Erratic wired mighty mouse

I've just bought my first Apple MacPro about 6 weeks ago with a wired keyboard and wired mighty mouse. In the last week the mighty mouse has become very erratic in that it acts as if the back button has been pressed when ever the mouse is moved. In other words if I'm working on line and I touch the mouse even slightly the previous web page is brought up.
If use it in explorer or finder it brings up the previous directory.
This problem is present both in Leopard and in Windows XP running in Bootcamp.
Rebooting makes no difference
I've now attached an old Dell Logitech wireless mouse to a usb port and it works perfectly both with leopard and windows.
Any ideas?

I'm going through the same "issue" actually so I hope I can save you some time.
It's a grounding issue. You can experiment:
- Touch your Mac Pro system while you're moving the mouse, or;
- Touch your keyboard while moving the mouse
If the mouse calms down and doesn't try to escape , then you have the source of the problem.
I've read a lot of discussions on this, with people replacing their mice constantly, and even doing a full re-install. So if the above works, then your solution is in figuring out how to deal with the ground-ing problem.
What's more surprising is that Apple hasn't addressed this (it seems) for some time now. With all the gyrations customers go through, you'd think there would have been some type of solution (a recall perhaps?).

My wired mighty mouse no longer scrolls down; only up and sideways. It could be a hardware problem and I guess I should go and by a new mouse but before I do I thought I'd check whether there was any parameter I could change to fix or test this. Anyone else had this problem? Cheers.

  • Wired Mighty Mouse vs. Wireless Mighty Mouse

Hey, my wired Mighty Mouse track ball just crapped out on me (I can't scroll down anymore) so I guess I am looking to buy another one.
Does anyone have any experience and/or opinions on the Wireless Mighty Mouse track balls being any more reliable or longer-lasting than the Wired Mighty Mouse track balls? Or are they both pretty much the same quality-wise?
    Many thanks.

Trust me, copelander, a mighty mouse that will not scroll in one direction is almost always simply dirty. I have two (one BT one wired) each of which I bought very soon after they first came out. Essentially failure to scroll in one direction means that one of the four directional sensors that it relies on has got clogged.
Cheby (above) describes the usual solution very well. Simply disconnect the mouse, hold it upside down, and rub the ball vigorously in all directions on a clean piece of paper. Try to avoid "running over" any of the tiny black specs that will probably appear on the paper , as the ball is good at picking them up again.
If things have progressed beyond the this, the tip of something like the plastic toothpick that comes with swiss army knives, or a cable tie, worked gently in around the edge of the ball, can help, but be gentle so you don't damage the mechanism. Some people also use a dab of isopropyl alcohol on a clean cloth applied to the ball.
To keep your MM running smoothly for a long period, clean it using the "rubbing on paper" trick AS SOON AS you get the slightest sign of bad scrolling, or every few days, whichever comes sooner. Once you have done this for a while you will find that the problem becomes much less frequent, as the internals get rid of any accumalated residual gunk.
People who smoke, and those whose hands get oily or grubby for one reason or another, seem to have more problems with this issue, and might want to think about a regular 'wheel" mouse instead, but I've found that a minute of preventative maintenance every few days keeps my MM's scrolling beautifully in all directions. I haven't noticed any difference in the behaviour of the wireless or wired models in this respect. They both use the same scroll ball mechanism, so this isn't surprising.
As far as choosing between a wired and a wireless one goes for use with an MBP the wired one is lighter, and probably uses less battery than having bluetooth running all the time. On the other hand, the BT one can be handy if you are working in cramped quarters, and don't want a jumble of wire to deal with.

  • Will any wired MIghty Mouse still work with my G5?

Unfortunately, my Mighty Mouse has reached the impossible-to-clean-trackball-anymore stage. It just won't scroll up anymore.
My current Mighty Mouse dates to 2006 or 2007. I wish I knew the exact model number beyond A1152.
Must I be concerned about what model Mighty Mouse I buy to replace this one? I know they came out with some zoom version. I don't care about the zoom. I just want the basic scrolling (I don't even use the side buttons; just click and scrolling).
Will any model of wired Mighty Mouse be okay?
    Thanks so much!

