but the rack will not read a hard drive when i put one in it. I contacted the manufacturer of the hot swap bay, and they told me that i should make sure that the hot swap function is turned on and I do not know how to do that. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • Lenovo Erazer x510 boot problem

    Hi,
I just received my new Erazer x510 yesterday.
When trying to boot it for the first time it gives me an error: Error 1962: no operating system found.
Also when checking from BIOS for bootable devices it sometimes shows HDD but sometimes it's blank.
    Basically HDD is dissapearing.
Searching the error from google gives mostly an answer that HDD is faulty.
Is this true? Or is there anything else to be done?
    Thanks in advance!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    I'll answer myself.
I moved the Hard Drive to another slot and it started working.
So the problem was that computer didn't recognize the HDD.
