Erreonously did 'Reset Printing System..."

Hello Mac Friends
I did a 'Reset Printing System..." and thus lost all the Presets in the printing dialogue (like Canon papers, my customized settings etc.). There's only "Standard" anymore
I think there is a pref file which I could restore from my daily backup, but which one?
I tried a few and also was searching in the forum with no success so far.
Thank you very much for help!

  • Reset Printing System does not exist on my computer!!!

I have been trying to get my HP PSC 2175 to print and working with HP support to do this. It just prints out blank pages. The last thing they sent me was to Reset the printing system using the Printer Setup Utility. And they sent me to the below link:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301185
For whatever reason, the "Reset Printing System" DOES NOT EXIST on my computer. I actually sent screen captures to show them. The first showed my
version of the Printer Setup Utility (3.0) and the second showed the
Printer Setup Utility menu - with no such option. I am running OS 10.4.4 and have all of the updates. I even opened the Printer Setup Utility holding down the "option" key.
Does anyone know how to reclaim this feature???
    thanks
    eric

After all of the emails back and forth with HP, I have really only done two things: A complete manual uninstall - which is a royal pain in the butt. That is worse than any uninstall with windows, and way worse than Class MacOS. Then they kept trying to get me to Reset the Printing system - which is what I can't do.
I upgraded to Tiger via a DVD - straight from the box. I had 10.3.x, bought Tiger and upgraded. I have since updated it via the website. I think what I just installed was the combo updater - but I don't think it really did anything as I had already done that.
If there is a better way to go, please let me know. I searched all over Apple's site for just that piece of the printing system, but unlike the old OS, there doesn't seem to be a way to download those components.

  • "no printer selected" unless i reset printing system

My printer is never recognized unless i go into the printer setup utility and click on "reset printing system" Then i wait for the utilty to find my printer and i can print. Everytime i shut off my computer, i have to reset the printing system in order to use the printer.
Does anyone know the solution to this problem?

1 back up your stuff to an external drive if at all possible. Use something like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper!.
2 get out the system CD or DVD which came with your system, or the retail copy of OS X which you bought separately if you upgraded your system software with a newer version of the OS.
3 boot from the CD or DVD noted above by inserting it into the optical drive and restarting holding down the 'C' key.
4 select 'Install' from the options at startup. The system will tell you that you need to change some options to do an install. Tell it yes. You will be presented with a list of options, one of which will be to do an erase install (which will erase your drive and you'll have to move over all your stuff from your backup, you did make a backup, didn't you?) and one of which will be an archival install, which will move your current system files into a folder named Previous Systems and which will install a brand new system. Select archival install.
5 once the install is complete, restart your Mac on the internal drive, and verify that all is well. You can move items you want to keep from the old system, such as fonts, over to the new system and then toss the Previous System folder into the Trash.

    Hello,
It isn't the fw in Network you want o use or look at, that's for something completely different.
My first suspect is the Power Adapter on the LaCie has gone.
At the Apple Icon at top left>About this Mac, then click on More Info, then click on Hardware>Firewire, what is listed there?
    Reset the Firewire bus
If your Firewire or USB isn't recognizing any device.  A solution which has worked for some whose hard drive became invisible in 10.4 was simply to follow these four steps to reset the Firewire/USB bus:
    1. Shut the machine down.
    2. UNPLUG the power lead to the computer and any firewire/USB drive or devices.
    3. leave it for 10 minutes.
    4. Connect back up and reboot.

  • Ahhhhh... change the description for "Reset printing system"!!!!!!!!!!

    It reads exactly like this:
"Are you sure you want to reset the printing system?
This will delete all of your existing printer queues and all pending print jobs."
Who would expect this will delete all the installed printers??
Apple should really change this warning in the dialog box to
"Are you sure you want to reset the printing system?
This will delete all of your existing printer queues and all pending print jobs *and all the printers installed in your system*."

"Installed printer" means exactly the same thing as "print queue," although I agree this might not be obvious.

  • FF won't let me select the Epson printer anymore. IE will. Did reset printer in about:config.

Printer is first one in select box. When I select, it jumps back to MS xps file printer. Worked a few days ago. I know MS updated, AFTER the problem started. I also upgrade from 3.6 to 4.0, did not solve problem. Tried safe mode, reset printer in about:config.

The RX680 is the only printer. The other one seams to come in automatically. It came back in when I removed and reinstalled the printer as one of the "fixes". I only reset the one. I have a second problem, that may be the real cause. Drop downs are not working Neither are hovers. The weather app will not show radar, but for a second.

  • How do I reset print system from terminal

I was having trouble seeing my desktop's shared printer from my laptop, so I ran the following in the terminal:
    cupsctl BrowseProtocols='"cups dnssd"'
Now any app that so much as thinks about printing crashes, including the system preferences. I am totally hosed here. How can I undo this? I can't get to any printer dialog to "reset the print system"

AFAIK, there is no Terminal command to reset the printing system. This question was asked a while ago for Leopard and this was the answer then - don't know if this has changed for SL. The CUPS man pages would suggest it hasn't...
But there is now the ability to reset the cups daemon configuration file via the CUPS web page. Using your browser, open the CUPS Admin page
    http://127.0.0.1:631/admin
Here you will see the button 'Edit Configuration File'. Click this and you will see the cupsd.conf entries. Looking through this file shows that network shared printers are browsed using "BrowseLocalProtocols CUPS dnssd", the same as you tried to enter with the other command which could be only for 10.5?
Anyway, here you will also see the button 'Use Default Configuration File'. Click this and then click Save Changes. This will prompt for your admin username and password. Enter these and OK. Hopefully this gets you back the ability to access Print & Fax and to print again.

