Error 2048 not a movie file

QT 7 pro was working fine at first. Now when I try to play a video file I get "error 2048 not a movie file. The file plays fine in another player. Also QT will play a QT movie but not a file. I have QT installed on two computers with the exact same problem on both. please help.

Yes the format of the files is windows media video files. They play successfully on real player and on VLC media player.
They were also playing on itunes, but now they won't play on QT or itunes. By play a movie I mean the movie was downloaded as a QT movie. The desktop icon says QTmovie. The files That give the 2048 error have real player on the desktop icon.I have uninstalled and reinstalled, even disabling norton before reinstalling still error 2048 on QT. P.S. Itunes and QT were downloaded as a bundle, whatever the problem is is affecting itunes because now when i add files to library they don't show up.

    hello,
I'm a NAPP member and had been following the photoshop TV casts on QT....however, now I get the error message 'error - 2048 not a valid movie file'...its an mpeg4 QT file, but I get the message whenever I attempt to play the downloaded file...or when I try to just watch the stream, it won't open the URL...these are the only movies that I'm having this problem with...as I can watch other movies from other sites w/o incident...NAPP hasn't replied to my inquiries except that they don't support the TV shows.
    Any ideas?...would be appreciated...

Thank you very much for the link to videolan.org. I was having the same problem playing downloaded Photoshop TV videos. I tried MPlayer which worked but was not comprehensible. I had never heard of videolan, but it works like a charm.

  • Quick time 'this is not a movie file' error message

    PLEASE HELP!
i've recently downloaded some movies off the internet (.avi files) and although all have originally opened and played in quicktime, i am now getting 'this is not a movie file' error messages for all of them. I've had this before and restarting the computer has usually helped - but not this time. I've also tried reinstalling quicktime, as well as installing divx (i get an error message saying this file cannot be opened). for some reason i can't install VLC (some message about not being able to mount).
I've also burnt the files to a cd and tried playing from there (Rather than my external hard drive) but still won't work. The files won't even open up a preview... i really don't understand what could have happened though - i've opened and played all of them when i first downloaded them and they worked just fine!
    i'd appreciate any help.
    cheers

The fact that you cannot even mount one file or install another makes it sound more like an OS problem than a QT problem, though I guess in part some people deserve what they get with pirated movies through torrents. Have you repaired permissions?
The files you cannot even use that are not the videos in question indicate your problems lie elsewhere.

  • Mov-av error message. This is not a movie file.

    Hello,
In capturing a live HD file from my AJA IOHD in PRO RES 422 the computer froze at the end of the capture and forced me to use Force Quit to close out of Final Cut 6. The file is 112 gig and all the information is there on my disk. But, when I try to open the quicktime file I get the dreaded "not a movie file" error message because it has the .mov-av extenson.
I imagine the header was corrupted and the directory needs to be rebuilt to get access to the file. Does anyone know how to do this? I would like to be able to open it without going to a very expensive data recovery service.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • Is there a correlation b/w Error -2048 and MPEG-4 files greater than 2GB?

I am having considerable difficulty in getting any of my DVD/movie files greater than 2GB to upload into my iTunes library. Anyone else having this difficulty? Through another problem, I discovered that iTunes ability to play video is based a thinned-down version of the Apple's QT engine, which prompted me to try and open these files using QT Pro; however, there too, I am getting a peculiar -2048 error suggesting it is not a movie file. The files were created using WONDERSHARE and I am experiencing difficulty with only the files that exceed 2GB in size.
For WONDERSHARE users, here are my relevant settings:
    RESOLUTION: 720*400
    CODEC: H.264
    FPS: 30
KBPS: 2,000 or 2,500 (toggled in between both to manage file size for longer movies, like 3 hour Bollywood epics)
Any help on this matter woudl be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Tabish

