Error 18 Fixed. Now not backing up fully

"Unable to find back up volume", error 18. Back up disk displayed and working normally otherwise. Changed the firewire cable - FIXED!
Now TM only backs up to the applications folder, (about 50K). TM taking up a lot of my time.

You might try resetting the PRAM and starting up from the Leopard install DVD which forces Time Machine to reindex. However, I wonder if Time Machine's backups got corrupted in which case that won't work.

If resetting the PRAM and reindexing doesn't work I suspect that you will have to start your Time Machine backups over from scratch. If that is the case you should copy any files that are on your Time Machine drive that you have erased from your internal drive.
Reformat the Time Machine drive in Disk Utility. Click on the Security Options button and choose to zero out the data. That should map out any bad sectors on the disk but it takes a long, long time. Then click on Erase.
Hopefully, someone else might be able to come up with another solution that won't involve you having to start your backups over from scratch.