  • Reset printing system, now I can't connect to the wireless printer

I have an HP wireless printer that worked perfectly on the wireless network from this computer half an hour ago. the second print job could not connect to the printer, so I reset the printing system (stupidly). Now when I go to "add a printer" in the print and scan menu, nothing pops up. My computer and printer are both connected to the same wireless network.

The protocol that advertises the printer on the network is called Bonjour. There are currently users who have upgraded to Yosemite that can no longer see the printer, but I've not read about Mavericks users having the same issue.
One test is to enable the Bonjour browser in Safari. This will then let you test if the Mac can see the HP. To do so, open Safari > Preferences and select the Advanced tab. You will see an entry called Bonjour. Select to show Bonjour in your Bookmarks menu. Then close the Preferences pane and select the Bonjour entry in the Bookmarks menu. Do you see the HP? If no, then using the control panel on the HP, print a network configuration list to determine what IP address the printer is using. Once you have this address, enter this as the URL in Safari. This should result in you connecting to the internal web page of the HP. Does this work?

  • Help!  Where Did My Printing Options Go With My Epson R800?

For some reason, I've lost the Format Settings from my Epson R800 printer (USB) when I open Page Setup. Typically you should get options for "Manual", "Roll Paper-Borderless Banner" and several others in Page Setup. This all started when I did a "Reset Printing System" in Printer Setup Utility. This deleted all the options from my Library>Printers folder. I have copied the folder contents back from a backup with no success. I've also trashed the contents of the Epson folder in the root Library>Printers>Epson folder and the EpsonPrinterDriver.pkg in the Receipts folder, and reinstalled the Epson Printer Software from my Tiger Installation Disk. Repaired permissions, ran a repair on both Disk Utility and DiskWarrior. The right contents appear to be in the appropriate folders, but when I used Printer Setup the only driver that comes up is the generic "Epson SP R800." Clicking More Printers just says that it is unable to turn Apple Talk on - I'm not using it. This has to be a software problem, because I everything works as it should when I start up using an older backup disk. This is driving me nuts! My primary use for the printer is with roll paper, and now I can't access that feature. Does anyone have a fix or suggestion for this problem? Thanks.

Greg, I'm an idiot! Turns out the Print Browser had somehow reset itself to Apple Talk. Clicking More Printers was then giving me the can't turn on Apple Talk message. When I clicked on Print Browser popup there was the Epson USB just as you said it should be. Selecting this put me in business. So simple, and I feel so stupid. Sorry for the bother. Anyway, thanks for the help - much appreciated.

Your issue technically does not really belong in the 'getting online and networking' section of the forum as your printer is a usb printer.
And also your in the 10.5 section of the forum. You state in your post that your using 10.4.11
Try posting your issue here Tiger Printing and Faxing

  • Reset Printing in Leopard?

How do I reset printing in Leopard?
If you look at the support pages it only has the walk through for Tiger!

I always wonder how people figure this stuff out! And what I wonder even more is why software developers think it's better to hide stuff like the "Reset Printing System" option in such an obscure manner. At any rate "control clicking" in the printer list area does indeed bring up the reset option. Thanks for the pointer....

  • Printer System Reset Asking for Password...

    Evening,
Today I tried a Printing System Reset by doing a option click in the printer queue on the Print and Fax section of the System Preference menu. However for some reason when I hit the reset button, OSX asked for my user account password, is this normal, I am the only user account on my computer.
    Thank You!

    Matt Broughton wrote:
I don't think that it normally does ask for authentication, but I would not consider it wrong.  It could be that padlock at the bottom of the Print & Fax pane showed that it was "locked".  In such a case, the system should definitely ask for an administrator's user name and password.
    Matt,
The printer reset menu does not have the keylock in the locked position when it happened. However, today I reseted the system today and it did not asked for a password today which makes me think that it was a permissions problem, since I did a repair permissions after seeing that. Don't know if the permission repair had to do with this but the problem is fixed.
    Thank You!

  • I can't see my Canon MG5220 printer... Initially I was getting "there is a communication error" so I rebooted everything, reset the printing system, reinstalled the driver and still NO luck! It seems to see the scanner, but never the printer. HELP!

I can't see my Canon MG5220 printer... Initially I was getting "there is a communication error" so I rebooted everything, reset the printing system, reinstalled the driver and still NO luck! I see no printers available in the Print & Scan area. If I click "+" it seems to see the scanner, but never the printer. HELP!

The printer component uses a different protocol to advertise itself on the network compared to the scanner component and it can take several seconds longer to appear after the scanner has.
That said, with the introduction of AirPrint, the MG should be seen as Bonjour Multifunction in the Add Printer window, as shown below.
Selecting this Bonjour Multifunction entry will create a printer using AirPrint and a scanner using the iCA driver.
So do you see the MG5220 as Bonjour Multifunction or just Bonjour?
