Error 1402 HELP

Thank you first for reading my post. I have read over the fourms for a few days now before posting. I would like to list some facts about my system and myself. I am very computer savy and I own and built this computer. I don't buy stock computers I have always built my own.
My computer:
OS Windows Vista Ultimate 64 Bit OEM
Asus Mother Board
6 GB Ram
1 GB Nvida Card... Pc has all the bells and whistles $2,000 invested
Windows Defender
Malwarebytes
Super Anti Spyware
Nortons 360
Adobe 9.3.4
Now this the registery problem, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Run\Optional Components\IMAIL now when I go to my regedit and manualy look for this key I can't find it past Run. I can search all the way through the key's and get to run and there are no further entries after that file. So I'm guessing that maybe Either its missing and I don't have a backup to reinstall it or Adobe is having a major problem.
Solutions I have tried:
Ankit_Jain's Solution. I can't get this command prompt to work even with manual or copy and paste and Im aware of the mistype she put foward and corrected.
1. Download Microsoft's SubinACL tool from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=e8ba3e56-d8fe -4a91-93cf-ed6985e3927b&displaylang=en
2. Install the same by double clicking on the "subinacl.msi" just downloaded.
3. Open Command Prompt window through the Run Dialog Box (Start -> Run and type "cmd" and click OK)
4. In the Command Prompt window, type in the following commands:
    i. cd /d "%ProgramFiles%\Windows Resource Kits\Tools" (Hit Enter)
   ii. subinacl  /subkeyreg  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\OptionalComponents /grant=administrators=f /grant=SYSTEM=f /grant=USERS=f  /grant="Creator Owner"=f (Hit Enter)
Registery Mechanic: Paid the $29.99 to get this and it still isn't working. Though I continue to get some errors for some of my keys.
Removing Adobe 9.3.4 Can't be done through control panel program remove. It says I don't have sufficent access. I built this machine, that means I own it and thats the bottom line.

Additional information    "Error 1402 occurs when the Windows installer is unable to read a particular registry key. Installation can fail because the Acrobat or Reader installer attempts to clean up registry keys of previous versions of Acrobat or Reader. This cleanup is necessary to avoid conflicts with Acrobat or Reader plug-ins and add-ins for third-party software" This is in their words. Seems it can't read it to Uninstall Also or it removed my key during INSTALL.
As you can see I have put some effort into this and I own the machine and I am the Administrator. I build computers from parts and this is the finest I have built todate. Some help would be welcomed.

Hi,
Thanks for the very descriptive post!! The information came in handy while trying to figure out what went wrong in your case.
Ankit_Jain's Solution. I can't get this command prompt to work even with manual or copy and paste and Im aware of the mistype she put foward and corrected.
1. Download Microsoft's SubinACL tool from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=e8ba3e56-d8fe -4a91-93cf-ed6985e3927b&displaylang=en
2. Install the same by double clicking on the "subinacl.msi" just downloaded.
3. Open Command Prompt window through the Run Dialog Box (Start -> Run and type "cmd" and click OK)
4. In the Command Prompt window, type in the following commands:
    i. cd /d "%ProgramFiles%\Windows Resource Kits\Tools" (Hit Enter)
   ii. subinacl  /subkeyreg  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\OptionalComponents /grant=administrators=f /grant=SYSTEM=f /grant=USERS=f  /grant="Creator Owner"=f (Hit Enter)
Since, you are using a 64 bit machine, the command 4(i) needs to altered slightly to:
i. cd /d "%ProgramFiles (x86)%\Windows Resource Kits\Tools" (Hit Enter)
Apologies for the confusion caused while trying out the same earlier. Hope it works this time around.
Regards
Ankit

  • Help with installation of (Error 1402) Reader?

Boils down after trying everything from Toatal virus scan to making sure Java is enabled to trying other browsers; I do not have a HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE32 in my registry. I have HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE! I had to use a special piece of software to get Reader off my computer so I could try reinstalling because it couldn't find that registry path. I did get it off but no way to put it back on - error 1402!!! Do I need to create that path in the registry? Had same problem with another piece of software. Please help. [email address removed]

You  could try using the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility to remove all traces of any existing versions of Reader prior to installing the version you want and updating it as required.  This utility is no longer supported by Microsoft because it can conflict with Win 7, but you can still find it in sites like http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459

  • I still have problems with Error 1402 in Adobe Reader 9.5 Installation.  Can anyone help me?

