Error (-208)

Can someone please help?
I have had to re-instal my iTunes for whatever reason and now my purchases are not available (locked). When i autorize my 'machine' it says it is successful. seconds later i get an error saying "We could not complete you music store request. An unkown error occured (-208). There was an error in the music store. Please try again later."
I have verified my login details and right clicked to 'Get Info' to ensure the details are correct. the dates were right, it even accepted that i was the purchasee.
I go into the music store and see that some of my purchased songs are noted as "Previously Purchased", however others are not.
I have tried downloading iTunes 7.6.2 and it comes up with that Internet Explorer thing suggesting that i am not connected to the internet.

If you haven't already done so, try just restarting your computer.
If you have any anti-virus software on the computer (Norton, McAfee, TrendMicro, etc.) or Firewalls, try temporarily disabling them and trying iTunes again.
It may also help to tell iTunes to deauthorize first, and then authorize again.

  • Mac Media Transfer Error 208

    Hello,
I just got an N95 which I have updated to the latest firmware. I have a 2GB SanDisk card inside.
I've used the Mac Media Transfer software to browse my device and copy to iPhoto.
Things get strange when using the music sync. It's worked on only a couple of occassions. Most of the time it thinks about it 'preparing to transfer' and then stops with an error 208!!
I was wondering what this meant?
If there is no memory card it will sync fine so I think it may be the card.
I've formated the memory card and Nokia Maps runs fine from it.
I keep all my media on an external hard disk but iTunes has no problem playing from here and the n95 transfers to iPhoto fine through this.
    I've got an iBook G4 Mac OS X 10.4.10 (8R218)
    N95-1 firmware 12.0.013
    Any ideas??

Sounds like a bad file that's being hit by the transcoding process, but not without the memory card because the file wouldn't fit on the device in that case.
I can suggest you to upgrade to NMT 1.3 Beta(if you are using old version) otherwise you have to try finding the bad file.
Start tranfer with 1 file, then add more and more until it breaks again.
Please THANK me by clicking on the ****WHITE STAR** ( Giving KUDOS) the big GREEN BOX to your LEFT .
It will help me to serve you better !!!!!

  • Does anyone know what error 208 is?

I'm trying to download the last 2 tracks from the Killers new album and I keep on getting error .208 coming up. How do I sort this out? It's driving me nuts!! lol!

the most common cause of a -208 is a bug in itunes version 6.0.0.18. if you've got a 6.0.0.18 (to check, go "help > about itunes", and wait for the version number to scroll up from the bottom of the screen), try upgrading to 6.0.5.20, or 7.0.1.8.
if you don't have a 6.0.0.18, then the next most common cause is a damaged itunes configuration file. although the following document is on a different problem, try the rebuild technique from that document to see if it helps:
iTunes for Windows doesn't open after upgrading

  • Error -208 after purchasing CD on iTunes

Hey guys, this is not the first time this has happened.
After purchasing a new album on iTunes with a music card, the cd was imported to my library. When trying to play the album, iTunes asks me to authorize it, by confirming my password and what not then says something like "you have authorized a total of 1 out of 5 authorized machines." Then it come up with the (error -208) block and doesn't allow me to play any of the songs.
Anyone understand why this is happening? Thanks.

You're not still using an older version of iTunes are you?

  • Error -208 : There was an error in the music store

This is truly getting old. I made the jump from 5.0.1 (which had sound problems) to 6 last night. I can play my music I imported from CD just fine (skips every now and then). But, when I try to play any of the music I paid handsomely for through iTunes, I first got other errors. Now, this morning, it's Error -208: There was an error in the music store.
    What is the problem here?
Is the problem with the music store or with iTunes 6?
When can a truly working fix be expected?
Whatever happened to Apple's QA? Every upgrade of iTunes since 4.7 causes more and more problems. I'm embarassed because I recommended a friend buy the new iPod two weeks ago. He's probably cussing me out left and right at the moment. And, these problems aren't just relegated to us Window's folk - the Mac folks are having their share of problem as well.
I am running on Windows 2000 SP 4 on an ASUS motherboard with 1GB RAM. I meet the minimum recommended requirements.
When can I expect the situation to be remedied?

