Erratic trackpad when ethernet plugged in

Hi,
I've got a brand new MBP 15" with a trackpad that works perfectly while on wireless. However, as soon as I plug in an ethernet cable - even when the network is not being used - the trackpad immediately becomes erratic and unusable.
As soon as I unplug the ethernet cable, the trackpad reverts to working fine again.
It only seems to be a problem when on battery.
There's a post from Jan 2010 that reports exactly the same problem but is now archived so I can't respond to it.
To summarise,
Ethernet cable plugs in --> Trackpad doesn't track correctly.
Ethernet cable out --> Trackpad tracks fine.
Is this a known problem ? Should I be taking the laptop back to Apple ?
Thanks !
Andrew

Hi,
AS the MacBook Pro is new I would take advantage of the Service and AppleCare level you still have.

Problem establishing login screen when ethernet plugged into NetComm NB5Plus4
I get a flashing folder that does not allow the login page to appear.
If I remove the ethernet connection then boot-up the system establishes the login page and I can plug the ethernet back in and the system logins in.
Where should I look to identify the problem, I am thinking it is the OS X install.

  • Unresponsive Novo Menu When Ethernet Plugged In (u430 Touch)

    Hello,
I have an interesting problem with my u430 Touch.  Recently I needed access to the boot menu, and I found that when I use the Novo button with an ethernet cable plugged in it will hang after a variable (but small) amount of time.
I tested this multiple times and found it only hangs when ethernet is plugged in.  Can someone else try this with their u430 Touch and see if they get the same results?  Perhaps this is a bug in the Novo menu.

You cannot share an IP address amongst two devices without some intelligence on the device you're connecting to. You need load-balancing in there to do that properly.
    Picture it this way:
Your MAC sends OUT information on it's highest priority port - in this case en0.
Your router responds to the IP address by using ARP (address resolution protocol) to resvolve the IP address to the interface's MAC address. My guess is the ARP table on your router shows that the IP address resolves to the MAC address of the wireless.
ARP is cached. If you cleared the cache on the router the Ethernet Port may respond to the ARP request and you'll get the routing that you want.
It's not really a workable solution in my opinion - sharing one IP amongst two distinct interfaces. ARP is going to get properly twisted.

  • [HELP] Erratic Trackpad When Connected To External Monitor

Hi guys, you've all managed to help me in the past so lets hope this time goes as smoothly
So today I purchased a Sharp LC-37XD1E as an external monitor for watching movies and playing games through my MacBook Pro, sadly although everything seems to be connecting nicely i'm having some major bugs with my trackpad and wired mouse.
For some reason when I try to move the cursor it fights against the moment almost as if it was on an elastic band, if I keep trying to move it then it start opening launch pad and switching to my other desktops, so far i've managed to find a small fix and that is if it starts bugging out and I press Esc it seems to resolve the problem for around 40 seconds before happening again.
The Mac is connected to the monitor through the mini DisplayPort on the Mac using a VGA cable connected to a miniDVI to VGA connector.
I know the monitor is an old model but so is my Mac and it's all I have to work with, here are the specs to help with your analysis of the possible issue.
Macbook Pro Unibody 15" Mid 2009

Folks: *there may be a power/signal issue going on here.* I had a similar problem of my network connection dragging to practically nothing when hooking up my LaCie external drive to the USB port. Please see my post below (link and text)
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9914924#9914924
    Folks:
Apple needs to get on this issue fast; after turning off my N mode on my WRT160N Linksys Router, I got my packet speed back up to where it should be... HOWEVER I noticed another problem.
When I hooked up my LaCie external drive (connected via USB), my packets on PING practically stall to nothing. I then eject the external USB drive and re-ping and I get acceptable packet speeds; I re-connect the LaCie external drive to the USB port and my PING crawls to nothing.
There is CLEARLY a correlation between the network speed crawling to nothing while hooking up an external drive; possibly a power sink and/or signal interference on the Airport when hooking up a USB device? (or perhaps even Firewire 800 too?)
I sure hope Apple is reading this one, because this could be a MAJOR issue that needs to be fixed ASAP.

My macbook pro is running very slow with some strange mouse and window movements. The trackpad is very unresponsive and when responding the cursor moves on its own and/or very erratically. When on safari the window suddenly zooms in or highlights words and looks them up via dictionary. I currently have a wireless mouse connected and I am still having the same problems.
I fee like I may have a virus or my laptop is perhaps being accessed remotely. All of the sharing options are unchecked.
    HELP PLEASE
    Very worried!!

