Error -1309 large file transfers under Mac OS extended format

When transferring large video files from one firewire drive to another in OSX panther on Rocstor firewire media formatted in Mac OS extended, I am getting error -1309 and lots of problems. The new 250 gig even became unreadable, data was lost, and I had to reformat. It hung norton disk doctor and sometimes the OS reported that copy times for 7 gig files would be 936 hours.
This is a brand new rocstor drive, and frankly I do not think the drive is the source of the problem, (but who knows?) perhaps the files have become corrupted.
For example, if I try to drag a 4.8 gig file from a 75 gig firewire to a 250 gig newly formatted firewire drive, (with 230 gigs open space), it starts copying, then a minute later it stops and tells me the disk is full!
Neither diskwarrior nor norton disk doctor have found a problem with the firewire media or the files. (well, there was one, "a major error was found in the ALternate Volume HEader Block, last mounted version is invalid", but Diskdoctor corrected this) I have researched error -1309 on the internet, but there is surprisingly only a sparse amount of info about it.
On the first copy operation a few weeks ago there was not really a problem (about 61 gigs worth of quicktimes). The files copied fine. Now these same files -- some of them, especially the large ones, up to 7.5 gigs, are refusing to copy from the (second or third) generation firewire drive to yet another firewire drive.
Any insights on this puzzling problem would be appreciated.
thanks

Status update:
With a brand new Rocstor firewire 250 gig drive I am unable to record video without getting a FILE I/O error within 2-4 minutes, or dropped frames. I had just reformatted the firewire Mac OS Extended. This drive is just a couple of days old. I have other Rocstor firewire drives that do not seem to have this problem. I have been using a couple of rocstors for more than 2-3 years. Furthermore, the other rocstor drives also contained the same types of files, in an earlier generation.
The only I way I could have "contaminated" the newer drives was to attempt to copy quicktime files over 4 gigs to the funky drive. This has happened twice now, once with a 300 gig rocstor "400" less than a year old, and now with a 250 gig rocstor "400" just a couple days old. (Incidentally, I have put in two tech calls to them about this matter this week. Their recommendation was to reformat mac os extended.)
Well, this is puzzling.

  • Error code 0 when copying a large file to a Mac OS Extended formatted drive

I always back up my photos manually by dragging a folder containing many folders containing many photos into an external drive that I immediately formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) the day I bought it 2 years ago. I now run into a Error Code 0 when I do this. The "mother" folder is 240 GB in size. As I stated, this drive has been formatted for the Mac, so I don't understand why it's (apparently) running into a problem peculiar to FAT32-formatted drives. My iMac has 16 GB of RAM, of which 10 GB was free, the last time I tried to do this.

    Well, you did mention...
so I don't understand why it's (apparently) running into a problem peculiar to FAT32-formatted drives
I kind of had to assume at that point the source drive was the one you formatted as Mac OS Extended two years ago, and the target drive was FAT32. If not, then I'm not sure why you mentioned FAT32 at all.
In that same thinking, error code 0 is directly related to FAT formatted drives.

  • Disk Full Error on large file transfers to 160 Gb classic

I have around 90 Gb free and when I try to upload a 8 Gb file, it pops up an error saying the disk is full. I wiped all the free space on it, and then proceeded to upload around 15 Gb of smaller files no problem. But every time I try for that 8Gb one it errors on me.
Any ideas why this is or how to fix it?

    Hi,
if I remember correctly the iPod for Windows uses the FAT32 file system for its own harddisk.
The FAT32 file system can only accommodate single files that are smaller than 4 GB. No matter how much free space there is on your iPod, you can't copy files that are larger than that.
On a Windows PC there is no solution for this as it is not possible to change the iPods File System.

  • Transferring large files from my mac to pc

Hi guys, i'm trying to transfer a large file from my mac to my pc. Its over 7GB and my mac doesnt have a DL dvd burner so that's out of the question. I've tried transferring it over the network however the eta is 2 days which is a little too long. I've tried putting the file on my external HD but when its formatted into mac os extended my laptop does not recognise it and when the drive is formated in ms dos (fat) i am unable to put the file on to the drive (error code 0)
I've run out of ideas what to do so was hoping someone on here could help
    Thanks

    Hi and welcome to Discussions,
have a look at this little Windows program http://hem.bredband.net/catacombae/hfsx.html
It enables Windows to read from HFS-formatted (OSX) harddisks.
Might be the easiest and cheapest solution, as others are not free.
MacDrive would be another option, but is not free (but has more features).

    Stefan

  • If you delete a large file from the mac hard drive does it also remove it from time machine on external hard drive

if you delete a large file from the mac hard drive does it also delete it from time machine on the external hard drive ?

As the others say, no, the backup copy won't be deleted immediately, but it will eventually.
If you want to delete all backups of a selected item, such as for space or security reasons, see #12 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.

