Erratic Charging

This has probably been posted before but my iBook seems to be playing games with my chargers. With the one I got with the computer the light flashes between green and orange and the computer's battery monitor thingy goes from "calculating" to battery and back to calculating. After an hour or so of this the computer will put its self to sleep because of a drained battery. Also the time it says it will take to charge (when it does decide to charge) increases instead of decreacing. I switched to a 'flying saucer' iBook G3 charger and got exactly the same thing although both chargers work on another iBook G4 and my iBook G3.
Any ideas as to whats up?

Hi & Welcome. As mrpetey says, the first thing to try is:
RESET PMU
1. If the computer is on, turn it off.
2. Reset the power manager by simultaneously pressing and then releasing Shift-Control-Option-Power on the keyboard. Do not press the fn (Function) key while using this combination of keystrokes.
3. Wait 5 seconds.
4. Press the Power button to restart the iBook
Good luck.

  • Erratic charger Behavior

Hi your help is greatly appreciated.
my macbook is 6 months old and and i am having having problems with erratic charger behavior. It varies depending on screen fluctuations and automatically switches off while switching to different applications on screen, or on switching on or turning off the computer. I am having to switch off and switch on power adaptor many times before i get my mac book charged. Battery has completed 60 cycles so far. Please help. Thanks

The 1.3 update is the MacBook Pro update. You need to remove it before you can find out if anything else might be wrong. Leopard installs it.
Try these two locations for it. It will be one or the other.
    MacBook/Library/System/Library/SystemConfiguration/BatteryUpdater.bundle
    MacBook/System/Library/SystemConfiguration/BatteryUpdater.bundle
Drag it to the trash and then reboot. After you reboot you will be able to empty the trash. Once you have done that run software update and it should install Battery Update 1.2. You should reset the SMC (System Management Controller) after doing this.
Then watch your battery and see if any of the things continue to happen.

  • Erratic charging, No full charge.

Possible warning to always use surge protection?
While running my PB off an automotive inverter and then repeatedly trying to start a vehicle. (causing the inverter to go into low voltage alarm) A week or so ago also dropped it and bent the case, making the plug not fit well and not always making full contact, It would show green when discharged and requiring a little extra push to go orange and start charging.
Replaced my battery and got a new 65w charger a couple years ago. Still barely got 2 hours use of it on the battery and prior to now barely 1 1/2 hours which might be normal for the age of it. Now maybe a 1/2 hour starting from an indicated full charge.
Now plugging it shows green and occasionally flashing orange briefly while in use, (usually only for a minute or two and tpically only for 15-30 seconds) charge rate is slower than normal, power indicator shows as charging, but isn't.
Installing the plug incomplete has the adapter showing charge orange but the charge indicator shows as on battery power and quickly shows a discharge state.
I put the unit to sleep with 45% charge and woke it up 8 hours later with the same state and it typically appears to stay at what ever charge it was at when put to sleep and not be charging unless in use.
The adapter light usually flashes orange for maybe a minute at a time when in use and gradually shows an increasing state of charge while in orange. Though sometimes still shows an increasing state of charge despite not changing to orange or not always going up immediately when it's actually showing orange charging.
When the hard drive is spinning up and other use also has the adapter light showing charge and charge state stays the same when showing green, so it appears I'm only charging for brief times. It might start showing an orange charge when the screen saver kicks in and for about 15-30 seconds when closing the lid.
When it eventually gets to an indicated full charge it turns out I only have a 20-30 minutes of use and typical shutting down despite showing indications of over 50% capacity.
Reset the PMU and restated, ran the utility, Figuring if it still works resetting should make it work properly, but it not making any difference. My cd/dvd drive also failed, so I can't run the hardware test.
Any clues as to what the problem is, Requiring replacement of part or all the charging circuit components?
I also developed hard drive noises after dropping it a few weeks ago, but this charging problem didn't started till my vehicle starting problem.

