Erratic iPhone 3GS WiFi

I just wanted to way in on the hot topic of erratic wifi on the 3gs. I have both the 3g and the new 3gs. the 3g is stable. The 3gs is fine one minute, then completely erratic the next. Four bars then 2, then 1 then back to full strength. Sloooooow speeds. Unusable speeds. Then later back to normal...

So long as we are weighing in: My 2G was very good on wi-fi (still is since we use it as a Skype phone). My 3GS looks the same regarding receiving wi-fi signals (I have three networks in my home). In fact, it seems a bit better, since it detects more neighborhood wi-fi signals than did the 2G.

hi my iphone 3gs wifi, bluetooth and imei not working

Do you have modified software installed on your device?
If not, try to set it up as new device, explained here, without using the latest backup afterwards, in case it is containing corrupt data.
How to back up your data and set up as a new device
If this does not help, you'll have to get it serviced, there might be a hardware problem.

  • My iPhone 3GS wifi wont connect if I leave the house with phone and come back

So my iPhone 3GS (which i bought in December 2011) (out of warranty), will not connect to wifi.. My phone already has problems (randomly i lost my network and it always stuck on No Service, which doesnt allow me to make calls or send texts ). I have a backup phone that I use, but I still use the wifi on my phone for playing games, listening to music, etc. (basically using it as an iPod). But recently, I started having problems with the wifi, every time I tried to load a page, the wifi dropped and it did this constantly. After a while it quit dropping, until one day I left the house with my phone and when I came back I saw that I was unable to connect with the wifi. At home the wifi works, but whenever I leave the house with it, the wifi doesn't connect for a while. I stopped leaving my house with the phone so this problem stopped for a while.  But today I ran into a new problem, I did not leave the house with the phone, but simply turned the phone off, left it at home, came back after 2 hours, and turned it back on and was unable to get wifi. I reset the network settings a couple times, but still when I try to connect to a network.. I get "Choose a Network... Other.." with no networks at all showing up. I've been waiting 2 hours yet nothing shows up.. Any help?

Basic troubleshooting steps in the following order.
    1. Reset. Press and hold both Power and Home Buttons together till Apple Logo appears.
    2. Restore to a backup.
    3. Backup, Restore in iTunes and setup as new.

  • IPhone 3gs wifi not working

I'm using an iPhone 3GS and an airport express (the first version to have 802.11n capability) with the latest firmware/iOS on each.  I've set up my airport express which is working fine with my macbook.  When I go to connect my iPhone to the network, I can go into the WiFi settings, find the network, enter the password, but then instead of connecting all the way, the "loading spinner" just sits next to the network forever and the top left corner of the screen continues to say "3G".  I can use Airport Utility on my phone to manipulate the airport settings and I can even use AirPlay, but for data my phone continues to rely on 3G.  I've tried turning off cellular data, at which point the "connected to WiFi" icon shows up at the top of the phone, but no app is able to use any data functions (safari says I'm not connected to the internet).
I know my router is working fine since I'm able to connect with my laptop and use the internet as I always would.  I've tried changing channels, making sure that 802.11 b/g is enabled, "forgetting the network" in my phone, restarting my phone, restarting the router, and restarting the modem, and trying to connect my phone when it is the only device on the network.  Any thoughts on what else might be causing this problem?

Open the setup page of rouer, under the security tab..Uncheck Block Anonymous Internet Requests and click on Save Settings...Under the Wireless tab, click on the subtab Advance Wireless Settings tab and Change the Beacon Interval to 75,Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304,Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 and Click on Save Settings...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...

  • Fix for my iPhone 3Gs WiFi problems after upgrade to iOS 4

Posting incase this helps. I upgraded to iOS 4 on my 3Gs while away from home and came home to find that I couldn't get a reliable connection to my home WiFi which had been rock solid when I left two weeks ago.
My network consistes of a telco supplied router & ADSL box connected by LAN to an Airport Extreme which then connects wirelessly to an Airport Time Machine in another room (actually a steel lined safe room so I have to be sure that the door is open). The Time Machine is set to act as a range extender as is an Airpot Express N I have connected to a hifi.
Well after rebooting everything and scratching my head I took a look at the wireless settings on the base Airport Extreme. *It was set to 802.11n only!* I, therefore, have no idea how my iPhone was able to connect to this up to now. *I've set it now to 802.11n (b/g compatible)* and the iPhone once again connects and re-connects without any trouble at all.
I know the 3Gs is not capable of 802.11n but I can assure you that for the last few months I haven't changed that router so it was certainly working in that 802.11n only mode on that apple router.

Hey, that's a great tip for others who are having issues to check out. Thanks for posting your findings!

  • IPhone 3GS WiFi problem

Hey folks. I've had issues with my WiFi for a few months now. I turn my receiver on in settings, but no networks show up.
I know for a fact there is a wireless signal (my university's res-hall signal) but it wont show up. When I was home over break I reset my router and I was still unable to connect. Unable to connect on my fraternity's signal also. I have reset my network settings to no avail.
I am running 4.2.1. Figured I'd check here first before I shell out $30 to talk to an Apple rep (Thats pretty ridiculous you need to pay for support). If it is a broken receiver, would I need to pay for a new phone?

I have the same problem on my iPhone 3S. It is disappointing that Apple will not step up and comment on this widespread problem, apparantly caused by the latest update. I am losing my confidence in Apple products.
Apple continues to ignore this customer complaint that was caused by their update.

  • My iPhone 3GS wifi tab on the settings is grey and won't let me click on it

I updated it before Christmas and it was working fine, I only noticed the other day when I was at my mates. I haven't messed about with the settings so I don't no what's wrong.

There are multiple steps you can take before it may be necassary to replace the iPhone. First of all try Airplane Mode for 30 seconds or do a Hard Reset. Reset your router and test again. If this still fails and the iOS is up to date check how old your router is...Also see how many devices are connected to this WiFi. NExt step is to test on another network. IF this all fails, you should try doing a backup of your data through iTunes. Then Restoring your iPhone and setting up as a new device instead of restoring from backup.
If the issue is still present when you have done this then i would recommend either an ARS ( Apple Retail Store) or calling AppleCare.

Apple doesn't have anything to do with this other than enforcing the DRM protection. The developers of this content expect to be paid if someone wants to use their content. When you purchase content in the app store, you purchase a license to use the content. This license does not permit you or anyone else to resell or give this content away. The individual you purchased the phone from simply does not have the right to sell or give away any purchased content on the phone. You were deceived.

  • Just got an iPhone 3GS, How do I connect to home WiFi network?

I posted this in the network discussion as well, but wasn't getting answers and I need to resolve this problem as soon as possible.
I just got my brand new iPhone 3GS. I just recently finished fully charging it and activating it. I am exploring my new device but I am getting extremely frustrated as to connecting to WiFi. I want to use WiFi for web browsing, but when I go to WiFi on my iPhone it says No Networks (or something of the sort). I try to enter in the name of my network (which I know). But I don't know what kind of security OR the password to the network.
I really want to enjoy this phone/gadget but I don't know how to set it up to connect to my network.
Can somebody help me in telling me where I can find the security type and password to my network.
    Thanks!

Sounds like you (or a buddy who helped you) setup your home network to Cloak its SSID (name). Thus as you said, you need to manually enter it.
But from there, you will also need to know any Key (password) you set on it to join.
If you don't know those items, not much we can do to help (now I could always drive on by fire up airrack-ng suite and break in for ya)
You can always go to your computer, try to access your router (odds are http://192.168.1.1 ) via your browser.
Then see what settings you can get to.
If it was locked down, then I suggest going to your routers website and read up how to reset the router (odds are button on back you have to hold in for 10 secs) which will reset the router back to default settings.
All devices will then have to re-join your default network (real manual that came with router or get one online before resetting).

  • Help Me!!! IOS 5.1.1 update on Iphone 3gs screwed up my wifi

I updated my iphone 3gs to IOS 5.1.1 and now my wifi is interrupted. Also, internet speed slowed down.Has anyone else experienced this? How do u fix this problem?Tried and tried to find a solution.Starting to lose my cool.Had no problem with Apple products until now but am starting to lose confidence in their products. It's as if they know about this problem but don't have an answer to it.If anyone can solve this issue please, please let me know.I would be most greatful.HELP!!!

As you pointed out, turning on Compass in Location Services will only provide you the Longitude and Latitude on on the compass interface.
To enable the "True North" option you will have to turn on the "Compass Calibration". It is located in the "System Services" menu.
iOS5: Settings > Location Services > System Services
iOS6: Settings > Privacy > Location Services > System Services
Based on the test I just did (iPhone4 iOS6), both "Compass" and "Compass Calibration" have to be turned on for the "True North" option to be enabled in the Compass app.

  • I am facing wifi and mobile 2G signal issue after upgrading to IOS 6 from IOS 5 in IPhone 3GS. Please help, restoring setting even didn't helped.

I am facing wifi and mobile 2G signal issue after upgrading to IOS 6 from IOS 5 in IPhone 3GS. The mobile carrier signal as well as WIFI suddenly drops zero and are then restored automatically. Sometimes i cannot conenct to WIFI even standing infront of WIFI router. Please help, restoring setting even didn't helped.

Update: my phone's connecting to the WiFi again. I don't know what did the trick. I did nothing since reinstalling the software. It hadn't worked then, it is now. I tried connecting to my dad's phone's hotspot( he uses a Moto G), and it worked. I then tried connecting to the WiFi at a friend's house, and when I came back home, my phone was able to connect to my WiFi! Is it of any significance that my friend's router doesn't require a password? My issue has been resolved( for now; I hope I'm not counting my chickens before they've hatched). For anyone facing a similar issue, I suggest you try everything I did:
    1. Turn your router off for a minimum of 30 seconds, turn it back on and try connecting.
    2. Click on the WiFi network you are connected to, scroll to the bottom, tap "Renew Lease".
    3. Do a soft and hard reset.
    4. Reset network settings.
    5. Back your data up, erase all content from settings menu, restore from backup.
    6. Reinstall your software( put it in recovery mode).
I am not sure which of the above worked for me. Make sure you try everything. If none of the above works, take it to a genius bar or an authorised service provider. Good luck! :)