  • Why isn't my wired Mighty Mouse scrolling down?

Some days like right now my wired Mighty Mouse that came with my late 2007 20" aluminum iMac doesn't want to scroll downwards. The scroll ball scrolls upwards and sideways perfectly but doesn't want to scroll down. Why is it doing this? I tried cleaning the area of the scroll ball but still nothing. Please don't say that I need a new mouse.

I have the same problems with my less than six weeks old 24" iMac & two yr old macbook: i always wipe my hands before using them. I have tried most suggestions on this forum and others to no avail.
I could probably get a replacement thru apple care for my iMac, but since the problem is so prevalent, another mouse is not a viable solution.
At this time, I actually prefer using an old cheap wired mouse that was in storage .
To those considering another brand, I had random waking & waking only with restarting issues with a wireless logitech mouse on my macbook.

  • Wired Mighty Mouse lacks Scrolling Options

    Hello,
Is there a way to enable zoom-scrolling on a wired Mighty Mouse?
I was reading Mac Help on mouse settings and noticed a feature that I've never noticed before: Scrolling Options. Help claims that this feature allows to customize the scroll-ball behaviour, including 360 degree scrolling and zoom-scrolling. Alas, I failed to find this feature in my Keyboard & Mouse pane.
I searched on Google, and it seems that this feature was introduced in the new driver that ships on a CD with the new wireless Mighty Mouse. Look here: http://tinyurl.com/pyx7s.
Will this new driver work with the wired Mighty Mouse? if yes, where can I get this driver?
    —barmalutka
      Mac OS X (10.4.7)

The Zoom function appears to be giving the wireless MM access to the Universal Access System Preference "Zoom" feature.
The MM already has 360° scrolling. I sense that the pulldown menu you see in the System Preference Pane for the new wireless MM probably gives you control to limiting the direction of the scrolling to left-right, or up-down and possibly diagonally.
Who knows, if we are lucky the new MM System Preferences may appear in a future OS X update.
    Until then these 3rd party mouse System Prefs are available;

  • Wired Mighty Mouse and right click on my intel  imac

    Hi,
    This is a stumper!
    1) Wired mighty mouse stated to lose right click functions. Control click
works fine but right click with menus is gone.
    2) Tried steer mouse. No change
    3) Deleted hidmouse user prefs. No change.
    4) System Archive and install. no change
    5) Clean install and Account reinstall (by hand). no change
    6) Nuke and Pave. no change
    7.) Pram reset. no change
    8) Mouse works on other Macbook- not a mouse problem.
    9) Second Mighty mouse exhibits the same problem.
    10) logging into second account. no change
    11) Other 2 button mice work!
    12) I like my mighty mouse, but I need right click!!
    13) Tried Apple Dev hid driver debug . no change
    14) Tried a bunch of other things but this has me stumped....
(and I'm Apple Certified) any other suggeestions or software
I can try? Context plugins are ok...but I'm not sure if there are other prefes to deleted? Also, a totally fresh install should have fixed this...what's going on here? I need to know.

What is strange about my mighty mouse which also experiences similar issues is that you have to be careful where you are pushing it. My right tbutton is set as a control click but if I don't push it in the very upper right hand of the mighty mouse it behaves as a single click. The left hand button, as such, does not seem to be as sensitive to placement as the right hand one. For a long while I could not get it to work at all, until I figured out where I actually had to strike it.
I had never used a mighty mouse until I purchased a new iMac a couple of weeks ago and just figured it was "operator difficulty" as I am far more used to a trackball than a mouse. I may still go back to one if I can't get used to this mouse. I think you really have to put your whole hand over the mouse to make it function properly and I tend not to do that.
Does this help you with your issue? I am not sure, maybe there is some sort of difference in the way the mighty mouse works with new hardware?
Good Luck! Wish I had more to offer other than trying carefully to position your handin difernt places and see if that helps.

  • Wired mighty mouse setup.....

    Good morning.
Any anybody point me towards basic setup instructions for the A1152 wired mighty mouse (NOT current "magic mouse")?
What do the buttons do singly and in combinations, scroll button antics, etc...........

