Erratic scrolling

I have been using an ApplePro keyboard and a Logitec wireless mouse with my iBook.
Everything was working fine for months up until a week ago and now I'm getting erratic behavior when I'm typing text --- either doing emails, TextEdit or Appleworks.
I'll be typing along and then hit the return key to come to the next line and suddenly the page is scrolling uncontrollably and my iBook is chattering like I'm typing 80 words a minute. What's going on ? I only stops when I unplug the keyboard.
The dongle for my Logitec mouse if plugged into either my iBook or the keyboard and the keyboard is always plugged into the iBook of course. It seems to do the same behavior no matter where the mouse dongle is plugged into.
I can't find any information on what may be causing this.
I put new batteries in the mouse thinking that it may be the cause but it's doing the same thing. This is the first problem I've ever had with my iBook.

14 iBook G4 768MB; 20G iPod   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

That's an odd situation, and short of the general cure-all suggestion of
archiving your entire stuff to an external Firewire hard drive (clone the
entire computer to a partition; use a clone utility such as Carbon Copy)
and then use a booted Disk Utility from the OSX installer disc #1 and
go ahead and start over from a very blank slate. Use the disk utility
option to "zero-data" and then reformat drive to HFS+; and install it all.
[You'd clone the system from the external to get it reinstalled.]
Of course, there may be something as simple as the need to do the
basic routine maintenance and 'repair disk permissions.' Or, boot from
the OSX installer disc #1 and use Disk Utility to repair disk and also
to repair disk permissions; then boot from the hard drive. Could be the
machine is just a little confused, and depending on how long it has been
running OSX 10.3.9, it may just need some maintenance; I occasionally
use OnyX (Panther version is available, free download, from Titanium
Software online) in its Automated mode to run scheduled maintenance
and clear caches; and the other stuff you can check-box to run in there.
Another item to check is in System Preferences. With a portable computer
you may have settings accidentally set in one of several places; one place to
check may be in the "Universal Access> Keyboard> " and see if one of those
options is turned on which may make your keystrokes audible and also could
be messing up your efforts. Another may be to see if your touchpad control
is set to ignore input while you use the keyboard.
That is an odd issue, and there may be other things to check; if all the
maintenance is done routinely and before/after software installs and
system updates, you may also consider carefully looking into .plist
or preferences specific to keyboard. But I'd hope it didn't come to that.
The computer works fine without the external keyboard and mouse?
Have you tried any other Apple keyboard and mouse, too?
Best of luck.

  • Erratic scrolling of Swing scrn for jdk131

    Hi,
While upgrading my Project from ibmjdk122 to ibmjdk131, I am facing problem with Erratic scrolling of Swing screens which scrolled fine for ibmjdk122.
I replaced registerKeyboardAction() method with getInputMap() and getActionMap().
As an action is used in new method getActionMap(), I created an action using AbstractAction as mentioned by Shannon Hickey.
The problem is AbstractAction is defining a method actionperformed(), which is already defined in the same class where I am using them.
Eventhough, it is compiling, while running, it is just hanging.
Any solution how to use the existing actionperformed() method to create the required Action for getActionMap()?
or is any other way to solve this problem?
the method registerKeyboardAction() is mentioned as obsolete in jdk131 documentation, hence I feel that cud be causing the above problem.
But shd an obsolete method compile if it is no longer functional ( it compiles OK for ibmjdk131) - If No.... what is the diff betn an obsolete method & depricated method.
    Pls help.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Blank or black windows. Erratic scrolling

    Both Fire fox and Thunderbird
    Manifesting at different times
    1) Windows go blank or black.
    2) Scrolling becomes so erratic and sensitive as to be un-usable. This occurs either when rolling mouse wheel or, click and drag on window scroll bar

