Error 0x80020022

Whenever I try to burn a DVD, I get the following error:
Burn error: 0x80020022 The device failed to respond properly, unable to recover or retry.
I looked at the Console Log and found this:
Finder: Burn started, Sat Sep 30 20:01:34 2006
Finder: Burning to DVD-R media with DAO strategy in MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-845C DPP9 via ATAPI.
Finder: Requested burn speed was 1x, actual burn speed is 1x.
Disabling UDF, track does not start at LBA 0 (start = 5888)
Finder: Burn underrun protection is supported, and enabled.
Finder: Burn failed, Sat Sep 30 20:01:35 2006
Finder: Burn sense: 5/64/00 Illegal Request, Illegal mode for this track or incompatible medium
Finder: Burn error: 0x80020022 The device failed to respond properly, unable to recover or retry.
The second to last line leads me to believe I'm using the incorrect brand of DVD-R (media type was a possible cause for this error when I searched for it)
Does anyone know if I'm correct? If not, what is causing this problem?

It's your media. I had the same trouble with 2 MacBooks. These MATSHITA drives are real fussy with media. Verbatim and Memorex won't work in mine. They work fine in my Power Mac G5 with a Pioneer drive.
I bought Ritek for the MacBook and they work fine.

  • Disk Utility: Burn error: 0x80020022 The device failed to respond...

I've been working on archiving a ton of video to DVD. I'm using Dual-Layer discs to minimize the amount of physical storage space needed for the finished project. I burned several discs in iDVD in July and regularly received errors. Then the drive suddenly stopped loading any type of media. Anything I inserted would spin briefly and then eject. Repaired permissions and followed steps outlined here and here. Took the Mac back to the store where I bought it (sadly, not an Apple Store - nearest one is 12 hrs away) where naturally it performed flawlessly for the store rep.
So I took it home and resumed burning, now saving as a disc image (ignoring iDVD's warning about the performance of DVDs burned this way) and using Disk Utility, since iDVD didn't seem to be reliable. Burned about 25 discs, error-free, in this fashion, then three days ago, got the error: "Unable to burn “Disc 19.img”. (The device failed to respond properly, unable to recover or retry.)"
Retried the same image, and it worked. Then burned two more in the same fashion with no errors. Today I got the same error again. Logs are identical for each failed burn, except for the time span between certain lines.
Price of DL media being what it is, I'd hate to keep ruining discs if there's something I can do to avoid it. I suppose it could be bad media, but it seems odd that I'd get two bum discs that close together after burning so many without issue. Checked the site and the forums, and there doesn't seem to be any answers. Does anyone have any ideas? (Other than "try a different brand of media." I've got a buttload of these discs and it's too late to return them now.) Even if it just helps determine where the issue lies. Warranty will be up soon, so if it's hardware related, I need to get it taken care of quick.

I have encountered the same problem. I have a Mac Book Pro from 2007, and it has gone through 3 DVD writers so far, all of which have ruined DVD+R DL disks. I have occasionally been able to burn one, but usually during verify, I get this error message:
Communication to the disk drive failed: 0x8002022
And disk utility fails with a "Invalid B-tree node size" error
Oddly, when I try to burn a disk near capacity (6.5Gb or more) it is more likely to fail than if I burn a smaller disk.
I've been using Memorex DVD+R DL disks, but I have used other brands in the past but they have failed, too. Out of about 50 disks so far, I have had success with about 5.

  • Error 0x80020022 when trying to burn a CD.

What is this Error 0x80020022 when trying to burn a CD.

I had that error too. Many times!
I tried a lot of different CDs.
And for two times I got new superdrives (warranty).
I thought it's over now, but today it came back... :-(
So, it's definitely NOT a broken superdrive.
But while reading all the posts with the same problem I began thinking about the lens.
Maybe it's not the scratches or printings or quality of the CDs.
Maybe it's the grease spots from the fingers???
So I rubbed it clean, only touching on the very outside and tried again. It worked!
I just wanted to share this.
    Could it be so easy?