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and
after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.
Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).

  • X220 Trackpad curser movement with Ethernet plugged in and with VGA connected to projector

Thre are many issues discussed about trackpad problem. My problem comes in the trackpad when X220 is connected to Ethernet port. The curser is not stable and it jumps aout 1/2 cm right and left withlout any figer movement, It vibrates on its own when only finger  is placed on the touchpad. This does not happen when Ethernet port is diconnected even with 90w adapter or 65w adapter plugged in. It comes with Ethernet only.
The same preoblem comes again when VGA port is connected to Projector. In my case problm has no affect with any power adapter.(90 or 65 w) plugged in.

  • Snow Leopard: I can't login when ethernet cable is plugged in.

I have a Aluminum 2007 iMac running Snow Leopard. When I try and boot it with all the cables plugged in (Keyboard, External Harddrive, Speakers, Ethernet, Second Display), it will bring up the login screen but then when I try and login, it will just hang at the default Snow Leopard Aurora Wallpaper. It shows the cursor but doesn't load the Finder or anything else. After leaving it be for a few mins, I restarted it a few times and it did the same thing. I have Archived and Installed a few times so far and that didn't fix it.
When I tried unplugging all the cables, it booted properly and works like a charm. When I plugged the Ethernet Cable in and booted it, it freezes like it used to. I tried plugging in other things and they work. But when the ethernet cable is plugged in at Startup, it will freeze at the default wallpaper (Located in System/Library/CoreServices/DefaultDesktop.jpg).
When I have the ethernet cable it will boot into Safe Boot.
Then when I booted it up without the ethernet cable it brought up two alert windows saying that Insecure Startup Item disabled. It says that /Library/StartupItems/tap and /Library/StartupItems/tun have can't be started because they don't have proper security settings. I looked them up and they appear to be Virtual Networking Interfaces (probably installed when I installed Parallels 4.0). Removing them and restarting with the ethernet cable in still has the same affect as before (freezing).
Anyone have any idea the ethernet cable is causing this to not login correctly.
    Additional Information:
    iMac
    1TB HDD
    3GB RAM

I suspect that it's busy trying to mount a network file system of some type.
Are there any errors in your logs that seem appropriate (viewable via Applications->Utilities->Console?)

  • Why does my printer not work when i plug in the internet? (ethernet)

    hey guys,
i have the Mac connected to a large digital printer via the ethernet connection. works fine, no problems untill i plug in the internet. I get an error message in my software and can't print any jobs, but the internet works fine.
I have a feeling that its a network problem, but don't want to mess around too much with the settings.
This is a company internet connection.
if anyone could advise of the possible network settings, I would be very greatful.
    thanks again.

Your Mac sends traffic to the interface at the top of the list in
    System Preferences > Network
When you plug in the second Ethernet, that Interface jumps to the top of the list and all traffic goes there.
The solution is to cable that Printer to your Router, not to your Mac.
Alternatively, you could add a small Switch and connect your Mac and the printer to it.
If you really want to you can use Internet Sharing to add the Ethernet port going to the Printer to the Network connacted to the Internet.

  • Trackpad freezes when USB plugged in

    Hey folks,
Own the mid-2012 rMBP (on 10.8.2) and when I plug in a USB key, or connect my iPhone, or when if I fire up VMWare Fusion, my trackpad freezes for 3-5 seconds.
I re-installed 10.8.2, hoping that would help, but it didn't. The only other troubleshooting step I've done is to reset the SMC.
Has anyone else come across this?
    Thanks

  • Erratic Trackpad Behavior - Result of RAM Upgrade?

Hello, all. It's been a long time since I last posted here, but I was wondering if anyone could offer their advice or expertise on an issue I've been having.
Last fall I decided to upgrade my MacBook from 1GB to 2GB of RAM. I installed the upgrade myself, and the RAM continues to work perfectly. Unfortunately, I must have been somewhat rough in re-inserting the battery (that, or I knicked something under the trackpad). Not long afterwards, my trackpad began behaving erratically, highlighting text I didn't want highlighted and generally skipping all over the place. The mouse button on my laptop is now all but un-pressable.
Fortunately, I use my laptop on my desk 90% of the time, and I have plugged in an external mouse with the "ignore trackpad when mouse is plugged in" setting on- and my computer functions as normal. However, I would like to see if I can regain proper use of my trackpad.
I know that the sensory hardware there must be extremely delicate (hence my problem), and most would probably recommend taking it to an Apple specialist to get fixed - but I'm not keen on forking over money for an issue that I can continue to work around. I would simply like to know if anyone else has had this problem, and/or knows of an easy fix/maneuver that might relieve whatever pressure is on the sensors and restore the trackpad to proper working order.

