the port might be already in use,but i'am sure that i have used the port no that is not used. One more thing i have specified the IP address of the Application server in the Host
parameter in The TNSNAMES .ORA.

Report server failed service specific error 186
Gurus!
I am using oracle 9iAS enterprise,
Report server failed service specific error 186
Kindly help!I believe you'll need to edit your tnsnames.ora file located in \ORACLE\806\NET80\ADMIN. The last line of this file should read something like
Rep60_SYSNAME, Rep60_SYSNAME.world = (ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=tcp) (HOST=SYSNAME) (PORT=1949))
where SYSNAME is the name of the PC Reports is installed on.
I had this same error, and once I modified this file, everything seemd to work fine.

Problem in configuring Reports Server. Error-186
Dear All,
I have Developer6.0 on Windows NT with service pack 3 applied.
Problem is that the Report Server is not getting configured as an NT service .
after typing
rwsmts60 -install repserver
a Service is created in the Win NT Services
when I try to start
( I have a default printer )
the following error comes :
"The Oracle Reports Server (repserver )
service returned service specific error
186"
Secondly I tried not to use NT service
by
rwsmts60 -listen repserver
It gives the error
"REP-0186: Daemon failed to listen to port"
My Tnsnames.ora entry is
repserver.world = ( ADDRESS = ( PROTOCOL = TCP ) ( Host = 10.5.0.77 )
( Port = 1949 ) )
I tried different port no.s but still the error persists.
The report server and the OAS is on the same Machine and database is on a separate machine
I am following the White Paper at http://technet.oracle.com/products/reports/pdf/A55143.pdf
Thanks,
Rajat

NT service-error 186 Oracle Reports server 6i
I had problems getting the Reports NT service
to run under certain contitions. I got the
old error 186.
The first time it occured it was right after I installet HAHTsite 4.0 Application server
on the box, so I thought it was a conflict.
I ripped Oracle right off the box and reinstalled. No problemo!
Later when installing on the production server I installed in what I though was the OK order, but nope. I got the old 186:er.
I ripped Ora off and reinstalled, again,
No Problemo! Hey what is this?! I checked in the tnsnames.ora and found a line at the end that said:
Rep60_BARBRO,Rep60_BARBRO.world=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=tcp)(HOST=BARBRO)(PORT=1949))
Nice I thought and booted to DOS to Ghost
the lot. Oh by the way, the installer said nothing about needing a reboot.
After backing up the disks I booted NT and to my surprice the Reports service was broken again! I check the tnsnames.ora and found it lacked the last row (see above)! As I had no copy of the old file I reinstalled Reports over the curent installation and tnsnames was restored!
Nice one, right? Please explain is you can.
Peas to the world!
/HansHey Hans,
I don't know if this is the same problem which you mentioned. I am also getting error number 186. I have an Oracle 8i installed on a Windows NT workstation. Could you please advise me as to what I should do to make the reports server up and running.
Thanks

Report Service: Microsoft service error 186
I have just installed 9ias. The reports service was working fine and then I started getting this error and I can't start the Reports Server. Anyone know what this error means?
it means that the report server entry in your tnsnames.ora file is either missing or incorrect. Check that this entry is in the tnsnames.ora file that is being used.