Ok. I read just about everything on in this discussion group and Apple notes.
I then declared all out war on this this evening. I won.
    Here's what I did:
    1. Assumption - you have Norton AV or Norton System Works installed. I suppose it will work if you have NIS installed.
    2. Removed ALL my anti-spyware programs (i.e. Spybot 1.3 and Microsoft's Anti-Spyware).
    3. Rebooted.
    4. Opened up Norton AV settings in Norton System Works and selected Internet Worm Protection.
    5. Under Applications - Added iTunes and iTunes Helper. Set operation to PERMIT ALL.
    6. Under "General Rules", I added a new rule named "iTunes".
    7. Under the "Communications Tab", I added a rule to allow UDP traffic to both local and remote ports 5353.
    8. Rebooted.
    9. This time, when the system started, I got a message indicating that "application iTunes is trying to access the internet." Clicked on "Remember and allowed the operation.
At this point, things started working.
The removal of the Anti-spyware programs MAY or MAY NOT be necessary. I will add them back in to see if they make any difference or not.
Now - Apple, my suggestion to you is to PUBLISH the ports and protocols and network targets. I was only able to gleam the ports used because Sygate indicated that iTunes was using UDP port 5353 to communicate.
Anyway, for those of you with this problem and are running ANY of the programs mentioned here, try my recommended course of action.
    Charles
P.S. Now, I need to figure out what causes the occassional skip/stutter. But, my iTunes is working.

  • Unknown error (-208) iPod won't update in iTunes, HELP!

Yeah, that error comes up when ever I try to update my iPod. It only started hapening today and I need to update because I'm going somewhere boaring and I need my new videos/music!
Can some one please tell me why this is happening and how to fix it!?
I still have plenty of room and I am running new versions of Mac OS X, iTunes and my iPod is up to date.

The error code could mean that you 'iTunes Library' file is corrupted.
I haven't heard about this error code in conjunction with the iPod, only know this article:
iTunes: "Error -208 Cannot Open iTunes Music Library" Alert
    Try the 5 R's first.
If that leads to nothing, you may have to rebuild your library as mentioned in this article:
How to recreate your iTunes Library
    Hope this helps.

what does the unexpected error (-208) mean?? i havent modded my ipod in any way.

If you are trying to "extend" using wireless only, you may not be aware that Apple designed the "extend" feature as a proprietary setting to only work with other Apple routers.
It is extremely unlikely that this will work with a Cisco router.
If your plans call for connecting the AirPort Express to the Cisco router using a wired Ethernet connection, it should be possible to configure the Express that way.

  • Mac OS error -208 when opening MIDI files in Quicktime Pro

Quicktime no longer plays MIDI files. it used to. now i get the Mac OS error -208 claiming the file is corrupted. but i can play the file on a PC, and other people receiving the files by email can open them (though a few other Mac owners are now also having trouble for the first time).
this problem started about two weeks ago. i did nothing different to my machine (MacBook pro), and wonder if a background system update is to blame.
i uninstalled Quicktime and reinstalled it. no luck. any ideas?

here's some further clarification, provided by John Hetland, who worked out the fix:
    1. The MIDI analyzer I used is a cool freeware program midi2txt.exe from
    http://www.gnmidi.com/
    2. When I ran midi2txt with the -error switch and the name of the MIDI file,
it said something like "Warning: 21 bytes of garbage at end of file." It
turned out that the MIDI file was made in fixed-length records, and there
was space left over in the last record. This situation is simply ignored by
most players, but the current version of QuickTime apparently doesn't know
what to do if the file is not EXACTLY the length needed for the MIDI codes.
    3. I can't give instructions for fixing the error because what I fixed was
not any MIDI file; I fixed the program I wrote that generated the flawed
MIDIs. But if someone should encounter this very problem in a MIDI from some
other source, and that someone has expertise in file manipulation, one
should look for hex 'FF2F00' in the last record and delete everything that
    follows it.

  • Error -208 when trying to play midi files

hey, i used to be able to open midi files no problem, then within the last week or two when I try to open them I get error -208. I know the files aren't corrupt, so I'm wondering why I'm now getting this file error.

This is a user to user forum. If you know it is a Quicktime bug, you should report this using the Feedback link (which will get seen by Apple personnel).
I said I knew for certain that it's NOT corrupted files (because they work fine everywhere else, other programs, my synth, etc.), and I'm only assuming it's a QT bug, because that's what I'm assuming plays them, and the error window shows the QT logo, and says it's a "movie that can't be opened"!
And I just now sent feedback to Apple, thanks for the link...
I already said I don't use midi files: so what application should open them? Or do you think it is just QT getting the file type wrong?
What has happened between them opening OK and the problem? What else has been installed?
Yes QT is getting the file type wrong, and QT is what I have set to play them, and it does, 70% of the time, no idea why some just won't play...
The only new thing are the newest updates, as they come down the pike, I don't remember exactly when this began, but it was fairly recently. It could be tied to the QT update...