I had already used the safe mode to isolate to possibly Adobe Shockwave Flash. In retrospect it seems the act of restarting has more with problem correction than Flash. TBD
At your suggestion, I did disable the hardware acceleration. Updated the NVIDIA Quadro 540 driver. Found that Windows XP and NVIDIA had different opinions about what is latest. Used NVIDIAs.
I have a serious short term memory problem (my human brain). It seems initial driver date , before starting update, was newer than either windows version or NVIDIAs verson. Not sure.
Yesterday, I also went into about config and set some options to default, as opposed to user value set.
Yesterday I also changed mouse scroll increments from 1 to 4 lines
I will reply in a few dates about results

  • Erratic scrolling on my iMac with alarm

My new iMac sometimes makes the sound of an alarm bell, the curser flashes and scrolling becomes erratic. When I try to scroll down it snaps back to the top. Has anyone had this before, if so what can I do to stop it happening?

I asked about the version because Apple decided to change the name of that app to "Contacts" in Mountain Lion. But, since you're on 10.6.8, it should still be Addressbook if my memory serves me correctly.
Did you check your hard drive (search for it)? Use either Spotlight or (my choice) Find any File (third party app). Since Mail uses the database of Addressbook, have to checked it to see if it can find some people's email address?
If you've checked all of that and since that is installed as part of the OS, the only thing I can think of is to download the 10.6.8 Combo installer from Apple's website and reinstall it over the top - it should re-create it.

  • V31.0 Mac OS 10.6.8 erratic vertical scrolling; v.30.0 is fine (2 imacs)

I recently had our computers checked at Elite Mac Techs, they are both working fine under OSX 10.6.8; we are reluctant to upgrade OS because we use (and love) Eudora and are not sure if it will work well in 10.7. Anyway, when we upgraded one of the two iMacs to Firefox 31.0, the scrolling became erratic and slow, on Firefox 30.0 (and other browsers as well, doesn't matter what URL we are on), the scrolling is as smooth as can be. This erratic scrolling is most annoying, it is not a small thing to us, since we scroll nearly all the time we are on the internet. PLEASE fix this problem, thank you!!!
    --Robert

You should honestly upgrade. Not just to 10.7, but to 10.9 if your machine supports it. You will need to get off Eudora, but it's defunct anyway and has been replaced by thunderbird. https://wiki.mozilla.org/Eudora_OSE

  • The cursor and scrolling are erratic to the point of having to shut the computer down, any suggestions?

I have an imac that has erratic scrolling, it just scrolls to the bottom of the page or in whatever area the cursor is positioned at. It comes and goes and sometimes it's just best to shut the computer down to solve the issue. Any suggestions?

    Hi..

You can also force quit an app from your Apple menu top left in your screen or by using the Activity Monitor located in Applications/Utilities

  • Nomad Jukebox 3 scroll wheel prob

The scroll wheel on my Jukebox is buggered up. I put some lubricant on it from the outside (did not try and pry the machine open) and that worked for a little while. Tried the same thing again - no luck. Any instructions and/or suggestions to remedy this?

I've owned 3 nomad jukebox 3s over the past 4 years and of those three, two of them have developed the problem of having an erratic scroll wheel. Today I used radio shack switch cleaner/lubricant and it cleared up the problem with out a trace of skipping up or down. I couldn't be happier.
I did however have to open up the jukebox. there are four screws under the rubber feet and one more screw between the two battery slots. the face comes off rather easely. the lube that i bought came with a straw atachment which i recomend for controling the placment of the fluid. I sprayed a very concervati've amound of lube into the small vally that surrounds the inside of the wheel. i would turn it about /3 of a full rotation and spray a little more and then repeat. Then I rapidly turned the scroll wheel over and over till till you couldn't see much of the lube in the vally. After putting the jukebox back together and booting it up the problem seems to be compleatly fixed! Thank god, it is my favorite MP3 player and is no longer available at anywhere brand new. I hope this little mini-faq helps anyone with this problem, Aaron.

  • Do not force tablet users to use the Desktop app before it is ready

Windows 10 is set to launch on July 29. Microsoft is discontinuing Modern Skype on July 7 thus creating the following inconveniences for Windows 8.1 tablet users connected with using the Desktop app: The Desktop app is blurry due to the DPI issuesThe app slides off the screen if the app is maximized and the user scrolls to the end of any listUsers need to use the desktop virtual keyboard which is subpar in numerous aspectsUsers who primarily use the Modern part of Windows 8.1 are forced to use the desktop environmentThere is no way to see any Skype notifications without going to the Desktop which, again, the tablet users don't do very often or don't do at all Every single one of the abovementioned issues isn't minor by any means. We'd understand your decision to make users move to a better app if it was indeed a better app. Please finish the proper Windows 10 integration first (or, at the very least, wait till Windows 10 is released) and then we, the tablet users, would gladly move to a truly better experience.

Thanks for listening. A) Lenovo ThinkPad 8 tablet - Windows 8.1 x64, 8" 1920x1200 screen mostly in portrait mode with 150% zoom for desktop, equipped with LTE mobile connection (that's why Skype connected standby mode support is essential). B) All issues with the desktop version on tablet have been summarized in the first post. I will repeat them again: true optimization for touch devices - I mostly use the chat window, so no menu nor taskbar visible on main (chat) window.fix basic bugs like erratic scrolling, the sliding off main window when scrolling and missing High DPI awareness supportconnected standby support, start screen and live tile notificationssmooth integration of onscreen keyboard, again Windows Store applications can do that onlyNo desktop application on Windows 8.1 can offer the same level of experience on tablets as the existing Modern Skype (Windows Store) one does. That's why the Windows Store applications have been introduced after all. So the easiest solution for both parties is to not kill the Modern Skype app as it continues to live on Windows RT devices. As for Windows 10 upgrade and getting a new Skype universal app (if any, in the future), it does not seem to be well optimized for tablets yet so it is better to stay with very good Windows 8.1 for a while.

  • Scroll wheel erratic in Firefox 17

I'm using a Logitech Performance MX mouse and Microsoft Wireless Desktop Elite keyboard in Windows 8 64-bit and Firefox 17. All software/drivers are the latest available.
The mousewheel functions erratically; the keyboard scrollwheel doesn't operate at all. However, they do operate correctly in all other applications, including Internet Explorer. They did operate properly in Firefox 17 in Windows 7.
I have checked in about:config but there are no entries for mousewheel.withnokey at all.
Also, the forward/back buttons on the mouse do not function in FF17. Their counterparts on the keyboard operate properly. Again, those buttons do work in all other applications including IE.

There have been changes to the mousewheel prefs as the consequence of implementing DOM3 mouse wheel scrolling.
Did you check the settings in the mouse driver?
You probably need to set the Back button to Alt+Cursor Left and the Forward button to Alt+Cursor Right top make them work in Firefox.

  • Scroll bar navigation w/mouse very erratic - not good

Doing the kind of work we do, we navigate around imagery @ high magnifications using the scroll bars on the bottom and right side of a floating image window. I just discovered that this single-click-moves-one-screen view behavior that we have grown to depend on in every previous version of PS is broken/erratic/not reliable at all in CS6.
On my pc I'm using a Logitech G500 gaming mouse with programmable sensitivity, so I thought that might be the problem. But my coworkers (we have 5 additional CS6 installs at the moment, all up to date) using standard Dell mice are encountering the exact same problem - if you do not tap the left click with just the right pressure the screen will advance TWO places - or sometimes not at all. A normal mouse click will advance the screen two places. My pc has a different video card that the rest as well, and I've tried the basic, normal advanced and no GPU support NO change in this behavior.
This is a real deal breaker AFA getting CS6 integrated into our shop. I can grudgingly put up with some of the pointless UI changes made in this version, but to have such a basic and essential navigation tool busted 'out of the box' on 6 different computers is totally unacceptable.
    Any help would be appreciated...

