Erratic volume behavior

I finally resolved my Nano's erratic volume behavior. I use my Nano with a wrist band when working out. Finally figured out that it was the heat / sweat coming off my body that was causing my ipod to go haywire. I cut out a small square of foam and adhered it to the back of the Nano. Problem solved. Just keeping something between the Nano and my Skin seems to work great. I have never had the problem since. Here's a close up off the type of foam I used.

Thanks for the link. While the comments on that site do show that others are experiencing the same erratic volume issue, they don't say how to fix it, only that a nearby cellphone is the most likely culprit. I just don't see cellphone interference magically controlling the scroll wheel on my iPod. I guess I'll need to keep looking for a solution.
By the way, I have previously had many other cellphones (made by a handful of different manufacturers) and have only now experienced this with my new iPhone.

  • Erratic charger Behavior

Hi your help is greatly appreciated.
my macbook is 6 months old and and i am having having problems with erratic charger behavior. It varies depending on screen fluctuations and automatically switches off while switching to different applications on screen, or on switching on or turning off the computer. I am having to switch off and switch on power adaptor many times before i get my mac book charged. Battery has completed 60 cycles so far. Please help. Thanks

I've checked the firmware on battery; it's 1.3, presumably the latest.
The 1.3 update is the MacBook Pro update. You need to remove it before you can find out if anything else might be wrong. Leopard installs it.
Try these two locations for it. It will be one or the other.
    MacBook/Library/System/Library/SystemConfiguration/BatteryUpdater.bundle
    MacBook/System/Library/SystemConfiguration/BatteryUpdater.bundle
Drag it to the trash and then reboot. After you reboot you will be able to empty the trash. Once you have done that run software update and it should install Battery Update 1.2. You should reset the SMC (System Management Controller) after doing this.
Then watch your battery and see if any of the things continue to happen.
How many cycles do you have on your battery?

  • Erratic Volume Output From Speakers (App notifications, keypad tones, Ringing Volume)

Just purchased a Z1 over the weekend and was happily fumbling with the new phone. Got it updated to the latest 4.4.2 as well.
Noticed a glaring problem with the volume output from the speakers.
During use of instant messaging apps like Whatsapp and LINE, notification tones come in at times at the level that i set it at (max) and sometimes they come in really soft, to the extent i can't even hear them and sometimes none at all. All these happening when i've set the volumes to MAX on each of the available options under settings>sound>volume. Might i also add that the volume for notifications is really too soft even at MAX.
I'm not sure if this is happening due to the updating of the software or it was already an issue prior to the update. I've seen a couple of posts online where some users are experiencing the same erratic behavior of the internal speakers.
I hope someone can shed some light on this so we don't judge too quickly on an otherwise excellent phone.

I have the problem with my xperia Z1 speaker and ear phone not detect after update 4.4.2 in kitkat version.

  • Very Erratic Trackpad Behavior - Heat?

The trackpad on my one-year-old MBPro has started exhibiting extremely erratic and intermittent behavior:
    • Taps react as control-clicks
    • Cursor jumps and becomes impossible to control
    • Drags and scrolls behave unpredictably
The trackpad becomes impossible to use. Eventually, as now, everything returns to normal. I'm very experienced in the proper use of the trackpad, and am familiar with the 'phantom fingers' phenomenon, so no need to advise against keeping extra fingers and hands away from the trackpad.
This behavior has even occurred when standing well away from the computer: after fighting to control the cursor and restart the computer via the Apple menu, I left the room and returned to see a contextual menu of the Activity Monitor (set to auto-launch at restart) being self-activated.
I'm starting to guess that this is related to heat issues. In support of this theory, the following:
    - This behavior was first seen a few months ago when I traveled to the south of France where it was quite warm, and the computer had been playing video for some time. The computer was indeed rather warm.
    - Now it's summertime and the ambient temperature is warmer (though here in the Netherlands, it's not exactly tropical). The last two occurrences of this behavior (yesterday and today) have been hot sunny days. After allowing the computer to cool, the trackpad behaves as normal.
Others have reported strange trackpad behavior, but they seem to believe it is caused by defective or damaged hardware, or else user-error. It is often suggested they check their trackpad System Preferences. This post which supports my theory that this is indeed heat-related problem, also remarks that the problem is more likely when the battery is charging.
Can anyone offer advice, explanation or supporting arguments?
    Thanks

Try using your laptop without the battery installed (ie remove the battery and run the laptop from the mains supply only), and see if that cures the problem.
If it does, then you have a warped battery casing, and will need to replace the battery.
The battery sits directly over the trackpad circuitry, so that if the battery casing warps, it presses against the trackpad circuitry and causes it to act as though you have pressed it.
If that doesn't cure the problem, then you probably need to replace the trackpad, itself.

