Error 2096 - Reinstall

I've tried to open my Itunes multiple times, and no matter what I do it still won't open and gives me the same error.
It tells me to reinstall Itunes, and I've deleted both quicktime and itunes and still, it gives me the same error. What do I do?!

You need to make sure both iTunes and QuickTime are NOT running in compatability mode...

  • Install itunes with error -2096

When I finish installing setup.exe and open itunes, there is a line that: Quicktime failed to initialize (error -2096).QuickTime is required to run iTunes. Please reinstall iTunes.
I have reinstalled many times, but it still appears that line.
So how can I install iTunes?

When I finish installing setup.exe and open itunes, there is a line that: Quicktime failed to initialize (error -2096).QuickTime is required to run iTunes. Please reinstall iTunes.
let's try getting the following possibilities off the table.
First, make sure you're not running QuickTime in any sort of compatibility mode, as per the following document:
Error -2096 message when opening QuickTime for Windows in Compatibility Mode
... but if no joy there, also check to make sure you're not running iTunes in any sort of compatibility mode:
iTunes for Windows: How to turn off Compatibility Mode
(Make sure that all boxes in the iTunes Compatibility mode tab are unchecked, not just the compatibility box.)
    Any help with your 2096?

I have contacted Apple support; they sent me here.
I had this problem about 2 months ago and Apple walked me through it. Now they cant find me case file and I can't remember what I did to fix and connect to itunes and my ipods and ipad...
    Any suggestions?

SO iTunes thinks you don't have Quicktime although you do have it.
This can be caused by a problem with the environmental variable path, although I don't normally associate this with the 2096 error.
There is normally an entry for Quicktime right at the end of PATH, and iTunes uses it.
However if any of the folders in path variable before Quicktime do not exist or cannot be reached, iTunes gives up and assumes you don't have Quicktime.
If you are and experience computer user this may be enough for you to investigate the problem.
If not I can give details.
AS a start you can look at the contents of the path variable by opening the cmd window. (type cmd into your run box).
Then copy&paste the following line into the cmd window and press return
    echo %path%
This will display the contents of the PATH variable.
If you need detailed help post back.

Whereabouts on the PC did you create the new library, carol? (By default, if you don't choose a new location, it's stashed in a folder in one of the following locations:

  • Error   -2096,       iTunes will not run  HELP AAAAAAAAARRRGGGGGGHHHHHHH

    Anyone PLEASE HELP.......
My processor died so I now have a new one.
I have been forced to download the new version of iTunes.
Everything seems ok until I try to "run" iTunes and the following error message appears.
    Quick Time Unavailable"
"Quick Time failed to initialize (error-2096)."
"Quick time is required to run iTunes."
    "Please reinstall iTunes".
Quick Time operates fine on its own.
I have reinstalled iTunes multiple times with no success. Is there a fault with the latest software. Earlier versions worked fine !

The 2096 erro may be associated with running in compatabilty mode, see:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305212
None of the tick boxes on the compatability tab should be checked.
It is also worth checking iTunes.exe in c:Program Files\iTunes.

  • Dreaded Error 2096

I just recieved the iPod Touch. Anxious to get it started, I went on to Apple in order to download the version 8 iTunes as well as the newest version of Quicktime Player. At first, I encountered the "compatibility" error for Quicktime; so I turned it off, and now it works. Nonetheless, I continue to recieve that "Error 2096... Please re-install iTunes" message. I have installed (or supposedly installed) version 8 several times, and I have also attemptd to shut the compatibility off of iTunes (attempted being the key word. You see, there doesn't seem to be a compatibility tab.) I have not however, uninstalled and then reinstalled the program, as I fear that I may loose all of my library content.
I noticed that this particular error has been a bit of a nucence for some people; but I felt that maybe writing a more in-depth description of my predicament would be more productive. I am technologicaly inept, so I would really appreciate any sort of advice. Thank you!

Have you followed the advice in this article?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1875?viewlocale=en_US
Note that you have to work on Quicktime.exe in Program files\Quicktime
When you have done QUicktime, carry out the same procedure on iTunes.exe in Program files\iTunes.

  • Quick time failed to initialise, error 2096

I upgraded to itunes 7.1 and now I cannot open itunes. Keep getting the error 2096 message. Tried to reinstall itunes with no luck, same error message.Pliz help.I am losing my cool.

Is your QuickTime working if you try to open it?
If you get a 2096 error, see:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1875
    Otherwise see:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1489
If your QuickTime works normally let me know.
The 2096 error has often been associated with compatability mode problems.
Otherwise try a complete removal of all iTunes related programs:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1925
Then download and install the version of Quicktime that does not include iTunes:
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/win.html
    Check that it works
    Then try installing iTunes.

  • After iTunes 7.6 update:  QuickTime failed to initialize (error -2096

"QuickTime failed to initialize (error -2096).
QuickTime is required to run iTunes. Please reinstall iTunes."
After upgrading to iTunes 7.6 this morning, I get this error when trying to run iTunes or Quicktime. I was using the Apple Updater. I got no errors when running the installer.
I downloaded the 7.6 setup file and attempted to repair the install. I still receive the same error.
There is an article indicating that turning off Compatibility mode would resolve this issue, but Compatibility mode is not turned on for iTues or QuickTime.
The same issue is discussed in the Quicktime forum, here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6400305
I am running on Windows 2003.
Note I had iTunes open earlier today, and it was working fine. It was only when I upgraded to 7.6 (I think I was at 7.4 before. It was definetly 7.something).

Thanks for this discussion and I hope Apple fixes this soon. It took me forever but installing QT 7.2 and installing the less recent itunes update from filehippo finally resolved it for me. Of course the reason it took me forever was that every time I reinstalled itunes, I was using the default setting that was updating QT & Apple also (in hindsight it sounds really dumb, but no one had mentioned that).
This is the first itunes update that has ever gone wrong for me - I've used itunes for 5 yrs (my 1st ipod was a 2nd gen touch wheel). I wonder if some MS developers went to work at Apple to exact revenge...?

  • Getting the message- Quicktime failed to initialize- (error- 2096).....

I can't get into iTunes ever since this 7.6 version came out. I've downloaded it 8 or 9 times, and I have even tried downloading Quicktime separately, but I get the same message every time!! Help me! The full message is:
Quicktime failed to initialize (error- 2096)
Quicktime is required to run iTunes. Please reinstall iTunes.
    So annoying!!!

QuickTime failed to initialize-Error#-2096 QuickTime is required to run itunes.
Let's try to get one set of possibilities off the table.
Head into the Compatibility tab of the Properties for your iTunes.exe as per the following document:
iTunes for Windows: How to turn off Compatibility Mode
... however, when you're in there, make sure that none of the boxes are checked (not just the compatibility mode box).
If iTunes still isn't launching, head into the Compatibility tab of the Properties of your QuickTimePlayer.exe, as per the following document:
Error -2096 message when opening QuickTime for Windows in Compatibility Mode
... again, make sure that none of the boxes in there are checked (not just the compatibility mode box).
    Any help with your 2096?

Same problem for last cople of months. have tried all recommended solution for error#2095 without success. uninstalled and reinstalled, repaired, etc too many times to keep track of. Yet it all runs well on my KDS notebook. Go figure.
It should not be hard....Seems there should be someone at Apple corp that wrote the error detection code associated with error 2096 that could answer this in a flash.