Sorry, didn't see your thread until now.
If you click on a scroll bar in Photoshop CS6 it will immediately repeat without waiting the normal amount of time before repeating, which yields multiple page scrolls.
This seems to be a departure from more or less standard UI behavior of the past, where there is a slight delay before the repeat starts - though Photoshop isn't the only application to do it (Internet Explorer is another offender).  It's been known since Photoshop CS6 was first released.  I believe it may even have been reported in the public beta.  I wouldn't bet that this isn't the intended behavior.
A workaround is to click the mouse right next to the scroll thumb, which will result in a one page scroll operation.
Note:  It may be that a configurable delay value somewhere in the system is affecting the timing.  I have purposefully shortened several delays on my system to make it more responsive, so what I'm seeing may not be what people see in the general case.
    -Noel
P.S., I can pretty consistently reproduce the problem where it won't scroll at all by clicking in the scroll bar (causing a page scroll), then clicking again soon thereafter.
P.P.S., I just re-tested:  I can reproduce the expected behavior, including a short (near half second) initial delay and consistent response to clicking with Photoshop CS5 on this same system.  Photoshop CS6 definitely degrades the scrolling experience.

  • HT203171 Track pad is erratic, sometimes scrolling without touching the pad. Also highlighting chunks of my Thesis with the touch of a finger. Frustrating because I have accidentally deleted during this out of control mechanism with the track pad.

My Mac Book Air has developed an erratic process with the track pad. Sometimes the page scrolls without touching the pad, great chunks of my Thesis can be highlighted and sometimes I delete without realising. Does anyone else have this problem. The Tech wants to replace my track pad today, not sure what to do?

  • Since I updated to 6, my mouse wheel scrolling has become erratic, and, depending of the text size on the web page, either moves only a few lines each turn or moves several pages instead of one page as it did before on every tab. how do I fix this?

Is this a glitch or is it something to do with compatibilty?

yes, it is still happening, though I've gotten better at ignoring it.
my touchpad, i think, is an elan ps/2 port smartpad and my mouse is a microsoft basic optical mouse v2, both componants are working correctly and have the latest driver update installed.
The difference between img 1 and 2 is one scroll wheel turn down. In image 3 I have decreased the view using control - (minus) and in image 4 I have scrolled down one turn of the wheel. you can see that instead of a full page turn, like between img1 and 2, it only moves about 2/3's of the screen down. As every tab seems to have a different text size, the amount of scroll turn changes between tabs, sometimes varying as much as several pages each scroll turn.
One thing I have noticed, is that the vertical scrolling speed on my mouse settings changes the amount the pages moves when turning the wheel. This only seems to change when in firefox. changing this while using word has no effect on the page movement in word. Increasing the vertical scrolling speed will make the scroll turn move further.
I have adjusted the scroll settings in options, and no adjustment of settings, (autoscrolling on/off, smooth scrolling on/off in and combinations of off/on) has made this error stop occurring. I have checked for malware etc, no issues. This happened from the instant I upgraded to FF6, so I think there is a corrolation there.

  • Scrolling is painful and erratic!

When I scroll a page, there is an inconsistent delay in the response.
I am running Firefox 27.0.1 on a brand new Windows 8.1 machine. Scrolling on the touchpad or with a mouse wheel will usually (but sometimes not) give a delay or a jump to the new page position. When I use the touchscreen to scroll, there is no issue.
I have tried many, many things to fix: "restart with add-ons disabled," periodically closing firefox to clear out the memory, unchecking smooth scrolling option, about:config options (mousewheel.pixel, general.smoothscrool.mousewheel.durationmaxms/minms, etc), and "reset firefox" to make sure I didn't tweak too many things.
I've checked other browsers while firefox is having this issue--the other browsers IE and Chrome don't have this problem.
Please help! I really rather use ff than another browser. But the scrolling is bad enough to make me ready to leave ff.

Any other thoughts? Scrolling is still inconsistent...
