Ergonomic USB keyboards

I have a frustrating situation: I have a Blade100 dual-booting on Solaris 8 & Solaris 9, and in both versions of the OS it rejects my standard ergo USB 1.1 keyboard and I have to plug in a Sun keyboard to even boot properly. This is a huge drag, needless to say, and I was wondering if anyone has had any luck with using ergonomic USB keyboards with Solaris, and if so, what brand of keyboard you're using?
Thanks!

Hi gstaylor16,
At some point, it started working. I kept checking the Lenovo updates via ThinkVantage Tools. One of the updates (I have a feeling it was the USB3 (NEC) drivers that did the trick, and not the BIOS. I apologize; I should have updated the thread.
For what it's worth, I have been using at T420 with Vista (32-bit) at work and it recognizes my 4000 without any issues.
If you can, I'd ensure the system is up-to-date on the various drivers, and Windows is updated as well. But again, if memory serves, it was an NEC driver that caught my eye, I updated, and it started working.
hope that helps. Sorry I'm not able to be more detailed/accurate.

  • Microsoft COMFORT ERGONOMIC USB Keyboard

Will just about any of the MS keyboards that are curved "splint" Ergonomic work on mac's?

Not any. You have to look for those that specifically support the Mac so they behave as a Mac keyboard, or which there are few. I liked the Logitech keyboard, but it only comes as a wireless unit with a mouse. I don't like wireless keyboards or mice and already have a Logitech mouse. Spending $90 to get a keyboard and throw away the mouse wasn't a good option.
Personally, I use the MS Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000. How much a person likes it depends mostly on how you like the keys to feel. The 4000 is a little soft, but I like it. There are pluses and minuses.
Pluses: The extra row of keys across the top are nice. I can launch the browser and mail with a single button instead of scouring the Dock. It has Back and Forward keys for your web browser. Nice since you can click on links with the mouse and use your other hand for going forward or back without having to keep moving to those buttons on screen with the mouse. It has five other keys on the top to go to any site you assign to them.
The software installs a kernel extension so the keyboard behaves the way you would expect Mac keys would. Though you can reassign many of them with the application it puts in the Applications folder. There are no replacement keys, so the key to the left of the space bar does act as a Command key, although it says Alt. The Option key is also where you would expect although it has the standard Windows Start key marking. The right side Option key insists on acting as the Application Switcher until you change it in a separate option in the keyboard application. Once you do that, it behaves the way you expect.
Minuses: They're minor, but may bug some. There's no Eject key for the CD/DVD drive. I reassigned the Play/Pause button to do that. No big deal to me as I don't even have iTunes installed, so never use the key for that anyway. There's four extra keys along the top right you can't assign anything to. I did contact Microsoft and asked them to make those keys accessible in the next release of the front end software. Who knows when, or if they'll do that. Zapping the PRAM, starting into Single User mode and Safe Boot mode all work normally as the extension for the keyboard is loaded before being checked by the Mac for those commands. Option booting is a little different. This happens before the extension is loaded. So if you hold down what would be the Option key on a Mac keyboard, nothing happens. You have to remember that the keyboard initially behaves as a Windows layout. Note that the Option key on most Macs is also marked Alt. So you instead hold down the Alt key (the one in the Command key position). Then it works.
It's a really nice keyboard to have for Intel based Macs. Works as a native keyboard no matter which OS you've booted into if you have Windows installed via Boot Camp. It's also pretty cheap. You can often find it on sale at CompUSA or Best Buy for $30.

  • Very slow USB keyboard and mouse when performing scp copy

    Hello,
As the title says, my Mac becomes very unresponsive when I copy large file via scp command. Keboard seems to read only a few letters than it "sleeps" acceptin a letter every ~2s, mouse moves "by hops" over the screen.
The scp seems to use available bandwith (~300kB/s), so seems ok. The CPU is 95% idle, so again seems OK. Disk is mostly idle.
    My system configuration:
    - Mac mini 5,1
    - Lion
    - USB keyboard + mouse (combo)
What else can I check to solve the problem? I need to use ssh/scp.
Update: Just when writing the post I got an idea to test Bluetooth keyboar+mouse. The result is that Bluetooth imput devices works without degradation, whilst at the same time the USB devices gets slow. I have tested the pendrive read/write and it is also affected by the SCP command. Any ideas why SCP over WiFi degrade USB operations? Is there any USB monitoring tool/command?
I do not want to stick with the crappy standard Bluetooth keyboard when I have a split ergonomic USB keyboard. Anyway, I was looking for a good ergonimic Bluetooth keyboard but was unsuccessful. However the exclusive, either scp either USB at a time, copy operation is also a hindrance.
    Thanks in advance!

Found the root cause of the problem - dying battery in my wireless keyboard. Why it degraded in operation under such condition, with SCP running, and not otherwise is a great mystery but a few days later it started to degrade all the time.

  • Looking for iMac compatible natural ergonomic split keyboard

    Hi,
Now that I have a new iMac, I really miss the ergonomic split keyboard from my pc. It is frustrating going back and making corrections for my poor typing skills on a standard keyboard.
I went to Made4Mac and found choices, but couldn't tell if any have at the very least, the same keys as the standard Apple board. If anyone out there has had the same frustrations with the standard keyboard and found a good split one, please reply, thanks!

"The split board that I was using on my pc does not have a usb cable only ps2."
There are ps2-to-USB adapters out there. This for example:

Looking for a full size USB keyboard for a Tecra A8 with keyboard layout more like desktop; del key next to \ and larger cap locks key farther away from A key. Other layout issues not a problem.

    Hello
You can use every keyboard. Go to a local computer dealer and have a look on the different keyboards.
There are keyboards with a lot of multimedia keys, normal keyboards, small, ergonomic keyboards and so far.
By the way I use Logitech keyboards for years and never had problems with it.

    Hi everyone,
hope someone can help me to solve my problem. I have a MPB13 retina late 2013 since something like 3 months. I have additional screen (dell), usb wired keyboard (apple) and BT magic mouse.
Since a few days, my usb keyboard does not work well. It only want to work properly when plugged to the rights side usb port internal port and not anymore on the left one. It also work on a usb external concentrator. Before, I had no problem, it worked perfectly. There was no problem such as cofee on it...
After searching the web on such problem, I tries a few things such as:
I tried the keyboard on another computer (windows): works fine
I tried usb stick and external DVD reading on the left internal usb ports: works fine
I switch the MPB off and turn it back on: the usb keyboard still does not work on the left usb port
I tried the SMC and PRAM reset : nothing
    Any idea ??
    Thanks

  • Apple USB keyboard does not work

I have the same problem as described by Sweboss on November 15th, 2012. The Apple USB keyboard is working perfectly, but if I shut down the computer, when I switch it on again, the USB keyboard does not respond, and the computer is looking for a Bluetooth keyboard (which I had before). I have tried switching off, unplugging all peripherals, then unplugging the computer, waiting 15 seconds, then plug it in, wait 5 seconds (this is a remedy proposed in other mails). Switch on and the USB keyboard does not respond. It is not that particular USB port, as it works perfectly well with other peripherals like my scanner, or printer, and changing ports does not help. And when I tried it last time, I had no other USB peripherals connected. Can anyone help?

That is definitely some strange behavior, good to finally be working, but does not explain exactly what causes the behavior.  Could have something to do with the energy saver part of the operating system, or a miscommunication with the USB bus itself.  With multiple USB ports it would be good to test on different ports to see if that is an issue.  Anyway, it is working now and that is good.
Another I don't know why but it works: a couple months ago a user was having problems with a wireless keyboard.  The keyboard-iMac communication resulted in random charaters, time lag, and other bad behavior.  The user finally found by accident that turning the keyboard off, removing the batteries, and then spending about five minutes just pressing keys, placing the palm of the hand on the keyboard and pressing, just pressing and pressing, and then replacing the batteries and turning on the keyboard, it worked fine.  Seems like it is necessary to just force the keyboard to discharge all of the key switches.  Those keyboards use capacitance switches instead of mechanical switches.  So they retain a charge.
While that was a wireless keyboard, I wonder if that was what happened in a way with your keyboard...the unplugging and leaving it for a period of time, any charge may have dissipated and it would work again.  If this happens again, try the above procedure and see if it helps.

  • MacBook Air 11-inch, Mid 2013 won't boot with external USB keyboard

    Hello,
    Just bought a MacBook Air 11-inch, Mid 2013 (8GB, i7, 512GB SSD) today.
All available software updates are installed (OS X 10.8.4 (12E3067)).
Also have a Macbook Pro Retina.
If I connect a external USB keyboard (Kinesis Advantage Pro USB) to the Air then it don't boots.
If the keyboard is connected directly to the Air USB port then it don't shows the Apple logo on grey background after power on, just give a endless loop of the turning on sound.
If the keyboard is connected to the Thunderbolt display then same empthy grey screen after power on and no sound at all.
The same keyboard and Thunderbolt display work well with my Macbook Pro Retina and a Macbook Air 2011.
    Any ideas ?
    Thanks,
    Karsten

I like it very much. I use it on my iPad (and occasionally my iPhone). I'm kind of a keyboard snob actually. I tried the Apple wireless keyboard first. Apple keyboards have a short throw that hurts the tips of my fingers. They're very pretty but the on button turns on when I don't want it to and my iPad wakes up in my bag. Strike 1.
I went to a little keyboard called the Joy and it had a positive switch so I didn't have the wakeup problem. It worked well though after several months I wore it out and had to replace it with another one. I also didn't like how flat it sat and used rubber bumpers on the back. It too had a short throw that hurt my finger tips after a while but it was better than the Apple.
Then I discovered the Logitech bluetooth keyboard, the K811. This is a great keyboard. It switches between multiple targets with one press, it has a positive on/off switch, the keys light up, it's rechargeable and lasts a long time, and the slight cushioning on the keys keeps my fingers from hurting. I put the rubber bumpers on it though like the Joy because I like the keyboard to sit up a little. It's a tiny bit bigger than the other keyboards but I like it a lot, better than my MBA keyboard and better than my iMac wired keyboard. I'm trying out an after market keyboard on the iMac now but I'm thinking about switching to one of these for the iMac.

  • No USB Keyboard or Mouse after 10.6.5 update

    This is strange.
Saw 10.6.5 update available in SWUpdate.
Before Downloading, restarted with Install DVD and did repair disk and permissions.
Cloned boot drive to firewire drive using Carbon Copy Cloner
Rebooted into 10.6.4 and did time machine backup.
    Downloaded 10.6.5 and installed.
Rebooted into 10.6.5 and no usb keyboard or mouse found.
Tried switching ports but no luck (all ports were on the mac, no hub involved)
rebooted using clone of 10.6.4 on firewire drive.
Keyboard and mouse found and working as normal.
Rebooted back into 10.6.5 and again no keyboard or mouse.
I did have bluetooth keyboard and mouse already setup but not powered on before undate. Turned them on and the Mac connected to both and they work ok.
Also noted that 10.6.5 does not see usb printer (Canon ip4000)
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

Just watching various posts on forums to see what I should do next. I updated to 10.6 from DVD, then went to 10.6.5, and my keyboard and mouse would stop working, and then start working again when I unplugged and replugged the keyboard (I have the mouse plugged into the keyboard). I don't want to spend all day unplugging and plugging my keyboard. I just went back to core 10.6 from the DVD, all my main software seems to work, so unless I have problems, I'm just sticking with core 10.6 until things get resolved.
I might try updating to 10.6.2, or 10.6.4, but not until I'm forced into it (when something is really not working on unstable). I do mostly music and video work. The only reason I updated was because something new I want to run (Wavelab 7) only works with 10.6. I usually never update my OS unless I'm forced into it, I'm way not an OS early adopter, I have work to do! I was truly expecting 10.6.5 to be OK, they've had plenty of time to get the kinks worked out. I wasn't expecting Apple to introduce new ones. Sounds like I'm not bothering with 10.6.6 now. 10.6.7 anyone? Do I hear .8?
    Way to go Apple.

  • I am using a USB keyboard and everytime I wake the iMac from sleep the keyboard will not respond unless I unplug and replug the keyboard. I am using a mid-2010 iMac with OSX 10.6. Any help would be appreciated.

I am currently using a USB keyboard (PC Model) and everytime I wake the computer from sleep the keyboard no longer responds unless I unplug and replug it. The USB mouse I am using works fine with no issues and I have already gone through the prompt to identify the keyboard in the settings. If anyone know of a setting I can use to permenantly enable the keyboard so I no longer have to unplug and replug it that would be appreciated.
    Thank you.

Your 2010 MBP would be able to handle Yosemite, but I would strongly suggest that you get the current problem sorted out before trying to upgrade to Yosemite. I'd also recommend another backup that isn't created by Time Machine if you are thinking of upgrading. SuperDuper and CarbonCopyCloner can make bootable clones of hard drives. If you clone your existing system to a fresh external drive, you would be able to boot from that drive and recover quickly in the event that your Yosemite upgrade didn't work out. Time Machine backups are not 100% reliable.
It's possible that, if your internal HD is the one that shipped with your MBP in 2010, it may be failing. If it keeps needing repairs, that is probably a sign that it is approaching the end of its useful life.
Have you run Disk Utility's Repair tool on the external drive as well?
I mentioned the hub because some people have reported here that attaching their USB 3 drives through a USB 2 hub solved some disconnection problems. A good-quality powered USB 2 hub won't cost much.
My most recent brush with random disconnections involved a nice new OWC drive enclosure. I used the cable that came with the drive, but the drive kept disconnecting. Using a different cable solved the problem. You wouldn't expect that what appeared to be a high quality cable would be a problem straight out of the box, but it was.

G5 dual 2ghz.  Been unplugged for a while. Powers up but no video or power to usb keyboard.  Boots up fine in safe mode, restart into normal mode ok. After shutdown, back to same issue.  What's happening?

