Error 3004 during restore - solutions aren't working

Hi there, computer whizzes, programmers, knowledgable teenagers and master problem-solvers!
Now, I'm aware this sort of error is very common, and I've read pages and pages of forums and manuals, watched several videos and even bought a book on using iTunes for Windows. It's a simple, I'm told - iTunes want to connect to its servers to "verify" my restore/update, and it simply cannot get through!
Let me put this in better context...
(Yesterday, Nov 21st, 2013) I'm syncing my 5th Generation iPod Touch (never been jailbroken) to iTunes on my Windows 7 desktop PC (my hardware is ridiculously overpowered, so it's not a performance issue), like I've done, without issues, since I bought it in September of this year.
Now, guess what? iTunes alerts me that there's a software update for my iPod - iOS 7.0.4 or whatever it is. I think, "why not?" - the world's largest technology company will hardly be able to mess this up, will they? So I click download and install. It does so, and I'd better mention I originally had a 3-month-or-so out-of-date version of iTunes doing this (I wasn't bothered about the frequent updates, since I don't often experience problems with slightly outdated versions). After downloading the 1.2GB file containing the compressed iOS using iTunes' build-in download client, I clicked whatever it was that asked me if I wanted to install it on my iPod. The program runs for a bit, presumably backing up my iPod and removing the old iOS, essentially placing it back in factory settings ready for a new operating system:
This is where the problem begins...
Now, my memory may have failed me on a few of the minor details, but basically it reached the point where it was about to install the new iOS, having extracted the compressed file downloaded from the internet. At this point, with the progress bar in the iTunes programme literally one or two pixels from completion point, the dreaded noise of the windows alert pops up, along with an error message:
The pictures above are in order of appearance during the restore process, and this exact cycle has repeated itself about 20 - 30 times (yes, I've tried pretty much every solution out there).
I updated iTunes to the latest version as soon as the problem appeared, since my experience tells me that outdated software usually causes problems with upgrading a company's products.
The solutions I've been given have included:
- Re-installation of iTunes
- Disabling security software (I have AVG Internet security, paid version)
- Restarting computer
- Doing a selective start-up including only iTunes, mobile device utilities and quicktime
- "Repairing" iTunes
- Removing all perpherals connected to my system
- Changing my USB port (I have about 12 of them, and tried every single one)
- Fiddling with DFU mode
- Replacing the "hosts" file, or modifying it
- Re-downloading the iOS within iTunes.
- Restarting my wired connection to my router
None of these have worked at all - none have even changed which error message I get. Without exception, I've received error 3004 on each of my 20-30 attempts at a restore. It's very frustrating, to say the least - my organiser, my jukebox, my iMessenger, my calendar, my notes - they're all stuck as a backup within my computer in unusable form. My iPod's "bricked" to use a common phrase on these sites, and it's gradually, but surely, reducing my faith in Apple as the world's greatest electronics company.
Another suggestion was to use iTunes' "run diagnostics" feature. These are my results, which are also consistent without exception
As you can see, it seems the internet connection is the issue. So of course, using the same computer, I used Chrome to use THE INTERNET to search for a solution. I'm not ridiculously computer-"savvy", but I do know how to follow some fairly complex instuctions in computer use. So, in my probably naive opinion, I think the box above shows one or two issues with this diagnostics software. I apparently have no internet connection, yet iTunes is able to make a secure link to its Store, and suggest solutions found on the internet. If you're still in doubt, the iTunes Store works fine, as usual. I most obviously have internet connection.
If any of you computer geniuses have made it this far, here's what the diagnostics program within iTunes created for me, with my security software disabled:

It's a long list of technicalities, and if you, brave genius, can solve my desperate 1st-world problem, please post an answer. I'd be most grateful, and I'm sure it'll help out some unlucky people in the future. I'm pretty much at breaking point - hence the post on Apple's help forum. I'm hoping I've missed something obvious, since I'm not going to re-install my whole Windows 7 operating system. I'd rather buy a Mac. Just kidding. I'll never buy Mac now.

1.) Locate "C:/Windows/System32/Drivers/etc/hosts". Copy the "hosts" file onto your desktop as a backup if any errors may occur during the process.
2.) As an administrator, open the "hosts" file inside "etc" folder with Notepad and erase the last lines related to gs-apple that looks like this:
"#127.0.0.1 gs·apple·com"
3.) Restart iTunes if opened and connect your device after it is in DFU mode.
4.) Casually do a restore like normal, and you're done.
5.) After restore is completed, replace the "hosts" file inside the "etc" folder with the backup you've copied onto your Desktop to prevent possible future errors. Hope this works!

  • ERROR 3004 during iOS 7 instalation

Hi did someone know why this happend ? I try to upgrade to iOS 7 with new iTunes 11.1. Download was perfect and fast. But during preparing iPhone for upgrate I got error 3004. Since this error I tried all -> delete all iphone, delete all apple products and instal them again, restore phone from deposit and many more... nothing helped. I think problem is not in my phone. I have same error also in one situation when I try restore iPhone from factory restore. I have error 3004 too. But when I restore phone form my restore I dont have this problem. Any help please ?