  • After burning 3 dvds, got error 0x80020022 on MATSHITA DVD-R   UJ-845 Drive. Used 1x speed. iMac G5 PowerPC

    MATSHITA DVD-R   UJ-845:
    Error message: 0x80020022.
Got this after burning 5 other discs. Two of which didn't burn and ejected. When I inserted them again, they did not appear on desktop. Had to use Disc Utility to eject them.   After those two issues, this message showed up when re-trying the burn process.
What must I do to get this drive to burn the discs?

Thanks for the info.  I have another question pertaining to your answer:  "What speed would be best to use so the drive doesn't become HOT--- lowest speed for a longer period of time. . . OR . . . at a faster speed for a lesser time?
Also, I tried using it half-hour later and got same result.  I then waited 1 hour longer and it worked then.
Thanks to all letting me know to cool it off!

  • Broken SuperDrive? Error 0x80020022

I'm getting the 0x80020022 error when I try to burn in the finder, consistently at the halfway point.
Toast gives a a hardware error sense 0x03, 0x01. I ran Onyx's automation services and same thing happened. I don't think it is the media, because I've used different brands and good quality ones, too (Sony CDs and CDRWs).
I'm thinking of nuking my harddrive and reinstalling everything, but before I do do you think it might be an all hardware problem?

I am having the same exact problem and get this, I just had my Superdrive replaced because of problems spitting out dvds and not reading them randomly. Just got my MBP back and tried to burn a music CD and it gives me a read/burn error. It's ridiculous, I payed good money to have a good quality laptop. Even a $25 External drive I bought can burn CDs and CD-RWs. I even did everything Apple Care told me to do, create new login, wipe hard drive and reinstall. It still doesn't work, not in finder, nor Toast Titanium, nor iTunes, and not even in Disk Utility! Hopefully Apple will get on the ball about this issue that has seemed to surface out of nowhere. Sorry I can't help, but Apple Care couldn't even help me...

  • Superdrive Error 0x80020022

Like a lot of people here, I began receiving errors while burning CDs and DVDs after a certain Superdrive Update. I recently fixed my Superdrive using tips that a fellow user posted here about a month ago. My drive would start to burn DVDs/CDs and then an error window would pop up and the computer would eject what it was burning. It took me a while to find the answer I needed here, but I was able to remove the latest update and I was able to successfully burn things again.
I returned home from Spring Break yesterday to find that I'm getting errors while burning again. I was able to get a cap of the error message:
(Burning the disk failed because communication to the disk drive failed. Error code 0x80020022)
This is unbelievably frustrating. Does anyone know of any existing ways to fix this?
    Thank you.

These forums seem to be full of issues regarding burning CDs, DVDs and DVD DLs. I am beginning to think the error codes are just randomly generated lottery numbers. I get 0x80020042! There is one topic list devoted to this error code alone.
I haven't found anyone who has come up with a solution. My MacBook Pro (2.33ghz) has a MATSHITADVD-R UJ-85J and is about 15 months old. I have been burning CDs, DVDs, DVD-RWs and DVD-R DL consistently without problem for quite a while. I can still read optical media as long as it was recorded beforehand. I have tried erasing (quick and long) but this renders the discs unreadable in other computers that still write OK (eg. Quicksilver G4).
I was beginning to think that updating to 10.4.11 has disabled it and I would have to bite the bullet and go to Leopard but there seem to be just as many poor individuals out there suffering on Leopard.
I have been told that there seems to be an incompatibility between some of the drives/burners and the media that is used however, I can't seem to detect any pattern in the complaints on this forum.
WHAT I WANT TO KNOW IS WHAT IS APPLE DOING ABOUT IT? HELLO! APPLE! ANYONE LISTENING?
    This is totally unsatisfactory.

  • Burning cds error 0x80020022

i can burn music cds, but nothing else.
"communication to the disc drive failed (error code 0x80020022)"
    no, NOT using toast.

ok, seems to be disk-related. tried other disks and it works ok. i've read elsewhere that slot-loading superdrives have very tight tolerances. that appears to be the problem.
so the question is answered, and the problem is solved, although not entirely to my satisfaction. (i mean, i wasn't using off-brand disks to begin with. so now i have a whole stack of disks that don't work in my $1,500 imac. hrummph. maybe i should buy an external burner so i can use them up. the on-board drive reads them fine, it just won't burn them.)

