Erratic discovery of HP printers using wireless/bonjour

Computers: 5 Macs, all wirelessly connected to internet via Airport
Wireless network: Airport Extreme base station (first floor), Airport Express (basement)
Printers: HP Color Laserjet 2600n (in basement, directly connected by USB to basement Airport Express), HP Officejet 7410 (nearby in basement, wireless-enabled), HP Photosmart 7200 (first floor, wireless-enabled)
My expertise: modest at best, useless in this case
Issue 1: Laserjet 2600n can be discovered (Bonjour) from anywhere and can print wirelessly from Word, Photoshop, Preview, etc; however, using HP Utility, Laserjet is not discovered (Bonjour or otherwise)
Issue 2: Officejet 7410 when used previously in different location printed wirelessly without any issue, using WEP key for network security; now located in basement next to Airport Express (with strong signal), 7410 shows the name of the same network without difficulty, but after printer asks for WEP key and it is entered, printer eventually says network connection failed
Help!!

Hi, thanks a lot for responding.  Re #1, I replaced the USB cable from Airport Express to the 2600n with an ethernet cable.   It continues to work re printing, but still is not discovered by the HP utility.  Certainly it isn't critical that the HP utility work wirelessly (after all, printing does work!) but it would be nice re supplies, etc.  Any further thoughts?
Re issue #2, the 7410 and one of the laptops are next to each other about 6 feet away from the Airport Express.   Since it's in the basement, there are a limited number of options re moving the Express further away, and the best option seems to kill the signal from the Airport Extreme through the floor to the Express.  Hmmm.   Interestingly, when the 7410 did work wirelessly it was quite close to the Extreme base station.  I can't help but wonder if there is some configuration issue re setting up the Express that has relevance to the 7410 but not to the computers in the basement (which continue to have strong signals to the Express).  Is that possible?
One thing I also wonder: can the Express be connected to two printers at the same time?  What I'm getting at is maybe connecting the 7410 to the Express with a USB or an ethernet cable, instead of using the 7410's native wireless connection?  If so, then the 2600 could be connected using the other cable, and we'd be working...  yes?

  • How to you "publish" Bonjour Shared printers using Workgroup Manager?

    Dear Friends,
Hello. We have just spend considerable time setting up Mac OS X 10.6.4 server to host some printers to our Mac clients (previously we had used a Windows print server but it was too slow and inflexible). We have the printers we need set-up and shared out as Bonjour Shared printers because that sends out all of the duplex setting we need. I have tried to "publish" these using Workgroup Manager and they do not show up on the list. How do you "publish" these printers using WGM? NOT: We can't just let people select "nearby" printers because we want to set a default and use kerberos security.

    Eric T Gadsby wrote:
    Anthony,
Thank you for you help. The procedure you outline is what we have attempted to do. We add the Bonjour-shared printers to a client and then open Work Group Manager on the same computer but when you go to the "Printing" pane of "Preferences" the printers do not show under "Available Printers", neither do USB printers.
Hope this clarifies our problem. We would like to use Work Group Manager as advertised but it doesn't seem to be working for us.
    Welcome to my world…
This 'bug' has existed for several major versions of Mac OS X Server (10.6, 10.5, and maybe 10.4). I did report it more than once to Apple as an official bug but they don't seem to 'get it' despite my best efforts.
    You can do the following
Add a printer directly to a computer running WGM,
Then use WGM to 'push' the printer out to clients,
The model of the printer will then also be pushed out to clients so they automatically select the correct driver but not the correct paper tray/duplex/etc. settings.
    You can do the following
Add a Mac OS X Printer Server queue to the computer running WGM (which must not be the same computer acting as the Mac OS X Printer Server) if you do this via the Bonjour advertisement of the queue then it will not get the model, or any settings from the print server.
You can then push this queue out to clients via WGM
    You cannot do the following
Add a Mac OS X Printer Server queue to the computer running WGM (which must not be the same computer acting as the Mac OS X Printer Server) if you do this via IPP, then the WGM machine will get the model automatically, but not any paper tray/duplex settings.
However this queue cannot then be seen in WGM and therefore cannot be pushed out to clients.
Apparently doing custom XML, would allow also pushing out printer settings, but this is so far from 'the Macintosh Way' that only a masochist would do it.
This area is one of the few where the Mac is significantly worse than Windows, it is an area that Microsoft (mostly) sorted literally decades ago. Not only in the Windows world can you push the printer model, and the printer settings, but you can even if needed push the entire printer driver out to the (Windows) clients.

