Error -2000 necessary data reference could not be resolved-- HELP!!!

So, I work in a nurse's office at a medical school editing video on an iMac 2.33 GHx Intel Core 2 Duo with 3GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM. Mine is the only mac in the office, the rest of the secretaries, nurses, and grad students are on windows XP.
My job is basically to edit videos (color correct, blur faces of patients' relatives, etc) from a study they did, and export the videos to a DVD (as a data disk, not a DVD with menus) so they can show them to each other and various committees on their windows machines.
For the longest time, this went off without a hitch, but most recently, I tried burning some .mov files to disk, and whenever they play on any machine (windows xp) we get "Error -2000 necessary data reference could not be resolved." I re-burned the disks, and now, they are selective! They play on some of the office computers, but not all... including the target machine where they will ultimately be screened for a committee... even on the 2nd batch of disks, that error is still present...
I know about video editing, and to some degree disk burning (I used the "New-->burn folder" option to create the data disk, burning them at 2x speed for reliability). But I don't know enough about computers to figure out what this error means, or why these disks won't work!! Somebody please help!
(and you can save the sales pitch... I'm a mac user through and through, and there is no way in heck my office will ever have enough money or motivation to switch over)
Thanks for your help!!

I wont address the problem but that you should have your videos. Dont you still have them on your camera? If not, just get it from your friend. Btw, do this the next tíme around ... Whenever you plug in the camera and your  iPhoto/pic Application opens up, BEFORE you have iPhoto import them, use Finder to copy the photos over to your HDD or an external drive. This is so that YOU always have the originals BEFORE your pic Application does.

It means iPhoto can't find the file.
There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 9 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

  • Used "Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto" now my video files in iPhoto have an error message "A necessary data reference could not be resolved."

As the title states, I used the app "Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto" to get rid of 6 GB of duplicate pictures.  However, now when I go to view a video in iPhoto, I get the error message "A necessary data reference could not be resolved."  I am able to view the video clips (with sound, etc.) in Finder.  However, I want to know if there is a way to restore them in iPhoto?????
    Thanks,
    Leslie
I see that the suggested solution is to restore from back-up... is there anyway to do that without bringing in ALL of the duplicate photos I just deleted?

Try going back to QuickTime 7.4, we've seen the same problem occur with the 7.5 update. How did you make the .mov file that plays all of the files? For us, the problem shows up with reference movies (such as that .mov) made on a Mac, but works fine if it is created on Windows.

When I want to scroll through My pictures  why do I get this Error message (A necessary data reference could not be resolved)

Before anyone can help, they need information to work with. Basic stuff:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. What were you doing when the problem arose?
    - Did it ever work properly?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
Anything else you can think of that might allow someone else to understand your issue.
With this kind of information somebody can develop a starting point for troubleshooting the issue.
Posts that consist of "iPhoto doesn't work. Help" or "iPhoto won't print" or "Suddenly I have no photos!!!!!!!!!!" mean that any helper is simply guessing. With information, s/he may be able to get your issue resolved sooner.

  • Iphoto .MOV issue - "a necessary data reference could not be resolved" when opening certain videos

I have recently perchaced a brand new Mac Book Pro. The apple store very kindly tranfered everything from my old Mac Book to my new Mac Book Pro. I keep my iphoto library on and external hardrive, which seems to be working fine since I moved everything. BUT..."some' movies won't play from my iphoto library and a window appears saying "a necessary data reference could not be resolved". I can find these videos when I search for them in finder manually (I backed everything up before I transfered everything into a file called TEMP VIDEOS), but why can't my iphoto application find them, like it used to...it still still should right!? Very frustrating.
    Please help..
    Thanks

Actually this happened to me today and although it would not let me play the file it allowed me to use that same file i had exported from iphotos but could not play and then it allowed me to open it in imovie (you can go to import and then get it from the desktop or wherever) although I made a couple of changes to it the main thing is once you drag it into the space to begin a new project you can then right click and select open in finder and that file actually plays......if its cause i made some changes to it i.e trimmed it slightly then its worth doing so.

