Erratic spotlight behaviour

Hi all,
Spotlight is behaving very erratically, and it's driving me nuts! I use Hazel, a tool which watches folders and performs actions automatically when new files are added. This (sensibly) uses the spotlight index to detect new/changed files. Unfortunately spotlight does not index all files correctly. I am looking at an example right now, where there are two .mp3 files in a folder, all of the details are the same between the two files, except the track name and file name (e.g. they are two tracks from the same album). One, I can find in spotlight and hence it has triggered my Hazel rule, the other, I cannot find in spotlight and is undetected by Hazel. The files in questions are located on a FAT32 USB hard disk
I've just ran "mdiutil -E" on the drive in question, and it has now picked up the missing file, but I've done that previously so obviously doesn't fix the issue, just builds a one-time, correct index.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Jon

I've had this problem with slight variations since Tiger. Various solutions have been posted, as you've listed, but none have ever worked for me.
This bug really cripples Mail--I've used emails as my personal database for about 15 years, kind of a history log that required zero effort, which worked great in Eudora but Eudora isn't being supported anymore.
After updating to X.5.5, I can search "entire message" for "All Mailboxes" and find everything including emails in the mailbox I was viewing (often finds 60,000 occurences, but doesn't take very long--it's just incredibly tedious to find the one I want from such an enormous set of results). I can also find everything using Spotlight, outside of Mail. But if I am looking at any mailbox, like Inbox, and click on the name of that mailbox to restrict the search to it, then search "entire message" never finds anything at all. Searching for subjects etc works fine.

  • Erratic battery behaviour on Macbook air since latest update

My Macbook Air 11.1 is from 2011, and the battery started going bad last year. I ordered and placed a new battery in january. This worked perfectly, no problems whatsoever. This morning, I installed the latest available Apple update (unsure which one, can't find it). After that, my battery has been behaving strangely. This is what happened:
    - I unplugged my laptop at one point, and moved it from my bed to desk. I went to my kitchen, returned, and the laptop had turned off.
    - I put the charger in and turned it back on. I realised the battery info said the battery isn't charging and 'replace now'. Surprised, since I just got the battery this january.
    - All of a sudden, the icon changed to white (it's black when not charging) and it was charging again.
    - This kept happening, on and off.
    - Unplugging the charger results in shutting of immediately or within a few seconds. At this moment, it's charging (at 97%). But it can change any minute.
    - I tried moving my laptop around a bit, tilting it up and down, but that doesn't seem to do anything (neither good or bad).
I looked on the internet for a few solutions:
    - Resetting PRAM: no differene
    - Resetting SMC: no difference
    - Reinstalling Yosemite completely (do you recommend this? In any specific order?)
Does anyone know what is best to try? I can also open up my laptop again and check the battery, but I doubt that's the problem. Btw, third party apps like battery diag/battery health/coconut battery all make no mention of the battery needing to be replaced.
Any help is greatly appreciated. I'm emigrating to Serbia next week, so I hope to fix it before then
    I included an Etrecheck report:

    Hi Dominic,
Thank you for your help! I did all three things and run etrecheck again. It now shows the following, different things seem to be failing now? Like Kerberos?

(My suspicion is that the tiny antenna inside the
Mini is not as robust in dealing with marginal signal
conditions as the larger antennas in all the other
    Mac products
There is, in fact, a reasonable consistency of reports indicating exactly that with the Mac mini. The supposition has commonly been that the nature of the mini's casing has an impact on signal, which seems reasonably possible and would account for lowered sensitivity, less reliable operation in marginal signal conditions, and higher susceptibility to interference.
Though it has to be said that Becca's situation should not, either by range or apparent signal strength, be marginal - particularly not when previous tests have been conducted with the mini in close proximity to the base station.
-- although I'm still open to the
possibility that current airport software in Macs is
less tolerant of some non-Apple routers.
The minis (and other wireless devices) I have in service in the network are variously connected via an Airport Extreme base station, an Airport Express and Belkin and Lexmark WAPs. Range varies between 15 and 55 feet and I've moved various wireless devices around to experiment. In the course of doing this I've noted marginally better signal stability at the 55 foot range between a mini and the Airport Extreme base station, but no real difference in signal quality between any of them.

  • Erratic save behaviour in Yosemite?

