Erratic mouse bahavior

Hi all,
As Arch isn't my main distro it isn't a disaster when something breaks, so I recently ran a full system upgrade to KDE 4.2 and xserver 1.5. At first my mouse and keyboard didn't work which was due to the new X hotplugging features. I decided to turn hotplugging off (as per the wiki page), which solved the keyboard issue but not the mouse. I then tried the xf86-input-evdev driver, but still my mouse shows erratic behavior, generating random click-events and frequently crashing X rather badly (i.e. requiring a hard reset). Does anyone have any idea what could cause this and how to fix it?
Thanks in advance.

Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
Dirt and debris lodged beside or under the keys, button switches, and trackpad can cause erratic operation. Or the battery may be swelling and distorting the trackpad and/or keyboard. It depends upon the model.
If you have a MacBook with a removable battery, shut down your Mac, remove the battery, reconnect the power adapter, turn the computer on, login, and see if the erratic mouse and cursor problem goes away. If the problem goes away, your battery is likely swelling. If the battery is swelling, it needs to be replaced.

  • How can I correct Unstable, erratic mouse cursor movement

I currently have a dual boot setup with Windows 7 Pro 64 and XUbuntu 64 bit XFCE desktop. On random occasions, the mouse pointer will begin to float and or will not stay positioned on the spot selected.  This occurs with or without an external mouse attached.  The track pointer will not control the mouse and neither the left nor right keys just below the keyboard function.  The drifting will stop sometimes when the center key at the bottom of the keyboard is pressed. The touchpad and its keys seem to work correctly.  I have turned off both of these in the BIOS and have not had any problems.  It seems to me that the problem may be with the keyboard. Any body have any experience with this sort of problem?

  • Ghost circles and erratic mouse behavior

I have these light colored circles in the upper to middle left part of the screen and my mouse keeps jumping to these dots and I have virtually no control of my mouse. Is there a real solution to this problem as I have already hundreds of posts about it but no apparent actual fix.

  • Erratic Mouse and Keyboard issues...with weird console log...

    Hello All,
I recently installed Snow Leopard on my 2x2.8 Quad Core Mac Pro following a boot drive melt down. Apple replaced the drive via Apple Care and I re-installed all my apps. The only additional item of note is I have Lycom SATA four port card that required a driver update.
Since setting up this machine with the new OS I am having massive issues with keyboard lag, erratic mouse movement and intermittent freezing.
I've run tech tools deluxe and everything passes with that app. I cant find the original install disks so running AHT on this machine isn't going to happen.
I've tried with and without the driver and the issue seems to still be there.
On a whim I opened console and I am seeing this message hundreds and hundreds of times over...

Anyone got any thoughts on this?

If not, I still think you have a HW issue.  It is relatively consistant, too.  Like something is breaking down - physically.  Not a disk - BIOS... notherboard... something that holds everything together.

You could run some Diagnostics.  The UEFI Diagnostics, if you don't already have them on your system, are very good and provide a decent "human interface".

  • Erratic mouse movement

When using my USB IR mouse or a magic mouse the cursor suddenly jumps about the screen often to a "Hot corner" which turns the display off. I do not recall that this occurred before I loaded Bootcamp and Windows XP Pro.
    Any help out there?

I've seen this happen for two reasons.
1.) My imac is about to overheat and crash. The pointer seems to jump around the edges of the screen and on rare occasion reservse themselves. UP=DOWN LEFT=RIGHT..etc.
2.) The mouse picked up a hair and the IR light is bouncing off of it and causing erratic movement. (More often the case)
Hopefully 2, but be mindful of 1. I would be curious if you have iStat and notice any difference in operating temperature during these times.

  • Observing many computers causes erratic mouse movements on client macs

    hi!
I administer a mac lab and when I select all the computers in the class to observe, the student mouses move erraticly.
do you guys ever encounter this problem ?
    thanks for your help.
    macs are imacs.

    Got it !
While waiting for Apple to come up with a bug fix (if they ever do, since it probably affects only french users.)
You can always copy the RFBMultiObserveWindow.nib folder from the English.lproj to the French.lproj... (After having made a copy of the original NIB folder first of course...) And this fixes that...
I have noticed no localization aberration while doing this.
    Good luck !