  • WAP4410N stops responding on large file transfers

Also experience this issue, latest firmware (7/17/2010 version).  Definately related to large file transfers.  Or, viewing videos (e.g. youtube) over RDP.
Only power cycle gets responsiveness back.  Laptops remain connected, but with "Limited Connectivity".

There's a limit of 10MB for a single RTMP message in LCDS, you're probably running into this but you're supposed to get a "TCMessageTooLargeException" when you go over 10MB. I think there might be a bug around bubbling this exception but either way, I think you should try to chop your file in 10MB chunks when using RTMP.

  • I have an iMac OS 10.7.5  I have been sent a disc using Mac OS extended format which I am unable to open.  Any suggestions?

I am using an iMac OS10.7.5  I have been sent a disc using Mac OS extended format but I cannot open it.  Any suggestions.  I have also tried on my laptop (10.5.8) similarly without success

The disc appears to b an ordinary CD and it contains the text of a manual which comes quarterly.  In the past I have had problems because it came as an exe file and I had to contact the organization concerned to get an alternative Mac friendly disc.  In this instance the information under Find Info is that it is a volume created on 18 September 2013. It is formatted as indicated and its capacity is 135 KB.  There is no indication what I should use to open it.

  • Understanding Mac OS Extended format for DVD media

I am typically burn my files and folders on the Desktop. The reason I do this is that I hope the files will be readable on both a Mac and a PC. They seem to be do that just fine. But it was not until today that I noticed that these DVD's end up being formatted as "Mac OS Extended" even though Windows XP with Service Pack 3 can read them just fine. But I also have an older DVD that was burned the same way and also says it is formatted in the "Mac OS Extended" format. But that DVD is not readable on my PC even though it is readable on my Macbook. I am trying to understand if something changed in the Mac operating system that changed with this format. I am also trying to understand the Mac OS Extended format and primarily what is the BEST way to burn a DVD that works on a PC and a Mac.
Thank you for any help you might be able to offer.
    Garry

On the Mac, it says the format of the DVD is Mac OS Extended but when you run it on WIndows XP with SP3, it says the DVD is formatted as UDF (Universal Disc Format) which I think is interesting because I burned several DVD's on my PC in the UDF format version 2.5, which is the latest, but the Mac OS could not read them. So it must be an older version of UDF Apple is using or some type of custom format that Apple uses.

  • HT1604 Is there any difference between Mac OS Extended Format and ExFat?

Is there any difference between Mac OS Extended Format and ExFat?  I read in a blog that the ExFat was a good way to format an external drive because it avoided many of the pitfalls of the other formats, as long as it is supported by the operating system.  I tried to format my new Seagate drive, and got an invalid option error.  I was able to format it in Mac OS Extended format.  Can you please tell me if this is similar to ExFat.  Thanks.

The Mac OS format can only be natively read to and written to by a computer running the Mac OS. This creates a problem if the user wishes his external, or other drive to have seamless compatibility between two different OS's, such as Windows and Mac. Yes, there are software solutions that enable a Windows PC to work with a drive formatted as Mac OS, but it gets complicated if you wish that drive to have compatibility "on the fly" with any PC you may encounter.
It turns out that the format known as ExFAT is able to be natively read by both a Mac and a PC, without running any additional drivers on either machine. ExFAT also doesn't have some of the limitations of FAT32, which both OS's will also read/write.
ExFAt is not perfect though. Formatting the drive as Mac OS Extended has some advantages on a Mac. First, it is the only format that permits all functionality of the Mac OS, such as using the drive for Time Machine.
ExFAt is often thought of as the best middleground for an external partition/drive that needs to have easy cross platform compatibility between a Mac and  PC running Vista or Windows 7.

  • Disk Utilty - Reformating Windows-formated drive to MAC OS Extended Format

Can a drive previously formatted as Windows FAT32 or NFTS subsequently be reformatted to the MAC OS Extended format, via OS X Panther Disk Utility's Erase and/or Partition options?
If so, is it straightforward to do, or are there any potential pitfalls?

Hello! Yes, it should work fine to use disk utility to format the drive to HFS+. Tom

  • IPod cyclical redundancy check/Parameter Incorrect error on large files

I’ve started getting errors on some large files (seemingly random) that I copy to my 5.5G 40GB iPod. (They’re .tivo files from my Tivo so I can watch shows on another computer, and my iPod is FAT32 used only with Windows.)
The files will copy without error, but then when I try to copy them off the iPod, on one system I’ll get a “cyclical redundancy check” error, and on another in the same spot with the same file I’ll get “Cannot copy <name of file>: The parameter is incorrect.
It seems to be happening just recently, and randomly. Maybe I’ll copy 8 shows over, and only one will give me that error.
When I get the error, the iPod’s disk activity indicator will have stopped spinning. It’s like it’s quit trying to transfer anything. I’ll get errors for a short while after that if I try to access anything on disc, but then it’s like the iPod wakes up again, the disc spins back up, and my computer can access files again.
I’ve restored my iPod recently, and run a basic check on the disk using Windows’ built-in disk utility.
Any other ideas what’s going wrong? Nothing’s changed about my systems since this started yesterday.

