Erratic Curser Movements...

Hi,
I have Elements 11. I recently attempted to update to Camera Raw 7.4. After the update all of the camera profiles were missing leaving onlr ACR 4.3 and ACR 4.4. In order to restore the camera profiles I had to reinstall the programme. Since then the curser has been very erratic; freezing and jumping whenever I move it. I have reinstalled several times but the problem persists.
Is there anything I can do to rectify this issue?

If you don't have a second mouse, uninstall it from the Windows Device Manager then restart the machine to have the driver freshly installed.
Note that once you uninstall the mouse you will need to use keyboard controls.

Neale

Unplug AND hit the power button, don't just let it sit.
And yes Apple has changed the tech article on SMC Reset at least 4X.
My link to an older version comes up "Not found" and the idea of keeping and revising seems to have hit the shredder instead.

You need your OEM DVD to invoke and use AHT. It isn't left on the hard drive after updates and reformatting and a enw OS.
DU Status isn't going to find every error with the directory or file system and maybe not with there being bad or weak sectors.
You could format a drive and do a clean install and rebuild from there.
And seeing you have "dual core" then you have 2.66 4-core 2006 and would suspect video card for one, heat and dust, failing DiMM. All reasons to monitor using Temperature Monitor or another app. And helps to actually list off the System Profile (sans ser #) what your hardware actually is, incl. 3rd party add ons and external devices.

• Why does the curser move across desktop without touching the track pad?

The curser has started to move across the screen without touching the track pad. There's no mouse connected. All networking connections are turned off. As the curser moves across the desktop, it opens new folders??? It will open as many as a dozen new folders before it stops at the left side of the screen and wouldn't you know it, the warranty expired last month! Any help to figure out a fix would be appreciated.

• Pro mouse erratic/curser freeze-up

My Pro Mouse has been jumpy/erratic for some time- using it on a white sheet of paper seems to help but now have new problem; recently downloaded upgrade to 10.4.8. Since doing so the mouse goes erratic then curser freezes on screen - curser does not move (stays an "arrow") and will not respond to keyboard or mouse. Shut down and restart fixes problem, sometimes for hours, sometimes only for a few minutes, then problem returns. Now freezes a half dozen times in a few hours of use. Doesn't make any difference whether/if applications are open.
any suggestions?
thanks

Hi, ojnab -
A couple of other things to consider or try -
• According to Apple KBase Article #58649 - Apple Pro Keyboard: Devices Connected, the keyboard won't handle passing much power through. Try connecting the mouse to a USB port other than one on the keyboard.
• The Apple Pro mouses had a defect - the wires inside the cable can fray at the point the cable leaves the mouse body, causing random open and/or short circuits in the USB bus. One test for that is to use a different, known-good mouse - after restarting with that replacement in use, if the problem disappears the fault is probably with the original mouse.

• Erratic mouse movement

When using my USB IR mouse or a magic mouse the cursor suddenly jumps about the screen often to a "Hot corner" which turns the display off. I do not recall that this occurred before I loaded Bootcamp and Windows XP Pro.
Any help out there?

I've seen this happen for two reasons.
1.) My imac is about to overheat and crash. The pointer seems to jump around the edges of the screen and on rare occasion reservse themselves. UP=DOWN LEFT=RIGHT..etc.
2.) The mouse picked up a hair and the IR light is bouncing off of it and causing erratic movement. (More often the case)
Hopefully 2, but be mindful of 1. I would be curious if you have iStat and notice any difference in operating temperature during these times.

• Observing many computers causes erratic mouse movements on client macs

hi!
I administer a mac lab and when I select all the computers in the class to observe, the student mouses move erraticly.
do you guys ever encounter this problem ?
thanks for your help.
macs are imacs.

Got it !
While waiting for Apple to come up with a bug fix (if they ever do, since it probably affects only french users.)
You can always copy the RFBMultiObserveWindow.nib folder from the English.lproj to the French.lproj... (After having made a copy of the original NIB folder first of course...) And this fixes that...
I have noticed no localization aberration while doing this.
Good luck !

• X220 Trackpad curser movement with Ethernet plugged in and with VGA connected to projector

Thre are many issues discussed about trackpad problem. My problem comes in the trackpad when X220 is connected to Ethernet port. The curser is not stable and it jumps aout 1/2 cm right and left withlout any figer movement, It vibrates on its own when only finger is placed on the touchpad. This does not happen when Ethernet port is diconnected even with 90w adapter or 65w adapter plugged in. It comes with Ethernet only.
The same preoblem comes again when VGA port is connected to Projector. In my case problm has no affect with any power adapter.(90 or 65 w) plugged in.
This is so problametc that simple tasks of selection is delayed or wrong selection is made.

• Curser moves all over the place when typing in forms, hotmail & this text box

I upgraded at Christmas with a SSD & Windows 7. Since then when I try to type in text boxes such as this the curser will move back or forward a few lines. I've been advised turn off the firefox spell check but this hasn't helped.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
*Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
Try to disable hardware acceleration.
*Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"
If disabling hardware acceleration works then check if there is an update available for your graphics display driver.

• Erratic pointer movement w/ Illustrator

I work a lot with Photoshop and Illustrator and have noticed that my "pointer" is errantic when trying to select and/or move vector points in Illustrator. The only way to eliminate this problem is to go into System's "Accessibility" icon and change mouse button to "without inertia". I have the same problem with my iMac. I like the scrolling feature to be checked ON, mainly for reading web pages and such. The below pic is how my current setup is, to avoid the pointer yips. Would really like to scroll though.

Illustrator's CPU load is very low.
Here is actually what is happening:
While selecting, then moving a vector point, the entire artboard screen moves slightly in the same direction that I'm moving the point. I am being careful not to slide any finger/s over the mouse while performing this action.
The inertia feature is nice to have on; I don't need to move pointer to bottom or side scrolls in order to quickly access closeup views of the artboard.
This situation happens on both my MacPro and iMac. My files are not large at all. I know its a matter of mouse settings, as my current resolution is to 'turn off' mouse inertia in Accessibility. The Mouse Settings have nothing but 'track' settings. I was hoping there is a fine tuning ability.
I don't recall this being an issue prior to CS5 upgrades

• Erratic Cursor Movements in Photoshop (Vista 64) with Clone Stamp

Hellom first post here! I've looked everywhere but either noone else has this problem or I'm not using the correctly vocabularly in my searches. You can see a screen recording of the problem @ onmQ&feature=player_profilepage I am just trying to fix some seems for a texture in Photoshop. I'm using a pretty simple method of a half opacity Clone Stamp brush and just tapping the obvious seams with other parts of the image. All goes well till about 38 seconds into it the Clone Stamp makes a huge streak in the lower left half of the video. You'll even notice that my cursor didn't go over there.... its similar to drawing lines while holding shift (giving you straight lines) but it happens randomly and not on purpose... any ideas? Its reallllllllllly annoying.
Thanks in advance.

Tell us the following:
Photoshop version number
Amount of RAM installed
Hard drive(s) capacity
Make and model number of video card
Make sure PS is version 11.0.1 and update your video card drivers anyway.

• Erratic Mouse Movements

Since upgrading to lion, I have noticed my mouse has began moving randomly to different corners of the screen. Is anyone else experiencing this, or do you have a fix?
Any contribution would be greatly appreciated.
Nathan

I have had the same prob on my MacBook Pro. Tackpad mouse as well as a wired and wireless mouse. Eratic, gets stuck, jumps or no response.
I am very very sorry that I downloaded Lion. Snow Leopard worked very well but read that Lion was SOOOOOO much better.
This reminds me of dealing with Windows operating systems when there were first released! I have actually started using my PC Laptop again.

• Bluetooth mouse - logitech mx900

I have an mx900 connected to my iBook G4 through bluetooth. I'm using the built in bluetooth with the laptop. The mouse works, but not very nicely. While moving the mouse around, there is occational skipping, or lagginess, stuttering, or whatever you want to call it. Say I move the mouse in small fast circles, the mouse cursor will make small jumps, 1-9mm, every few seconds, or not move at all for about 1ms every few seconds. This is sufficient for making the mouse useless in FPS games, and for precision drawing. I don't know whether the problem is the fact that logitech has no drivers for this mouse, or that the bluetooth drivers in OSX (10.4.6) are faulty. Whatever it is, does anyone have a solution?

Hi Douglas,
I know that the trackpad movements are related to the PMU, but what an external mouse? It does control some input/output, but does that include Bluetooth devices? Any thoughts?

Hi Ash,
You may want to look at Logitech: Erratic Curser Movement - Optical or Trackballs, Logitech: What can cause interference with my cordless product, and what can I do?, Logitech: Using an optical mouse on a dark surface, and Using a Logitech Bluetooth product on a Macintosh computer.
The last link says,
"Question:Can I use my Logitech Bluetooth product on my Mac?
Answer: Although it’s possible for you to use a Logitech Bluetooth product on your system, Logitech does not support these devices in any other operating system besides Windows XP and Windows 2000. However, since our devices strictly adhere to the Bluetooth standard, the hardware should operate in other operating systems. Even though the hardware may work, you will not be able to install the software and therefore will not be able to use some features such as secure data transmission and extra function keys or mouse buttons."
I hope you find these links to be helpful. The links were huge/strange so they might not work. If that is the case, just search for Logictech (I used Google) and go to Support.

• My trackpad is going mad and the curser don't respond anymore and doing erratic actions

I can't control my trackpad, the curser is doing actions, clicking/closing windows ... like someone else has the control.
I have removed all the fancy fonctions with 2, 3 fingers, I just kept the right click
thanks for your help

There are several possible causes for this issue. Please take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried until it's resolved. Some may not apply in your case.
1. Follow the instructions in this support article, and also this one, if applicable. A damaged or defective AC adapter could be the cause, even if it's the right kind.
2. Press down all four corners of the trackpad at once and release. If there's any effect, it's likely to be temporary, and in that case the unit must be serviced or replaced.
3. Open the Bluetooth preference pane in System Preferences and delete all pointing devices other than the trackpad, if applicable. Disconnect any USB pointing devices. By a "pointing device," I mean a peripheral that moves the cursor, such as a trackpad, mouse, trackball, or graphics tablet. A plain keyboard is not a pointing device.
4. Start up in safe mode and test, preferably without launching any third-party applications. If you don't have the problem in safe mode, but it comes back when you restart as usual, stop here and post your results. Do the same if you can't start in safe mode. If there was no difference in safe mode, go on to the next step.
5. Reset the System Management Controller.
6. If you're using a Bluetooth trackpad, investigate potential sources of interference, including USB 3 devices.
7. A swollen battery in a portable computer can impinge on the trackpad from below and cause erratic behavior. If you have trouble clicking the trackpad, this is likely the reason. The battery must be replaced without delay.
8. There's a report that a (possibly defective) Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter can cause the built-in trackpad of a MacBook to behave erratically. If you're using such an adapter, disconnect it and test.
9. There's also a report of erratic cursor movements caused by an external display that was connected but not turned on.
10. If none of the above applies, or if you have another reason to think that your computer is being remotely controlled, remove it from the network by turning off Wi-Fi (or your Wi-Fi access point), disconnecting from a Bluetooth network link, and unplugging the Ethernet cable or USB modem, whichever is applicable. If the cursor movements stop at once, you should suspect an intrusion.
11. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine and/or external trackpad tested.

• Illustrator CS3 - curser with a life of its own!

I have a curser problem will all the tools in illustrator under windows vista. When I try to select a point, scale, or draw any object the actual active area of the curser moves! For example if I draw a box the start point is in the middle of the pen tool. If I try to select a point with the arrow tool it will not let me and I have to click on a random area around the actual point untill it is selected. The most annoying is when scaling an object, when I try to click and drag a handle the curser moves to the side, away from the handle all by itself! I have been using illustrator for almost 10 years and I have never seen anything like this, please help!!!
Regards Dave

David,
You didn't mention whether your mouse was wireless/wired, optical/ball/other ...
Mice are interrupt driven. Check to see if you have any IRQ conflicts in the Control Panel-> System-> Hardware-> Device Manager. Also check the IRQs in Start-> Programs-> Accessories-> System Tools-> System Information. Are any devices sharing interrupts with your mouse? Also the more you tax your system resources, the more likely you are to have issues with interrupt-driven devices.
If you have a ball mouse is it clean inside? Twist open the bottom panel and clean out the gunk. I clean the roller ball with alcohol and a Q-tip on a regular basis and use a pen knife to scrape gunk off the x and y rollers, and blast it out with a little dust off. (while everything is unplugged of course).
If you have an optical mouse, what kind of surface are you working on? Optical mice don't like very smooth, very coarse or reflective surfaces. I've tried a variety of surfaces and the cardboard backing from a pad of paper is the best lo-tech solution for me. I've actually placed my laptop's optical mouse on a glass table and the cursor went shooting off the screen.
Assuming you have any of the following items, have you tried: changing the wireless channel on your router; temporarily turning off wireless; temporarily pulling the batteries on your wireless keyboard; switching channels on your wireless keyboard or mouse (see the hardware manual); moving your wireless dongle to a USB port on the front of your PC; changing the batteries in your wireless mouse?
If your PC is hidden away under the desk or in a cabinet, the signal strength may be low causing the pointer to behave erratically. Reflective glass surfaces (windows) behind your computer may also interfere with the signal.
Hope some of this helps.