Hi, I have a Compaq Presario C500 Laptop with Windows Vista installed.  For the past year, I've been trying to upgrade from Adobe Reader version 8 to either a version 9 or 10.  However, when I download and begin the installation, I always get two error messages:
The first one is the error 1402 could not open key.  The registry path is HKEY LOCAL MACHINE\Software\Classes\PDFShellServer.PDFShelllnfo2\CurVer.  Verify you have sufficient access to that key or contact your support personnel.
The second one occurs when it retrys:  It say error 1402 could not open key.  The registry path is HKEY LOCAL MACHINE\Software\Classes\AcroAccess.AcrobatAccess\CurVer.  Verify you have sufficient access to that key or contact your support personnel.
I went to the troubleshooting page and followed the instructions given.  But when I go into the Permissions area and do as the instructions say, regardless whether I click Apply or OK, I get a Windows Security message saying - Unable to set new owner on Cur Ver, Access is denied.
This does this no matter how many times I repeat the instructions for troubleshooting.  Can anyone recommend another possible solution?  Thanks!

First be sure you run RegEdit as Administrator
Right click the key in the left hand pane ... select permissions from the context menu
In the permissions dialog, click the advanced button.
In the advanced security settings dialog switch to the Owner tab
I assume your usercode is a member of the local Administrators group
Click the Replace owner on subcontainers and objects box.
If Administrators is NOT the owner, select it in the change owner to box...press Apply...OK.
You are now back at the Permissions dialog box.
Select Administrators and give them Full control by selecting the Full Control checkbox in the Allow column...press Apply ... Ok
It has been a while since I have had to do this ... so I might be off a little on the steps.

One thing that can be done to clean Registry values is to run a Registry cleaner, like CCleaner. I would strongly suggest that you first manually create a System Restore Point, and then take advantage of CCleaner's offer to create a Registry backup, just in case. Run it several times to clean out all vestiges of PrE 1.0.
Also, getting back to the problems with PrE 1.0 and burning, please list the full specs. on your system. It is likely that what caused the burns to fail in the earlier version will still be there, and cause problems with PrE 8 too. Pay special attention to your I/O sub-system, i.e. your HDD's, their size, speed, amount of defragmented free space, controller type and how they are allocated.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
PS - are you running as Administrator? You should be.
Also, when you go to install, make sure that all AV, pop-up blocking and spysweeping software is turned OFF, along with all Windows firewalls, etc.

  • Error 1402 refers to a non-existent key.  Can't install or uninstall to fix printer driver issues.

I can't install or uninstall Acrobat 9.5.3. I keep getting Error 1402, which states that I don't have permission to modify a key that doesn't exist in RegEdit: \UNKNOWN\Components\Lots of numbers. Even Revo Pro can't uninstall it.
I am trying to fix a problem with converting documents from Word. The process stalls because Acrobat can't find its printer drivers. The suggested solution is to uninstall and reinstall. I can't do either.
    Many thanks for your help.

The dead end is the error message (1402) that Acrobat can't modify the key: UNKNOWN/Components/Lots of numbers. It lacks permission.  The process stops and rolls back all changes. However, this weird key can't be found using RegEdit.
I'm using Windows 7 Home Pro 64-bit. I can't find any PDF*.dll files in System 32 or SysWow64. How can I put them there?

Please, does anyone could help me with this problem? What should I do? , How to be solved?
    I would appreciate any help.
    Thanks!

Curtis and Gene - I had problems with Adobe reader 8, crashes and same error (invalid plugin detected) after installing SP1 on Vista. I replaced Adobe reader with the newer 8.1.2 and that seems to have fixed it (as well as supposedly remedying other security exposures). You have to de-install your current Adobe version first, before attempting to download and install 8.1.2. BTW, it failed the first time with a nasty message and crash ( possibly because I hadn't de-installed the older version first) but succeeded nicely on the second try.

  • Cannot uninstall Adobe Reader 7.0.8...keep getting "Error 1402" message..

