Error '-14120'

Ok I am getting a little fed up of Leopard server now. Not only does the iCal server not work for me but I am now getting the following errors when trying to create users or change which groups they are part of...
"Error '-14120' occurred while processing a command of type 'setMembership' in plug-in 'servermgr_accounts'"
and
"The server reported the error '-14120' while trying to create the user."
I think somehow I have lost permission to create users etc? Strange seeing as I am the main administrator.
Anyone got any bright ideas?

I get the same thing when trying to create a group or a user. Here are my system log errors:
Nov 14 05:57:48: --- last message repeated 1 time ---
Nov 14 05:57:48 macserver servermgrd[2161]: servermgr_accounts: got error -14090 trying to log to local LDAP node

servermgrd[2161]: DirectoryService crash detected, reauthorizing node
Nov 14 06:07:39 macserver slapd[2709]: Bad IPLOCALPORT value
I'm running a local standalone setup.
I went into Applications > Utilites > Directory Utility and saw that the light was green on the "Local Server" listed in directory services.
If I try to click "Advanced Settings" button and then click "Services" tap and uncheck "LDAPv3" in the list, after that it won't let me login to the "Server Preferences" until I renable it.
Anyone have any ideas?

  • Error -14120 when creating new group

I have a 10.5 server running in my office. It has been running without a problem for many months now. Recently the machine was rebooted ( due to power outage ) and I had to reset the localadmin passsword as I could not remember it. Now whenever I try to create a new group I get an error -14120. Same error if I try to create a new user. What gives? Any help appreciated.

Group folder creation is not automatic. You have to open a terminal session on the server, and run the command:
    sudo CreateGroupFolder
If that doesn't create the folder, check to make sure it's properly set in Workgroup Manager (including having an owner defined), fix any problems, and try it again.

  • Mobile Account Error Setting Up Leopard Client, createmobileaccount error.

Hi all. I posted this discussion under Portable Home Directories, but that is unfortunately a subcategory of Max OS X Server v10.4 Tiger and this is strictly a Leopard issues, so I'm reposting here.
Just following up on an earlier thread regarding mobile home accounts. Thought I'd post a new entry as the other one has been "answered".
I've just recently upgraded a slew of clients and a server to Leopard and have been trying to enable mobile accounts on existing network home accounts. When I set this as a Preference using Workgroup Manager, nothing happens on the clients. When I try to create a mobile account directly on the client while logged in as the network user, I get a standard error (The mobile account could not be created.) every time after it asks to log out and enter the user password in order to create the mobile account.
So, I followed the steps in this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1234051&tstart=0

    Hi,
The namespace you are using for creating client proxy might not be available for consumption(i.e. it might not be published) or there is no connectivity to the source system so namespace is not available.
    Try checking connection.
    Hoping it helps..

  • Vista problem and error createding users.

Hi All. About 4 weeks back I took on a task to install Leopard server in a small office. 5 macs all running leopard and one dell running Vista home basic.
The server is a brand new Mini with 4 Gigs of Ram and the 320 Gig HD. Storage is on a 2T external box.
Installation was a nightmare. I had to install via Target disk as the Mini was too new to boot from the Leopard DVD (10.5.4) then apply the updates while running the server on the host mac using the mini's HD as the startup drive. It took about 4 goes to get it all up and running.
I set up the users and all's well - except for the dell. It can access the shares and read but cannot write, despite having the same priviledges as the rest of the group. What puzzles me (I know too little about windows and even less about vista) is that while the macs all presented a log-in/password box when they first connected, the dell just went straight to the shares. I cannot find a way of making the dell authenticate. Have I done something wrong or is it Vista home Basic that is the culprit.
Next issue, I cannot get a shared iCal to work (but the wiki calendar works brilliantly) as I keep getting told (this is me the admin) that I don't have permission!
Third issue (and this is worrying me), while testing with the dell I created another user with a new name just to see if it was the original settings that were at fault - but - I couldn't. Everytime I tried to create a new user I get an error message -
"User creation failed. The server reported the error '-14120' while trying to create the user"
It doesn't matter what I do I cannot create another user.
I'd really appreciate some help here.
Finally, (it's not a problem - yet) I have to set it up so that all the users can log in from home to access the shares - and that includes the dell.

    Hi David, I'm back again.
The problem I'm having with the new user error may be hidden in this short section from the log:
Also, one of the users (who has been perfectly OK) is now getting a Kerberos log-in error and can no longer write to the shares.