  • DVD write error 0x80020022

I've tried twice to burn a folder to DVD and twice received the 0x80020022 error right at the end of the burn process. Drive or software related?

I changed brand of DVD; HP 16x worked just fine.

  • Will read, won't burn CD. Error 0x80020022. Help.

Wife has 13 inch white Intel Macbook about a year old. It has burned CDs fine all year.
This morning she turned it on, got black screen. We turned it off and on again and it booted fine. However we can't burn a CD. I don't know if two events are related. Get message "Burning the disc failed because communication to the disk drive failed" with error above.
I tried repair permissions, different media, restarts, etc. Nothing.
It reads fine. Everything else works. It just won't write. Any idea what happened. We have AppleCare but I wanted to ask before calling them. (Do you have to call first or can you just take it to store?)
    Thanks,
    Al

  • Dvd device communication error 0x80020022

Anyone seen this? Went to burn a dvd last night and spit out three of them with this error and no burn.
Did the usual, prefs, permissions, ran the chrons, rebooted-- same deal.
Is my drive dead or is there some sort of arcane something to do?
Applecare is still good on this machine, so hopefully they'll swap with me if all else fails.

    Hi Jim Cookman-
It is quite possible the drive has died. Does it work with CDs? It is possible that the DVD portion is no longer functioning. If it will not work with other media perhaps it is time to contact Apple.

Burning disc failed because communication to the disc drive failed. (error code 0x80020022)  Any suggestions??

Sadly, that error has umpteen causes, sometimes the drive is going out, sometimes it's bad media, sometimes a slower burn works, & rarely a Cleaning Disc helps.
Bad File names can even cause it...

  • Error code 0x8002006e burn issue

Hi, I have read all the threads on this issue and no answer.
Apparently this is happening a lot. I have burned one cd-r that worked on my new mac pro, (month old) and now I cannot burn anymore without the error code 0x8002006e unable to verify. I can although reinsert the disk and it will read and can open random files, but who trusts a disk with errors??
I have shut down all programs to burn the disk and have restarted my finder.
I've used Sony CD-R's and Memorex DVD-R which both worked fine on Tiger on my other computer,my pc dell laptop and my external duplicator.
    Running 10.5.2 all updated installed.
I have wasted about 7 cd-r / dvd-r both. I have the standard superdrive from apple, and I have installed a pioneer from an old imac g4, (apple techs said it was compatible), and received the error in both drives. I can burn via my external lightscribe duplicator and it works great.
Apple doesn't reopen until Monday and hopefully it's an issue that can be resolved now.
Any suggestions would be wonderful!!! Unfortunately the nearest Apple store is 2 hours away

I'm having this problem with CD-Rs on my new iMac. So far 3 good burns from the Finder against 5 bad. The first 4 failures died with 0x8002006E and the most recent with "Burning the disc failed because communication to the disc drive failed. (Error code 0x80020022)". Visually all the burns failed with about the same amount of the diskwritten. The DiscRecording.log visible in the Console app shows the writes failing at the same spot (except for the first which is a nonsense number):
    +Finder: Write (10), block: 4294967146, count: 32 -> 3/0C/00 Medium Error, Write error+
    +Finder: Write (10), block: 94240, count: 32 -> 3/0C/00 Medium Error, Write error+
    +Finder: Write (10), block: 94080, count: 32 -> 3/0C/00 Medium Error, Write error+
    +Finder: Write (10), block: 94144, count: 32 -> 3/0C/00 Medium Error, Write error+
    The last failure showed this:
+Finder: Burn sense: 4/09/01 Hardware Error, Tracking servo failure+
+Finder: Burn error: 0x80020022 The device failed to respond properly, unable to recover or retry.+
Which is beginning to look like a hardware or firmware failure (some other forums seem to suggesting that the problem started with a firmware upgrade). I'll be checking with Apple support directly.
One other oddity, I've tried selecting 8x burn speed - the default is 24x - but DiscRecording.log records this in every case:
+Finder: Requested burn speed was max, actual burn speed is 24x.+
For the record I'm not using a particularly reputable brand of media (Infiniti's from www.medea.co.uk, bought locally) because I thought I'd start with the cheap ones and work up. Messages in this forum and others suggest that the 0x8002006e problem occurs with all brands of media so I'm not confident that upgrading would fix the problem.