Hello, I was wondering if anyone else is having this problem . Where I work we use a lot of shared inDesign files and since getting a new Mac running Yosemite, I run into an erratic save problem a lot. Most of my job involves step and repeat for layouts and when I've finished preparing the file for printing or printing it as well, ID won't let me save over the old version. It prompts me to save as, and we don't want multiple versions of a job filling up the server. I like the fact that ID saves color mgmt. info, but this behaviour is a hassle. It doesn't happen with every file either, I can't determine beforehand if it is going to save or not.

But this is really happening since I got the new Mac. It's always happened to some degree so I can accept your view, but it's frustrating. Especially when I get the dialog " cannot save...it's being used' I'm trying to save the changes but ID wants to create a new file Grrrrrr

  • Erratic mouse behaviour

On connecting to Xserve via ARD mouse control is erratic.
Double click on volume, opens in middle of screen, click on title bar to move window and entire volume window jumps to left of scteen - I view by LIST and can only see the info column KIND.
If I connect to a different Xserve, no problem - behaves as one would expect.
I have rebooted xserve 1 hoping that might have cleared the problem - no, still the same.
So,,, more of a problem with Xserve 1? Mouse OK with Xserve 2, and local workstation...
    Any thoughts?

This was only apparent on the distant server's screen - when I moved from the remoye screen to the laptop I was using to control the server, all was OK, slide across to server window and the windows of open folders would move FAR more than my mouse movement warranted...
Jump so far to left of remote screen that close , minimise, restore buttons were off screen?! and evert time the mouse touched titlebar, would jump further to the left untill lost to sight!?

  • No more 'full charge' icon and erratic battery behaviour

    I have a 40g 3G, thirteen months old, and it's going nuts.
Two weeks ago it stopped showing the 'full charge' icon when charging, it just goes on and on and on, either with AC or Firewire. The meter in the screen is numerical, and it never goes over 500. This means about five hours continuous play, unless I need to fiddle with the songs: the moment the hard drive spins again, the meter loses some 100 volts, picking them up again in a few seconds. Trouble is, when the meter goes under 200 the iPod screen shows the 'no battery power left' on the screen (not the icon, the message), then goes dead.
I tried resetting a million times, I even restored it. No use. I left it for a week to kill the battery off, but it just doesn't really ever die! The moment I click, the Apple logo comes out, but the moment the HD starts spinning, it all dies.
I went on doing this for days... please tell me I'm the one going nuts.

  • Erratic Powerbook behaviour

    Hi,
I've been experiencing very strange power issues with my Powerbook. I have reset the pmu, pram, permissions, the whole lot. As of today, the machine won't even power up. It does not respond to me pressing the power button. I have removed the extra ram, and the airport card, and still nothing. i have swapped the battery, and still nothing. The funny thing is, when the notebook is plugged in (and powered off), the power indicator turns amber to indicate that the battery is charging. However, when i press the controlshiftoption keys (as if i were about to reset the pmu) the light turns green, WITHOUT me touching the power button. It is like the power button is pressed ALL the time. When I am able to get the powerbook to boot up, out of nowhere, after using the machine for a short while (10.4.8) the power/down/restart dialogue appears (as if i had pressed the power button). I can hit "cancel" but it immediately comes back, and then the notebook turns off, without any further warning, like what happens when you hold down the power button for 5 seconds. Again, it's as if, out of nowhere the machine "thinks" i am holding down the power button, even when i am not... Anybody else experience anything like this???

well i figured it out if anyone cares:
the cable that runs underneath the top chassis that connects the power button with the logic board somehow got slightly unplugged from it's socket on the logic board. i removed the keyboard, and made sure the connector was firmly inserted. somehow, by being "half" connected, the button had shorted itself, and was permanently "pressed." Therefore, actually pressing the button had no effect.
im just posting this answer here, because it may help someone in the future. thanks

  • Erratic preloader behaviour in IE

  • Spotlight doesnt' index

On both my old iBook and my new iMac, Spotlight doesn't work on the HDs (but works on any connected USB drive), Google Desktop doesn't work either ("no indexing"). Putting/deleting the HDs in the privacy part of Spotlight Preferences doesn't change anything...
Cocktail <http://cocktail.en.softonic.com/mac> says "unable to detect Spotlight indexing status. iBook is not accessible, read-only or mdutil (/usr/bin/mdutil) is not working properly."
Is there any Terminal lines of code that could explore/change Spotlight behaviour? I tried "mdutil -pEsa [-i on] volume /" without any success...