  • IMAC and external screen--screen flickering and erratic mouse behavior

I have purchased a screen Medion 25.5 inch to connect it to my IMAC 27 inch.
I have noticed two unexpected behaviours:
    - from time to time, after the IMAC comes out of the SLEEP mode, the external screen is flickering, I need to put the IMAC to sleep one or several times before the display of the external screen becomes stable.
    - since I connected the external screen, the behavior of the mouse is highly erratic, eg when I move the mouse by a fraction of a millimeter, the display of the mouse pointer moves by half a screen, or even disappears completely. I have performed many tests, with several apple mice, a Dell mouse and a Microsoft mouse. As soon as I completely disconnect the screen (not only power the screen down) the mouse works normally again. I have now decided to stop using the external screen until a software update resolves the situation.
    Any advice?
    Patrick

When my 2008 24" iMac started to die from overheating, two of the symptoms I would see would be white flickering from the bottom going about half way up, like it was going blank and repainting the screen over and over. Also, the mouse pointer would jump erratically to all the edges and corners of the screen. After a few seconds, it might recover or it might freeze. I would use a program like iStat Pro to see what your temps are when you attach that screen. I suspect it may be excess heat due to the GPU now pushing two screens instead of 1?

  • Iphone 4 erratic sync behavior

I've got a new iPhone 4. I was able to register and sync it. But now I'm getting erratic behavior--phone keeps buzzing, image capture flashes, and I get an error: "iTunes could not connect...unkown error 0xE8000001."
I tried unplugging and replugging the USB cable--no luck. Any suggestions?
    OS X 10.6.3, and iOS 4.3.3.

Hmm, I restarted iTunes and sync was fine...maybe the USB cable wasn't seated all the way? Problem solved for now, but if anyone has any thoughts on why this happened it would be good to know to avoid the issue in the future.

  • App Volumes 2.7 Writable Volumes - Behavior in Windows 8.1

    Hello,
I've been evaluating App Volumes 2.7 on a Windows 8.1 VDI environment, seeing that the release notes now indicate that the agent installed in Windows 8.1 is now supported. The AppStack works great with Windows 8.1 desktops, but I'm having issues with Writable Volumes, with or without in conjunction with Appstack(s). I am testing with Horizon View 6.0.1 with floating non-persistent desktop pool that refreshes on logoff.
So far, I tested with profile_only template and uia_plus_profile template, and noted some issues:
profile_only - Worst case scenario. Start screen pinned apps, especially the Modern UI apps, are broken, showing names like App, AppexMaps, AppexNews instead of the real name, and none of the shortcut works. Also, often times, the desktop shortcuts located on C:\Users\Public\Public Desktop that were captured as part of the AppStack doesn't show up at all. When it does show up, however, this is when absolutely nothing works. Shortcuts become broken and double-clicking has no effect. I can't launch anything, even when using Run command to launch explorer.exe and such, and I couldn't even issue a logoff command. Basically, I get a dead desktop.
uia_plus_profile - Better, but still not working correctly. New profile creation process gets triggered every time. This means user will see the "Hi, We're setting things up for you" animation every time (since it is non-persistent), or "Preparing desktop..." message if you disabled the first-time animation via GPO. Also, not all user settings seem to be preserved - Office 2013 thinks it's launching the first time and shows the welcome window when launched, for instance. The start screen problem still exists here as well.
Anyone else having this issue with Writable Volumes under Windows 8.1?
    Thanks,

So I wrote a small utility to update the start menu in windows 8.1 in C#
This seems to do the trick and constantly update the start menu in windows 8.1. I'm wondering if I'm the only one have issues with Windows 8.1, AppVolumes and the start menu

  • Can adapter cause erratic charging behavior?