  • Wired mighty mouse makes clunky noises

Hi, my two month old wired mighty mouse has started making loud clunky noises when I use it and when I press gently on it it seems loose, I can get it to make that noise just by pressing lightly on it. It works fine, it's just not quiet like it used to be and like my old was one for 3 years. It seems like a mechanical problem.
Does anyone know where I might read about this kind of problem and how to fix it and has anyone
    else had this happen too?
    Thank you,
    Martha

Easiest thing to do is contact AppleCare and get it replaced. They'll send you a replacement and then you return the bad one. No waiting or fuss. Usually arrives within a couple of days.

  • Wired Mighty Mouse cannot scroll down.

I have had my wired mighty mouse since 2007. Every once in a while the scroll would stop working for a second but once i rolled it around, it would start scrolling again. Now my mouse has not been able to scroll down all day. I have read online that if you roll the scroller around on paper, it will clean the roller and it should start working again. I tried this many times and my mouse is still not functioning. Is there a way to fix this or should i just purchase a new one?

You need to open & clean. Watch this video.

  • Driver for wired mighty mouse driver in windows xp pc

I'm looking for drivers for the wired apple mouse aka mighty mouse to run in windows xp pro to have horizontal scrolling.  Currently the generic plug & play driver allows vertical scrolling and horizotal only if the vertical scroll is not present.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

I have a MBP running Bootcamp 1.1.2 and XP SP2. My Bluetooth Mighty Mouse works well within XP with the exception of the left-right scrolling.
First I installed the mouse in the OSX operating system. Then when I booted in XP, I used the "Bluetooth Devices" from the control panel to find and connect the mouse with no problems.
I didn't have to worry with any mouse driver installation.
Is Bluetooth working in XP mode?

  • Wired Mighty Mouse problems with Mavericks.

Alright, so today I was gifted a wired Apple mighty mouse for Christmas and immediately after I started to use it, the cursor started to 'rubber band' (snapping back to previous positions). I've searched around and tried numerous supposed fixes that include resetting the Hot Corners, rebooting into safe mode and cleaning the mouse itself with no success. I recently updated to Mavericks if that's any help. Any help will be appreciated.

Hi ~Bee Thanks for your advice I do believe it its fine now !
Looks like I need a new Mouse mat, It's strange how the mat affected the mouse I haven't had any problems in the past ? I have also cleaned the mat and still have the same problem if I continue to use it. Could you recommend a mat to buy by any chance ?
Thanks also to you Dave, Looks like we got there in the end !

  • How to wired mighty mouse in windows 7

i am using an old apple mighty mouse with my windows notebook. the trackball doesn't work and the configuration panel in Windows 7 doesn't config mighty mouse button. is there any solution to config mighty mouse in Windows 7? thank you.

There is no need for additional drivers.
    Why?
If you have a Wireless Mighty Mouse you have to turn your computer visible for other devices in the Bluetooth preferences - then simply search for Bluetooth devices, connect - done!
To configure the Mighty Mouse's buttons, you might want to have a look at a tool called X-Mouse Button Control (http://www.highrez.co.uk/downloads/XMouseButtonControl.htm).

  • Wired Mighty Mouse problems

Over the last week I've been experiencing some very frustrating problems with the wired Might Mouse running on my Dual 2.0Ghz PowerMac G5 (10.4.9). I've tried cleaning it with compressed air and the consistent problems would indicate that it's not a problem that can be solved by cleaning.
    There are two main problems:
    1. Sometimes when dragging a window, file or anything for that matter the mouse all of a sudden "releases" the item and instead selects whatever item is behind the current position of the mouse. It's almost as if a release and a click are being triggered automatically while dragging an item.
    2. Clicking works only part of the time. Sometimes I'll click on something and nothing happens and then I'll click again and it works just fine.
The programs I usually have running are:
    Adobe Photoshop CS2
    Dreamweaver 8
    Adium (newest version)
    iTunes 7.1.1
    Firefox 2.0.0.3
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

No one has any ideas? I also have Virtual PC running, forgot to mention that.
