Erroneous TIme Capsule update notification

I'm running OS 10.6.4 with a 1T Time Capsule Version 7.5.1. Every few days, I get a dialog box indicating that an update is available for the Time Capsule. It says that the update will improve reliability and has two button 1) Update later and 2) Open Airport Utility. It also cautions that I may need by Time Capsule Password. When I open the Utility, nothing happens. So, I browse through my configuration and see that I'm already running the latest firmware. Has anyone else been seeing this?

I have had the same problem for a while, and noticed the number of incorrect updates was actually increasing. Yesterday it was up to 13! I spent some time with this, and finally found one thing that helped this issue.
It appears that there may be some sort of bug such that, if you have purchased the app directy from within your iPhone or iPad, then iTunes will notify you that they need to be updated (probabl when you connect it to your Mac), but it does not actually have the apps listed within iTunes itself or something, so when you go to update it does not show them as being available. To resolve this:
1. Connect all your iOS devices
2. Luanch iTunes.
3. From the File menu select "Transfer Purhases from (your iOS device)".
4. Repeat this for all your iOS devices.
This cleared up 10 out of the 13 that were showing up incorrectly on my update count. I still have 3 unresolved ones, so there are apprently other reaons why this can happen.

  • Time Capsule update makes me input IP/Secret info

I updated the firmware on my Time Capsule, and it shows an error that my Apple ID is incorrect. This is true because I originally used the Time Capsule and Back to my Mac with MobileMe, which iCloud with your Apple ID has superseded. I tried to change my Apple ID, but when it tells me it needs to update that upon closing the AirPort Utility, it says "IP cannot be left blank" and forces me to input my "Primary RADIUS Server IP" and "Primary Shared Secret." I don't know what these are or why it's making me do this. Help?

Did Software Update on those Macs show the Update? If so, download and apply it, and see what happens.

Yes, this is new and nobody's been able to figure out just what it's all about. Some folks who don't even have Time Capsules have gotten the update. Some get and apply the update, but don't see the message.
We don't really know if the update is being applied to the Time Capsule itself, or to OSX on Macs that have, or back up to, Time Capsules.
So, see what Software Update shows for your other Macs, and let us know. That may give us a clue. By the way, are they all running 10.6.2?

  • Time Capsule update

Was an update to TC made today?
I received a message to download it and I did. Yet the "update" does not appear in Software Updates under System Preferences. Further, I cannot change the owner from everyone to myself. When I try to name myself it says I'm not a "valid name."

A software operating system update would include something like a new version of AirPort Utility, but a firmware update for your Time Capsule would only be applied if you open AirPort Utility and click Manual Setup.
If you don't see a message about an available firmware update, click on the AirPort Utility menu item at the upper left corner of the screen next to the Apple icon and then click Check for Updates.

  • Time Capsule Updates destroys my internet connectivity. How do I fix this?

When I update on my time capsule, which happens rather frequently, my internet connectivity slows down considerably. Would deleting backup files on the TC make my internet quicker, is there any way to make my tc update less frequently (like twice a day) or anything else you recommend.
If so, how do you do this.
    Thanks a bunch.

When you say "update on my time capsule", do you mean "have Time Machine write backup files from my computer to my Time Capsule"?
If so, a Time Machine backup can involve some fairly intense network activity, so I'm not surprised your network slows down during that time. It should only be happening once an hour. There are third-party utilities that can alter that schedule. Try this one:

  • Time Capsule update not working for a few MAC addresses

Whenever I update the Timed Access Schedule list of MAC addresses, some of the Wireless MAC Addresses I include go back to unlimited access ("Everyday" "all day") after a while.
In other words, the "update" list configuration is accepted and works for some time; but the filter applied to some of the MAC addresses simply stop working after a while; therefore, those MAC addresses go back to the status of unrestricted access.
This is happening consistently and I am not being able to program some MAC addresses in my local network to follow the schedule I wish (i.e., accessing the network only within previously specified.
Has anyone experienced such a problem? Is that a bug? Any hints on how to solve this?

If you restart the TC does it work again?
Check the connectivity leds on both ends if possible.. certainly each port on the TC has small, micro small LED.. is it green when you are plugged in??
You will need to connect a computer and attempt to ping the TC.. see if it passes packets.
How old is the TC? The model number from the rubber foot please.. A1xxx
And also if you can check the log from a computer if there are any issues.

  • Time Capsule Updating and Windows PC

I have a beutiful wifi network based on Time Capsule, iMac, MacBook Air and Windows Laptop.
Since yesterday I was able to connect to my Timecapsule HD areas by my Windows Laptop using the dedicated AirPort utility.
Yesterday I update the TC software with the last issue and....all my Mac's are able to access to the TC HD but Windows Laptop not.
I still able to be connected with internet but when I log in to my disk I received the message "Unknown user, incorrect password or login disabled".
The same disks, with the same user are fully available from the Mac's.
    What happen?
    Roberto

I see you have no responses to this so will offer my (limited) knowledge. I have a TC 500GB "newer" and have the following connected wirelessly: MacBook Pro (N), Dell 610 (G), 2 iPhone 3G units (G), Toshiba Laptop (G), Apple TV (N), 2 Airport Express units (N - serving as bridges to remote ethernet devices) and an older Intel iMac (G). I see no issues with throughput on the Windows or the Apple devices. I also have a "guest network" setup and active for visitors. Everything has been updated to current versions of firmware.
Can you provide any more details on the setup of the network and the Windows computer? I have seen corporate Windows computers be very sluggish when first connecting to home networks due to a bunch of admin stuff the company loads on. This admin stuff is trying to find network servers and do stuff like do security verification, update virus software, verify loaded programs, push out Windows and other updates. Some of this stuff takes a while before it gives up and eats up performance.
I don't know if the Windows is N or G or what mode the TC is running in. Frequently the G performance can be compromised by interference from other network routers or even you cordless phones. Have you tried moving the Windows computer around? Does the performance improve if it's in the same room as the TC? Details may help.