I just happen to find a solution: Spotlight is currently indexing my HD!
    Here is the solution
    <http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7063635> :
I have tried most of the recommendations here - and finally even reinstalled and rolled back my entire PB from Time Machine this night - but Spotlight did not work. Got message in terminal "Indexing and searching disabled".
Solution found on web - below with 2 elements:
    1) Need to remove files that block for indexing
    2) Turn on indexing - Thanks to Patrick Kinsella
    1) Check your root directory for a file called ".metadataneverindex"
    If it's there, delete it.
You can only find it after making invisible files visible (se below)
    2) These great hints won’t work if Spotlight is completely disabled (which some people have tried and don’t know how to reverse). If all else fails, follow this procedure:
Make hidden files visible (copy and paste the next line into Terminal:"defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool YES" [or use Onyx or alikes]
!!!You need to know that the visible/invisible switch works only after a relaunch of Finder (via Command-Alt-Esc).
Now in (previously hidden) /etc folder in your root/hard drive, find "hostconfig~", and open it with any text editor. Does it include this line:"SPOTLIGHT=-YES-" (note the two dashes astride YES)? If not, type this line at the bottom. Save the file as "hostconfig~" in your root folder (etc folder won’t accept it from a text editor). Now drag and drop this new hostconfig to /etc. This requires your admin password to replace the existing "hostconfig~".
Reboot, and your spotlight is working. This may be a long way around, but it worked for me.
Now make invisibles invisible again with this line in Terminal: "defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool NO" [or use Onyx or alikes]
To fire up Spotlight, you may need to type this into Terminal: "sudo mdutil -i on /" (the slash is important)
If Mail is still not searching inside Entire Message, type this into Terminal to index your old messages:"sudo mdimport /users/YOURNAME/library/mail [or whatever the path to your mailbox message folders]".
The combination of these two did the trick for me.

  • Spotlight can't find iPhoto 6 keywords

    Hi,
I've got Tiger 10.4.4 installed with iPhoto 6. I've keyworded some of my photos in iPhoto but I can't search on them with Spotlight. To attempt to address this I've tried the following with no joy:
    - Added my hard disk to the privacy window in Spotlight preferences and removed it.
    - Renamed the ~/Pictures/iPhoto Library/iPhoto.ipspot file to force a rebuild (which it did).
    - Reindexed the ~Pictures folder in spotlight via Terminal
    - Added a dummy keyword to all photos then forced a Spotlight reindex
After all this it still isn't working. Anyone with any ideas as to how to remedy this situation?
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

For what it's worth, Payton, my Spotlight still functions the same as yours did, and has for as long as 10.4 has been around: double-clicking a photo from either of Spotlight's results areas - separate window or menu bar list - opens that photo in iPhoto, maximised, if Spotlight knows that photo to be in iPhoto (obvious from it being located in your iPhoto Library folder). Preview is also my default application for all images.
Note that selecting the same image in the Finder will open it with the default application and not iPhoto; but then as we all know by now, don't tamper with files in the iPhoto Library folder.
This Spotlight behaviour makes sense to me, as having Spotlight open an iPhoto image in anything other than iPhoto is going directly against the don't tamper adage. Say you open an iPhoto image from Spotlight into Preview; there you make colour changes, crop it a little, and resave; you've instantly 'tampered' with the iPhoto library as iPhoto no longer reflects the actual state of that file. You may simply be interested in harmlessly viewing the image but as iPhoto is designed to be the 'guardian of all images it contains' it's logical for it to step in when one of its photos is being checked out.
Having said all that, I can't suggest why your Spotlight-result images are now opening with Preview..! Despite my post above, where I fixed my "(i)Photos not showing up in Spotlight" problem, I've only just noticed that the problem has in fact returned, and Spotlight has 'forgotten' ALL keyword data up until about that point where I had fixed it (and had it working...). Only photos added since then show up in searches, despite using the same keywords etc. I despair, sometimes...
Just a thought, but I presume you didn't also delete the iPhoto.ipspot file earlier, did you?

