Erratic & Weird iPhone 5s Behavior

I've experienced a truly weird episode of frozen screen, ghost typing, random app opening and picture taking on newly set up (used) 5s. Had to force reset several times to stop the behavior. It did all these things in very rapid succession while I watched the screen - it even opened a text to a contact, typed some gibberish, and attached a picture it took; it did not send or keep the draft. I've had the phone less than 24 hours and this has not reoccurred yet.  Has anyone ever experienced or heard of such behavior?  This is my third iphone and I have an iPad and Mac laptop, so am familiar with the hardware/OS.

Interesting that a bad lightning cable can be the cause -- that fits, because the behavior occurred when I plugged in with a cord that came with the (used) phone. Later in the evening when I plugged in with a cord of my own the problem didn't happen again, so I'm thinking if this is the cause it would be the cable, not the port. Would be great if fixing the issue is as simple as throwing away a defective cord. If it was a bad touch screen, I'm assuming the problem would be pervasive vice limited to the one episode?  I plan to try the suspect cord again, but kinda dread recreating the issue. Thanks!
For reasons I don't entirely understand, one of the symptoms of a bad cable is the kind of screen behavior you're describing. I had a bad car charger that caused my phone to lock up completely and require that it be reset not once but twice before it started working again. Although it could be a bad touchscreen as Lyssa suggested, bad cable seems to be more common. Hope you get lucky!

  • Weird dial assist behavior with ATT VoLTE on iPhone 6

I have international outbound dialing enabled on my ATT line.
Ever since I got my new iPhone 6 (that defaults to Voice over LTE on ATT), none of the international phone numbers I have saved that are prefixed with "+" or a "00" work. I always get an ATT recording "Please check the number and try again"
One possible fix I've found is going into Settings --> Cellular --> choose 'Data only (vs Voice and Data).
This is potentially a major issue because the standard prefix for international numbers is a "+"
This seems like an issue with ATT VoLTE and/or the iPhone 6.
    Has anyone else encountered this?

I Had the same problem after I updated to iOS 8.1.1.  The 8.1.1 update defaults the LTE setting to voice and data. It was driving me crazy since all my foreign contacts are programed in with +.  ATT nor Apple did not knew about the issue when I called on Dec 1.  After noticing that LTE indication was off when Dial Assist did work, I change the LTE setting to data only and it is now working fine.  I did  leave a voice mail with the Senior Apple Technical Support Advisor that was assisting me with this fix.  I am surprised that other people have not called them with this issue.
Wished I had seen your post before I restored iOS 8.1.1.

As you can see, the iPhone seems to get several DHCP addresses in a very short time and go to a self-assigned number in between. Does anyone know of a reason for this behavior? It knows about the network (which is using WPA) and the network limits access to known MAC addresses (this one is allowed).
This seems to cause problems with internal routing on the network (not sure what that might be). The DHCP server is a SonicWall firewall.

Yes, I've noticed this; it seems to initially broadcast, then switch over the previously assigned address. You wouldn't happen to be using WDS would you?
The only thing I've been able to figure out is that if it sees both wireless access points it seems to ARP on both, select the one with the stronger strength, and then attach to it.
You can backtrack on this by assigning a DHCP client ID and watching your logs. You'll notice it only supplies the Client ID to the station with the strongest signal strength. This seems to be a real problem if you have two in range and one is "borderline" and flutters in and out of range.
To workaround, assuming you are using WDS and have a central DHCP server, you can reserve an IP for the phone -- so even when the fluttering is happening it will always get the same IP for the MAC address.

  • Wifi and iphone (standard behavior or not)

hi, each time that my iphone is paused wifi conection is closed. Is that a standard behavior ??

You mean when putting your iPhone to sleep?
If so, I have experienced the same with each firmware version. When waking my iPhone after it has been asleep for a while, my wi-fi connection is lost but it takes a second or two to reconnect.
I'm going to check if the same occurs with my iPhone after installing firmware version 2.2.1.