  • I cannot access my videos anymore in Iphoto. ' A necessary data reference could not be resolved '

Hi, I can no longer access the videos in my iphoto library. It still shows the screenshot and the duration of the video, but when i open, i get the following message ' A necessary data reference could not be resolved'. What can i do ?
Tried also to export, but to no avail.
    Thx for suggestions,
    Oscar

With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a solution.  We can't see your computer so we need to know the details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
what version of iPhoto are you using?
what system version are you running?
Did you apply any updates or upgrades to iPhoto or the system between the time you last were able to view the video files and now?
    what fixes have you tried?
    where is your library located?
did you apply any updates or upgrades just prior to the problem occurring?
are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library?
    what type of Mac?
how much free space on your boot drive?

  • Error -2000 a necessary data reference could not be found

I'm trying to play a DVD movie in QuickTime. When I drag from the file and drop on top of the QuickTime icon I get this message.
Error -2000 a necessary data reference could not be found
I have followed the directions I found on the web site.
In Windows Explorer, double-click the file or drag it to the QuickTime Player application icon.
Choose File > Open and select the file.
What is the problem? Is there no list of QuickTime error messages and what they mean? I've been looking everywhere for something that applies to me.

Try going back to QuickTime 7.4, we've seen the same problem occur with the 7.5 update. How did you make the .mov file that plays all of the files? For us, the problem shows up with reference movies (such as that .mov) made on a Mac, but works fine if it is created on Windows.

    * also i saw this comment on another forum but no comments after it.
(I had the same problem and managed to fix it as follows: I found that I had two Library folders, one in Macintosh HD, one in my User folder. Each Library folder contained a folder for Internet Plug-Ins. I moved the files QuickTime Plugin.plugin and QuickTime Plugin.webplugin from the Macointosh HD/Library/Internet Plug-Ins to User folder/Library/Internet Plug-Ins, and that fixed it.
Not sure why there are two Library folders, but QuickTime installation seems to have put the plug-ins into the wrong one, and that was the problem)
has anyone else encountered this problem or have any ideas on the cause or the fix?
i have done all that can with my limited capabilities and any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    thank you

  • Backups failing with error 19: the backup disk could not be resolved, or there was a problem mounting it

    Hello all,
Doubt this issue relates to a recent and ugly issue but sharing anyways (resolved thanks to a user here: LaPastenague)
Time Capsule won't backup if Modem (Motorola SB6121) attached
This was on Feb 10th resolved. Few days later I upgraded to Yosemite.  Backups were working fine since.
Yesterday I happen to notice my last backup was 5 days ago.  I looked in the console logs and saw:
2/25/15 3:55:06.127 PM com.apple.backupd[2777]: Attempting to mount network destination URL: afp://Paul;AUTH=SRP@Time%20Capsule._afpovertcp._tcp.local./Data

I called Apple.  Their front line was clueless. He suggested resetting the TC (latest "tower" model btw") which then a backup kicked off YEAH
But the next hour it failed
Called Apple again, this time to Sr Advisor.  He suggested factory reset of the TC and set up again.  Also first backup worked then rest failed
Third call to Apple useless also.  He was asking questions I didn't feel relevant.  He also was asking me to reset the TC which I told him was done 2 hours prior. He asked me to reboot which I could NOT at that time.
I begged him to collect data to submit to engineering, which will take days to get a reply.
So I thought I would throw this out to the community....
TC Is NEW (replaced from last issue).  Mac is 8 months old (iMac 27"), Os is Yosemite,  TC also new (latest model)
    Thanks...

Yosemite is problematic on two fronts.. Networking and Time Machine.. so the combo of doing both with a Time Capsule is like bugs on bugs.
Here is my standard list.. but your problem maybe difficult to resolve.. and my suggestion is simple.. until Apple get their act together and fix TM.. buy Carbon Copy Cloner and use that for your backup. It is solid and reliable.. even better if you use USB drive plugged into the computer and do a bootable clone.. because then you have a backup that is able to be tested for full functionality 2min after the end of the backup.
This also starts from a factory reset.. but the reason for it is to change the configuration which is much more easily handled with factory reset to begin.. the instructions are there.. because this is my standard reply.. this is not uncommon!!
    Factory reset universal
Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.
    Setup the TC again.
ie Start from a factory reset. No files are lost on the hard disk doing this.
Then redo the setup from the computer with Yosemite.
    1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.
eg TCgen5 and TCwifi for basestation and wireless respectively.
Even better if the issue is more wireless use TC24ghz and TC5ghz with fixed channels as this also seems to help stop the nonsense. But this can be tried in the second round.
    2. Use all passwords that also comply but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.
    3. Ensure the TC always takes the same IP address.. you will need to do this on the main router using dhcp reservation.. or a bit more complex setup using static IP in the TC. But this is important.. having IP drift all over the place when Yosemite cannot remember its own name for 5 min after a reboot makes for poor networking. If the TC is main router it will not be an issue.
    4. Check your share name on the computer is not changing.. make sure it also complies with the above.. short no spaces and pure alphanumeric.. but this change will mess up your TM backup.. so be prepared to do a new full backup. Sorry.. keep this one for second round if you want to avoid a new backup.
    5. Mount the TC disk in the computer manually.
In Finder, Go, Connect to server from the top menu,
Type in SMB://192.168.0.254 (or whatever the TC ip is which you have now made static. As a router by default it is 10.0.1.1 and I encourage people to stick with that unless you know what you are doing).
You can use name.. SMB://TCgen5.local where you replace TCgen5 with your TC name.. local is the default domain of the TC and doesn't change.
However names are not so easy as IP address.. nor as reliable. At least not in Yosemite they aren't. The domain can also be an issue if you are not plugged or wireless directly to the TC.
    6. Make sure IPv6 is set to link-local only in the computer. For example wireless open the network preferences, wireless and advanced / TCP/IP.. and fix the IPv6. to link-local only.
There is a lot more jiggery pokery you can try but the above is a good start.. if you find it still unreliable.. don't be surprised.
You might need to do some more work on the Mac itself. eg Reset the PRAM.. has helped some people. Clean install of the OS is also helpful if you upgrade installed.
    Tell us how you go.
Someone posted a solution.. See this thread.
Macbook can't find Time Capsule anymore
Start from the bottom and work up.. What I list here is good network practice changes but I have avoided Yosemites bug heaven.
This user has had success and a few others as well.

    Hi,
In addition, please make sure that the port 443 is not blocked by the firewall.
Web Application Proxy requires internal name resolution to resolve the names of backend servers, and AD FS servers. When publishing web applications via Web Application Proxy, every web application you publish requires an external URL. For clients to reach
these web applications, a public DNS server must be able to resolve each external URL that you configure. Note that the external URL must resolve to the same IP address as the Web Application Proxy server, or the external IP address of a firewall or load-balancer
placed in front of the Web Application Proxy server.

  • Iphoto Error Message- Necessary Data Reference is Missing

By restoring them from your back up. That message means that iPhoto can't find them.

  • EJB Reference could not be resolved (javax.naming.NameNotFoundException)

I am new to EJBs and am trying to get a simple Java client to run which I've generated from a EJB3.0 session bean.

I used windows for years whereby I stored all photos in folders. As macs don't use this concept I am finding it hard to organize my photos.
You can do this on your Mac too. Just don't use iPhoto. But iPhoto is a lot more flexible.
    For instance:
I usually sort them by month so when I say move to an album I mean I create an album called for example '2013 March' so I can easily find specific photos/videos.
Click on the Magnifying Glass lower left to reveal the search box. Then click on the magnifying glass in the search box, and select Date. Now you can instantly find all the photos from a particular month, or day.
File -> New Smart Album will allow you to create an automatic album for any date or date range you choose.
Select one of the affected videos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder Window should open with the file selected. Does it play?