For months, my 15" aluminum G4 Powerbook, which otherwise works fine, started slowly losing its charge--went down to 92%, 80%, sometimes 70%, then started recharging, apparently by itself. Also, the light often showed orange at 100 or 99% and sometimes turned green when it was going down. However, the battery appears to work normally when used without the adapter.
I called Apple and was told to reset the PMU and zap the PRAM, which helped. I then bought a new Macbook, and as soon as Apple had transferred my data from the PB to the Macbook, the weird behavior suddenly disappeared.
In the last couple of days, though, it's started again--battery apparently draining for no reason, then recharging again. This time, I tried tightening the connections at various times (duckhead, extension cord head, PB plug), and doing that does seem to get the battery to start recharging. I also noticed that the base of the adapter where the cord winds around the feet, and the adapter itself in that area, seem unusually warm. But the adapter is supposed to get warm when plugged in, right?
Has anyone else had this problem, and if so, did replacing the adapter fix it? (And should I buy fire insurance for my apartment?) Thanks for any advice you may have.

Here is an article on troubleshooting power adaptors:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1725
The body of the power adaptor can get warm, but it should not get too hot. If you think it is getting hot enough to possibly start a fire, you should stop using it immediately. Don't take any chances with it.
Do you have access to an Apple Store? If so, you could try one of their known good adaptors and see if the weird behavior continues with it. If not, then a new power adaptor might be in order. If the weird behavior continues, then you have a different problem.
You could also get your own power adaptor evaluated.
    Good luck!

  • Erratic volume levels on Nano

I am using iTunes 8.2.1 and have the newest update on the iPod Nano software. I checked the box next to "Sound Check" to even out the volume of all the music on iPod. Volume is differrent on songs, including songs that were from same CD. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Jodmcc1,
I hadn't seen this post earlier... But have you:
A - Enabled the Sound check on your iPod in the settings menu?
B - Additionally enabled this feature in your iTunes? I believe best described through these KB articles:
    * http://support.apple.com/kb/TA26590
    * http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2425
Once properly enabled it should help moderate and level the song volumes when the muic is played on your iPod.

  • Erratic Wifi Behavior

I'm not sure if this is something specific to my setup or something that persists in general; but my wifi behaves very oddly.
Here is the situation in it's entirety:
The iPod touches listed below and for the conditions listed below successfully connect to a network, successfully receive the correct IP addresses, default gateway addresses, DNS server addresses, and subnet masks pertaining to each network, but will not access the internet. Safari provides the error: "Safari can't open the page because it can't find the server."
I have an 8gb iPod touch.
My friend has a 16 gb iPod touch.
So far I have used my iPod touch at my home (Netgear Router) and at a friend's home (Linksys Router) And both places have the same issue.
My friend has used his iPod touch only at his home and has the same issue my iPod touch has.
Both wireless networks are secured by a 10 digit hexadecimal WEP key.
Both do not filter any MAC addresses.
DHCP is working and currently assigns every other computer on both networks (including the iPod touch) a valid IP address.
The internet works for all other devices connected to the network.
So far, the internet will work at random times after either resetting the iPod touch, renewing the DHCP lease, assigning the iPod touch a static IP address, and turning the wifi connection on and off; but we have yet to find a method that works every single time... These methods only work about 1/5 of the time and the rest of the time we just wait for the internet to begin working again.
    Help please! Thanks!

Well; I found a fix... Dunno if you can really call it that since the Wifi still acts erraticly.. But what I do is when the internet stops working, I just goto my network settings and change it either to static or dhcp (Depending on which one it was on)
For instance; If I have my iPod touch on static, and the internet stops working, I goto my settings and change it to dynamic and the internet starts to work again. A few hours later, when the internet stops working, I just go back to the wifi settings and change it to static, give it a valid IP address, and the internet starts working again... No restores, no restarts, no turning wifi on or off necessary.. Can anyone else confirm if this works for them too if they have a similar problem?

Sometimes since the last driverupdate, when I turn the Master Volume up or down in the ConsoleLauncher, the channelvolume for channels 3 to 7 are set to zero inside the WinXP Speakersettings. Only the right and left channel volumechange work.
I also tried with and without? Systemcontrol synchronizing, but didnt work.