  • Weird basic authentication behavior on safari

I'm a PHP developer, and testing web app compatibility among browsers. I found that safari behaves differently from other major browsers(IE,firefox, chrome) when it comes to basic authentication.
for example, i have a http://asdf.com/a.php, that is protected using basic authentication. when i access this page, i can print out the logged in user's username.
if the user click on http://asdf.com/b.php, a page with no authentication method, i can no longer display his/her username. in PHP language, the AUTH_USER server variable(which indicates that someone has authenticated in) will no longer be available. b.php has also to be protected using basic authentication in order for safari to retain the server variable.
this is so weird. all other browsers retain this server variable, but safari seems to just behave differently as if someone hasn't logged in.
does anyone know how to solve this problem?

I have a similar issue with Safari on iPhone, iPod Touch MacOS X and Windows.
It does not ask for the proxy password. Neither with PAC autoconfig nor with direct proxy configuration and even if username and password added in settings.

  • Gmail push notifications very erratic on iPhone and iPad

    iPhone 4S
    iOS 6.1.2
    iPad 2
    iOS 6.1.2
The push notifications on my iPhone and iPad have become very erratic but ONLY for my gmail account.  My work exchange account is working fine, in fact flawless.
Symptons:  I will receive an email that I can clearly see on gmail.com, but will wait for my iPhone and iPad to notify me and nothing.  I'l wait several minutes and still nothing.  I wake my iphone and check mail and have to manually pull down to refresh my email.  It's not all the time though, it's very sporadic.  For instance, if I wait long enough they will eventually show on my lock screen, but it can be several minutes to a half hour or more.
I only noticed this the past few days and I'm almost positive that I just upgraded both my iPad and iPhone to 6.1.2 just last week.  I am not sure if I can sum this up to "happening right after the upgrade to 6.1.2" or not.  However, it does seem to be a strong coincidence that I just upgraded and now I'm having the problem.
I have both my iPhone and iPad notifications set up the same way for both my email accounts and both have always worked fine and both have become erratic within the last few days.  I have not changed any settings.  I notice this both when I'm on cellular and when I'm home on my wifi network.
Is this something others are experiencing?  Strange that it's both my iPhone and iPad and no settings have changed.
Thanks all for any help you can offer.

I'm not sure if any of you use the gmail exchange support which WAS the only way you could sync email and calendar events and get push notifications for years.  Well it's going away, actually it's gone for new sync users.  For instance, you can not set up a new phone the way I have my phone set up if you are setting up a new sync account.  However, google's article...
    http://support.google.com/a/bin/answer.py?hl=en-uk&hlrm=en&answer=2716936
...clearly states that if you were an existing sync customer, you should have no problems.  Well, I guess they are sort of trying to "push" people to the new CardDAV.  I guess I'll bite and try it out tonight.  I am a very old google sync user (iphone 3G, 4 and 4S) and have not changed anything, so from this article I should be fine.  Well, I'm not.
I'll definitely try the "new" way and let you all know tonight (or tomorrow morning) how it's going.
    Thanks again for the replies.
Support for exchange active sync was dropped by Google for free accounts on Jan 30 of 2013. Apple was prepared for that since November of last year, you can check date on that article.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4872?viewlocale=en_US
Since Gmail still using Card Dav protocol, it allows new devices to sync Contacts. Google mail account takes care of emails and calendars sync by itself. It does have to do with push (you dead on), cause exchange supports push on whole other level, but it has nothing to do with your case. The information that I gave in my first post still stands. It looks like you think you know more then all people that responded to you, but (sorry, still feeling entitled to my humble opinion) you will see your push fixed by itself. Even funnier if you will make some change and it will coincide with google server back online. You will come here and provide us with your "fix".
Perhaps it will be something like "I just changed show emails from 100 to 200."
    @applenascent.
The way it works is simple. We do not realize, but google server actually knows what device is connecting to their server to pick mail. I had to replace my wife's ipad on Feb 7. Even when I restored from the icloud back up that for all intents and purposes made that ipad very similar - the account was still there, but simple gmail without exchange. Deleting account and re adding as exchange didn't provide solution. It just showed up as gmail. They even changed server name from m.google.com to google.com.
BTW it is quite possible that aTanasi's trick will fix the problem. I had to start running yahoo and gmail apps running on the background. I do not use them, but if there is a problem with account, like security kicks in harder, app is more capable to address that issue and informs me of what is wrong. I still find native mail app more pleasant, but thanks and credit to aTanasi.

