i try to open itunes and it wont open says quicktime is needed and to re install i tunes
With a 2096, we first try to make sure that neither iTunes nor the QuickTime Player are running in compatibility mode.
Start with the following document:
[Error -2096 message when opening QuickTime for Windows in Compatibility Mode|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1875]
But if none of the boxes are checked in there, check on the iTunes compatibility mode tab:
[iTunes for Windows: How to turn off Compatibility Mode|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1489]
(Also make sure that none of the boxes are checked in the iTunes compatibility mode tab, not just the Compatibility mode checkbox.)

  • My itunes will not open on my computer! I've uninstalled/re-installed my intunes 10.4 and quicktime countless of times, and nothing is working. Everytime I try to open my itunes it says "Quicktime error 2096", then tells me to reinstall itunes. Help?!...

Title pretty much sums it up. I'm getting very frustrated. I've tried turning off the compatability of my Quicktime, and nothing is changed. Can anyone figure out the problem? I can't find an answer anywhere.

Yea i got that same message to Quicktime failed to initialize (error-2096) Quicktime is required to run itunes. Please reinstall itunes, which i did so many times which did'nt work and so i started reading some of the articles on this site. there was one article i read which says right click on quicktimeplayer and click on properties then click compatibilty tab and deselect checkbox or boxes but i only deseleted one box which reads windows vista .windows 2000 or 95 or whatever so i did that opened up itunes again and still i got the same error message then i started thinkin i wonder if i should do the same thing on the itunes player click on properties, click compatibilty tab then deselect box so i did. • Install itunes with error -2096

When I finish installing setup.exe and open itunes, there is a line that: Quicktime failed to initialize (error -2096).QuickTime is required to run iTunes. Please reinstall iTunes.
I have reinstalled many times, but it still appears that line.
So how can I install iTunes?

When I finish installing setup.exe and open itunes, there is a line that: Quicktime failed to initialize (error -2096).QuickTime is required to run iTunes. Please reinstall iTunes.
let's try getting the following possibilities off the table.
First, make sure you're not running QuickTime in any sort of compatibility mode, as per the following document:
Error -2096 message when opening QuickTime for Windows in Compatibility Mode
... but if no joy there, also check to make sure you're not running iTunes in any sort of compatibility mode:
iTunes for Windows: How to turn off Compatibility Mode
(Make sure that all boxes in the iTunes Compatibility mode tab are unchecked, not just the compatibility box.)
    Any help with your 2096?

    Error:2096
Quicktime is reguired to run itunes. Please uninstall and then reinstall itunes.
I have done this several times.
    I have updated Windows
    I have installed, uninstalled Quicktime
    I have checked compatibility
I have contacted Apple support; they sent me here.
I had this problem about 2 months ago and Apple walked me through it. Now they cant find me case file and I can't remember what I did to fix and connect to itunes and my ipods and ipad...
    Any suggestions?

SO iTunes thinks you don't have Quicktime although you do have it.
This can be caused by a problem with the environmental variable path, although I don't normally associate this with the 2096 error.
There is normally an entry for Quicktime right at the end of PATH, and iTunes uses it.
However if any of the folders in path variable before Quicktime do not exist or cannot be reached, iTunes gives up and assumes you don't have Quicktime.
If you are and experience computer user this may be enough for you to investigate the problem.
If not I can give details.
AS a start you can look at the contents of the path variable by opening the cmd window. (type cmd into your run box).
Then copy&paste the following line into the cmd window and press return
    echo %path%
This will display the contents of the PATH variable.
If you need detailed help post back.

  • How to install iTunes error-2096???????

I got an Ipod Nano this Christmas so I had to update my itunes in order to be able to sync music to it. I have downloaded the newest version multiple times and it doesn't work. When I try to open it, it tells me Quicktime failed to initialize (error-2096) Quicktime is required to run iTunes. Please reinstall iTunes. I installed Windows Install clean up to remove previous iTunes software but still haven't been able to open it. As I type this, I am downloading iTunes again. I am going crazy, I need my music!!!!! Please HELP!!!

You need to make sure both iTunes and QuickTime are NOT running in compatability mode...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305212
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302478
This sorted my -2096 error out straight away without having to reinstall, etc.

  • I installed itunes and quick time  but when I try to open itunes I get a message that reads "quicktime failed to initialize (error -2096)"

I installed itunes and quick time  but when I try to open itunes I get a message that reads "quicktime failed to initialize (error -2096).  I have removed both itunes and quicktime from my computer and re-installed them and I still get the same message.  What do I do to get itunes to work?

That one is often a compatibility mode problem. Try the following document, only be sure that none of the boxes in the compatibility mode tab are checked (not just the compatibility mode box itself):
iTunes for Windows: How to turn off Compatibility Mode

  • When I try to open iTunes, I receive a QuickTime failed to initialize (error-2096).

When I try to open iTunes, I receive:  "QuickTime failed to initialize (error - 2096).  It also tells me to unistall iTunes and then install iTunes again.  If I uninstall iTunes, will I lose all my songs and videos?