  • Server setup help

    Hi everyone,
I have just installed Os X Server 10.5 on a new iMac. I am using it to manage a bunch of tother macs on my network. in the initial setup I choose "Standard Setup" and continued the rest of the config. Now every time I try to add a new user or group I get the following message:
"The server reported the error '-14120' while trying to create the group."
Has has anyone else seen this problem?
    What is error '-14120'
    Thanks
    Tim

"Has has anyone else seen this problem?
    What is error '-14120'"
Yes. See the [Error '-14120'|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1205369] thread, as a starting point.
Looks to be an existing and nasty and as-yet unresolved bug in Leopard.

  • Authentication problem in Directory Utility (Standard Mode)

I misposted this in the 10.4-and-earlier section...I have Leopard.
Okay, I suppose I am in over my head as I am not a NA but just had so many macs I thought it would be fun to see if I can make OS X Server work.
I have at the moment 3 users set up: 1 admin and 2 Standard users. When one of the remote Macs tries to use Directory Utility to authenticate, it insists that "The name and password you entered for the user account on the server do not match." Well, I have reset the passwords on the server several times and I am darn sure I have them right. I can connect to the server and use folders and whatnot; i just can't use any of the services.
I suspect this is a permissions issue, because I also get errors if I try to "Allow (one of the standard users) to administer this server" in the Server Preferences/Users pane. I get "Error '-14120' occurred while processing a command of type 'setMembership' in plug-in 'servermgr_accounts'. That's very descriptive and helpful except that I do NOT know what I am doing.
Uh, little help? Did I just do something very stupid that is making everyone chuckle?

I've been at this for eight days myself. Lots of problems. So don't feel bad if things don't sort of "click" into place - they haven't been for me.
First off - I noticed that you have server_name.local. I'll say something right here about that. I had no end of grief when I configured my server with a .local extension. All my machines are named after Kellogg's cereals - so I decided to name this one honeycomb. So during installation I named it honeycomb.local.
Now before I explain this - understand this is my understanding .. I could be dead wrong - but this is how I understand it. Apple uses Bonjour technology to locate network resources. In a network environment there will no doubt already be conventional methods for locating computers - such as DNS, Directory Services, etc. Bonjour is designed to happily coexist with all of those. It essentially uses multicast technology to find other devices on the network and configure it. When a device is using Bonjour - it utilizes the .local suffix. You can see where I am going with this.
So I had some issues and decided to pull the plug. Reinstalled the OS and used honeycomb.private. I STILL see honeycomb.local being referenced throughout - so I feel good now that I made the right choice. Things have been going a lot better since.
I am going to use mymachine.private as the computer, and jdoe as the username in the next bit. Replace them with your own info.
+From my own experiences, here are some things to check+
*_1) Server must respond to the Client's Requests _*
    On the Server:
-Use 'ipfw flush' and clear out firewall rules while you are testing.
    -Does 'ping mymachine' work?
    -Does 'ping mymachine.private' work?
_*2) Client must be able to find the data in Open Directory:*_
-Is Open Directory running in Server Admin.
-In Server Admin, under Open Directory, under Overview - do you have everything running? Is there an LDAP search base and a Kerberos Realm? Are they correct?
-Connect with an LDAP client if you must, and manually verify that the user information is in there. I love Apache Directory Studio (http://directory.apache.org/studio/)
-Perhaps there are certificate or identity issues - turn off the SSL options during testing.
-In Workgroup Manager->User jdoe->Home ensure the information is correct.
*_3) Client must be able to mount the home directory:_*
-Can you manually mount /Users/ on the client, and read / write everything in the jdoe folder ?
In Server Admin, under File Sharing
-/Users/ share point - Automount should be enabled (AFP, Home Folders)
-/Users/ permissions - others should be at least read-only
This is my preference .. but...
    -/Users/jdoe permissions should be:
    ACL: jdoe - Allow, +Full Control+
    POSIX:
    jdoe - Allow, +Read & Write+
    admin - Allow, +Read & Write+
    Others - Allow, None
Select jdoe folder, click on the Cog and Propagate Permissions. Check all permission boxes and click OK.
    _On the Client_
I usually start off, by verifying:
-Does the client have a DHCP address from my server?
-Can my client ping the shortname and fullname of my server?
-Can I manually connect to the server and mount a share?
-Did I do an *ipfw /flush* on the client too?
If all that is correct, then I will go into Directory Utility and click the + to add a directory server. I will select type "Open Directory", type in the server name (mymachine.private), and leave SSL unchecked. Click OK. When done it should say:
mymachine.private(Open Directory Server) - This server is responding normally
Once you get this far, try logging out and logging in as a user - ie. jdoe
If it won't let you log in then answer this - did it do its shAkE at you or did it give you an error message?
Kerberos shouldn't be rearing its ugly head at this stage of the game - its more for single sign on .. but if you see any authentication windows with the words "REALM" or "PRINCIPLE" - those words should set off little Kerberos alarm bells in your head. Like I said - at this stage in the game I don't think those have anything to do with it.
    _*Few other notes:*_
#1) In Workgroup Manager - you could add the client computer. Enter its full name and short name (you can get them from the sharing option in the client's system preferences). Once the computer is added, you can go into the preferences for the computer, click on Login Preferences and set it to always manage. Put a message in the message box such as "Directory has been consulted" and check the "Show Network Users" box. This way - when you log out .. you will have an indication as to whether the open directory is working at all on the client, or if the problem is more focused with the user account.
    #2) I have been getting
    +Error of type Not a known DirStatus (-1) on line 2075 of SourceCache/ WorkgroupManager/WorkgroupManager-319/Plugins/UserAccounts/UserAdvancedPluginVi ew.mm+
when creating a user in Workgroup Manager. I just close out of the user and then it allows me back in.
Drop a post if you manage to solve the problem.