  • Weird Touch Screen Behavior...Im rethinking the purchase

I don't know how to accurately describe the problem, but I will give it my best shot.
Sometimes your touch pad on your computer seems like it has a weird blank spot where it does not register when you touch it. This is the same thing on my iphone. It happens towards the bottom, right side of the phone. Did I get it wet or something?
I knew I should have waited a while to buy this thing! I cant type a text or email, and I'm afraid that I broke it and it wont be covered.

Try a hard reset first. To do that, hold the Home button (only button on the face of the phone) and the Sleep/Wake button (Skinny button on top) until the phone turns off and then boots to an Apple logo. When you see the Apple you can let go and it will boot to the home screen. Test it out and see if the "dead spot" is still there.
If that doesn't work, connect the iPhone up to your computer and on that Summary screen that comes up in iTunes there should be a "Restore" button. Click it. Let the download go, and leave the iPhone connected until the restore is finished. You should be able to re-sync all of your data after the restore is finished.
If the restore doesn't work, call Apple! If you haven't dropped this thing or gotten it wet, then it will be covered. It's at least worth a shot.

  • Strange iPhone Calendar Behavior

I am using a MacBook Pro OS 10.10.3 and an iPhone 6 iOS 8.3, I sync my Mac calendar to my iPhone calendar manually with iTunes (no iCloud). Several days ago, I noticed that when I change an event on my Mac (name, date, time, etc.) and do a sync, it creates a new event on my iPhone, but the old event is still there. If I do the opposite and change an event on the iPhone and then sync, the changes do not show up on the Mac, but the old (unchanged) event reappears on the iPhone. I tried the option in iTunes to replace the calendar information on the iPhone with the information on the Mac, but that hasn't solved the problem. Is there any hope of getting these two devices to sync their calendars correctly?

You are NOT alone! My iPhone 5 is doing some bizarre things as well! The random characters in e-mails or other alpha fields occurs - I give up and use SIRI because it will even jump around where it decides to input these characters! It opens apps I did not select or didn't get anywhere near. I thought it was my ZAGG InvisibleShield, except that my husband has the exact same set up as me on his iPhone 5 without the bizarre behaviors. The screen will zoom to majorly huge without my instructions (taps, pinch, etc.) and will get totally unresponsive. I must reset my iPhone a bazillion times a day and leave it completely off for long periods hoping to give its "brain" a rest.
Nathan's suggestion is what I will be doing, but the closest Apple Genius Bar is many hours drive from our home. I will have to wait until we fly out west for the holidays...

  • Weird iphone 5 lock screen

my iphone5 has locked the screen, it says that my passwpord is incorrect. But I'm 100% sure that i have entered the correct password here, because i used it like a minute ago, what has gone wrong for my iphone? P.S. i use only one 4 digit password, so there is no way i can remrember my password wrong, and my password was working fine before, this is really weird? Now after I have attempted to enter password several times, it has locked my phone for 60 mins.
Please help me, i'm seriously troubled.

Either you have gotten the passcode worng or someone who has access to your phone has changed the passcode
    LOST PASSCODE
You should be able to remove the passcode by restoring the device.
Connect the device to the computer with which you normally sync and open iTunes.
Note: If iTunes prompts you to enter the passcode, try another computer that you have synced with. Otherwise, go to "If you have never synced your device with iTunes", below.
Right-click the device in the left column and select Back up.
When the backup is complete, select Restore.
When finished, restore from your most recent backup.
    Otherwise read this
If that doesn’t work  you will need to perform a factory restore to remove it. Or read:
    Enter Wrong passcode

  • Weird custom menu behavior in 8.2

I'm in charge of upgrading a large project from LV 7.1 to 8.2 and I ran into several problems but was able to resolve them except 2 major ones (not including the crashing tables and indices in self-indexing while loops).
    1) Our custom menu now seems to badly lag when trying to open it. Takes a good 2-3 seconds for any items to show up when the application is running and this behavior continues UNTIL i switch to the block diagram and put in the password for our application (to access the code). This definitely seems like a bug and I wasn't able to find any similar posts. Is this a known issue? Why does it happen?
2)Badly lagging .VIT files. We have about 7 custom display .vit subvis which get called as clones by the application. They're not marked as re-entrant and I know 8.x changed the pass-by-value to pass-by-reference handling of clones. Is this the case? Why are my .vit now running twice as slow as in 7.1 on the same computer?
Altenbach mentioned overlapping elements on the FP of the .vit's in another post, but could someone clear this up for me please? Does slightly overlapping cursor display on a wavegraph count? Or is this when you have a completely different FP control right on top of another control? Any help is greatly appreciated.Message Edited by romulus on 01-24-2007 08:27 AM