Follow these instructions to completely remove Apple software
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923
Then use free Ccleaner to repeatly repair your registry until it's fixed.
    http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download/standard
    download iTunes again from Apple.
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/
If you have 64bit Vista or Windows 7, look for the seperate download of iTunes for that further down the page.
Once installed, use the Apple Software Update under your Start Menu to fully update all Apple components.
Your content will remain on the drive in the Music > iTunes Folder, nothing is deleted.
You should be making backups of your content regularly, either through iTunes or via copying the iTunesFolder in your Music folder to a external drive.

  • Compatibility Mode for itunes 10.3 due to error 2096

i have uninstalled and reinstalled itunes several times and still get the "error 2096" message. followed all steps as directed for removal. does this have anything to do with the compatility mode? should it be checked or unchecked? can anyone help?

Whereabouts on the PC did you create the new library, carol? (By default, if you don't choose a new location, it's stashed in a folder in one of the following locations:
    Microsoft Windows XP
    \Documents and Settings\[your username]\My Documents\My Music\
    Microsoft Windows Vista
    \Users\[your username]\Music\
    Microsoft Windows 7
    \Users\[your username]\My Music\

  • I tunes wont launch - quicktime error -2096

I am using XP sp2. Have de-installed itunes and quicktime and gone for a clean new download and install of both. But I still get this error when opening itunes - Quicktime failed to initialise (error -2096) etc.
This is v. frustrating - any suggestions?

You need to check that compatability mode is not on for Quicktime:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305212
None of the checkboxes should be checked on the compatability tab.
It is also advisable to check the same thing for iTunes.exe in Program Files\iTunes.

  • Error -2096 on Mac when trying to connect to iTunes Store

For at least two months, my computer has not been able to log in to the apple store. I keep getting the message "error (-2096)". I have talked to many apple store representatives who have asked me to delete and re-download iTunes, which has not helped. Some have given me the tutorial for Windows, and that obviously did not help either. I think I could be something to do with my ISP address, but I have no idea how to go about fixing that. The main iTunes store page shows up with the available music, etc. but I just can't log in or buy anything. So frustrating! anyone who knows how to go about fixing this, please help! Thanks.

If you can't remember your answers you'll have to reset them.  See https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4551.

  • Quicktime error 2096?

I'm trying to download itunes 7.5 for my son's new nano 4g, 3rd generation. the download seems successful but when I click when I try to open it it says Quicktime failed to initialize: error 2096. I redownloaded both itunes and quicktime and restarted Quicktime will open but not itunes. Anybody have an idea?

Well, I think the problem has been cured!!!
Some further and deeper searching into this forum highlighted among the many pages a one line entry from:
'idiot rying to help' to whom I find my self deeply indebted.... and such a simple answer!
See this thread and the entry is towards the bottom of the page:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=3377407
If anyone comes across the same problem as I have described, simply go to the QuickTime Properties and change it to run in Windows 2000 and not Windows XP.
I hope Apple (or MS) will take notice of this and perhaps look at a fix - it is so straighforward!

  • Error   -2096,       iTunes will not run  HELP AAAAAAAAARRRGGGGGGHHHHHHH

    Anyone PLEASE HELP.......
My processor died so I now have a new one.
I have been forced to download the new version of iTunes.
Everything seems ok until I try to "run" iTunes and the following error message appears.
    Quick Time Unavailable"
"Quick Time failed to initialize (error-2096)."
"Quick time is required to run iTunes."
    "Please reinstall iTunes".
Quick Time operates fine on its own.
I have reinstalled iTunes multiple times with no success. Is there a fault with the latest software. Earlier versions worked fine !

The 2096 erro may be associated with running in compatabilty mode, see:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305212
None of the tick boxes on the compatability tab should be checked.
It is also worth checking iTunes.exe in c:Program Files\iTunes.

  • I cant open itunes cause quick time failed to initialize (error - 2096)

i cant open itunes cause quick time failed to initialize (error - 2096)

    hmmmm.
doublechecking something before proceeding ... are any boxes ticked in the Compatibility tab for your QuickTime?
(i've seen that message produced when some of the Display Settings boxes in there are ticked, not just the compatibility mode one.)

  • Dreaded Error 2096

I just recieved the iPod Touch. Anxious to get it started, I went on to Apple in order to download the version 8 iTunes as well as the newest version of Quicktime Player. At first, I encountered the "compatibility" error for Quicktime; so I turned it off, and now it works. Nonetheless, I continue to recieve that "Error 2096... Please re-install iTunes" message. I have installed (or supposedly installed) version 8 several times, and I have also attemptd to shut the compatibility off of iTunes (attempted being the key word. You see, there doesn't seem to be a compatibility tab.) I have not however, uninstalled and then reinstalled the program, as I fear that I may loose all of my library content.
I noticed that this particular error has been a bit of a nucence for some people; but I felt that maybe writing a more in-depth description of my predicament would be more productive. I am technologicaly inept, so I would really appreciate any sort of advice. Thank you!

Have you followed the advice in this article?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1875?viewlocale=en_US
Note that you have to work on Quicktime.exe in Program files\Quicktime
When you have done QUicktime, carry out the same procedure on iTunes.exe in Program files\iTunes.

  • ITunes 8 cuts and pops audio

I first noticed while playing video podcasts that audio would stop and start randomly. At first I chalked this up to being a bad download or something. However audio continues to cut out in TV Shows I download and pre-existing music does it now too.