  • Please Help: Problems with erratic mouse

I am running Snow Leopard 10.6.7 and just recently started experience erratic behaviour from my magic mouse. I have read countless forums that document this issue - its a known thing. It honestly drove me insane to the point that I completely formatted my 27" iMac and got back up to 10.6.7 - after installing the magic mouse software again, the SAME behaviour happened. I tried changing the channels at which my airport extreme broadcasts my wireless signal throughout the house - no luck.
I even switched over to my wired keyboard and Mighty Mouse - and you wouldn't believe it, but I am also experience this subtle jerkiness with the mouse - the cursor will get laggy when dragging from side to side, or up and down - definitely noticeable since I have been using mac's for 6 years now. I am absolutely blown away by this sudden phenomenon and have no explanation for it. My desk surface is fine (since it worked for years before hand). Both lenses on the mice have been blown out by a dust blower, they are clean.
I am about to lose my mind. Any ideas?

I am having the same problem. It started about 2 weeks ago and it drives my completely nuts. Even my wired mouse does have a noticeable lag. I use a lot of Photoshop and jerkiness is very annoying and it slows me down.
Anybody has an idea why this is happening?

  • Erratic mouse behavior

I have a MacPro running Leopard 10.5.8. Yesterday the mouse began behaving erratically. It seems to be perpetually trying to scroll down. It also won't allow me to select anything. The keyboard appears to be unaffected. I have tried 2 other manufacturers mouses and the same problem persists. I can only conclude it is some sort of software issue. The problem does not exist when I'm in Bootcamp running Windows XP. Anybody have any ideas?

Well, I tried that and it didn't work. I also uninstalled the Intellipoint (Microsoft) software that was controlling the mouse and that didn't work either. I've now got my wired Apple mouse attached to my Apple aluminum keyboard which is attached to my MacPro. Still no luck. It continues to behave very strangely. Any other ideas out there?

  • Erratic Mouse Clicking

I have an iBook G4/933. Mouse click will work sometimes after booting up but only briefly and loses function seemingly without any pattern. I have booted with a Tiger disc and the mouse click works briefly, if at all, regardless of internal or external mouse. Have managed to repair permissions and repair hard disk while booted from CD. Have used an external "known good" Apple USB mouse and doesn't help. Have also zapped PRAM and reset PMU multiple times and no help. I can't blame a faulty OS install if the mouse isn't functioning properly while booted from Tiger install disc. If the internal clicker is to blame and is bad, would that also disable an external USB mouse click? I'm really stumped on this one and any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
There is an Apple article that might be of help:
    Portables: Jumpy or erratic trackpad
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=17228
See if any of the suggestions in this article are helpful.
I don't know to what extent trackpad problems would affect the external mouse. But you could go to System Preferences>Keyboard and Mouse>Trackpad and check the box that says "Ignore trackpad when mouse is present" and see if that will at least let you use an external mouse.
Please post back if none of this helps.
    Good luck!

  • Erratic mouse response

Having mouse behavior problems which started about a week ago. Running an iMac 2.8 GHz. intel  core 2 duo with OS 10.6.8. The mouse ( Bluetooth) behaves erratically - skips, drags on its own, responds extremely slowly, then resumes normal behavior spontaneously. System prefs says the battery is 100%, Bluetooth says everything is connected. I have cleaned the reader window with Q-tips but the problem persists. Does anyone in this community have any suggestions for me on what else I can do to correct this?
Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Want to add what has been unsucc tried the last day: Completely de-installed QT and iTunes, cleaned with MSI clean-Up-Utility 2, cleaned registry, restarted pc, installed QT stand alone, restarted pc, installed iTunes - and guess what: did not help!
Apple makes me really mad - going to kick out this crap...
Does anybody have the 6.x installation files?

  • Erratic mouse behaviour

On connecting to Xserve via ARD mouse control is erratic.
Double click on volume, opens in middle of screen, click on title bar to move window and entire volume window jumps to left of scteen - I view by LIST and can only see the info column KIND.
If I connect to a different Xserve, no problem - behaves as one would expect.
I have rebooted xserve 1 hoping that might have cleared the problem - no, still the same.
So,,, more of a problem with Xserve 1? Mouse OK with Xserve 2, and local workstation...
    Any thoughts?
Message was edited by: BrendanK for spelling

This was only apparent on the distant server's screen - when I moved from the remoye screen to the laptop I was using to control the server, all was OK, slide across to server window and the windows of open folders would move FAR more than my mouse movement warranted...
Jump so far to left of remote screen that close , minimise, restore buttons were off screen?! and evert time the mouse touched titlebar, would jump further to the left untill lost to sight!?