  • Problems printing to HP printers using Bonjour and XP

    Good afternoon all
I am unable to print from my ThinkPad X61 PC laptop running XP (Service Pack 3) to either of my HP printers (Laserjet 6MP and PhotoSmart C3180) connected to my Airport Extreme via a USB hub. They work fine from my MacBook running Snow Leopard, or when directly connected to my PC.
I am able to install both printers using Bonjour Printer Wizard (and recognize them through Airport Utility). I then print a document, it spools to the print queue, then generates an error saying the document failed to print. I have tried it without the hub with the same result.
I have reinstalled Bonjour and the printer drivers and followed the Printer Troubleshooting Guide procedure to no avail. I have also tried the TCP/IP port creation which did not work. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Yours

    Hi Pahu,
Thanks for you reply. Here's some additional information because I'm not quite sure how to resolve the network addressing as you described. The router is set up as a DHCP server, using the standard 192.168.1.1 IP address, and the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0 The starting IP address is 192.168.1.100, and I have it set to allow up to 50 connections. (No particular reason, I think that may have been the default.) The printer is set up to check a variety of connection protocols, starting with DHCP. If that fails, it moves to BOOTP, etc. When I print the network configuraton page from the printer, it tells me the IP address is 169.254.18.32, subnet mask 255.255.0.0, default gateway 169.254.18.32, and the IP is configured by AUTOIP.
In the past, when it has been working properly, the printer shows an IP address of 192.168.1.10X, usually .100 or .101, but it depends on which device I've powered up first. This is what I would expect, given that the printer should be communicating with the router and be assigned an IP address by DHCP. What I can't figure out is why the printer reverts to its internal default IP address 169.254.18.32, and why this is inaccessible even if I try to designate the printer as an IP printer and type in the printer's IP address.
Do I need to set the printer to refresh its DHCP lease more often to ensure it doesn't get cut off by the router? How do I make sure the printer stays on the same subnet as the computers if they're all on the same router? Should I assign the printer a static IP address like 192.168.1.100, then set the DHCP range to start at 192.168.1.101? Sorry to ask so many questions, I'm not a network expert and I didn't think this printer would be such a pain to configure.
    Cheers,
    R

  • How can I share printers using a non apple router, imac to ipad?

Newbie in osx, but experienced in linux.
My new imac has 3 printers setup for sharing, but ipad 2 / iphone 4 fail to see them.  I am using the belkin router that I owned already, instead of buying an Airport.
    I found a solution at askubuntu.com Q 26130 at http://askubuntu.com/questions/26130/how-can-share-my-printer-so-that-i-can-use- it-with-airprint
I setup a linux machine on the network, with no physical connection to any printer. The 1st, an hp fax psc has a usb to imac, as the 2nd, an hp psc, the 3rd printer is an epson wireless, which is only connected on the network by wifi to the belkin router. I'm certain the imac "sharing" is properly setup, because the linux machine has no trouble finding the printers.  Only the ipad / iphone have a problem.
Once I put the linux machine (with the above changes) on the network, everything works as desired.  I can print on the ipad / iphone to any of the 3 printers, using the built in Airport printer routine (not the epson or hp apps). And the imax and linux machines can also print on all 3.
So, I suspect the imac isn't telling the router to display the printers on the network in a way that iOS can see them. I know it would work if I owned an Airport, but I'd rather not spend that much right now.
I'm sure someone knowledgable in OSX might have an idea where to stick an Airport definition file, created from the python script in askubuntu, that could solve this without having to run the linux laptop all the time.  Any ideas?
    TIA

It's possible to use free software (Virtualbox and Ubuntu) to fix the broken iOS 5 Airprint printing with non supported printers.  Here's a fix that works on my imac, but should also work on even a windows pc.
My setup is a lion imac with 2 non-airprint supported usb printers attached, a belkin wifi router that provides network connectivity for my imac, ipad, and iphone.
Install ubuntu 11.10 in a virtualbox vm.  Specify to use the "Bridged Adapter" with "en1: WiFi (AirPort)" for the network hardware.  Make sure the imac's usb printers are setup with sharing.  On ubuntu, select System Settings > Printers and add your imac's shared printers to the list.  Then start ubuntu's firefox and set "localhost:631" in the address. On the administration tab, under the Server section, check "Share printers connected to this system" and hit Change Settings button to activate it.  Go back to ubuntu's printer setup, and right click on each printer and check that the properties Policies tab does not have any messages about it being unshared. If so, then go back to firefox and make sure the Server sharing checkbox is enabled. It may help to reboot.
Fire up virtualbox to be able to use AirPort printing to your imac's usb printers, when you want to print from the iphone or ipad. This also works on iOS 5.
Only problem is error message from iphone to check the printer for errors, even though it actually prints ok.

  • Macbook Pro 10.6.8 - Cursor moves by itself, types by itself, opens dashboard by itself, stops responding to keysto22000 there you go! Have switched out keyboards to no avail. Do not use wireless.

Cursor moves by itself, types by itself, opens dashboard by itself, stops responding to keysto22000 - there be a good example. Seems to like the number 2. Have switched out keyboards to no avail. Do not use wireless. Does not start immediately upon turning on computer. Everything is okay from 10 to 20 minutes, then bang. Can deattach then attach keyboard and get a few moments of quiet. All this started today.

If the same erratic behavior occurs when the external KB and mouse are completely disconnected, I think it's time for a Genius Bar appointment to have the problem diagnosed.
    http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/
You'll probably want to get the machine revved up ahead of time so it's misbehaving when you walk in the door, rather than count on it to act up — or not — after you and the Genius have been standing around waiting for a while. (BTW, I'm assuming that once it starts acting up, it continues to do so until you give up and shut it down. Is that true?)

  • What HP printers use HP363 cartridges? Appalled by customer service.

So, I just phoned HP sales to ask what printers use the HP363 cartridges, because my HP D7360 printer has just packed in and I have a load of cartridges for it, and was rather coldly told "you'll just have to look through them all to find out".
I'm really losing my patience with HP.  This is my 3rd HP D3760, it too has also broken down and when I make an enquiry about buying a new printer I'm brushed off with that kind of customer support!
I'm wondering why I'm even looking at another HP.  Were it not for the cartridges, I doubt I would.
Is there a quick way of establishing what, current, HP printers use the HP363 cartridges?
    Thank you.
    Nathon.

The HP363 cartridge is meant for European printers. If you log into www.hp.co.uk, you can find the HP 363 for sale. From this link, it appears these ink cartridges are meant for our "Connery" writing systems that are used in some of our 2006, 2007 and 2008 printers. Examples include the following listed here.

  • 2 printers on wireless, any issues 7520 a4 and 7612 a3

    Hi,
I have an a4 printer; photo smart 7520, which I use primarily for a4 related documents. It is connected wireless to my laptop. I am now planning to purchase a3 printer office jet 7612 primarily for a3 documents.
I would like to know can I have both printers connected wireless to my laptop?
And are there any issues when doing this.
    Much appreciated, as always

Scan for nearby networks in your neighborhood using a tool such as InSSIDer or Vistumbler and see if there are any other networks operating on the same channel as your Wireless network. If there are, see if you can set the router to broadcast on the least busy channel in your neighborhood. Channels 1, 6, and 11 are the best to use.
Oh, and I would switch to WPA2 if possible.

  • C306g PhotoSmart printing slow using wireless

Printer would print very slow to not at all when using wireless. Wired directly to my router it would perform as expected. I am using a Cisco Linksys E3000 N router with simultaneous Dual-band (2.4 & 5.0 GHz). Hp found the dual band was causing the issue. Found this printer will only operate under the 2.4 GHz. Had to disable the 5.0 GHZ to make the wireless function work. Also make sure the channel selection of the router is set to eleven (11). Channel default setting is six (6).
I do a lot of video streaming to multiple devices (TVs, Laptops, DVD players). This change did not seem to effect the performance of the other devices.

Hello , Welcome to the HP Community. I hope you have a pleasant experience here.  I understand you are having an issue with slow printing on your HP Photosmart C6150 All-in-One printer. I'd love to help you with this. First, I'd like you to try printing a self test page again: HP Photosmart C6100 All-in-One Series - Printing the Self-Test Diagnostic Page If the test page printed in less than 60 seconds, then I would suggest following the steps here to troubleshoot the driver and settings on your computer:HP All-in-One Printers - Slow Printing in Windows: Computer Issues If the issue persists after these steps, I'd recommend replacing your USB cable (with a smaller one if it is over 6ft long). If the test page took longer that 60 seconds to print, then I would suggest following the steps here to troubleshoot an issue you may be having with the printer hardware:HP All-in-One Printers - Slow Printing in Windows: Hardware Issues Another thing I would suggest, if the printer is slow even from the printer, would be to make sure the printer is plugged directly into a wall outlet. The printer does have a power moderator built in, so when plugged into a power surge or battery backup, it can often not get enough power. Please respond to let me know if these steps help to resolve your issue!Have a great day.

You need to power off the modem for 15-30 seconds, then power back up and then connect. The modem is remembering the last connection (your friend).

If you have an iPad 2 you can wirelessly mirror it to your TV via the ATV device. If you have an iPad 1 then you can use airplay but not all apps are enabled to push video, as the developer needs to do this.
You can also view all local content from iTunes or your iPad, pushed via airplay/home-sharing.
The other services available are iTunes movie rentals, TV shows (past purchases viewable from the cloud), Photo Stream, Netflix, Vimeo, Podcasts, Youtube, Sports etc.

Is the  ipod nano 6th gen capable of sending signal to wireless headphones. I am 57 and do not like earphones and wire. Would like to get the nano. I understand the iphone 4 can use wireless headphones, but i can not wear it on my wrist like a watch. Thank you. techie mawmaw.

What is your price range. I know exactly what you are talking about. I always used headphones while mowing and I used to runt he cord through my shirt to prevent it from getting caught on the steering controls of the mower but one day the cord came untucked form my pants pocket ripping the cord straight out of the headphone itself. They were nice Sennheisers to!
I ended up replacing them with these http://en-us.sennheiser.com/wireless-bluetooth-headset-headphone-smart-mobile-phone-stereo-mm-500-x they are pricey at 330 but will last you many years if they are taken care of. Sennheisers are excellent quality. Best Buy oddly doesnt carry the 500 series they have the 450 and 550 but not the 500. Completely ignore the Beats by Dr. Dre they are horrible for the price point they are!
The noise cancellation is great and they are very comfortable. Like you I dont care for earbuds as I have tried many and they all hurt my ears and on-ear style would eventually start hurting my outer ear but these are very comfy!