Looking in posts for different size units, others seem to have encountered similar problems.
It looks like it could be a battery problem, though in my case I'm still getting about a 1/2 hour out of it (but was getting 1 1/2 hours out of it) and it acting the battery is at the end of it's life on top of the odd orange green light function etc,
The charging problem also possibly tied to something in the PMU or logic board, or charger itself that is either damaged or worn out and the problems with incorrect battery capacity etc appears not exclusive to old units or OS's and being a bit erratic and not showing up in the hardware test. (of which I can't run due to my disc drive also not working anymore)
When I first had problems with my old battery everything went back to normal with a new battery and charger. So I'll blame it on built in defects, globalization and profit margins.
I bought a new 65w charger thinking I might get better life out of the new battery, but it didn't. (and despite extended applecare supposedly my old battery was at it's expected performance level and not replaceable for free, and the place I had it tested at claimed to get better life out it than I ever could, but was likely using newer charger)
My old 45w charger also had a frayed cord where it entered the plug and wasn't maintaining a good connection and I was getting tired of fixing it as well figuring my problems might be tied to running off inverters and a not very good plug in power source when plugged in, not getting full line voltage.
My current problem started with dropping it and it not making a good connection unless forcing it in more and later developing into erratic and incorrect charging after a few power surges. But because it still appears to work, I figured it could be a software problem, but didn't fix itself running the disc utility or restarting.
I've yet to try running the battery down again, because it appears to take so long to recharge and only recharges while using it.
Even sleeping for a 3-4 hours on the battery runs it down to 80% where it used to only lose a few points. Seeing it shut down at 60% last time, likely means I don't have very much use on the battery now and my power indicator is optimistic.

  • Erratic Charger Behavior - Indicator light (thus charger) work sporadically

On my 18 mo. old Macbook, the charger (or perhaps the battery) is acting erratically in that when connected, the light often will not come on. Sometimes it works instantly, other times you have to snap it on & off 1-20x, or just wait for a while & repeat the above. Occasionally, it will illuminate for just a short period, then turn off. It likely will continue to get worse. Is this symptomatic of the defective batteries on the recall, or is this a charger problem, or something in the computer? I've checked the firmware on battery; it's 1.3, presumably the latest. All software updates have been installed as well.
Further, I've noticed that when the charge goes to about 40%, the machine just shuts off. No warning, just powers down, w/ subsequent loss of unsaved data. This may or may not be related.
Thx for the replies w/ diagnosis!

  • Zen Micro erratic charging behavi

My brand new Zen Micro shows erratic behaviour when charging. It will automatically shut off when a fully charged state is reached only if you are recharging the battery from a heavily discharged state. If you are recharging the battery from a lesser discharged state eg. after say -2 hours of use, then the unit will not automatically shut off when full charge is reached...you have to manually disconnect it from the mains charger and when you attempt to recharge it again immediately the fully charged plug icon appears as you would expect.
The other strange anomaly is that if you use the unit for 30-40 minutes after a full charge and then attempt to top up the charge, it will not allow you to do so since it thinks that the unit is still fully charged.
I upgraded to latest firmware (.0.02) from .0.03 but this has had no effect. I was wondering if anyone else has had similar problems. I also have a Zen Touch 20GB which does not show this strange charging behaviour.

Firstly the .0.02 firmware has a discharge bug in it, at least for some people. I would recommend going back to the .02.05 firmware which you can get at (the .0.02 version was pulled).
Secondly, I have exactly the same problem. There is definitely a charging bug (that I've seen in several earlier Creative players also) where the player gets to a certain charge state and then locks up or freezes in the charging. For my Micro it gets to close to a full charge and then the flashing charge just sticks permanently on. I can disconnect the player and turn it on (if I remember correctly) so it isn't locked up, and then continue charging.

  • Erratic charging on iBook Dual USB

I just bought a used 500MHz Dual USB (2001) for use in some testing and to do very basic stuff like word processing. I have several old and new Apple computers.
In any case, the thing arrived today with a discharged battery. I wasn't surprised because it's surplus from a school. I plugged in the charger, the light went green and I turned it on. It didn't start. I took the connector that plugs into the unit and was getting ready to pull it out, but in the process the light went from green to amber. When amber, I tried to turn the unit on, and it came on. I wiggled the connector and could make it change colors from a dark amber, to a lighter amber, to green. If it shows green, it really acts as if it's disconnected. I thought that this probably just a bad charger so I took one off another 500MHz iBook I have that I know works and plugged it in and had the same problem.
I put the old charger back in this unit, wiggled it around until it went the lighter of the two amber colors, turned on the computer, let it boot up, and verified that it was charging. I shut the unit down, let it sit untouched for about 4 hours until the light went from amber to green and the battery was showing a full charge. It did this successfully.
It appears to me that there is some type of fault with the jack for the charger built into the iBook. Can this be replaced? I'm figuring I need to open the unit up and solder a new jack in place. Does anyone know what type of connector this is called and where I can order one?
    Thanks.

  • Can adapter cause erratic charging behavior?

