Erratic "place image" behavior in InDesign CS6

If you have a frame selected and then hit Command-D (place), sometimes the incoming image gets placed in the selected frame (as it should), and sometimes the cursor becomes a loaded cursor and the image is not placed.
Also, if you have a loaded cursor and then cancel the Place by hitting escape or selecting another tool, the next time you try to place an image, the previous image will also be loaded along with the new one. Are these bugs in CS6?

Have you tried restoring your preferences?

  • Image Placed into InDesign CS6 appears reversed/missing

    I am using InDesign CS6 on Windows 7, 64-bit.
I have worked in InDesign off and on for the past three years and have never experienced this problem before. I have always placed images into InDesign with no problem and now I have this *one* image that won't place correctly, after placing two images in the same fashion.
The original image (JPEG) was opened in Photoshop CS6. I removed the background. Changed to CMYK. Saved as .TIFF, preserved as transparency. Then placed in InDesign.
It either shows up "Reversed", like this (no transparency when saving as a TIFF in Photoshop first):
Or just kinda outlined, like this (saving as a TIFF with a transparency in Photoshop first):
I can't see the image. It prints this way, too.
I've tried other images, they are all fine. I always place TIFFs with no problem, so I'm really stumped here.
I've tried placing as a .PSD, .EPS and .TIFF and nothing works. The two other images to the left of the weird one were placed in the same way with no problems.
    Any ideas?

OMG. THAT WORKED. I have lost two hours of my life trying to figure that out. I am forever thankful to you!!!
    Here's the settings that WORKED:

  • Import/Place .odt files in Indesign CS6

    Hi,
Can we place/import .odt files in Indesign CS6? If yes, how?
Or do we need to convert them into other specific word formats so that the content & styles remain the same.
    Thanks.

    Save as Word file.
InDesign can't import ODF files - so you'll have to use a format or application that does support.
I don't know if the index entries are kept when going from ODF to Word.

  • Automatically place images within multiple InDesign documents

I work for a publishing company of agricultural trade magazines and work on few titles each month. We are trying to streamline our production procedures and previous company I worked for had a script they used to place images within text pages by searching for the file name, however there were some limitations with this script (it would only work within 1 InDesign document and only within 1 InDesign story at a time). The company I am with now breaks out each editorial story into separate InDesign files and we place image boxes when the display ads are going to go. For our purposes now, I am looking for a script that, once all of the image boxes were tagged with the image file names, could search between multiple InDesign documents in a folder and automatically place all the images for us. Is anything like this available or able to be created? If so, would it have the capacity to search between multiple InDesign documents and search the entire document for the image file names? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Hi Kasyan,
They were tagged using a program called Pathways created by a computer programmer the company used at the time. The issues that I was working on were annual Buyers' Guides so they were mainly just listings and inline graphics. The kinds of issues I work on now are monthly issue with various stories and no inline graphics, but display advertisements. And each story is created and laid out in a separate InDesign document. So I would need a script that can search an entire group of documents for file names and/or image boxes instead of just in one story in one document for inline graphics. (sorry if this is confusing).
I currently do not have a script to work from and am looking for something new that can be used to save use the time of placing every ad manually.
Thanks for your help and feedback!

  • Relinking image files in Indesign CS6 library

I have a customer that has created more than 300 page templates stored as libary files. They are distributing the library across multiple properties in their organization and  in each instance, on the "other" servers, all images linked in the templates come up as "Broken links" when placed on a page in the new location. Hypothecically all of the imags in the original libary are linked to \\fileserverA\Images and I need to do a batch update to relink all linked items to \fileserverB\Images. I would like to find a way to do this without have to each template on to a page individually, fix the link and place back into library.  I know there is a preference that will use "most recent folder" when updating links, but i want to fix the problem globally in the Library file rather than leave it to each individual to do the right thing

Can you upload the PM file to dropbox and provide a link? Then one of us who do not seem to have this issue (at least I don't with my PM files) can take a look and perhaps convert it for you.
    Take care, Mike

  • High quality images in indesign CS6 get pixelated

I have been using indesign CS6 for a while now. Recently, when I place some images into a document, they are pixelated. They are high quality images with a high resolution. Even when I shrink it down considerably to fit in the document, it still gets pixelated. I have "view High Quality" checked & the image prints pixelated as well. When I preview the image, it looks fine. Any ideas?

Can you post a screen shot of the image placed on ID to have an idea of what you're looking at? If possible can you share a sample image via dropbox?

  • InDesign CS6 and OpenGL 1.5 / image frames grey out in INDML

    Hi everyone,
I work for a non-profit and I just upgraded to InDesign CS6 on my (signifcantly more robust) machine. Now thier (significantly wimpier) machine needs to be upgraded too as we send INDD files back and forth on a monthly basis, and both sides do edits to the file. The INDML file I export out of CS6 is greying out many of the linked photos (but not all) when they read the INDML file in with CS4.
    Two things:
    1) Upgrading the slower machine to CS6 is the place, but the hitch is that computer has a graphics card that is only OPENGL 1.5 capabale (GMA X3100). The CS6 specs state you need a card that supports OPENGL 2.0. We can't afford to replace the computer, so: I wouldn't dream of running photoshop CS6 on this old machine, but could InDesign CS6 function on OPENGL 1.5?
    2) Alternatively, why are only some of the pictures greying out in the INDML file? Can I fix this CS6 > CS4 issue without upgrading to CS6?
    Help! Thanks!

The system requirements for stand-alone ID don't mention OpenGL at all. You might want to download a trial and see how it runs.
.idml does not include any link previews (that's one of the main reasons the file is so compact). Images that are showing up on the other end must be accessible so that ID can regenerate the previews.

  • InDesign unable to Place images

I tried to submit this but it can back undeliverable. Basically, one of our iMacs, when trying to Place image, will not show files from server. All other apps work, just not ID. Running 10.9.5 with ID 8.0.2 with Mac OS Server Mavericks and WiFi using Time Capsule. All other machines are fine. Apple wiped this Mac and did a clean OS install and I installed CS6 again but the issue continues. Help
    Steps to reproduce bug:
    1. InDesign CS6, new document open, new picture box, Place, server files not viewable (files viewable in all other applications except InDesign. (Server connection WiFi using Time Capsule).
    2. Mac computer taken to Apple Store, Clean install of OS then install of CS6.
    3. Exactly the same results. 5 other Macs running same OS and software with one occasionally seeing issue.

This has been reported before by another user. I suggested you try to find the thread for a possible solution.
Basically, your OS version is much newer than the CS you are using. Problems like this are not uncommon.

  • 'No Media Found' trying to insert images on Mac OS X with InDesign CS6

Hello. I am having a problem with InDesign which has only recently happened and affects only Id. When I insert an image frame(s) and go to insert photos into them the dialogue box opens, I select my photos folder but am met with the message 'no media found'. I've searched for answers and have reset the preferences to no avail. Photoshop, illustrator and everything else works as normal with my photos folder opening to reveal all of my imagery. Does anyone have any idea? It's driving me nuts and I really don't want to have to drag all of my images into a folder that I then link to. That's just messy and duplicating files all over my computer. Any assistance would be appreciated or indeed a link to some other discussion where this has been discussed/ resolved. Apologies if so, I have searched but cannot find anything.

I have the same problem after upgrading to Photos (Yosemite 10.10.3). Indesign (CS6) has 'lost' the link to my photo library. I tried with place (istead of Cmd-D),  restarting Indesign, run Photos before running ID, but no avail.
PS en IL do show the link, Id does not..... (see pics attached)

  • I can't place images from Photos into InDesign since updating to Yosemite 10.10.3. Is this an Apple issue or an Adobe one?

I can't place images from Photos into InDesign since updating to Yosemite 10.10.3. Is this an Apple issue or an Adobe one? It used to be a simple process with iPhoto but not anymore.

Thanks Steve. I should have mentioned that I’m still using CS6. Wonder if that’s the difference? All I get in the sidebar is Photo Booth which is useless.

  • How do you Place rtf files from LibreOffice into InDesign CS6

I am new to InDesign CS6. I am having a problem Placing LibreOffice rtf files into InDesign.
I am using LibreOffice 4.3.2.2, Lotus WordPro, and Windows 7. I am saving my work in rtf files. Each page has two columns.
Placing rtf files from WordPro into InDesign works with no problems, but - I wonder just how long WordPro will continue to work with Windows 7 so I would like to switch to LibreOffice.
When I Place a rtf file that has two columns from LibreOffice into InDesign, I get a loaded text cursor, but nothing loads. I can take this same file, remove the columns so there is only one column, and it loads just as it should. Further, if I load the one column file into a Master set up for two columns, the file loads into two columns with all the proper formating.
Please guide me in how to Place the LibreOffice two column rtf files into InDesign.
      Thanks.
      Carole

Thanks to everyone who read about my problem. I have solved it myself by using "RTF Import Options."

  • I want to place an image in my InDesign document that can work with an address like this (\Resources\Thumb) rather than this (C:\Users\JSmith\Desktop\InDesign thumbnail Test\001\Resources\Thumb) is this possible?

I want to place an image in my InDesign document that can work with an address like this (\Resources\Thumb) rather than this (C:\Users\JSmith\Desktop\InDesign thumbnail Test\001\Resources\Thumb) is this possible? In a nutshell I want to point the link to an image in a directory that uses just part of the address.

I know this is something you can do in Maya with linked files. I guess InDesign just isn't there yet.
MW Design -  Yeah I think "Relative paths" is the right term! I want to create a Layout with an image in the center of the page - and then duplicate my folder structure with that file. With that, I want to replace the Linked image file with a diferent image file of the same name. In effect having multiple files of the same layout with different images.  I hope that made sense.

  • Photoshop images with spot channels in Indesign CS6 (layout question)

I've got an Indesign CS6 layout that will have a spot varnish when it goes to press. Right now I've got a layout with psd files that have spot channels in them that will be used for the spot varnish.
My question is, in Indesign when I'm laying this out should I have one layer with all the psd artwork (with no spot channels) and then a layer on top of that with the psd files with the psd layers turned off with the spot channel showing? I want to make this easy to print in the office so by doing it this way I could just turn the spot layer off and print.
Will this work for the printer?
layer 1 psd files with no spot channels
layer 2 psd files with photoshop layers turned off with the spot channel showing

Besides the obvious extra work of tracking 2 images, there would be potential problems if the images needs to be scaled and moved, and you would have to assume people downstream would know what's going on—should the layer be on or off?
I would double check with the current printer—they should know the only way to view a spot is via Sep or Output preview by turning CMYK off—magenta could just as easily be process as  spot.
Take a closer look at the Alias method. Here it is with your magenta defined SPOT VARNISH.
With SPOT VARNISH set as No Alias in Ink Manager and with Overprint turned on:
And with an additional spot color defined as white named CLEAR VARNISH. When you need to print in house alias SPOT VARNISH to CLEAR VARNISH and check Simulate Overprint in the Print dialog. You can get to Ink Manger via the Print>Output dialog or Swatches panel:
All you have to do is delete the CLEAR VARNISH before sending the job to the printer or exporting

  • Images in InDesign CS6 tables

In InDesign CS6 is there a way to define tables cells to images instead of text (like you can in QXP). My aim is to import images into cell, but I want them to fill the full cell size.

Sorry - InDesign doesn't offer that function - you'd have to set that up manually.
Give your cell 0 padding all around.
Get the measurement for your cell
Create a graphic frame that size.
And cut and paste it into the cell.

  • Images in TOC in InDesign CS6

I'm hoping someone can help me. I’m using InDesign CS6 on a Windows 8.1 Pro.
I'm busy with a book and I did anchor the grouped images (grey block and a text block) so that they move with the heading. This text is in a paragraph style. When I create my toc the images also appear in the toc, but I don't want them there. Is there a way to only have the text in my toc?
Any help on these questions is appreciated.

you can do the same thing explained in the previous post by resetting the paragraph style "Heading" with a fixed return when the lesson is with one number and another para style whenthe titles when the lesson has two digits