Thank you for the advice. I just tried that and it appears that with the battery removed, normal trackpad function is regained. Unfortunately, this defeats the purpose, because I only need to use the trackpad when I'm away from a power source.
Though this may be an issue for a separate topic, it seems the cause of this is a slightly expanded battery. (I've already heard of similar instances.) I'm frankly at a loss for how Apple could allow such an issue to affect the vital components of it's laptops. My current battery still works just fine and I'd prefer not to purchase a new one over a couple of millimeters, but I'd also hate to risk any permanent damage to the internal components of my MacBook.

  • My 15"MBPr goes dead when I plug in a TV over HDMI

I have a 2014 15"MBPr. It is the version with the 750M. All firmware and software is up to date, all the cabling has been verified to be working.
I use this laptop at a desk my lot. Until recently, my setup was a 24inch AOC display connected through an apple mini display to HDMI adapter. I leave the laptop screen open and run both. This has worked fine since I've had the computer. I have lots of other peripherals plugged in too these are as follows.
Thunderbolt to Ethernet (meaning both thunderbolt ports are occupied. Wifi is not an option)
USB3 Hub, which has my keyboard (A DAS Model S), my mouse (a Logitech Performance MX), my 3TB western Digital drive, and my focusrite scarlet USB audio.
Recently, I bought a TV. It is a 42 inch Vizio, model number M422i-b1. I went and bought an HDMI cable so that I could use it as a display if I wanted to. I plugged the HDMI in to the TV on one end, and then in to the HDMI port on my mac on the other end. It worked fine, I set up the displays so they weren't all mirrored, and so they were arranged in the right way.
I used the setup like this for an hour or two, then disconnected the laptop to take somewhere.
I came back a couple hours later, and reconnected the computer in the same manner that I described above:
    Ethernet to one thunderbolt port
Display out to my AOC monitor on the other
USB out to all the other things
    Power in via magsafe
After connecting it all up I tried to wake the computer, and nothing happened. The backlit keyboard came up, but all three screens stayed black. It seemed like the two external displays were getting a signal, but the signal was a black screen. Both external displays (The AOC and the Vizio TV) usually will say "No Signal" If they are not getting anything, but they were not saying "No Signal"
    - I tried a restart of the computer, nothing. All screens stayed black but I did hear a startup chime as usual. The grey screen and apple logo came up, but after that was finished loading all screens went black.
    - I tried connecting the displays after the laptop was up and running, I did the monitor first via thunderbolt and it worked fine, so I eliminated that as not being the problem. When I plugged the TV in via HDMI though, all the screens immediately went black.
    - After force restarting the computer again, I tried plugging the HDMI in to a different HDMI plug on the TV. The same problem persists with all four HDMI plugs. Then I tried leaving the cable on on the TV and pluggign the HDMI in to the computer when there wasnt anywhere for the computer to output to. Even without the HDMI port I want to use on the TV selected as the one I want ot use, the computer immedeatly goes black when I plug in HDMI.
    - Every time I force restart the computer, upon logging in (without the TV connected, computer will not even boot with TV connected) I recieve a message that says "Your computer shut down because of a problem, do you wish to continue?"
    - I have tested all the inputs on the tv with other devices (A windows PC and a PS3) and they all work fine. In adition the HDMI cable I am using is good.
What should I do from here to fix the problem?

    Hi everyone
My Macbook Air running OS X no longer boots when the ethernet cable (via USB adapter) is plugged in - it gets stuck at the grey screen. It starts booting as soon as I unplug it.

    Does anyone have another idea?

Right now I have a MBR-formatted harddisk in the ultrabay with the bootloader in the MBR. Once I get the bootloader off the MBR disk, I can easily continue to boot from my GPT-formatted SSD.
Yes, it seems that it's a BIOS bug at least on T520, T420s and W520 laptops. Even in "Legacy" mode first stage bootloader doesn't execute if partition type is 0xEE (GPT).
Hope Lenovo developers will fix it. They fixed something on BIOS 1.31

    - Fixed an issue where the computer might not be booted from bootloader program.
but it doesn't work for now. Pity.
