Erratic iSight problem on MacBook Pro

The iSight camera on my MacBook Pro 17" comes and goes constantly. It vanishes from System Profiler at times too. I've rest the NVRAM and logged in as other users too. Its like it has a mind of its own. Turning on the green LED and off, then refusing to let other programs like iChat or Photo Booth from connecting, sometimes saying the camera is in use even. Its very fustrating also since I use the camera sometimes in iChat or Skype only to have the image lockup. The camera vanishes. I'm not sure if its a hardware problem or a kernel problem.
I've decided to try to monitor its failure with the HardwareGrowler.app. The camera randomly connects and disconnects. Growl notification show:

Hello Aaton
If you have not installed any new hardware since your MacBook Pro worked correctly, it is possible that your problem may be hardware related.  Because of the intermittent nature of your problem, unless the problem is repeatable when running some particular software or performing some function that could indicate possible software or device conflicts, hardware problems in your Mac seems even more likely.
Unless you get better suggestions from iNtel Mac users, here are the common solutions that help most avoid a visit to their Apple Service Technician for the "in use..." or "no camera connected" errors. You have already tried some of them, but I leave the entire list for possible use by other readers.
None of the suggestions is complicated, but the only way to find which one will work for you is to try them one-by-one until you find the one that fixes your Mac.
(0) Disconnect any unnecessary peripherals while you do your testing to rule out possible conflicts.
(1) Restart your Mac. Sometimes that is all that is required.
(2) If you use VMware Fusion to run Windows on your Mac, consider disconnecting iSight from your Virtual Machine as recommended by user "The.VCI" in this post.
(3) If you use an HP printer/scanner with your Mac, consider the "daemon" suggestions from user "parkersal" in this post.
(4) Check for any running applications, Login Items, or widgets that can use your iSight. (It is easy to forget widgets like Mirror in your Dashboard.) As explained in Apple's iSight "Your camera is in use by another application" message, iSight can be used by one application at a time.
(5) Try every suggestion re: Built-in iSight in How to Troubleshoot iSight. Be sure to include the checks for whether the problem is "application-specific" and "user-specific".
Click here if you need help creating a new user account to check whether your problem is "user-specific" during Troubleshooting.
(6) If resetting or the other troubleshooting suggestions do correct your problem, try the following:
• Backup your Home Folder, or at very least, your important files.
• Repair permissions. (Click here if you need help.)
• Then download and apply the Mac OS X 10.4.10 Combo Update v1.1 (iNtel).
• Finish with another Permissions Repair, and then check your iSight again.
Users have reported fixes to a variety of audio, video, connectivity, and software conflicts and unreliability issues after properly applying Combo Updates.
(7) Some iNtel Mac laptop users have also reported success after unplugging their Macs and leaving the battery out for half-an-hour to overnight.
(8) If none of these suggestions work, contact your retailer, Apple, or your Apple-Authorized Service Provider for professional help.

Slow performance after installing Yosemite on an older Mac is often caused by inadequate memory. Although you can install the upgrade on a Mac with 2 GB of memory, experience has shown that at least 4 GB is needed for full performance.
Select About This Mac from the Apple menu. If you have less than 4 GB of memory, and your model has upgradable memory, install as much as it can take, or at least that much. Any reputable RAM vendor will have a web form in which you can select the Mac model and be directed to compatible parts.
Memory in the MacBook Air is not upgradable. If that's what you have, you should restore the previous system from a backup, or replace the machine. Ask if you need guidance.
The Etrecheck report clearly shows that SylvieRose has a Macbook Pro, not a Macbook Air and that there are only 2 GB  RAM installed.  The Etrecheck report can be very informative if one takes the time to examine it.

I just bought a new MacBook Pro retina 15". After unboxing, I turned it on and there was no any problem. But the second time I turned it on and charge battery, I got 2 problems, 1. Should I still use it or sell it before it has more issues?

