Error -1 Time Machine Cannot Backup

Hello,
I keep gettign the following error when trying to do a time machine back up after the first few back ups
The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data-1/xxxxxxxxx.sparsebundle” could not be accessed (error -1).
Everytime I need to find the old back up and delete it and then run teh whole process from the bengining. This kind of defeats the whole purpose of the time machine back up system.
My other macbook pro (retina) laptop has no issues in backing up, its only my imac that does this.
Thanks

It is a standard issue that has been around since forever.
See Q17 here.

  • HT3275 Time machine cannot backup due to "The backup disk image "/Volume/Data/Dave's Macbook Pro."sparse bundle" is already in use." Does anyone know what this means and how to fix it??

My time machine is sending me a message; "The backup disk image "/Volume/Data/Dave's Macbook Pro "sparse bundle" is already in use". As a result, the time machine cannot complete a backup. Any suggestions?

Look at the more like this column on the right.. this is the most common problem reported here.
You need to restart the TC.. that is all..
Pull out the power cord.. count to 10.. plug in power cord.
There are a few occasions where this fails.. see C12 http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html

  • Time machine cannot backup my 4GB Macbook Pro to 500GB external drive

I have used Time Machine to back up my MBP (4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3) for over a year. I back it up to a 500GB LaCie external drive that currently has ~272 GB of available space. I am no longer able to back up to this drive via TM due to insufficient space, per TM. I recently upgraded my OS to Yosemite OS X 10.10, but I'm not sure the backup problem coincides with my upgrade. I launch TM, the back up begins but times out due to unavailable space on my LaCie, which seems incorrect. I'd appreciate input/ideas on how to resolve this.

  • Why time machine cannot backup applicaitons

    why?

It does backup Applications. However, you may have experienced this bug that Pondini discovered: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5125969

My Time Machine cannot complete a backup.  The error message reads "The backup disk image "/Volumes/Brad Blocksidge's Time Caps/Macintosh.sparsebundle" is already in use.  Suggestions???

Most common error reported here.. absolutely stock standard what you expect with Mountain Lion.
Restart the TC will fix 98% of them..
Pull out the power cord.. count to 10.. plug in the power cord.

  • HT3275 Time machine cannot complete my backup

Time machine cannot complete my backup because 'an error occurred while creating the backup folder'.  How do I solve this problem?

Failed again this morning.  I checked my logs and one thing it showed was, "Error: (-50) Creating directory..."  I saw this...

    one thing you can try
Open system prefs and go to spotlight, in the privacy section add your Macintosh HD and any other drives you back up.  Give it a few seconds then remove your Macintosh HD and any other drives you added.  Close system preferences.  Watch the spotlight symbol on the top menu bar "looks like a magnifying glass".  It should have a dot in it as in is indexing all your drives again.  When the indexing is over (it can take a long time of your drive is big) now try to create a new backup with time machine...."
As usual, it's gonna take a couple days to see if it works.  I'll let y'all know...and y'all should try it also, and let us know.

  • HT1338 Error preparing Time Machine backup disc- size error usually not being multiples of 512, encryption

Trying to encrypt Time Machine backup disc getting message  - Error preparing Time Machine backup disc- size error usually not being multiples of 512, encryption.

    I got the same problem.
But I think it cannot be related to not being a multiple of 512.
As when I devide the number of bytes 3.000.592.982.016 by 512 is equals 5860533168.
    3.000.592.982.016 / 512 = 5860533168.
So what could be the real problem?
    With kind Regards

  • Recurring directory errors in Time Machine backup

I'll try to make this brief:
    Mac Pro 2 x 2.66 GHz Xeon
4 - 500 GB internal drives set up as 2 - striped 1 TB RAIDS
    OS X 10.7.3
For years, I have used Time Machine to backup RAID #1 to RAID #2 with no errors at all. Recently, backups have been failing every few days. Disk Warrior rebuilds of the directory on the Time Machine backup RAID fix the problem for a few days.
When the problem was not being solved, I reinitialized and zeroed both drives in RAID #2. S.M.A.R.T. tests show the drives as fully functional. I checked both drives for bad blocks (using TechTool Pro 6.0.4), found none, and recreated RAID #2.
Every few days, the Time Machine backup fails and Disk Warrior finds numerous problems with the directory file on RAID #2, mostly iNode overlaps.
All tests on RAID #1 are clean.
Does anyone have thoughts on what I should try next, short of replacing drives that test out as functioning perfectly?

Installed GoFlex 1.5 TB external drive on my iMac running OS X 10.7.4 and error says Time Machine can't create a backup folder.   Any solutions?

Well, to unmount the drive, you can use the Terminal application.
Start in Applications > Utilities > Terminal.
When the Terminal window opens, type - without the quotes and with the space at the end - this:
    "diskutil unmount "
Then drag the icon of the unmounted drive from the desktop into the Terminal window - the drive location will be added to the end of the command above.  It should look something like this:
    diskutil unmount /Volumes/volumename
    Then press enter (return).
That should unmount the drive. Now you can try the Time Machine process again with perhaps a different interconnect cable for the GoFlex.

  • "Permission denied" error when trying to open Time Machine sparse backup image

    Hello,
After a hard drive failiure, I'm trying to access my Time Machine backup from a different computer, but when double-clicking on the sparsebackup file I get the following error:
The Time Machine backup was done wirelessly, to a hard drive plugged in via USB to an AirPort Extreme router. I've now connected the hard drive (via FireWire) to my backup computer.
I suppose I could plug the drive back into the router and see if that works, but restoring via WiFi will take FOREVER — the sparsebundle is 750 GB.
I've tried repairing permissions and rebooting, but that did not solve the problem.
    Any ideas?

I think you will need to connect to the USB attached to the airport..
But you can use ethernet not wireless.
If you are using a Mac without an ethernet port then get a thunderbolt to ethernet or if no thunderbolt, then usb to ethernet adapter.. that is the second best by a long way.
I have always been able to open the sparsebundle on disks .. So unfortunately the sparsebundle could be corrupt.. you can try to repair it.

If that is the case simply reboot the TC.. or if that fails, reboot the whole network, restarting in correct order..