I keep seeing people ask and the advice to replace if it has been unplugged, but really have nothing to confirm that from my experiences.
My experience is that a weak or dead battery can cause much more than date and time issues.
I have seen it time and time again.
Deal with used machines and you will quickly learn....
I'll give no "recipe" or set list of symptoms, but the range of irregularities that can occur make it a quick and easy first line of troubleshooting, especially when the machine has been off the mains for a few months.
Why fight mysterious maladies and troubleshoot with the knowledge that the PRAM battery is beyond it's useful life.
    Maybe they recharge?
Not likely. They are chemically nasty, disposable, one way discharge batteries.
    They aren't Lithium-ion batteries

  • Is there a way to use an adapter to connect my ipad to a USB keyboard and to an ACDC for power

I have a tablet keyboard with a male USB plug attached to it and it came with an adapter with a female USB on one end and a mini male USB on the other end. I was wondering if there is a way to use that keyboard with my iPad and iPod? There are adapters that plug into laptops and pc's that you can plug keyboards and mice into. Will it work if I plug the iPod or iPad  into one and the keyboard into one and then plug one into the ACDC power adapter (since I am sure the keyboard will drain the battery quicker). I am so tired of the iPad keyboard always hiding what I am trying to type.

As far as I know, there isn't any support for USB keyboards. THe iPad is designed to work with blue tooth ones.
That power issue that you state is why it likley won't work. An update in 2011 reduced the amount of power allocated to the charging port and I don't think it's capable of outputting enough to run a keyboard.

  • Want Mac mini and G4 to share Display and USB keyboard and mouse

I bought a KVM switch at a local electronics store. I got the only one that claimed Mac compatibility (PPA Int'l). I can't plug the switch into the G4 Cube. No such ports. With the adapter that accompanied my brand new Mac Mini, I can plug the KVM monitor port into the mini's monitor port, BUT that port is currently being used by the Apple DVI-to-ADC adapter I bought so I can connect my Cinema Display to the Mac mini.
The KVM switch wants 3 ports on each computer: a VGA (monitor) port, the keyboard port, and the mouse port; but the keyboard/mouse connectors are not USB.
As things stand--without the switch--I can shut down whatever computer I'm working on (mini or Cube), unplug the display from one, connect it to the other, power up and everything's fine. I suppose the only advantage with the KVM switch is being able to power off, switch, then power on without having to move the display plug.
My QUESTION is, does anybody manufacture a KVM switch I can use between two Macintosh computers to share use of my USB keyboard powered from a USB port on the display, and my USB mouse powered from a USB port on the keyboard?
Or is the answer NOT to go for the convenience of a KVM switch?
Does it matter that the mini OS is Leopard, and the Cube OS is Tiger?
I am heartily impressed with the mini. Setup was over in 5 minutes, and I must say it's fast. Appreciate any help from the experts. --Spot

I had the same problem, and finally came up with two other alternative solutions.
First, if you have a recent LCD monitor, it is fairly simple and cheap. The Mini has a digital connection for the monitor. My G4 400 MHz has both digital and analog connections. I have a Samsung 19 inch widescreen monitor that has both a digital and an analog input. I connected the G4 to the monitor using the analog input with my old cable, and connected the Mini using the digital input. The Samsung has a switch that will use either the digital or analog input - very easy.
Now the keyboard and mouse. I got a 6 foot USB cable with the A plug on one end and B plug on the other, plugged the A plug end into the G4, and ran the cable with the B plug up near the Mini. It helps to keep it close. You already have the keyboard/mouse plugged into the Mini. You simply unplug the keyboard cable from the Mini, and plug it into the B plug from the G4. Switch the monitor from digital to analog, and you have the G4 (remember to start it up). Once you have run the cables, it takes about 10 seconds to make the switch.
Second, and I use both ways, is to get an inexpensive wired router. I bought a Belkin 4 port router (about $30, I think), got a couple Cat 5 cables, hooked both the Mini and G4 up to the router, along with my internet connection, and have both computers available on one monitor with no physical switching involved. You will need to go to System Preferences/Sharing and turn on Personal File Sharing (there may be another change, but I can't remember it right now).
When all is hooked up, you go to GO in the Finder Menu Bar (make sure the G4 is booted before doing this) click on either NETWORK or CONNECT TO SERVER, find your G4 and connect. It may be confusing the first few times, but it works great because you have access to both computers at once, along with your internet connection - the best of both worlds!
I did this in January of this year, so please forgive me if I have forgotten a step somewhere. Ask me and I'll be glad to try to walk you through it. The first solution is the simplest to do, and the second in the most versatile. It's your choice.
Hope this helps. Just don't be intimidated by it - if I can figure it out, we can get you connected. Good luck!