  • Dscl mcximport of policies from a plist

I have been trying to import policies from a plist file using the 'DSCL -mcximport' command without any success for quite a while now.
I can export a group of workgroup pref settings to a plist file using 'dscl . -mcxexport /ComputerGroup/mcxDock > /path/to/file' but can not turn around and import those same exported settings back into the same group.
The command I'm trying is... 'dscl . -mcximport /ComputerGroups/mcxDock /mcxDock.plist'. Every time I run this I get the error "Error: -14987" or if I run the command 'dscl /LDAPv3/127.0.0.1 mcximport /ComputerGroups/mcxDock_Staff /mcxDock_Staff.plist' I get the error "dscl[1947:903] DirServices [dsAddAttribute] error: 4294953176
    DS permission error (-14120)"
I am totally confused as every example I've looked at seems so simple and logical to do.
I want to be able to build a list of workgroup policies on a test Mac server then export them and use them as a faster way to build a base list of policies when I install a new server.
    Any advice would be great.

I am using the broadcom utility and intel utility but it still didn't work reliably. The machine policies weren't running half the time because the card didn't initialize yet. There is a reg edit that we are testing now that tells windows to not process policies until the card comes up. As a side note, the Broadcom is a little cumbersome to setup. I was wondering if anyone knows of a way to make and executable like the intel client will do. Thanks

  • User can't log in / Server can't create new users

I recently updated to OS X Server 10.5.5. Now one of my users can't log in. Wrong username or password the system says. I've reset the password but it doesn't help.
When creating a new user I get this error:
"The server reported the error '-14120' while trying to create the user."
    How can I fix this?

Well, to move the stuff, make a New Account, log into a different admin account & get BatchMod, it's much better/easier than the Finder for recursive Permission changes...
    http://www.lagentesoft.com/batchmod/index.html
Now careful with BatchMod, it's crazy powerful, but easier than Command Line.
Oh, this bad user isn't using FileVault I hope???
OK, once BatchMod is loaded, you can drag the whole bad user's folder to it's icon and set the Ownership/permissions to the new replacement user, check Apply to Enclosed items, go.
Oh, if you have room you might make a copy of that User's folder first & use the copy.
Then open the bad User's folder, Select All, drag to new replacement User's folder.

  • Extended Schema

    Hello,
I am trying to extend my Active Directory schema in order to store my managed preferences in AD.
I am following this white paper : http://images.apple.com/business/solutions/it/docs/Modifyingthe_Active_DirectorySchema.pdf
I am unable to manage groups or computer lists. I cannot create a new computer list as I receive an error when attempting to do so. I have attempted to completely remove all of the extended schema changes, re-compare an OD master against the AD PDC, recreate the schema changes LDF, and re-apply the changes to no avail.
I do see the following in the debug logs:
    2010-10-15 14:09:41 EDT - T[0xB0081000] - Active Directory: Using existing connection for testdomain.com - test.testdomain.com. user [email protected] cache MEMORY:YVKESUz