  • Spotlight fails to search at HFS drive in optibay

    Hello
Recently i noticed that Spotlight behaviour is very strange - it fails to find some files in the folder, while other files from the same folder are found easily. Examples are shown on the pics.
in first case it fails finding ''Empire of the sun'' folder, while folder ''Metronomy'' is found. In second case it finds folder ''Aquarius heaven ***" while fails to find its parent folder - ''ELECTRONIC''
Indexing is on, i also reindexed that drive, but it doesn't help.
need help very much, as all my music is on that drive and i can't find anything(

I had to re-index after Spotlight completed it's upgrade indexing.
    sudo mdutil -E /
or drag your HDD into Spotlight privacy pane and then remove. Indexing will start up and a new data store will be created.
This solved my partial search issues. Unless, of course, you just need to be patient.

  • Cursor behaving erratically

Since a few days back I am having a issue with my cursor. The little arrow seems to have life of its own. The cursor jumps across de screens sometimes even performing clicks.
I have a Macbook Pro Retina with Maverick 10.9.1 installed.
How can I fix this issue?
    Thank you,
    D

    Hello Diegooriani,
It sounds like you are getting some erratic cursor behaviour on your MacBook Pro. I recommend taking a look at the following information from the article named:
Portables and Magic Trackpad: Jumpy or erratic trackpad operation
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1449
The Apple Magic Trackpad and built-in trackpads on Apple portable computers work on a principle called coupling capacitance. As your finger moves over the surface, the trackpad evaluates the change in capacitance between two layers of measurement electrodes built into the surface of the trackpad and translates that to cursor movement.
Verify only one part of your finger is touching the pad. You cannot use a pen or other object--the trackpad is designed to work only with your finger. Also confirm that you are not resting your wrist on or very close to the pad. The trackpad may interpret this as your finger touching it and make the cursor move in that direction. If you suspect either of these is causing the cursor's behavior, try raising your wrist in the air and touch the pad with only the tip of your finger. If the symptom goes away then, you know that one of the above is the cause, and you should adjust the position of your wrist or finger.
If you have sweaty hands or if moisture collects on the pad, this may also confuse the trackpad. Wiping off the trackpad with a cloth or tissue usually fixes this issue. If the issue goes away when a piece of paper is put between the finger and trackpad you may want to consider purchasing a Teflon applique to fit over the pad to prevent the moisture from having direct contact with the trackpad. Before installing the Teflon applique, confirm the trackpad is clean and dry. You can use a mild glass cleaner sprayed onto the cloth, not onto the trackpad itself to clean the trackpad.
Oil or lotion can also cause the same issue. Do not use hand lotion, or consider purchasing a Teflon pad to protect the trackpad. Before installing the Teflon pad, confirm the trackpad is clean and dry.
Jewelry may also cause interference. Try removing rings or bracelets and see whether the jumpy or erratic behavior disappears.
Apple has had some reports of this behavior related to power supplies made by a third party company. If you are using one of these power adapters, unplug it and try running from the Apple battery to see how the trackpad behaves. Also try using the Apple AC adapter instead of the third-party AC adapter. If the trackpad behaves normally while running from the Apple battery or adapter, there is most likely an issue with your third-party adapter.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,
    Sterling

  • Ghost circles and erratic mouse behavior

I have these light colored circles in the upper to middle left part of the screen and my mouse keeps jumping to these dots and I have virtually no control of my mouse. Is there a real solution to this problem as I have already hundreds of posts about it but no apparent actual fix.

Hello , Welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience! To help you get the most out of the HP Forums I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More. I have read your post on how ghost circles and erratic mouse behaviour appear on the screen of your desktop computer, and I would be happy to assist you in this matter! To correct this issue, I recommend following the steps in this document on HP All-in-One PCs - Troubleshooting Touch Screen Issues (Windows 8). This should help return the functionality to your touch screen. I also suggest following the steps in this document on HP PCs - Wireless Keyboard and Mouse Troubleshooting, which should help correct the intermittent cursor behaviour. If the circles still appear, and the mouse still behaves erratically, I recommend returning your system back to a previous restore point before the issue occurred. This can be done by following the steps in this document on Using Microsoft System Restore (Windows 8).
Should the problem continue, I suggest performing a backup and recovery of your operating system. This can be done by following the steps in this resource on Backing Up Your Files (Windows 8), as well as Performing an HP system recovery (Windows 8). This should return your system back to factory defaults.
