Erratic battery

My iBook battery sometimes works normally, for a few hours, and sometimes (quite often, actually), will suddenly drop from about 90% to about 3% and go to sleep, in a question of minutes. Any ideas about what to do about this erratic behavior?
Thanks!

Hi PeterR,
I'm having the same problem too. My iBook battery goes to 0% - 3% when it reaches around 45% battery life. By using coconutBattery, I'd found out that my battery capacity drops 6% after every load cycle too after I'd tested by draining the all the power.
As recommended by many here, I'd reset the PMU, but nothing changed.
PeterR, mind do I ask when this starts to occur? Mine started after I'd update to 10.4.4. Though it seems very unsual for the update to cause such problem? But I'd ran out of idea. I recommend you to checkout your battery life using coconutBattery - www.coconut-flavour.com/coconutbattery/.
If it is a fault in the battery, then I wont be worrying too much. Worst come to worst, I'll jst get a new battery. But what if my iBook causes this problem, then my new battery will end up with the same fate.

  • Erratic battery behaviour on Macbook air since latest update

My Macbook Air 11.1 is from 2011, and the battery started going bad last year. I ordered and placed a new battery in january. This worked perfectly, no problems whatsoever. This morning, I installed the latest available Apple update (unsure which one, can't find it). After that, my battery has been behaving strangely. This is what happened:
    - I unplugged my laptop at one point, and moved it from my bed to desk. I went to my kitchen, returned, and the laptop had turned off.
    - I put the charger in and turned it back on. I realised the battery info said the battery isn't charging and 'replace now'. Surprised, since I just got the battery this january.
    - All of a sudden, the icon changed to white (it's black when not charging) and it was charging again.
    - This kept happening, on and off.
    - Unplugging the charger results in shutting of immediately or within a few seconds. At this moment, it's charging (at 97%). But it can change any minute.
    - I tried moving my laptop around a bit, tilting it up and down, but that doesn't seem to do anything (neither good or bad).
I looked on the internet for a few solutions:
    - Resetting PRAM: no differene
    - Resetting SMC: no difference
    - Reinstalling Yosemite completely (do you recommend this? In any specific order?)
Does anyone know what is best to try? I can also open up my laptop again and check the battery, but I doubt that's the problem. Btw, third party apps like battery diag/battery health/coconut battery all make no mention of the battery needing to be replaced.
Any help is greatly appreciated. I'm emigrating to Serbia next week, so I hope to fix it before then
    I included an Etrecheck report:

    Hi Dominic,
Thank you for your help! I did all three things and run etrecheck again. It now shows the following, different things seem to be failing now? Like Kerberos?

  • Erratic battery on iPhone 5

I've being experiencing erratic battery behavior since before installing ios7 but it got worst since.
Basically the battery charge drops dramatically (this morning: from 50% to 0 when the phone stopped completely and shut down, in the space of 20 minutes, without me doing anything special) only to be told once I plug the iPhone to electricity that the battery is at 35% of its battery charge.
Any ideas? Anyone have the same problem?

I'm having the same issue, but only since installing ios7.  It's gotten worse today.
I was fully charged at 1:30p, listened to music until 3:30, and went to 85%.
Put it in standby, and by 5pm had gone down to 45%.
    By 9pm, I was down to 30%.
Within a few minutes after 9pm, I got a 20% power warning, and the phone immediately shut down.  When I tried turning it back on, it said I had to plug it into a power source.
After 10 minutes shut down without charging, I turned it back on, and it said 30% power, then immediately went to 1% and shut down again.
After a few minutes, again, I turned it back on, and it was at 30%.
After 5 minutes, it was at 19%.  It went down 1% every few minutes until it got to 8% and shut down again.
I turned it back on at about 10:10pm and it was at 21%.  By 10:50 it was down to 13%.
What in the **** is happening?

  • Erratic Battery Behavior after 2.0 Update

Ever since my I updated to the 2.0 firmware my battery life is horrible. I have a nearly full charge and put my ipod to sleep at the end of the day. I get up the next morning and the battery is so drained the ipod won't start up until I plug it into a computer. what gives? Do I have a defective battery? I just got this thing in May. It shouldn't be having a problem like this. I want to take it to a genius bar but I'm afraid they're just going to tell me the battery issue is from wear and tear. I do have apple care on this.
    anyone else having this problem?