  • How do you update time capsule

Are Time Capsule updates automatic or is it done manually? If Manual then how?

airport utility will notify you if a firmware update is available
via airport utility > preferences, you have some options
for instance, if monitor airport wireless devices for problems is checkmarked, and a firmware update is available, airport utility will pop up occasionally to prompt you to upgrade.

  • Time Capsule fan always on

I just upgraded my 1st generation 1TB Time Capsule to a brand new 2TB TC. After 3 days, the fan came on full-blast and wouldn't spin down. Even when the TC was in a resting state, the fan remained on full-blast.
I tried resetting the TC. I tried powering it down and leaving it off for an hour before powering it back on. Neither fixed this issue.
I swapped it out and the new one was fine for 5 days, but the fan is now back on.
I'm wondering if anyone else has experience with this? I suppose I could've gotten 2 bad TCs in a row, but I'm starting to think this is a problem with the heat sensor that could be fixed with a firmware update. I don't want to deal with swapping out a 3rd if I'm going to end up with another noisy Time Capsule.

update: Using AirPort Utility, I rebooted the Time Capsule. This immediately caused the fan to spin back down. I remember this worked once with the first 2TB TC, but the fan eventually started blasting again. I'm curious to see how this holds up.
Either way, I'm fairly convinced that this is a firmware issue as I doubt the temperature inside my TC changed so drastically in the 5 seconds it took to reboot as to dramatically change the speed of the fan. This tells me that the fan speed was unnecessary to begin with and something should be done to fix the sensor.

  • Time Capsule assigns wrong IP to Macbook Pro upon wake

    Hi,
This is driving me nuts, I hope someone can help.
First off: I have latest OS 10.5.7, Airport, and Time Capsule updates available today. This problem has been occurring since before 10.5.7 came along, and before the last Time Capsule firmware update too.
Time Capsule is running in 5ghz N-only mode. The IP 10.0.1.37 is reserved/assigned by MAC address for the MBP.
About 40% of the time when I open the lid of the MBP to wake it, I have no internet access but can access the Time Capsule disk. When this happens, I check the IP of the MBP and it is assigned 10.0.1.101 which is incorrect. If I click the "renew DHCP" button from the TCP/IP tab in Network Settings, it immediately re-assigns 10.0.1.37 to the MBP and then internet works fine.
I previously did not have a static IP assigned to the MBP and it had the same problem.
I have tried both lengthening and shortening the DHCP lease time but still have this problem.
We have a black MacBook running the same OS purchased at the same time that does not experience this problem at all, and does not have an assigned IP.
An Airport Express with Xbox 360 attached is also on the TC wireless network with no problems.
I believe this issue started happening when I switched from N/G-compatible mode to N-only mode. I don't want to slow it back to G-compatible if possible.
    I welcome your suggestions. Thanks.

Time Capsule has now been assigning the MBP IP 10.0.1.105 now.
No one has any ideas on this?

  • Connect Time Capsule to BT Home Hub ?

I recently purchased the Time Capsule and want to connect it to my BT Home Hub, using the Airport Utility on the CD that comes with Time Capsule I follow all the on screen prompts about adding it to my existing wireless network. The Time Capsule updates and then a message comes up about it re-starting, after this message closes the Airport Utility shows an error message and says that no Apple wireless device can be found. I have to reset the Time Capsule for it to show up on the list again
My BT Home Hub is WEP protected and I've seen a few posts and forums around the web saying that the Time Capsule is WPA protected. If that was the case why does it give the option for WEP passwords.
Anybody else had this problem or knows of a workaround ? - I don't want to have to change my security settings on my BT Home Hub to WPA/ WPA2 as this will have a knock on issue with other items I use on my wireless network.
Any assistance would be appreciated as I spent 5 hours last night playing around with settings to no avail - All I managed to connect was the Time Capsule to my Mac (just to make sure it was working).
    Regards
    Andrew

Silly question, but how should I initially set up the Time Capsule to set it as a secondary router ? by creating a new wireless network or something else - do I need to attached the ethernet cable from my main wireless BT Home Hub for intial set up ? *NOTE: I currently have the Time Capsule attached by wireless to my Mac so therfore cannot access the internet at the same time without changing network.
I'm currently at work so forgive the abbreviated exact terms for the selection process for adding the Time Capsule, should I select the first option from the list when prompted ie "to add or replace device on wireless network..." as oposed to selecting "add device to existing wireless network" ?
I understand about setting it to "bridge" just wondered the best way to get to that point to allow me to do that.
Any further assistance would be very much appreciated
    Regards

I have just got back from a shopping trip with my shiny new Time Capsule. I have it set up as my wireless base station and am connected to the net. Problem I am having is that when Time Machine starts preparing to back up my MacBook Pro crashes and will not relaunch finder so I have to hold the power button down to turn off.
Why is it doing this??? Has anyone else had this problem??? How can I get my new shiny toy to work???
    Any info greatly received!

My time capsule worked great up until the May 1st update Time Capsule Update. A grey curtain comes down on the screen and a warning in several languages shows up and I have turn off my MBP. I am very frustrated with this problem and I can see I am not the only one:
