Ergonomic Keyboard Required

Hi everyone.
I just became a Mac user yesterday and I have discovered that there are no reliable ergonomic keyboards for iMac except those sold by Microsoft. My hands are x-large (1.5in larger than the average male) and I'm a software engineer, so I NEED an ergonomic keyboard. I'm going to get one of the MS keyboards, but I've experienced their whimsy in the past (i.e., when they deliberately break their drivers for a competitor's OS). This puts me in a very precarious position. I'm not alone, a simple google search indicates that this has been an issue for many years. Here's an example of a particularly relevant article: http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/24/ask-engadget-best-ergonomic-keyboard-for-a-ma c/.
So, I think the community needs to get together and ask directly for mac to either design an alternative keyboard that is suitable for people with larger hands, or to strike some kind of deal with a company that specializes in this sort of thing. I do not want to be at the mercy of MS for long.

I put this into the Apple feedback.  Maybe if there was a concerted effort by everybody, things might happen.  But we need thousands to let Apple know.
---->
Please, for the sake of all us Mac people be we desktop and/or mobile users, be aware that there is a desperate need for the Apple products to have the option of a true ergonomic keyboard similar to what Adesso used to offer with their Tru-Form line (but now backlit).
Take a look at your keyboards; small, compact, certainly NOT diverse and almost totally useless to those of us who suffer with any form of physical disability associated with their hands and/or wrists.  I cannot believe that Apple, which has continually demonstrated how important the human interface is with the product, still continually turns a blind eye to this area.  Apple is now big enough to make once again one like you did back in the 80's & '90's.  Please.
Thank you.  Apple since 1979 & **** proud of it.

  • External ergonomic keyboard with touch pad

I'm a MacBook Pro user, and have an external ergonomic keyboard (at home).  It does not have a touch pad, but I'm looking for one that does.  Any suggestions?

    Per the Info here:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC380LL/A?fnode=MTY1NDA1Mg&mco=MTg1ODE3MDE
the Magic Trackpad requires Mac OS 10.6.4 or higher and your equipment line says you are at 10.4.9. You'd need to upgrade your OS. Any MacBook Pro can run OS 10.6.

  • Is Microsoft Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 compatible with Mac mini?

Hi, I am thinking of getting a Mac mini. I currently have a Microsoft Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 which I use with my HP laptop. Does anyone know if it is fully compatible with Mac mini?

It is compatible -- to a certain extent.
The Windows key will become the  (Command) key. The Mac will let you know that the keyboard you plugged in couldn't be identified, so it will ask you to type the Z key, followed by the / key. Choose ANSI and you should be ready to use the keyboard. Any multimedia keys or extra keys not part of the standard keyboard layout will have no function. The F12 key becomes the Eject key.
(PS/2 keyboards are not compatible with the Mac, unless you purchase a $15 PS/2-to-USB converter.)

  • Wireless keyboard requires constant re-pairing

    Hello Apple Community,
My wireless keyboard requires Blutooth re-pairing with my 27" iMac everytime I start the iMac up. Very frustrating.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks,

    Hello:
Try resetting the PRAM and also make the device a favorite.

  • Ergonomic keyboard 4000 not working properly

    Hi all,
I have a very weird problem with my MS Ergonomic 4000 keyboard (USB) connected to my MacBook Pro (OS X 10.7.5). I've connected it in the past and it worked just fine but now, it's not functioning properly. I'm typing this on the MacBook keyboard, but here's what happens when I type the letter i using the ergonomic keyboard: i9
This is just from one tap of the letter i. It only happens with the lower-case i, and not with when typing a capital I (shift+i) This happens with other keys as well.
I searched the forums and support sites and so have since both removed intellitype and then installed intellitype 8.2 for the proper OS, but still no change.
Any help / advice will be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

    Thanks Esquared,
I have the same problem in safe mode. I just tried it on my iMac and it does the same thing there. Also, when I press Shift + any key, a dialog pops up asking me to assign a function to a number key that I didn't press. The numlock key types "4" as well.
So I'm guessing that the issue is with the keyboard itself. The question is, can anything be done? It's relatively new and I'd hate to have to just throw it out.
    Thanks in advance.

Your ergonomic KB is no doubt, third party. Contact the manufacturer.

  • Apple Ergonomic Keyboard... I'll be good, I promise

The new ultra-thin Apple keyboards are a dream. I bought one, I used it for a week, and I promptly put it away because it was killing my hands.
As much as I loved the keypress feel/action, the layout, the engineering, and everything else about the keyboard, I just don't bend that way anymore.
Please give us an Ergonomic keyboard that's as spectacular and well-engineered as your other products? I'd really love to stop buying beige plastic third-party alternatives that only last 6 months.
    Please?

I use an MS keyboard which is more ergonomic, I still wish I had my Apple $150 that was designed for comfort, less stress, and larger hands. And got one of the last units. I just couldn't use the tiny keys the Mac Pro keyboard shipped with.

  • Bluetooth Ergonomic Keyboard

Is anyone aware of a Bluetooth ergonomic keyboard for sale? I have not been able to find one.
    Thanks!

    Hello mobile:
Define what "ergonomic" means to you. As far as I know, there is no standard definition. Hence, what is ergonomic to one manufacturer may not be to another (or to a user).

  • Microsoft ergonomic keyboard zooms instead of scrolls

I have a Microsoft ergonomic keyboard 4000. In Firefox 3.6, the zoom slider on the keyboard worked as a scroll wheel in Firefox. After upgrading to Firefox 4, the slider is back to the zoom function. I have tried several "hacks" and the slider acts as a scroll wheel in every program except FF.

Firefox 4 changed the window class from MozillaUIWindowClass to MozillaWindowClass.
    # In MS Windows kill the "itype.exe" process.
    # Open the command.xml file with your favorite editor as Administrator
    # Locate the UniqueName="MozillaWindowClass" AppName="Netscape" in the parent element "All". Mine was line 2967.
    # Change the KeySeq="ctrl add" and KeySeq="ctrl subtract" to KeySeq="pageup" and KeySeq="pagedown" respectively.
    # Start >> Run >> itype.exe
You can leave the everything else the same for backward compatibility.

  • Looking for a ergonomic keyboard for my iMac

I've used up (3) MS #4000 usb wired ergonomic keyboards since getting my Intel iMac 24".  I was a Mac to pc-user , but crossed back over in late 2006.  I had issues with the 4000 used with the pc and seem to use them up, getting only a year or so out of them before they go kaput.
Am looking for a wired or wireless model compatible with the iMac.  I just cannot get used to the regular keyboard again, I'm always hitting the wrong keys.  I hate to look down, rather look at the screen or other stuff; definitely not the keys.
    Any advice would be welcome.

Something here? These are all Mac compatible

  • Good ergonomic keyboard?

Can anyone recommend one that's Mac compatible? They seem hard to find -- or, in the case of Microsoft keyboards, they don't seem to have kept up with OSX. (The 4000 and 7000 keyboard specs say those work only for 10.1 through 10.3 or maybe 10.4.)

I have a Microsoft Natural Keyboard Elite from 2002(?) connected to my iMac and it works like a champ.
I like the shape and I like that it is a "white" keyboard with black letters as I look back and forth between the screen and the keyboard as I type.
I hate black keyboards with white letters as I can't read the letters when I move my eyes from the bright screen to the keyboard. So, I hate the new/latest MS keyboards.
It appears that MS still sells this keyboard. http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/mouseandkeyboard/ProductDetails.aspx?pid=022
I would look at Adesso keyboards: http://adesso.com/products.asp?categoryid=7&subcatid=56
Kensington and Logitech no longer seem to care about ergonomic keyboards.

  • Ergonomic keyboard

Why doesn't Apple offer an ergonomic keyboard?  So frustrating!

  • Still looking for ergonomic keyboard

Any news on a bluetooth ergonomic (split) keyboard from apple? Or at least one designed for the Mac? I love the feel of the standard Apple bluetooth keyboard, but it just kills my wrists.

    Hi John,
Stumbled on this, though it's not Bluetooth:

  • New Apple Keyboard requires 10.5.6?

I'm posting this here in the hope that someone has a new iMac with the new Apple Keyboard (sans numeric keypad) and another Mac running 10.4.11, and can try an experiment.
The new Apple Keyboard, sans number pad, is a great idea that I've been waiting for for almost 20 years. However, when I recommended it to a client (with a PowerBook G4 running 10.4.11), he came back and pointed out that it requires "Mac OS X v10.5.6 or later". Huh? It's just a keyboard, with a USB cable. Of course, it has the new set of F keys on the top row, but so do the Apple Keyboard with Numeric Keypad, which requires 10.4.1 (? - that's what the Apple Store page says, though I suspect it's a typo for 10.4.10) and the Apple Wireless Keyboard, which requires 10.4.10.
If someone could try the new Apple Keyboard with a Mac running 10.4.11 and see if and how it works, I'd very much like to hear the results. As I suspect would many others.

HI, I have the new keyboard and am still using Tiger (10.4.11). I found the function keys don't work as expected--the volume keys wouldn't work at all. I called Apple Care and they told me the new keyboards were designed for 10.5. For the volume keys I got something called "sizzlingkeysforiTunes" which works, although it opens iTunes. I was able to map a key for application windows, which is F13 on an extended one.
I was happy to be rid of the number pad since I use a pen tablet, but found I really really miss the home, end and pg up/pgdn keys. I use them constantly in Photoshop, and the command/control equivalents aren't working in Photoshop. I don't know if they'll work in Leopard, though.
So, I'm not so happy with it, but I like the size and lack of number pad.

  • Narrow Aluminum Keyboard Requirements

I went to buy the new narrow aluminum keyboard for my iMac (which has the white face), since I don't use the expanded area on the right....but upon looking at it in the Apple Store, on the box it listed the system requirements as the latest version of the system software, 10.5.6. My question is with my iMac running 10.4.11 will it work? Can I just download drivers and be OK, or am I just out of luck? Any answers, or links, would be appreciated.

Yeah, I guess maybe that page says 10.4.10 or higher because the expanded aluminum keyboard is shown there as well. If you click to buy the narrow one, it brings up this page that states 10.5.6 is required
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB869LL/A
I am just surprised that it looks like the latest OS is needed for a keyboard upgrade, or that Apple doesn't just make a download available to use it. I was ready to plunk down $50 for the keyboard I wanted, but I'm not going to spend $129 for the system upgrade right now, in addition to $50.