No, it`s really simple, hold your finger on an icon for a few seconds before they start to wriggle, and hit Delete, or "X" i`m not sure.

  • No more 'full charge' icon and erratic battery behaviour

    I have a 40g 3G, thirteen months old, and it's going nuts.
Two weeks ago it stopped showing the 'full charge' icon when charging, it just goes on and on and on, either with AC or Firewire. The meter in the screen is numerical, and it never goes over 500. This means about five hours continuous play, unless I need to fiddle with the songs: the moment the hard drive spins again, the meter loses some 100 volts, picking them up again in a few seconds. Trouble is, when the meter goes under 200 the iPod screen shows the 'no battery power left' on the screen (not the icon, the message), then goes dead.
I tried resetting a million times, I even restored it. No use. I left it for a week to kill the battery off, but it just doesn't really ever die! The moment I click, the Apple logo comes out, but the moment the HD starts spinning, it all dies.
I went on doing this for days... please tell me I'm the one going nuts.

  • Erratic battery indicator "time remaining"

This little Mac has always had battery problems. When it was hers, my daughter went through 2 batteries. Now that it's come home to me, I figured I'd lick the problem once and for all. So I bought a NewerTech battery.
It lasts longer (previous battery would die after just a few minutes). But it (still) displays erroneous info. It often lapses into "calculating… remaining." And even when it shows the time, it's usually wacky. Like "254.15"… then "75.35"… then "3.54" — just all over the place.
The OS is a complete reinstall since I got it back from my daughter. I've done the PMU reset (multiple times) and the PRAM reset… and even deleted the powermangement .plist file. Nothing has solved this issue.
    coconutBattery says…
    original capacity: 4400 mAh
current capacity: 4200 mAh (I didn't run it the first day, but this battery has only been in this Mac for two days)
    battery loadcycles: 0
If I pull down the battery menu several times (even in quick succession), the reading is different every time First time, time remaining: "130.42"; second time, time remaining "4.20"; third time, "calculating…"; fourth time, "17.30", etc.
I'd sure love some advice on what to try next. Thanks.

If your "time remaining" is showing erronious numbers and you have already reset the PMU and PRAM you may have to " Recalibrate" the battery.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86284
If that does not help you will probably need to take it in for service considering you have had issues with a few batteries.

  • GS60 Pro - Erratic battery behavior

My GS60 Ghost Pro has a strange battery behavior since I got it earlier this week.
As an example, I did a powercfg -batteryreport and got something like this:
    16:23:34   Active    AC    98 %    53,291 mWh
    16:32:36   Active    Battery    98 %    53,280 mWh
    16:34:44   Active    AC    98 %    53,280 mWh
    17:05:58   Active    Battery    98 %    53,280 mWh
    17:06:04   Active    AC    98 %    53,280 mWh
    17:09:11   Active    Battery    98 %    53,280 mWh
    17:09:17   Active    AC    98 %    53,280 mWh
    17:18:27   Active    Battery    98 %    53,280 mWh
    17:18:33   Active    AC    98 %    53,280 mWh
As you can see, it switches between AC and Battery by itself while being plugged in. It happens randomly. Other times charge goes to -1 mWh:
    20:52:40   Active    AC    100 %    53,860 mWh
    21:19:44   Active    Battery    -   -1 mWh
    21:19:47   Active    AC    100 %    53,860 mWh
    21:34:49   Active    Battery    -   -1 mWh
    21:34:52   Active    AC    100 %    53,860 mWh
I have also managed to get a "Battery not detected" message while the laptop was not even plugged. Powercfg reported:
     Installed batteries
Information about each currently installed battery
    No batteries are currently installed
Again, the laptop was running from the battery when getting this message.
I have tried to do an EC reset and to run the MSI battery calibration tool, but this has not fixed the issue.
Is there anything else I can try? Or is the battery defective and I should contact MSI already?

No, it`s really simple, hold your finger on an icon for a few seconds before they start to wriggle, and hit Delete, or "X" i`m not sure.

  • Erratic Battery - Itunes won't restore (Iphone 5)

    Hello,
I'd appreciate some really urgent here as I'm at the end of my tether.  In the last couple of days my phone has had charging issues - either it would stay on the same percentage then cut out or it wouldn't charge at all.  Earlier this evening, despite a full day of charging, it was sitting at 3% and then kept cutting out and turning itself back on.  After looking online it seemed that the sensible idea would be to restore to its factory settings to see if that would fix the problem.  Here is where the frustrations really kicked in ...
I was all set to restore but itunes first has to download software which takes over an hour.  The first time it downloaded, there was an unkown error and I had to restart.  There was then another hour (to download the same software?), once this finished, nothing happened.  The iphone still has the static USB screen where it asks you to connect to itunes, and itunes (despite detecting the iphone) just didn't do anything.  It then restarted the downloading software process which will take another hour.  This whole time I've had no access to my phone.  I'm travelling 5 hours to get home for christmas tomorrow and need a phone to complete the journey as I'm being picked up.  I have no idea how to sort this!?  Anyone?
    Thanks,
    Jason

Okay, now went through another hour of it downloading and again it didn't apply the update to continue with the restore.  It allows me to press restore again, I press it and it begings updating the software (hence taking another hour).  This is absolutely insane that my phone should be locked like this with a download that takes over an hour each time and then doesn't work.  Is there anyone who can help?

  • Lion Battery Management Software seems to be erratic.

The Lion OS X 10.7.2 battery management software appears to be very erratic.
I just brought a new MacBook Pro direct from Apple last week (late 2011, 15", 2.4 GHz, 8 GB 1333 Mhz DDR3, 7500 rpm disc) with Lion OS X 10.7.2 preinstalled, i.e., the latest and greatest. I was only getting 3 hours on a battery charge until it ran out. After searching the forums nothing quite matched (older models, different graphic cards, more constrained systems, Lion software upgrades, etc).
I have the screen brightness set to about 50%, the power option "put disks to sleep whenever possible", and the keyboard set to turn off the light after 30 seconds of non-use. On battery, I have "display sleep" at 6 minutes and "computer sleep" set to 10 minutes. So I am not pushing the power consumption very hard.
I ran a "repair" from the recovery partition and my hard disk had no problems.
So I tried the Reset Power Manager metioned in another thread:
    Shutdown
    Depress Ctrl+Option+Shift
    Power on
Hold for at least 10 seconds
    Power on
and that extended my battery charge to 6 hours, not quite the 7 hours advertised. (I even tried it on my mid 2009 Mac Book Pro 13", Snow Leopard OS X 10.6.8 and its battery life was extended by about .67%).
But I started seeing odd reporting in the "time remaining" in the battery icon. The "time remaining" would fluctuate by as much as 20% in a just a few seconds, going either up or down! For example, it would jump from 4 hours to 3 hours, then up to 3.5 hours then up to 4.5 hours, down to 1.3 hours, and back up to 4.0, and so forth whenever I changed the state.
So I watched the "battery charge remaining" over several hours with different states:  (WIFI on/off, start/stop applications, turn Thunderbird/Firefox to offline and back to online; Thunderbird is not an issue because I have it set to check for incoming messages every 2 hours not every few minutes) and I monitored using the Activity Monitor and the widget iStat Pro. The cpu was reported to never exceed 2% busy, user+system, and free memory never fell below 5.9 GB with minimwl swapping and paging, i.e. the machine was basically idle even when I had WIFI on with Firefox watching Adobe Flash video from the net, which is purportedly a CPU hog (it is not).
Has anyone else seen this erratic battery software managemt behavior? Does any have an explanation?

I noticed in some archived threads that someone suggested changing "time" to "percentage" because "time" remaining is calculated every few seconds and is very sensitive to changes of state as I noted in my post. I don't see that "solution" as much use because it doesn't tell me "percentage" of what? The amount of charge left? What I really what to know is "how long will my charge last?". 70% of 3 hours is something quite different than 70% of 7 hours. It seems to me that the time remaining ought to be calculated less often. The value is reported in hh:mm. I don't see much point in calculating it every few seconds. Once a minute would actually be more accurate.

  • MacBook Pro - Battery behaving very strangely

I have noticed there are already many threads on this, couldn't decide which one to post in so am starting a new one.
I have a MBP 2.33 C2D 17" from late 2006. Last year I experienced the 'expanding battery' problem, my battery totally warped out of shape and was not working properly. After a fair bit of trouble with Apple France (who basically said, too bad, buy a new one), I eventually was able to go above their heads and get Apple to send me a free replacement. This seemed fair seeing as I had bought my MBP within the timeframe of an official battery recall published on the Apple site. The new battery worked absolutely fine, and is now still less than a year old.
Recently though, it has started to behave very strangely. I hadn't made any connection that it could be to do with having upgraded to Snow Leopard, but in retrospect, after reading many of the threads here, it does seem likely that this is the case.. I recently did a big upgrade from Tiger to SL on this very machine, and it has been since then that I've had very erratic battery behaviour.
My symptoms are similar to many I've read here: The remaining battery time (when not connected to AC) will jump from say 3 hours down to 15 mins very suddenly. Then sometimes it will jump back up again. Sometimes my battery health condition will say 'replace now', other times 'replace soon' or other times 'normal'. Also, sometimes the machine will just go to sleep with no warning, even when it had estimated more than an hour of battery time left.. upon reconnection to AC, suddenly it says 0%.
I have always been careful to power cycle the battery properly, to let it run down regularly. Also since noticing this problem, the first thing I tried to do was recalibrate.. But I've tried twice now with no success. I let the machine run right down till it went to sleep, then left it on overnight, waiting for the power LED to stop flashing on the front of the machine.. But it wouldn't stop flashing even after being left off overnight. I have yet to try an SMC reset, will do that next.
I realize my battery is not brand new, nor is my computer. However, this was a replacement battery I received less than a year ago. I'll put the battery stats below, but I'm not sure I believe them because I've been checking what is says a lot recently and sometimes it even shows a full charge capacity of a negative number! Something strange is going on here. I obviously don't expect full performance from a battery nearly a year old, but what it's doing here seems to be more than just a case of a battery getting old, especially having seen that many other users are having a similar set of symptoms after going to Snow Leopard.

    Cheers.

I just got off a call with Apple support. The tech agreed that my symptoms were not normal, even for a battery with a cycle count over 300 like mine.. especially with the fact that the system profiler is showing bizarre info that makes no sense such as a full charge of a negative number. He said that basically the only thing I can try is to do an archive and reinstall of Snow Leopard, since it seems that the operating system is possibly corrupted. I don't think it's anything to do with the physics of the battery, it is more likely that the OS is not interacting properly with the battery, thus giving false and conflicting readings and information.. He seemed quite certain that it can't be a problem with Snow Leopard itself, seeing as all of the laptops in the Apple Support office were on SL and did not have this problem. So in his opinion, a corrupted OS was the most likely explanation. In any case, he said that batteries are only covered by a 90 day guarantee, so if it turns out that after a reinstall, my problem doesn't go away, then I'll have no choice but to buy a new battery because they won't cover it... This doesn't seem very fair to me because if it turns out that the OS has nothing to do with it, then it must be a faulty battery, because this kind of behaviour is certainly not what I'd call acceptable for a battery of less than a year old.
Anyway, I'll perhaps try the archive and install process on the weekend and see what happens.

  • Erratic counter trigger from battery powered ttl source

I am using a new Monarch optical tachometer with TTL output to drive e-series counters. Using a function generator or other TTL conditioner it works fine. However, using the Monarch, either battery or plugged into line power, I get very erratic frequency readings and frequently a -200140 error. I am on a pcmcia 6036e and pxi-6052. Using LV7.1 daqmx measure digital frequency 1-counter. The analog observation of the TTL pulses shows slightly different min-max levels and pulse width, but no smoking gun. Any ideas?

    Jim,
What gate frequency are you using in your example?
Depending on the frequency you are using, you could have a synchronization error. This refers to the measurement variation due to the gate and source edge not being synchronized. In the example you mentioned, you should be using a 20MHz timebase, where each source cycle lasts 50ns. If the gate frequency you are using is of 50KHz, the number of 50ns periods that occur during one cycle of a 50KHz signal is 400 +/-1, which yields a frequency measurement of between 49.88 and 50.13KHz. On the other hand, if the gate frequency you are using is of 5MHz, then the number of 50ns periods that occur during one cycle of a 50MHz signal is 4+/-1, which yields a frequency measurement between 4 and 6.67MH
    z.
Again, the reason why you might be getting very erratic readings could be because of the frequency that you are outputting from the optical tachometer into the gate of your board.
Please let me know if this helped. Thanks!

  • Mid 2012 Macbook air battery charging erratically

A few days ago, I noticed that my macbook air was not charging even though it was plugged to the power adapter. After some time, it showed that it was charging, but infinitely slowly. I did SMC reset and after a while, it was charging normally. But the problem reappeared some time later. Some times SMC reset seems to help, some times it does not. Some times it says that the battery is charged, while the battery percentage is showing less than 100. Also, the connecter light is also not synchronous with the battery state sometimes.
I had changed the battery a couple of months ago. The power adapter is also new. Also, I some times hear a very low buzz sound coming from the connector of the adapter.

Assuming you have the tools required (two different screw drivers and a plastic tool to lift the connector from the logic board) you will save about $30. If you don't have, or don't have access to the tools you'll save almost nothing. However, depending on your source you may wind up with a counterfeit Apple battery, a used battery, or a battery that may or may not be truly Apple compatible. Take it to an Apple Store.

  • Battery level is erratic

Hi. I had a dud battery which was replaced by Apple at the end of January. Now after about two months usage the battery level has gone crazy!
I have the following information from Coconut Battery.
    19th January (New battery) - 100%
    28th February - 91%
    Then 8th March - 58%
    Then 9th March, I have had the following readings in this order - 60%, 77%, 91%, 73%.
I thought that maybe the battery needed calibrated and so I tried this but it did not work in correcting the problem. I have tried resetting the SMC and this has not worked in getting the battery level to be correct.
I have been trying to use this battery properly and so have been fully charging the battery and then taking it off AC power and using it on battery power till the running on backup power warning appears. Thus I have worked up 66 charge cycles.
Is there anything I can try? Or have I damaged the battery? Or do I have another dud battery?!

Hi Andrew: Have you checked the battery information from within System Profiler? There may be issues with Coconut Battery. Also I believe you are doing the worse possible thing for your battery by continually discharging it. Please see the info from Kappy in the following post.

  • Erratic "Low Battery Power" shut-offs

My I-Pod Mini is less than a year old and has developed a very annoying problem. Even with a full charge the unit will flash the "Low Battery Power" warning and then shut off. On some occassions the unit will turn back on within a few minutes and then play for a few hours. On other occassions the unit will not play at all. In the latter circumstance, I charge the I-Pod, but the icon will show that the battery is fully charged. It is then 50-50 as to whether it will play.
To make matters more frustrating I sent my mini to Apple for service and got it back (completely erased) with a letter saying it operated within acceptable limits. So, now I have a mini that does not work well, and I am out shipping expenses - that doesn't seem right!
    Does anyone have any suggestions?

    This sounds like my problem.

  • Battery life erratic

I got my new MacBook Pro on Friday had a five minute play out the box and then plugged it in. After letting it fully charge I thought I would check the battery life.
The battery life is great, it's just the battery counter jumps up and down sometimes as much as two hours while still doing the same thing and on the same page.
It is only just off its second charge and I am just wondering if Leopard's battery counter is a little more jumpy? I have just come from Tiger on a Powerbook where the remaining time was very consistent or do I need to let the battery settle/calibrate it a bit more?

I have calibrated the battery by running it down, leaving it overnight and then charging it until full and then some. After unplugging it I'm still getting the same annoying readout as before 10 hours, no 8 hours, then 5 and then back up to 8 hours etc.
Is this normal? All I'm doing is surfing the web - how can I possibly lose two hours just by scrolling a page for it to then go back up? What I'm wondering is, if Leopard's battery reading is like this, as Tiger's was pretty stable and would only go down when you were doing something intensive etc.
Any advice as this is really annoying now