For months, my 15" aluminum G4 Powerbook, which otherwise works fine, started slowly losing its charge--went down to 92%, 80%, sometimes 70%, then started recharging, apparently by itself. Also, the light often showed orange at 100 or 99% and sometimes turned green when it was going down. However, the battery appears to work normally when used without the adapter.
I called Apple and was told to reset the PMU and zap the PRAM, which helped. I then bought a new Macbook, and as soon as Apple had transferred my data from the PB to the Macbook, the weird behavior suddenly disappeared.
In the last couple of days, though, it's started again--battery apparently draining for no reason, then recharging again. This time, I tried tightening the connections at various times (duckhead, extension cord head, PB plug), and doing that does seem to get the battery to start recharging. I also noticed that the base of the adapter where the cord winds around the feet, and the adapter itself in that area, seem unusually warm. But the adapter is supposed to get warm when plugged in, right?
Has anyone else had this problem, and if so, did replacing the adapter fix it? (And should I buy fire insurance for my apartment?) Thanks for any advice you may have.

Here is an article on troubleshooting power adaptors:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1725
The body of the power adaptor can get warm, but it should not get too hot. If you think it is getting hot enough to possibly start a fire, you should stop using it immediately. Don't take any chances with it.
Do you have access to an Apple Store? If so, you could try one of their known good adaptors and see if the weird behavior continues with it. If not, then a new power adaptor might be in order. If the weird behavior continues, then you have a different problem.
You could also get your own power adaptor evaluated.
    Good luck!

  • Can anyone explain erratic power charging?

I have a 13" 2009 MBP.  The charging is very erratic. When it is plugged in, it can say that it is charging even though the percentage is dropping.  It can be plugged in all night and not charge at all while the color on the LED light is orange.  It can say that it is 100% one moment and then the next it will be 45%.  (Once it drops down like that it won't shoot back up, though it may stay level and then suddenly drop down.)  I have followed instructions for cleaning the contacts and it didn't help.  I bought a new charger and it first it appeared to help some but after a few weeks went back to its erratic behavior.  I reset the SMC.  Nothing helps.  You have to watch the battery indicator like a hawk and fiddle with the MagSafe connection several times to get it to start charging correctly again whenver the numbers are going down even though it is plugged in.  What perplexes me most is that it thinks it is charging when it clearly is not. Only by watching the percentage can you tell if it is really charging.  I've decided to sell it because I am tired of fighting with it but would like to at least give the buyer some clue as to what might be going on.  My local Apple certified repair shop wants a minimum of $129 plus any parts to fix it and I am just not sure it is worth it, especially if it ends up being the logic board.  Would be nice if I could figure this out before it goes out the door.

One more note.  The battery has 444 cycles on it.  (Supposed to be good for 1000.)  It will run a couple hours or more on the battery without any problem, if you can get it up to a full charge.  You can be watching a movie and not moving at all and the percentage will slowly increase, as it should, and then suddenly start dropping even though it is still plugged in and the LED light is orange.

  • Macbook Pro Charging Problem - Charges Erratically.

My Macbook Pro is charging erratically over the last 3 weeks. It charges at certain positions, while it does not charge at other positions. I tried resetting the power chip but it didn't help. I went to genius bar, apple and got it checked. However, they said that there was no problem with the adapter. Any suggestions?

It sounds as though you may have a frayed DC cable leading from the adapter brick to the computer. These cables sometimes fray near the brick or the MagSafe plug due to excessive bending in those locations, and the conductors inside them can break and make only intermittent contact when that happens. In the right position, contacts will be made and maintained and testing will show nothing wrong, but shift the cable slightly, the contact may fail, and charging may stop. When movement of the machine or the cable causes a change in charging behavior or power delivery, a frayed cable is the first suspect.

  • Touchscreen erratic while charging through power adapter

Hi, I have iPhone 4. When I charge my iPhone using power adapter, the touch screen behaves erratically -- e.g. when I press 3 on numpad, 9 may get typed or if I am on homescreen, and I tap on an application, a different app starts off. The phone works perfectly fine when charging thru my laptop's USB port.
Any suggestions -- is the power adapter faulty or is there some hardware problem?
    Thanks
    Sumit

After discovering that my partner's charger is fine and does not do this, I went to Apple Store to complain about faulty charger. turns out it was a cheap Chinese replica that came with my second-hand iPhone when I purchased it through eBay!!! Still the Apple Store had a quality spare and gave this to me for the inconvenience. How kind is that? Thank you Apple!
Now all problems solved. Happy Henk!