Reports Service Fails with 186 error after Disocverer4i Admin Install
DB = 8.1.7
9iAS 1.0.2.1
Everything was working fine until the install of Disco4i Admin. I've performed a TNSPING80.EXE myserver & verified the TNSNames.ora configuration. Everything looks ok.Verify the entry in the tnsnames.ora for the Reports Server. The string
should look something like this:
Rep60,Rep60.world=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=tcp)(HOST=<serverdnsname>)(PORT=1949))
Here is a cut from Doc ID 122038.1 on Metalink:
PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:
====================
After installing IAS Enterprise Edition, you attempt to start the Reports
Server Service (see below) and get the error:
REP-0186 - Daemon failed to listen to port.
For Windows NT:
Start-->Settings-->Control Panel-->Services-->Start Oracle Reports Server.
Get REP-186 error.
For UNIX:
Run the following Script:
$ORACLE_HOME/developer6i/reports60_server start.
SOLUTION DESCRIPTION:
=====================
WINDOWS NT 4.0 Server:
The primary cause for this error is that the Reports Server Service cannot
find a valid entry in the tnsnames.ora file. When the MTS starts, it tries
to read the entry in the $ORACLE_HOME\net80\admin\tnsnames.ora file. There
may be multiple files called tnsnames.ora on the machine. The following hint
may help in setting the default location for this file on the Windows NT
platform:
1. Click Start-->Run and type in REGEDIT; press enter; click OK.
2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/ORACLE folder.
3. With this folder open, right-click in the right-hand pane and select New-->
String.
4. Enter "TNS_ADMIN" (w/o the quotes) for the new string.
5. Double-click on the new string, and enter the <drive>:\<path> to where your
centralized tnsnames.ora file is stored for string's value. This setting to
the registry will define a common TNS_ADMIN directory, allowing for a
central file to be managed.
6. Verify the entry in the tnsnames.ora for the Reports Server. The string
should look something like this:
Rep60,Rep60.world=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=tcp)(HOST=<serverdnsname>)(PORT=1949))
Where <serverdnsname> is the name of the DNS name of the server
(the server's IP address may also be used instead. "World"
is the name of the default domain in the sqlnet.ora file.
7. Navigate to Start-->Settings-->Control Panel-->Services, find the Oracle
Reports Server [<RepServerName>] and start the service.
a) If the Service still fails to start, ensure that there is a printer
(local or network) installed, and in the Control Panel-->Services, click
the Oracle Reports Server [<RepServerName>], and click the Startup
button.
b) Under the "Log on As" section, select "This Account", then click the
ellipsis (...) button. In the dialogue box that comes up, select a user
that has access to the system's printer, and type in the user's password,
(do this even if the asterisks (*) appear), and click OK. Legacy
versions required a printer driver be installed on the Server in order
to format document output, even when creating cached documents for the
web.
c) Restart the Reports Server Service.
UNIX:
The following examples assume that IAS is installed in:
/u01/app/oracle/product/ias
and the $ORACLE_HOME is defined as the same.
1. Edit the $ORACLE_HOME/developer6i/reports60_server script file, noting the
following (example) settings:
csh:
setenv TNS_ADMIN $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin
bsh/ksh:
export TNS_ADMIN=$ORACLE_HOME/network/admin
2. Define a printer per NOTE:74872.1 and set the PRINTER environment to match:
csh:
setenv PRINTER <queuename>
bsh/ksh:
export PRINTER=<queuename>
3. Verify the entry in the tnsnames.ora for the Reports Server. The string
should look something like this:
Rep60,Rep60.world=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=tcp)(HOST=<serverdnsname>)(PORT=1949))
Where <serverdnsname> is the name of the DNS name of the server
(the server's IP address may also be used instead). "World" is
the name of default domain in the sqlnet.ora file.
4. Now start the $ORACLE_HOME/developer6i/reports60_server script file.
EXPLANATION:
============
The IAS installation creates a TN S_ADMIN in the $ORACLE_HOME/developer6i
directory, but the Reports Server is not able to find it, due to the defaults
setup by the installer.

Reports Service failes with 186 error after Disco4i Admin install.
OS NT 2000
DB 8.1.7
9iAS 1.0.2.1
Disco Admin 4.1.33e
Everthing was working fine until the install of Disco4i Admin. It would error on the install until I stopped the Reports Service. Post install - The reports service failed to start. NT specific error 186.
I've performed a TNSPING80.EXE myserver & verified the TNSNames.ora configuration in 806, iSuites, and 8.1.7. Everything looks ok.If you have set the TNS_ADMIN environment variable or registry key to an alternate value, Oracle9iAS Reports Services may fail to start with an error 186 or REP-0186. In such a case, you can start Oracle9iAS Reports Services from an MS-DOS command prompt as follows:
prompt> setenv TNS_ADMIN <IAS_HOME>/6iserver/network/admin
prompt> <IAS_HOME>/6iserver/reports60_server start
replacing <IAS_HOME> with the directory where you installed Oracle9i Application Server. This will force Oracle9iAS Reports Services to use the tnsnames.ora file at <IAS_HOME>/6iserver/network/admin.
Hope this will help