  • Erratic trackpad behavior

The other day I replaced the hard drive in my iBook with a larger one, and every since I reassembled it the trackpad seems to be behaving erratically. I reopened it up and made sure that the trackpad ribbon cable was connected firmly, and it helped a little however the problem still remains. I know it is not a software issue because when I boot up holding option and play around with the cursor it has the same problem, skipping around and whatnot. I notice the mouse seems to work pretty well when I first boot, but gradually gets worse the longer the computer has been on. Could it somehow be related to the laptop overheating? Could heat from underneath the trackpad effect it? Would that explain why the longer it's on the worse it gets? That's the only conclusion I can come to. And just so you know I've reset the PMU, PRAM, and NVRAM. I've tried it all, wall outlet vs. battery (everything). So any thoughts? Is my theory valid?

I've never heard of overheating causing the trackpad to behave erratically.
I can think of several things that could cause this.
The PMU settings may be getting corrupted in some way.
From the Apple Knowledge Base article on _resetting the PMU_:
The Power Manager is an integrated circuit (computer chip) that is usually on the logic board of the PowerBook and iBook. As the name implies, it is responsible for power management of the computer. It controls backlighting, hard disk spin down, sleep and wake, some charging aspects, trackpad control, and some input/output as it relates to the computer sleeping.
Over time, the settings in the Power Manager may become unusable, which can result in operational anomalies with the computer.
Since making sure the trackpad ribbon cable was firmly connected helped a bit, it could be that the trackpad connector has been damaged slightly.
Another possibility is that the trackpad cable itself may have been damaged.

  • Erratic Trackpad Behavior - Result of RAM Upgrade?

Hello, all. It's been a long time since I last posted here, but I was wondering if anyone could offer their advice or expertise on an issue I've been having.
Last fall I decided to upgrade my MacBook from 1GB to 2GB of RAM. I installed the upgrade myself, and the RAM continues to work perfectly. Unfortunately, I must have been somewhat rough in re-inserting the battery (that, or I knicked something under the trackpad). Not long afterwards, my trackpad began behaving erratically, highlighting text I didn't want highlighted and generally skipping all over the place. The mouse button on my laptop is now all but un-pressable.
Fortunately, I use my laptop on my desk 90% of the time, and I have plugged in an external mouse with the "ignore trackpad when mouse is plugged in" setting on- and my computer functions as normal. However, I would like to see if I can regain proper use of my trackpad.
I know that the sensory hardware there must be extremely delicate (hence my problem), and most would probably recommend taking it to an Apple specialist to get fixed - but I'm not keen on forking over money for an issue that I can continue to work around. I would simply like to know if anyone else has had this problem, and/or knows of an easy fix/maneuver that might relieve whatever pressure is on the sensors and restore the trackpad to proper working order.

Thank you for the advice. I just tried that and it appears that with the battery removed, normal trackpad function is regained. Unfortunately, this defeats the purpose, because I only need to use the trackpad when I'm away from a power source.
Though this may be an issue for a separate topic, it seems the cause of this is a slightly expanded battery. (I've already heard of similar instances.) I'm frankly at a loss for how Apple could allow such an issue to affect the vital components of it's laptops. My current battery still works just fine and I'd prefer not to purchase a new one over a couple of millimeters, but I'd also hate to risk any permanent damage to the internal components of my MacBook.

  • Erratic mouse behavior

I have a MacPro running Leopard 10.5.8. Yesterday the mouse began behaving erratically. It seems to be perpetually trying to scroll down. It also won't allow me to select anything. The keyboard appears to be unaffected. I have tried 2 other manufacturers mouses and the same problem persists. I can only conclude it is some sort of software issue. The problem does not exist when I'm in Bootcamp running Windows XP. Anybody have any ideas?

Well, I tried that and it didn't work. I also uninstalled the Intellipoint (Microsoft) software that was controlling the mouse and that didn't work either. I've now got my wired Apple mouse attached to my Apple aluminum keyboard which is attached to my MacPro. Still no luck. It continues to behave very strangely. Any other ideas out there?

  • Erratic volume reduction!!!

This is one of the new symptoms that my ipod touch has developed.
as soon as the ipod is either turned on or brought back from standby mode, it behaves as if someone is continuously reducing the volume. Result, i cant increase the volume at all.
The other, donno if this is a feature or an issue, i am unable to seek through a track while its playing, except for holding the next track button till i get where i wish to..
Im taking it to the store tomorrow.
    Any advice?

before you take it to the store, have you tried the troubleshooting steps?