  • Unknown Error -208 when syncing ipod

Hey Folks having some massive problems with my new ipod. A couple days ago the ipod froze when i was on the bus, after that every time i hooked my ipod into my mac i got the error -208 can not sync ipod. The thing is the ipod was updating.
While trying to Trouble shot this i did the restore ipod with itunes 7.0.2, and guess what i am still getting the error. Even more annoying since i restored i can no longer sync my contacts and calendar. when i check the sync contacts box it tells me i have no contacts.
I have looked through the different solutions in the forums and none of them have worked for me.
    Any Help much appreciated.

    PowerBook G4 15   Mac OS X (10.4.1)

Thanks Kylene that solved the error message and the photo's not updating. For some Reason it even solved the calender's syncing problem.
I am still having the problem of itunes not liking my contacts though. Every time i try to check the sync contacts i keep getting that my address book has no contacts.
I have deleted the application support files, as some one suggestd in another thread, and that didn't work.
But at least 2/3 of the problems are solved.

  • Trouble with with a error 208

I am trying to download from the itune store but my download is interrupted and I get a error 208. Please help

Well, I am using OS X 10.3.7, so maybe that makes a difference, but...
When I ran the script with a couple of messages selected, it seemed to do the right thing and did not give "The variable replyMessage is not defined". I had reply windows open with the address and subject correct.
Unfortunately, each message window did have an error message:
Error: The message could not be saved
which is curious since there is no command to save the message in the script.
Sometimes this sort of problem can arise when a non-printing character has ended up being typed in the variable name, or at the beginning or the end. Superficially it looks the same, but to the computer it is different from oher instances. Try selecting from a few characters before to a few characters after each occurrence of the variable name, and retype them. This should clear up uny non-printing characters. (In case you are wondering why I did not get the non-printing characters, they would have probably been stripped out when the text was sent to Apple Discussions or when it was displayed in my browser.)
BTW, I think the code segment:
    tell replyMessage
    set visible to true
    end tell
is not really necessary - the windows are visible even if those lines are omitted.
    Cheers

  • Cannot update ipod, unknown error (-208)

    Hello,
For the past two months I've been using an 80GB iPod with my MacBook Pro, automatically syncing every few days, without a hitch. Suddenly, every time I try to update the iPod, I get an error to the effect of "iPod <foo> cannot be updated. Unknown error occurred (-208)."
I restored the iPod and synced it again. Everything was copied over fine, except for my contacts and the one photo album I want to copy over. So I tweaked those settings and first iTunes said I had no contacts to sync, and would I want to open Address Book. I open Address Book and sure enough, all my contacts are there. I get the same message about iCal, even though there are appointments in it. The photos did not copy over either.
Syncing even without those settings still brings up the error -208.
I googled around and couldn't find anything specific about this error code. When I looked up Apple error codes, I found this page: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=9805, and the if it's the same error as the one I'm seeing in iTunes, it's a Sound Manager Error:
-208 badFileFormat File is corrupt or unusable, or not AIFF or AIFF-C
What's also weird is that iTunes says this iPod has 12,486 songs on it, while the iTunes library itself has 12,489 songs. But in the About screen on the iPod itself, it says I have 12,491 songs. I also have bought only 5 songs from the iTunes Store. Coincidence? Those songs play on the iPod just fine.
All my music is stored on an external firewire drive. But that's been the case since I owned my previous iBook, so it's not a new issue.
Anyone see this before? Anyone figure out a workaround?
    Many thanks!
    pete
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   all songs stored on external firewire drive for 2 years

I posted too soon. Just read another post regarding
a folder called "iPod Photo Cache". I am on a Mac
and found two such folders named this: one was in
the Pictures folder, the second was in the iPhoto
Library folder. I deleted them both. I re-started
iTunes, checked off to Sync iPhoto albums in the iPod
"tab area" (not sure what that screen in iTunes is
called), hit the Apply button and iTunes proceeded to
optimize my photos for my iPod and sync them. No
    more (-208) error!
Wow, this solved my issue... Thanks!