    Jon,
Thanks for your response. I have inserted commentary below:
    I am having
considerable difficulty in getting any of my
DVD/movie files greater than 2GB to upload into my
    iTunes library.The 2 GB
restriction is usually on your source file -- the DVD
VOB -- or associated with Fat-32 file system. I have
H.264 files as large as 3.8 GB for SD content.
The file system is NTFS. I am not sure what you mean by DVD VOB.
    I discovered that
iTunes ability to play video is based a thinned-down
    version of the Apple's QT
    engineiTunes can access the
entire QT structure. The iPod and TV players are
limited to a modest QT sub-set.
O.K. But, QT still cannot open the file. If the files are corrupt, how come they only become corrupt at 2+ GB.
    however, there too, I
am getting a peculiar -2048 error suggesting it is
not a movie file.If issued by an
Apple application, this error code usually equates to
"noMovieFound" at the referenced location. This could
be a path error or refer to a movie interrupt during
conversion (as when your 2 GB plus source file
terminates prematurely) and the target file is not
closed properly (and is likely not recognized as a
    valid QT file).
    CODEC:
    H.264In which profile?
Again, not sure what you mean by "profile."

  • Premiere Elements - Error 2048 couldn't open file......Question

    Windows 8.1
    6 gigs of ram
I get the following error when I attempt to open a created file for viewing.
    "Error- 2048: Couldn't open file.....not a file Quicktime understands.
I am creating the file in the default NTSC 720 format. I get the same message with trying to wide screen format.
This error seems new as it did not use to happen.
Can someone explain how to correct this error. In researching the problem I came across:
    1. trying third party repair software (which doesn't seem to solve the problem.)
    2. that the error refers to an error with the movie rendering (as opposed to the audio.)
Been working on this for four hours. Any help is certainly appreciated. Thanks.

What version of Premiere Elements on your Windows 8.1 (assumed 64 bit)? For now I will assume 11, 12, or 13.NT
Please confirm that your export setting from Premiere Elements were
    Publish+Share
    Computer
    QuickTime
with Presets = NTSC DV 16:9
and that you did not customize the settings, just hit save to get your widescreen DV.mov export.
That export should be fully playable with the latest version of QuickTime.
If you confirm that QuickTime player is rejecting it with your error 2048, then uninstall and install QuickTime
with the antivirus and firewall(s) disabled.
    a. Try to open the existing DV.mov again in QuickTime
    and
    b. Create a new DV.mov in Premiere Elements and try to open it in QuickTime.
What are the results from a and b?
We will be watching for your progress.
    Thank you.

  • Quick Time Pro - The movie could not be open. This is not a movie file.

I upgraded to 7.4.5 and now I can't view any of my AVI files. I am getting the following error message.
The movie could not be open. This is not a movie file. Please help!

It is most likley a problem in the new Quick Time (QT). My Updater downloaded the new QT 7.4.5 two Saturdays ago. I have been making movies in iMovie then posting them to YouTube. In the beginning I uploaded the movies as MOVs but soon discovered AVI files (larger file and added time to upload) had more clarity when viewed on YouTube. Once the new QT 7.4.5 downloaded all my AVIs had picture, but no sound! I downloaded the Perian component as posted in QT discussions. The sound returned to the AVI files. However, when I Exported an AVI movie from iMovie the picture quality was worse than MOV. There is something wrong with the new QT 7.4.5 when working with AVI, my AVI movies look terrible. These AVI files were all downloaded from my Ultra Flip Video camera with Flip’s codec 3vix. Flip is aware of this problem and acknowledged it last week, I sure hope Apple is also aware.

  • QuickTime - "Not a movie file"

I hope this is the correct forum to post this question. So I had a TV station send me a drive with some footage on it. They're not on a Mac and couldn't export to ProRes, so I chose PhotoJPEG from their list of formate they could export. I've have good quality results with that format in the past and have exchanged that format with another shop that's running Avid and Fusion without any problems. Their file won't open at all, in anything. I'm running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and was wondering if their file is too big for my system... 71 GB.
Instead of five or six clips, they sent me one mega clip. I can't imagine if the codec wasn't compatible, that I would get that error "This is not a movie file." Usuall would tell me I'm missing something or play the audio only. The file has a QT icon (maybe just because it has a .mov extenstion).
    Any advice is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks for the reply.
Ahh, I forgot to check that. It's a Windows NT File System (NTFS) format. What are the issues with grabbing a file from an NT formatted drive?

    * Then I restarted the computer and ran installation from this first CD
    What happened:
    * installation did not finish, because there were some problems during installation process.

It seems like a problem with reading some data from the CD, but during the installation checking of disk was ok.. maybe it can be problem with the cd-rom..? Or problem with data on cd-rom - I mean bad archive file..? But it is original CD.. What do you think??

I know this is a relatively old post, but some people can stumble on this page when doing a search for this problem.
Anyway, I ran into this on my PC after I installed Sybase which had an older jre.
    Solution:
    1. Run regedit
    2. Look for Java Runtime Environment
You may have to do multiple searches. Eventually you'll find one with the version number.
    3. Modify the value and change it to the correct version number. (in your case, you would have changed it from 1.4 to 1.6).
This is much quicker than reinstalling Java every time installing something that uses an older version of Java hoses up the registry value.

  • Can't open MPEG that opened before: "The file is not a movie file."

I have an unusually large (for me) MPEG file that I succeeded in downloading and viewing sometime in the last year and a half, and I kept it on my disk despite its being over 3GB because I thought I might want to look at it again. Now I do, only it won't open: "The movie could not be opened. The file is not a movie file." I tried using Time Machine to bring back earlier versions of QuickTime - 7.5 and 7.5.5 as I recall; I now have 7.6.2 - but these wouldn't open the file either, so I figure it may have something to do with a change in the system. In any event, should it be possible to open this file (again, it did open previously, with no problem), and if so how? Thanks.

I have a similar major problem and wonder if it its to do with file sizes or codecs. I recorded video at work from a laparoscopic medical camera and output the video at the end of the session from the device's hard-drive to my 16GB memory stick. It is a 750Mb with file extension .mp4 and I now get exactly the same message as others if try to open it with Quick time (I can't open it with anything else either and nor could our medical illustration department). I bought the quick time pro upgrade as was told that would probably work and got same problem. Interestingly, I have had a second problem today having worked on a separate movie I put together in i-movie that I had recorded from a hi-def panasonic camcorder, imported and successfully edited (with ease) in i-movie and exported it "uncompressed" as a quicktime movie. It was only 5mins of video and produced a 15GB file. I wanted to save this onto a 16GB memory stick, but found out that the FAT32 folder system doesn't allow that file size! So, I formatted the memory stick to "Mac extended journalled", and was able to save the entire file onto the stick. But, now it won't open in quick time! I get the same message as above! Does anybody have any idea what these two issues might be?

  • "The file is not a movie file."

    Hey Everyone,
I have a series of .avi files that, up until recently, I was able to watch using QuickTime and on my television through my EyeHome box...
Due to a hard drive failure, I had to copy these files to another hard drive. Now when I double-click on one, I get a message from QuickTime stating "The movie could not be opened. The file is not a movie file."
Meanwhile, though, I can still play these same files using VLC Media Player. So what gives? Why would files that were previously playable with QuickTime suddenly stop working?
Yes - I've got all the latest software updates, etc.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

I, too am having similar problems. I had upgraded to QT 7.4 and my FCP 4.5 would no longer launch. I Archived and Reinstalled my osx 10.3.9. Now, all my MPEG-1 files that were previously useable in QT give me the "The movie could not be opened" message. The video is viewable in VLC, however.
I do have QT Pro 7. I cannot use MPEG Streamclip. When I try to open with MPEG Streamclip, I do not get any video.
I have purchased the Apple QT 6 MPEG-2 PLAYBACK, but that didn't help. I don't know if there is a playback component I had before that I don't have since the Reinstall.
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • Error: Could not find the file "flash.ocx"

I have been receiving the error COULD NOT FIND THE FILE

I get this error continuously throughout the day - no matter

This morning it occurred to me that my screen saver is not coming

    PLEASE HELP!

Ah-ah! The workaround is to map my network folder to a drive, say... M:\
So, when I select Edit->Edit in Audition->Sequence, I can select the Browse button to alter the Path destination. Instead of seeing '\\Zeus\Projects\...', I select the mapped M: drive so the path reads 'M:\Projects\...' instead.
Then, Audition loads and is able to find the sequence or clip.
    So... that solves my problem!