  • TimeCapsule (and AirPort extreme too) hangs on large file transfers

    Greetings,
I got a following problem. I had install AirPort connected to my router with copper and extend network with TimeCapsule. TimeCapsule have two USB drives attached, AirPort - one USB. When I am transferring a large file, in a magnitude 2-3Gb or multiple simultaneous transfers of smaller files to/from those USB drives, depending on which drive I am using the AirPort or TimeCapsule get crashed. For plain user it is looks like as of sudden, data transfer stops, led in a front keeps green, and I can not reconnect to the drives. If I powercycle TC or AES everything get back to normal. Are there anyone else experiencing the same issues and if yes, what would be solution ?
    Thank you.

I think we have tried almost every combination of disabling Large Send Offload, TCP offload, IP SEC Offloading, VMQ and Receive Side Scaling possible - in the various places there are - although I will be quite honest - as there are 3 places to do this
for each Server (the related physical and virtual NICs on the HV Server, and also the NIC in the VM) it is possible we may have missed an iteration...
During our testing we have noticed that the symptoms of the problem gets worse the higher the transfer speed is. For example if you transfer to the VM from a desktop with a 100Mbs NIC, there will be subtle lag and a transfer speed of say 10 or so KBs ,
if you use a device with a 1Gbs NIC, you on average achieve 50-70 KBs transfer speeds and the higher the number, the worse the GUI / Server locks up (although the transfer completes just fine).
We also tried throttling the bandwidth via the 2012 GUI - to see if that helped, but none of the changes we made seemed to work, and we did not have time to try the powershell way of doing this.
We did replace one of the VM's NIC with a legacy one as part of our testing today, and now data transfers to the VM from a PC with a 1Gbs NIC run slower at around 30-35 KBs and the are no noticeable GUI freezes, although during the large transfer
it looks like 1 in every 30-40 packets is dropped in a continual ping that runs during the transfer period.
We have done a lot of cable replacing today (out of diligence) but there seems to be no noticeable issue. We also tried and older NC380T dual port NIC we had available and used the standard driver Windows offered instead of an HP one, but the problem
was identical no matter which NIC we used.

  • Copying large files freezes other Macs on the network

    Hello everyone,
since we added a Mac Pro to our network, other clients sometimes hang and have to disconnect to a server (Xserve), when we copy large files (100MB and up) to that server with the Mac Pro.
Like the other G5's, the faster G4's and some PC servers, it is connected on gigabit speed.
Can someone help me to pinpoint this problem, or give me more information on finding the cause?
    Maybe this can be usefull:
We replaced the cable by a Cat6 UTP cable.
Slowing down to 100mbit did not solve the problem.
We could not reproduce the problem when connected directly to the Xserve (no switch or patch pannel, only the cat6 cable).
Many thanks in advance for your help.

    Hello,
yesterday, may boss, ordered some people to check the cabling and connections in our network.
They revealed several problems and advice to replace all cabling to cat6 or cat7.
Is the MP susceptible to network imperfections? Our other G5's never suffered from network flaws (now the ethernet cards are Intel instead of 'Apple' design...)
I did some other tests, and set the MTU to 750 instead of de default 1500. Without success.
I am trying to finde som info in the logfiles, but do not seam to find any details about the network problems. Where should I look? The system log, netinfo log is empty...
    Greetings,
    peter.

  • Error copying large files from USB HDD to MyCloud

I am trying to copy a some large files (several GB) from a USB HDD to mycloud drive using the WD My cloud software as described in this post:http://community.wd.com/t5/WD-My-Cloud/Transferring-Large-Amounts-of-Data-to-the-My-Cloud-and-a-Coupl-e/td-p/620219but the copy grinds for some time and then fails. Is there a limit on the file size or amout of data that can be copied in one operation. I am using latest software and firmware. Windows 8.1 if that is relevant. Thanks in advance.

No, I'm using copy and paste within WD My Cloud for desktop app to avoid having to pull the files across the network. Source USB HDD is 2TB WD Elements and I am using the original USB 3 cable supplied with it connected direct into MyCloud device. I have also checked the USB disk with chkdsk while plugged into Windows. The files seem to copy if I do it over the network, but its very slow.Ah that was one small detail left out of your initial post that changes things. It is generally NOT recommended to connect a USB drive directly to the My Cloud if copying a large amount of files (or files in excess of 30 or more GB's). Slow transfer speed over the USB port on the back of the WD My Cloud units are a known issue. Search this site and you'll find lots of threads on it. The previous posts indicate better ways to copy the data from a external USB drive to the WD My Cloud.