  • Mid 2012 Macbook air battery charging erratically

A few days ago, I noticed that my macbook air was not charging even though it was plugged to the power adapter. After some time, it showed that it was charging, but infinitely slowly. I did SMC reset and after a while, it was charging normally. But the problem reappeared some time later. Some times SMC reset seems to help, some times it does not. Some times it says that the battery is charged, while the battery percentage is showing less than 100. Also, the connecter light is also not synchronous with the battery state sometimes.
I had changed the battery a couple of months ago. The power adapter is also new. Also, I some times hear a very low buzz sound coming from the connector of the adapter.

Assuming you have the tools required (two different screw drivers and a plastic tool to lift the connector from the logic board) you will save about $30. If you don't have, or don't have access to the tools you'll save almost nothing. However, depending on your source you may wind up with a counterfeit Apple battery, a used battery, or a battery that may or may not be truly Apple compatible. Take it to an Apple Store.

  • No more 'full charge' icon and erratic battery behaviour

    I have a 40g 3G, thirteen months old, and it's going nuts.
Two weeks ago it stopped showing the 'full charge' icon when charging, it just goes on and on and on, either with AC or Firewire. The meter in the screen is numerical, and it never goes over 500. This means about five hours continuous play, unless I need to fiddle with the songs: the moment the hard drive spins again, the meter loses some 100 volts, picking them up again in a few seconds. Trouble is, when the meter goes under 200 the iPod screen shows the 'no battery power left' on the screen (not the icon, the message), then goes dead.
I tried resetting a million times, I even restored it. No use. I left it for a week to kill the battery off, but it just doesn't really ever die! The moment I click, the Apple logo comes out, but the moment the HD starts spinning, it all dies.
I went on doing this for days... please tell me I'm the one going nuts.

  • Z30 sometimes doesn't charge, charging indicator behaving erratically

I have had a Z30 for 2 months now, and from the start it had the following problems:
    - Charging indicator visible even though charger not connected
    - Charging indicator not visible when charger is connected
      - In this case, sometimes the Z30 would charge, sometimes it wouldn't - visible only after some time (battery charge level going up or down)
    - Occasionally not charging at all, whatever I do (using original BB charger). Only phone restart reliably helps in this case, but only for a day or so.
    - "Device monitor" consistently doesn't show anything for battery, CPU, or memory (RAM) usage, i.e. nothing about operational staus of the device. Applications loaded to flash memory are the only items shown.
This has become more of a problem lately. Especially the fact that I can't tell if the Z30 is charging is really annoying - when I connect the phone to a charger before going to bed, I want / need a phone that is fully charged the next morning. With my Z30 it is hit and miss.
    Any suggestions ?
    Thanks

    So, to clarify for me...
When your Z30 is connected to the OEM wall outlet charger, you do not see on the screen the small upper left yellow charging symbol (electrical/lightning icon)?
When your Z30 is DISconnected from that charger, that yellow charging symbol appears?

  • Constant, erratic beeping while charging and playing simultaneously

    Hi,
My 5th gen ipod started beeping through speakers/headphones while charging and playing at the same time. Once it has been unplugged from the ac charger and switched off/on again it is fine. This wasn't really much of a problem - a bit annoying - but as I mostly charged overnight and used during the day it didn't bother me; until now. I bought a dock with remote but as the dock automatically charges the ipod when the inserted it causes it to beep/bleep ALL the time, rendering the remote pretty useless cause i can't listen to music while it's in the dock due to the incessant beeping.
HELP! - how do I stop the beeping? Is it normal? I want to know if this is something that can't be cured before I go ahead and do something drastic like resetting my ipod completely...

there appears to be no solution...if yours does it you're stuck with it, as am I. :I

  • Erratic power behavior when wall charging

Whenever I charge my iPad using the charging block and AC current, I like to turn the power off altogether, rather than just put the iPad into sleep mode.
As soon as I plug it into the wall, the iPad power comes back on. When I go to shut it off again, sometimes it stays off, but sometimes it powers off and then back on after a few seconds.
Is this normal behavior when wall charging?

The ipad cannot charge white it is off. So therefore when you plug it into the wall it turns on to charge and turn it off the ipad knows the power is there but needs to be on to keep it so it turns on..
You are actually damaging your ipad when you turn it off while charging. The reason the second time it stays off a little longer is because the ipad stopped connection until the next wave of electricity flows which is why it turns back on.