    Hey romulus,
I am still not fully understanding the best way to try and reproduce your issue.  If I were to create a new VI with a custom runtime menu in 7.1, then lock the block diagram with a password, and then open this VI in 8.20, should it display this behavior?  I will continue trying to reproduce this on my machine, but have been unable to thus far.  If you can provide a VI that replicates this problem, I would be happy to talk with R&D about it and see what is happening to cause the issue.  Thanks!!

  • Weird Trash Emptying Behavior, Need Help!

I've read the apple support article for emptying trash, changing file permissions, etc.; I've also tried searching the apple discussions... So I hope someone can help me here!
I recently deleted Adobe CS2 from my applications. A lot of files were dragged to the trash, and now there are two folders in the trash that won't delete.
    They are:
    1. a folder called "Adobe Illustrator CS2", containing a folder named "Legal", containing a file named "Tiếng Việt.html" (the name's characters seem to be from a different character set).
    2. a folder called "Adobe Photoshop CS2", also containing a folder named "Legal", also containing a file named "Tiếng Việt.html" (same as above).
    Here are the issues:
    1. When I try to empty trash, nothing happens, these files just don't delete.
    2. When I try to secure empty trash, I get the message: "The operation cannot be completed because the item 'legal' is in use."
    3. I have permission to read and write the files and folders. Just to be sure, I tried "apply to enclosed items" in "get info", I get this error message: "The operation cannot be completed because one or more required items cannot be found. (Error code -43). I can open the trash and look at the files. They are definitely there.
    4. I read somewhere that because the names contain weird characters, they may not delete. When I try to rename the files, I get this error: "An unexpected error occurred (error code -43)."
    5. I've tried "chflags -R nouchg " and "sudo chflags -R nouchg " in terminal, and I get errors saying the files do not exist (after I drag the folders into terminal.)
Help! What should I do to try and fix this? I have no idea what is going on!

The problem is the illegal characters in the file name. Try booting from your install disk, then go to the menu and select Disk Utility and run the First Aid-Repair Disk function. Restart, and you should be able to empty the Trash.

  • Erratic synching iphone 4 and mac calendars

  • Weird non-boot behavior... How to diagnose?

My old workhorse (and man, how I love 'er!) is having a hard time booting after a power interruption. Here's what happens:
    1) I try to start up; get a brief "I'm coming on" sound, then it shuts down before the chime.
    2) I unplug all the peripherals except the keyboard. I try again; nothing at all, not even the initial sound of starting up.
    3) I unplug the power cord from the computer. Plug it back in. I get what I got in step 1, although I get past the chime before it shuts down again. One weird symptom here: a fairly loud "clicking" sound before the shutdown comes.
I upgraded to 10.4.x back in August, but it's been working fine since then. Until now, anyway. However, it's still running on its original battery (or isn't?).
What I could really use is advice on a diagnostic approach that will help me deduce this problem. For example: Should I buy a new battery, install that, and then try again, or should that be a later step?
I've been tooling around the Apple support site looking for helpful info, but I haven't turned over the right rock yet. Any links to appropriate documents (or other way of finding them) would also be greatly appreciated.
Of course, I realize my baby is six years old and has been very faithful, even under heavy work conditions, and all good things come to an end. But before I get there, I'm anxious to try anything I can to get 'er back up and dancing along.
    Thanks!
    Sam

I would try resetting the PMU. You could have a dead battery; if it's over 3 years old it'll need replacing soon anyway. Try things in Texas Mac Mans tutorial.
    Cheers!
    DALE
p.s. That clicking sound could be your hard drive failing or some other hardware problem. If you get going try running the Apple Hardware Test disk.