Report Server service Error.
Hi,
I am trying to configure Reports server non Cartridge but I am gettion
following error message in reports server log file.
*** 2000-01-25 22:16:02 -- Daemon failed to listen to port.
i gave port number as 1951.
If I try to start service in the windows nt
following error message is coming.
"The Oracle Reports Server[Repserver] service returned service specific error 186."
My system configuration is
Oracle8i database, OAS 4.0.7 and Reports6I and developer server. I am running all of them in one machine using sp3.
As per discussion i have changed Tnsnames.ora to test.world but still unsuccessful. Even in listener.ora i have included port 1951 but no luck
Appr. any response.
Rajesh.
null1. listener.ora is for the Net8 listener - nothing to do with the Reports Server, so I suggest you change it back to whatever port it was listening on (usually 1521 or 1526) and then stop and re-start the Net8 listener (otherwise it will prevent the reports server from listening on that port).
2. You need to look in sqlnet.ora and add whatever value for names.default_domain is to the alias in tnsnames.ora. So if it says 'world' in sqlnet.ora, you need 'alias.world = (ADDRESS....' in tnsnames.ora
3. Try another port in tnsnames.ora
4. re-install reports 6i beta - the installer will set up, configure, and start the reports server for you.

I think something is either active or hung listening on the same socket Oracle Reports is trying to run on. Remove the conflict by using another port. If Oracle Reports/Forms has crashed and hung the socket the only easy way to fix the problem is to three finger salute the machine. -
Hi guys,
I've tried so many things and still nothing. Whenever I boot my comp the report service is not running. Then I try to run it manually through the services pannel I get the message asking to contact the vendor. Here's the message from log viewer:
Event Type: Error

The Oracle Reports Server [REP60-A] service terminated with service-specific error 186.
My OS is Win Server2000 and web app is Apache on Oracle 8 app server. Could you please help me with ideas what possibly can be wrong?
Thank you for any help.
nullHello,
can anybody tell me please what port number Oracle Report services are running on or listening to?
Thank you. -
Hi all champions.
I have installed 9iAs R1 on windows 2k.My form server is running well, but there is a problem with Report server and its service is not ruuning (error 186).
What could be the tns entry for folders 806 and iSuites?
Early reply will be appreciated.
Thanks.Do you have the repository connection configured? This is in the 806_home\report60\server\server_name.ora file with repositoryconn= setting.
If you do, make sure you can connect to that database with the user name/password you have configured. Connect from 806_home\bin\sqlplus to check this.
Are you on the latest patch?
Did you configure the service to not interact with the desktop? If not, you should change it to not interact. -
Dear reader,
I am facing this grave problem while using the 9iAS. My Forms server is running perfect when started but the Report server is showing an error while starting and is showing the error "Service returned service specific error 186".
I am unable to resolve this, please help.
thanks and regards.
BhaktiDoes this error occur just after the installation and without manually changing any files?
After 9iAS installation, did you modify your 806_Oracle_Home\Net80\admin\tnsnames.ora file with your database information? If so, please check whether there are any additional characters, especially in the line you specified the alias name for your DB. Check if there is any special characters including a blank space. Or remove the changes you made and try to start Reports.
Hope this would help,
Thanks! -
Report Server Installation Problem
hi
we have installed java web server and dev6 server and deployed our application (which
was coded on Forms 5 later converted to 6) it is working fine in the web browser
but we have problem in running developer report server as nt service. we have followed the same steps as stated on oracle documentation.
we have added all the necessary entries in the registry and created an entry at tnsnames.ora, then installed the oracle report server at the command prompt - the service was added. upto this point it was quite okay. when we startup the report service we are getting "Oracle Report Server Service retuned server specfic error 186"
our oracle server runs on diffrent system
whose ip address is 129.1.2.203 and instance name is O8E. the web server and developer server runs on workstation and it got the following entry on the tnsnames.ora:
rserver.world =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS =
(PROTOCOL = TCP)
(Host = 129.1.2.201)
(Port = 1521)
(CONNECT_DATA = (SID = O8E)
we have checke-up all the trouble-shooting tips given in the documentation, but all in vain.
can anybody suggest some tips on this
thanks in advance
regds.,
nullThe tns entry you show for rserver is a DATABASE entry (it has a SID) which would explain why this doesn't work - the reports server entry is shorter.
Please refer to the Reports Server Configuration whitepaper, available on OTN (under the 6.0 collateral) which provides in-depth instructions for setting this up. In Reports 6i the installer does all this for you.

Report server service not starting up in report 6i
I am trying to start report server service in windows 2000 server but it is not starting
up with following error in event viewer.
The Oracle Reports Server [arun] service terminated with service-specific error 186.
Any clue. This error generally means there is a problem in the tnsnames.ora file. You are probably missing the needed entry for the Reports Server or the Reports Server name you are using contains special characters.