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

To clarify: the objectClassCategory for apple-computer, apple-group, and apple-user should be 3; all the other classes should be imported with objectClassCategory set to 1. Nothing should have an objectClassCategory of 0.
I finally got a chance to test what happens if the apple-computer-list class is added to AD with objectClassCategory: 0, and the results match what you described. When I tried creating a computer list in Workgroup Manager, WGM popped up a dialog with the error "Not authorized. This action failed because you are not authorized to perform the operation.", and the DS debug log had this:
    2011-01-22 18:19:57 PST - T\[0xB030B000\] - Client: Workgroup Manage, PID: 63007, API: dsCreateRecord(), Active Directory Used : DAC : Node Ref = 33576284 : Rec Type = dsRecTypeStandard:ComputerLists : Rec Name = Untitled_1
    2011-01-22 18:19:57 PST - T\[0xB030B000\] - Active Directory: Using existing connection for example.com - windows-server.example.com. user [email protected] cache MEMORY:wHgljeI
    2011-01-22 18:19:57 PST - T\[0xB030B000\] - Active Directory: Add record CN=Untitled_1,CN=Mac OS X,DC=example,DC=com with FAILED - LDAP Error 19
    2011-01-22 18:19:57 PST - T\[0xB030B000\] - Client: Workgroup Manage, PID: 63007, API: dsCreateRecord(), Active Directory Used : DAR : Node Ref = 33576284 : Record Ref = 0 : Result code = -14120

    2011-01-22 18:19:57 PST - T\[0xB030B000\] - Port: 27927 Call: dsCreateRecord() == -14120
so having the zero objectClassCategory would account for the problem. Unfortunately, I don't know of any way to change the objectClassCategory once it's set. I hope this happened in a test environment, so you can fix it (set objectClassCategory to 1 for all but the apple-user, apple-group, and apple-computer) before rolling it out to live.
If this did make it to the live domain, there's a workaround: use AD tools (e.g. ADSI Edit) to create apple-computer objects inside the CN=Mac OS X container, then use WorkGroup manager to set them up.
BTW, there's a newer version of the Apple instructions at [http://images.apple.com/business/solutions/it/docs/L407117B-USMod_AD_Schema_Support_MacsWP-4.pdf], for Snow Leopard (the one you linked was based on Leopard). The changes aren't terribly important. They removed a bunch of stuff that Snow doesn't use, and added the apple-hwuuid attribute to apple-computer. But the stuff that was removed was hardly ever used under Leopard, and apple-hwuuid isn't actually needed for Snow Leopard, so in fact either set of instructions should work fine with either version of Mac OS X.

  • Computer Name changed...why? How?

Had a weird one, thought I'd post it here. I just noticed that my Mac mini's computer name is "administrators-mac-mini". It's weird because I'd previously set it to something completely different.
Anybody know why a Mac would suddenly start calling itself something else?

Wonder what that's all about. As far as I know, I wasn't setting up or otherwise doing anything with Appletalk or bonjour at that time. Other log files show no activity or connections from nefarious IP addresses. Probably something totally innocuous...but still...weird.

  • How does migrating/restoring Mac OS X Server compare to Mac OS X?

I’m thinking of reinstalling the system software on our server (we have a bunch of problems we can’t get rid of) and I was wondering what the process is like.
We have a Time Machine backup and I was wondering how similar the process is to reinstalling/migrating a client installation of Mac OS X?
For instance does it give you the option to only restore files and data (such as Wiki content), or are you forced to restore all settings, users and preferences as well?
I’d prefer to just restore files and data and then manually recreate users and settings, in the hope of ridding ourselves of some of the problems we have (such as iCal server constantly asking for passwords and an inability to add or remove users using Server Preferences).

It's more a case of looking at the logs and not really knowing what I'm doing. Suffice to say I've taken the trouble-shooting road to my limit.
Mainly we have issues with iCal Server which keeps asking users for their passwords:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5936657
And now we have this error 14120, since 10.5.6, that causes us not to be able to add or remove users in Server Preferences:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8773646
I assume by the advice I'm getting from both of you that the migration tool for Mac OS X Server doesn't include the ability to bring only data files over minus all the settings and users?
I'm happy to do a clean wipe. I just want to be sure I can pull across calendars and Wiki data reasonably easily if I do it manually, as I'm not an IT pro. I'm only a CAD Manager and all my knowledge with these things is only through day-to-day experience.

  • Cannot Bind Leopard Server to Windows Active Directory

Trying to Bind new Leopard Server but keep getting an Unknown error. it there an issue with the new Server OS?
    This is the error
    12/10/07 6:36:37 PM com.apple.launchd[1] (0x0-0x2c02c.com.apple.ServerAdmin4479) Exited abnormally: Segmentation fault

    12/10/07 6:37:30 PM com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.DirectoryServices4626) Exited abnormally: Bus error

Okay, I have now managed to setup up the server. I did this by creating a Open Directory Master and then binding that to our Active Directory. I have setup Active Directory and LDAP binding on the client Macs.
I then added a user from AD into Workgroup Manager and applied a few preferences. They worked brilliantly. However, the computer Workgroup Manager preferences are not working at all! Is there a different way to add computers to Workgroup Manager (I added them by using the + sign and dragging them in from AD) and is there a way to automatically add a computer once it's joined to the domain, like it goes in to AD?