Hello. I use Windows XP Home Edition. I am trying to uninstall Adobe Reader 7.0.8 so I can then install version 9, but I am not able to uninstall 7.0.8. During the uninstallation process, I get the following error message:
*****Error 1402. Could not open key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\CLSID\{C523F39 F-9C83-11D3-9094-00104BD0D535}\Programmable.
Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel.*****
I went to another forum and asked for some help there...the guy there gave me some steps to follow, and I did so. Here they are:
    1. Deleted "Adobe Reader Speed Launch" shortcut from Startup folder.
    2. Deleted the Adobe folder (which contained 2 other folders: Acrobat 6.0 and Acrobat 7.0) from C:\My Computer\Local Disk\Program Files. I had to use a separate program (provided by my helper who gave me these steps to follow) called "Unlocker" to accomplish this, since, originally, when I tried to delete this Adobe folder, I would get a message saying "Cannot delete pdfshell.dll: Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use." Unlocker solved this problem, and was able to delete the Adobe folder.
    3. Rebooted machine
    4. Ran CCleaner's registry cleaner
    5. Rebooted machine again
    6. Tried using CCleaner's "Uninstall" utility to uninstall Adobe Reader 7.0.8. When I tried this, I got the same "Error 1402" message as listed above.
    7. Backed-up my registry
    8. Tried to just delete this particular offending key using RegEdit...but when I tried, I got a message saying this:
    *****ERROR DELETING KEY
Cannot delete Programmable: Error while deleting key.*****
I really need some assistance with this...at the moment, Adobe Reader 7.0.8 still seems to be installed on my machine (it's still listed in "Add/Remove Programs" in the Control Panel, and it still shows up in CCleaner's Uninstall Utility)...despite the fact that, as I mentioned above, I used Unlocker to delete the Adobe folder from Program Files. Also, at this moment, no pdf files will open on my machine...so this is quite an urgent situation. Does anyone know what else I should do now? Is there something I need to do regarding the "Permissions" for this particular registry key?
    I appreciate anyone's assistance...thanks.

Hi..I went ahead and ran the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility. I used it to remove "Adobe Reader 7.0.8." After doing this, I checked in "Add/Remove Programs" in the Control Panel to make sure that AR 7.0.8 was gone, and it thankfully was. Then I deleted the WICU, ran CCleaner's registry cleaner, rebooted, and tried to install Adobe Reader 9.0. When I tried this, I got the following error message (this occurred during the time when the installer was "writing system registry values"):
    *****ADOBE READER 9 INSTALLER INFORMATION
Error 1402. Could not open key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\CLSID\{C523F39 F-9C83-11D3-9094-00104BD0D535}\ProgID.
Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel.*****
What should I do now? Do I need to do something about the "permissions" for this key?
    Thanks to anyone with advice...

  • Error 1402: Could not open key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE... During Installation

    Hello,
When I try to install LabView (v7.1 or v8.0) I get the following error:
"Error 1402: Could not open key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\LVDB.Application\CLSID. Verify that
you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support
    personnel."
I have full administrator privileges on my computer and I am able to
modify that key manually using the registry editor. When I click the
"Yes" button to continue the installation it will complete but then
when I launch LabView I get the following error:
"The requested feature is unavailable on "localhost"".
Can you help me get LabView up and running?
    Thanks,

The Adobe knowledgebase article actually pointed me in the right
direction and I was able to solve the issue. Thanks to all who gave
advise, you guys are the reason these forums work!
The error message was actually coming from the Microsoft Installer, not
from anything related to National Instruments. Also, ironically, what
the message said was spot on with one exception, while I personally had
access to the registry key, the installer didn’t. What I ended up doing
was going into the registry using regedit and setting the permissions
on the key in questions such that “Everyone” had full access. After
that I uninstalled LabView then reinstalled and it worked fine this
time. The step by step follows:
    1) Open the registry editor by selecting "Run" from the start menu and then typing in "regedit".
    2) Browse through the registry and select the entry mentioned in the error message.
    3) Choose "Permissions..." from either the edit menu or by right-clicking on the registry key's parent directory.
    4) Click the "Advanced" button to add a new user.
    5) Type in "Everyone" as the new user and click OK (it may not be
necessary to give everyone full control but this is what I did and it
    worked).
    6) Configure the permissions for user "Everyone" to "Full Control"
    7) Uninstall LabView (if necessary) and re-install.
    Best regards,
    -Ben

  • Error 1402: Could not open key UNKNOWN\SliderCtrl.SlideCtrlProxy\CLSID

I have two users.  User A wrote an application using LabVIEW 7.1, including an installer, and gave said application and installer to User B.  User B has 8.0 and 8.1 LabVIEW RTE's installed properly.  When trying to run the application installer, or just the 7.1 RTE installer alone, the following error occurs every time:
Error 1402.  Could not open key:

I took the registry info from my machine (had 7.1 installed on it at one time; currently has 8.2 and 8.5), exported everything with "SlideCtrl" in it, imported those into User B's registry, double checked the permission in the appropriate places, re-ran ... same problem.   Help?

I found the answer on my own, documenting for the next poor soul ... this was under WinXP
    * Go into regedt32
    * Right-click on HKCR and select "Permissions" -OR- Click on HKCR and choose Edit->Permissions
    * Add the current user and set permissions for Full Control and Read.
It is NOT sufficient to give "Everyone" Full Control and Read, it needs that user id.  Brilliant ... current user is not part of "Everyone".