  • Erratic mouse/freezing curser

My Pro Mouse has been jumpy/erratic for some time- using it on a white sheet of paper seems to help but now have new problem; recently downloaded upgrade to 10.4.8. Since doing so the mouse goes erratic then curser freezes on screen - curser does not move (stays an "arrow") and will not respond to keyboard or mouse. Shut down and restart fixes problem, sometimes for hours, sometimes only for a few minutes, then problem returns. Now freezes a half dozen times in a few hours of use.
    any suggestions?
    thanks

    Thanks Bill for the update.
Actually, I rxd the new iMac 20" Intel Core Duo about a week ago, and until now, it is running perfectly and the mouse/keyboard problem has not cropped up. I have been checking the Forums and one "school" of thought points at a USB problem. Indeed, what Apple talks about in
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303701
may in fact be related to the problem I have been having.
So, if my new iMac starts behaving badly, I will first try the advise on the link above.
I do realize that yours is not a Intel Core Duo, and therefore I am not sure if things are a bit different for you.
    Again, thanks for the response.

  • IMAC and external screen--screen flickering and erratic mouse behavior

I have purchased a screen Medion 25.5 inch to connect it to my IMAC 27 inch.
I have noticed two unexpected behaviours:
    - from time to time, after the IMAC comes out of the SLEEP mode, the external screen is flickering, I need to put the IMAC to sleep one or several times before the display of the external screen becomes stable.
    - since I connected the external screen, the behavior of the mouse is highly erratic, eg when I move the mouse by a fraction of a millimeter, the display of the mouse pointer moves by half a screen, or even disappears completely. I have performed many tests, with several apple mice, a Dell mouse and a Microsoft mouse. As soon as I completely disconnect the screen (not only power the screen down) the mouse works normally again. I have now decided to stop using the external screen until a software update resolves the situation.
    Any advice?
    Patrick

When my 2008 24" iMac started to die from overheating, two of the symptoms I would see would be white flickering from the bottom going about half way up, like it was going blank and repainting the screen over and over. Also, the mouse pointer would jump erratically to all the edges and corners of the screen. After a few seconds, it might recover or it might freeze. I would use a program like iStat Pro to see what your temps are when you attach that screen. I suspect it may be excess heat due to the GPU now pushing two screens instead of 1?
Also try diags, and all those reset thingies people keep mentioning over and over.

  • Erratic mouse double-click problem (OS or Motherboard?)

    I have a MacBook
    MacBook4,1 / Intel Core 2 Duo  2,4 GHz (2Gb RAM)
I have two mice: Microsoft Wireless Mobile Mouse 3000 v2.0 (bough lately) and a Logitech M-BT-96a (simple 2 buttons with wheel)
I don't know if it is after upgrading to Snow Leopard (10.6.8) but one or the other are causing unwanted double-clicks!
I downloaded Lion but didn't install yet.
The trackpad act also funny especialy with touching to create clicks and double-clicks. I tough first it was because I press to heavely on each side of the trackpad… I changed my position: Same thing.
I have two USB hubs daisy chained. Even when I'm unplugging them… It does the same thing.
    Thanks for your help

As best as I can recall, my original eMac mouse lasted maybe a year before both the mouse tracking and the button contact switch began to act erratically. The button contact can wear out. If you still have your original eMac mouse, you've done an amazing job of treating it gently (maybe you can give me lessons --- I end up replacing mice every 2 years or so!).
Can you try another USB mouse? Any third-party three button USB mouse will work as a basic three-button mouse without needing any additional software to be loaded; e.g., the Logitech Prefernce Pane offers more control over features of their mice, but you can do without it and just plug the mouse in.

  • Erratic Mouse pointer

Hi Guys i am new to mac i just bought one, can you help. My mouse pointer seems to intermittently dart off to the corners of the screen now and again. I have the optical usb mighty mouse, can it be faulty or does it not like my mouse mat??? i have tried it with different user profile and safe mode.
    Thanks in advance
    Keith
imac 20" core duo   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I used to have problems with my optical mice jumping around on the screen. Apple's optical mice are very sensitive about changes in the texture of the surface they are on. Patterns need to be very consistent, and very regular.
I finally found my cure. It was a WowPad.
    http://www.microthin.com/prod_wowpaddesigns.htm
I purchased the "Dots 007" pad. It's the grey colored pad.
Since getting this pad, My mouse has been very well behaved.
I think it was $5 or $10 at Office Depot in Seattle Washington.
I'm not in Washington, but I purchased it while visiting last year. I like the pads that are very thin like paper. And, I couldn't find any in Alaska (my stores quit stocking thin pads).
Further, I like them to be firm (not the spongy rubber).
So, in my quest for a paper-thin, firm, and optical compatible pad, I looked everywhere. Finally, the last store I went to, I found it.
I looked all over Alaska, and all over Washington (while driving around), and was about to give up. But, I got lucky and found one at the Office Depot store. So, I purchased a handful of them to keep me stocked-up.
Anyway, look at your local Office Depot. If they don't have them, consider ordering one from the website I listed.
    Hope this helps you out.