  • Intel Mini DVD+RW re-burns fail: 4/03/00 Hardware Error, Peripheral device

I can't re-write DVD+RW discs on my Intel Mini. The log says:
Backup: Burn sense: 4/03/00 Hardware Error, Peripheral device write fault
Backup: Burn error: 0x80020022 The device failed to respond properly, unable to recover or retry.
It happends with every Philips 4x DVD+RW I have after first burn. Also the log says it is trying to burn at 47x speed. Could this be why it is so noisy - it spins up like a rocket at 5 second intervals and then the disks can't be ejected.
Backup: Requested burn speed was 47x, actual burn speed is 4x.
Is this a sign of a bug or just an optimistic Backup?

I'm 99.99% sure this is an Intel Mini Superdrive problem now. I think it is incompatible with the Philips DVD+RW media. I will try to get new +RW media soon and see if I get joy with other formats.
I have taken the exact same media from the same pack and I can burn > erase FIVE times on the same disk, and not a single problem yet on my PPC G4 mini. I can only dream of doing this cycle once on my Intel Mini.
Intel mini (OS X 10.4.7) has:
    Vendor Product Rev
    MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-846 FM3J
PPC (OS X Server 10.4.7) mini has:
    Vendor Product Rev
    MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-845 D8PB
What's more the PPC mini makes almost zero noise, only one burst of quier "roar" near the start of erase. Contrast this to the constantly 5s roaring cycle that makes you raise your voice on the intel mini.
I believe my Intel Mini is either faulty or there is a firmware issue with the drive.
Can somebody else try Philips 4x DVD+RW discs in an Intel Core Duo and report their drive info?
    Thanks in advance

  • IDVD 5.0.1 mulitplexing/burning errors

Here goes, my factory installed combo drive broke, so I got a new CD/DVD Burner : (company installed)
    Manufacturer:     _NEC
    Model:     _NEC DVD_RW ND-1300A
    Revision:     1.05
    Drive Type:     CD-RW/DVD-RW
    Disc Burning:     Vendor Supported
My iDVD 3 worked once, then would not work, it wouldn't open properly and had to force quit every time.
I asked our IT dept to re-install it. They couldn't find the software re-install disc. Sooo they got out the iLife disc and installed iLife with iDVD 5.0.1.
    It won't work either.
When I try to burn a DVD, it proceeds like it is encoding, then at the end, it gives me an error message; Errors in Burning Process. I hit ok then it says: Multiplex Error, problem during multiplexing/burning. I am left with a blank DVD and lots of frustration.
I try to bring up old DVD projects I've previously made with iDVD 3, but it keeps trying to find files that it cannot find. Even though I have all the files saved.
I have Quicktime 7.0 that I installed a while ago and iDVD 3 did fine with those exported files.
I have FCP HD 4.5, I usually export as a Quicktime file, same as source, creating new media (stand alone file). Never had a problem before with iDVD 3 and my old combo drive.
I have Mac OS X (10.3.9). I have 40 Gb available on my start up drive (Mac HD).
As I said before, I sucessfully burned one or 2 discs before iDVD 3 started acting up on me and led me to install iDVD 5.0.1.
Here's my console report from today's attempt:

iDVD: Burn error: 0x80020022 The device failed to respond properly, unable to recover or retry.
I've read some of the threads on this problem already, with no luck so far.
    Any suggestions appreciated.
    Thanks,
    JBT

I am having a similar problem burning via IDVD 4. However, in my case the Superdrive in the installed original on a year old PowerMac G5. This is the second of two similar FCE projects each 90min. The first burned fine but the second one gets to stage 4 and stalls. The striped progress bar moves but the burning never takes place even after hours. Hitting the cancel button has occasionally given the message "errors were found during the burning process. Logical end-of-file reached during read operation".
I have tried the follwing remedies without success:
    1) taping the video back to the camcorder and reimporting it into IMovie. It looked fine even in the IDVD preview but would not burn
    2) I did an archive and install of the OS including the ILife apps
Even more perplexing is the fact that a short segment of the project in question burned just fine did a two hour long video saved as a disc image.
I would greatly appreciate any assistance. Thanks, Jay