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mavericks if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
Upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion or Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Lion, or Mountain Lion installed. Purchase and download Mavericks (Free) from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
         OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
                 Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
This, Adobe Flash Player 12.0.0.70, is the current version of Flash. It should work with Snow Leopard or later.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, stoney78us
I don't use Windows, but if you get no better help here, I suggest you boot your Mac into OS X and use the suggestions in Apple's How to Troubleshoot iSight to be certain that your iSight works correctly in OS X.
If you still have trouble with your iSight in Windows although your iSight works in Mac OS X, boot back into Windows XP. Then use Windows XP > Help on your Mac or click here for the Windows Help Web Page to check whether your problem might be related to installing, configuring, or using Windows.
If the above does not help you solve your problem, or if you already know that the problem only occurs when you are using Yahoo! Messenger, check Yahoo! Messenger > Help on your Mac or click here for the Yahoo! Messenger Help Web Page. Yahoo! Help should be best the best information source on how to Troubleshoot their application on your system.
If the problem only occurs with one of your other Windows applications, and if you cannot find appropriate help for the problem in the Help pages for that application, when you post back, tell us the name and version number of the application that gives you trouble. Also tell us any new things you learn while trying the suggestions above.
Someone may be able to offer more specific suggestions based on the details in your response.

Go to Apple Menu / About This Mac. Click on More Info ... next on System Report. In the left hand column, under Hardware, select USB. The right side will show the USB Device Tree. Look through that and check for "Built-in iSight". That is your camera. If it is not listed the camera is not working.
For backlighting, try this: go to System Preferences / Keyboard. Uncheck "Adjust keyboard lighting in low light".

  • Trackpad problem on macbook pro

I have been having trackpad problems on my macbook pro (bought in 2010) for the past couple of days. Not only does it move erratically by itself, but the left click does not respond as it should. Whenever I use the left click, it works as a right click, and I have made no changes in the trackpad options. I have done a battery check through the shift and battery click option, and the response for battery came normal. I have also done a PRAM/NVRAM reset, but the problem still persists. Do I need to replace my battery? Please leave any suggestions. Thanks

I would take it in for diagnosis. It would be a guess to suggest a specific problem.

  • ISight on new MacBook Pro isn't working

I just got a brand new MacBook Pro and the built-in iSight camera doesn't appear to be working. When I initially set up the computer and tried to take my profile shot it came up blank. Now, after all installed updates from Apple, it doesn't work at all and the computer doesn't seem to recognize it's presence. I keep getting messages to the affect there's no camera attached to the computer when I open any applications that would recognize it. Photo Booth gives me an error saying it can't open because no camera is attached or the camera is in use by another application when no other application is running. iChat doesn't recognize it either. Did I receive this computer already broken? I'm quite fruastrated.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, Soxhor
Your problem may be hardware related, but until you get better suggestions from iNtel Mac users, here are some common solutions that help most avoid a visit to their Apple Service Technician.
None of the suggestions is complicated, but the only way to find which one will work for you is to try each suggestion in the list until you find the one that fixes your Mac.
    - Backup your Home Folder, or at very least, your important files.
    - Repair permissions. (Click here if you need help.)
    - Then download and apply the Mac OS X 10.4.10 Combo Update v1.1 (iNtel).
    - Finish with another Permissions Repair, and then check your iSight again.
Users have reported fixes to a variety of audio, video, connectivity, and software conflicts and unreliability issues after properly applying Combo Updates.
    (7) A few iNtel Mac laptop users have also reported success after unplugging their Macs and leaving the battery out for half-an-hour to overnight.
    (8) If none of these suggestions help, I suggest that you take your iMac to your Apple-Authorized Service Provider for a professional check.
To help others who may have the same problem, please post back which solution gets yours working again.

  • Adobe Player problem on MacBook Pro

I have both an iMac and a MacBook Pro.
I have the latest Adobe Player on both.
Using Firefox as browser on both.
Yet when trying to watch videos embedded at sites on the MacBook Pro, videos that play fine on the iMac don't play on the MacBook Pro.
For instance, both videos on this blog posting show and play on my iMac, but on the MBP this error message shows in the black video box: "The video can't be played with your current setup.  Please switch to a browser that provides natgive H.264 support or install Adobe's Flash player":  http://whyevolutionistrue.wordpress.com/2011/11/04/a-murmuration-of-starlings/
I have tried re-installing Adobe Flash Player on the MBP, but the problem persists.
I don't even know how to begin troubleshooting this, so any help appreciated.

I just tried that site.  Works ok for me.
You did remember to restart FF after installing the flash player didn't you?
    Try also installing Perian.