Here is my solution...I tried for a couple of hours and I stumbled upon this...
    - Unplug your ipad and make sure its in recovery mode
    - Make sure you have newest iTunes installed
    - Goto C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc
    - Make new folder here (name it ipsw) You will also need administrative priviliges
    - Move the ipsw files to new folder that you created in the C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc directory
    - Plug your ipad back in recovery mode
    - Select your ipsw from the NEW ipsw folder in the C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc directory by holding the "SHIFT" key when you choose the "RESTORE IPAD"

  • HELP! iPhone 4 is BLANK after trying to update to iOS 6, error message during restore...

I tried to submit question to Apple Support, but I have to enter my phone's serial number and it doesn't work! From what I can gather, it wasn't restored, so I can't get the serial #!!!
When I connected to iTunes earlier this evening, a window popped up about updating iOS.  (I had to update thru iTunes b/c I've never updated iOS!)
I chose "download & update".  After ~2 hours of downloading software, it began doing some different things, soon after it started the restore process, an error message popped up.  The first suggestion was to download the newest version of iTunes, which I did, next-restart laptop, opened iTunes, and iPhone doesn't show as a device, and choices like "sync" are gray (can't choose them).
By looking through and reading other questions and answers in the community, I think I've found the backups stored on my computer.
I just can't get anything to work.  proc
I love my phone, please, please help!
In pretty easy to understand terms.  (please no talk of clouds, etc. )
I didn't do any backups myself prior to starting b/c it clearly said all of those things would be backed up and restored during the process.
    thank you!

when I started the update I was at the end of the preparing to download phase and now my screen is just flashing on and off with apple logo

  • Can't get iPhone 4s out of recovery mode and always get error 40 during restore

I tried updating to ios 6.1.2 and I left it for a while since I had to do some stuff. When I came back, my iPhone is in recovery mode and I can't get it to restore using itunes. I always get error 40. I tried restoring on a different pc but it's still a no go. Is it possible that this has something to do with the hardware? I've already looked up possible solutions but my iphone's still in recovery mode. I never had this phone opened nor did I attempt to jailbreak it or anything. I tried asking my carrier for assistance but they're charging me for repairs. The fee's pretty expensive.

  • Installing Framework 3.5 fails with error code 0x800F081F - default solutions don't work

The installation of .NET framework 3.5 fails on Windows 10 Tech preview. I tried it using:
    1. = Programs and features - using Windows Update - results in error 0x800F081F
    2. = using the local media with DISM /Online /Enable-Feature /FeatureName:NetFx3 /All /LimitAccess /Source:d:\sources\sxs - it reports in de dism log that the feature NetFx3 is an unknown feature (with an elevated account)
    3. = changing the group policy (it is an AD connected system) using the steps as described in the following technet: dn482065
    4. = using the installer dotnetfx35.exe - it also brings up the 'programs and features' window with the same results as 1.
    Any ideas? Regards,
     Mike

    Hi mv4neck,
Error code 0x800F081F means that we can’t find a source for the files we need to install the feature you’re requesting.
In you first way, you use Windows update to download related component files, so I suggest you run dism command to restore system health:
    Windows Update error 0x800F081F
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-in/windows-8/windows-update-error-0x800f081f
Make sure you have good network condition.
    Here is my situation:
For your second way, based on my observation, there is no such component files in 9841 DVD\source\sxs folder.
    So this command wouldn’t work:
    DISM /Online /Enable-Feature /FeatureName:NetFx3 /All /LimitAccess /Source:d:\sources\sxs
In the meantime, by default, the install.wim doesn’t include NetFx3:

  • Error 3194 during restoring

cant restore phone getting error 3194

    Goto --
    My Computer --> C Drive--> Windows --> System32-->Drivers-->Etc--> Host File
-Cut (remove) this host file and past it on desktop.
-Now comeback to itunes - provided you have fresh itune installation after removing it COMPLETELY from your system (Ref- http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923?viewlocale=en_US).
-Plug in your iphone to  your windows via active USB port (no hub) and with good internet connection.
    - Repeat  the ios update process and avoid doing multitasking ( I was lil careful... :)).. And that worked for me ...updation took max 10 min's.
    - Once the ios updation process is done , follow the instructions and complete the ragistration process. restart your iphone and its on ios 6 EnJOY !
    - Put the HOST file back to its original  path.
If this resolves your problem , Like it :-)

  • HT1918 My credit card won't work, and the general solutions aren't working.

About a month ago I changed my debit card on my itunes account after I had some fraudulant activity in my bank account.  Itunes rejected the new card as not matching the bank information.  However, each time I try to fix it, it charges my bank account $1.40.  This is only in my pending charges, it never sticks.  After checking all the banking information with the bank to make sure address matched, I was instructed to go the USPS website and check the zip code.  I did and changed it.  It still rejected the card with the same error.  I've tried to update it online and on my phone.  My itunes account is stating that I have a charge for something I purchased.  I'M TRYING TO PAY IT.  It keeps kicking back my cards.
Yesterday, I remembered that I have another debit card attached to an account I don't really use often, so I transfered a few dollars over and tried to use that card.  It stated that the security code was invalid.  It wasn't because I was looking right at it and tried to enter it a few times.
This is really frustrating.  I can't even update my free apps or download anything on my iphone 4s.

Same thing is happening to me and I cannot for the life of me speak to a human being who seems to have any clue as to what is going on. Can't get or update apps on my iPhone or iPad. It's ridiculous. Would love to hear whether you found a solution to this issue. Thanks!

That error is likely caused by the jailbreaking process.

  • IPhone 4 - Error 9 during Restore

    Hi there,
I'm trying to Restore the iPhone but Error 9 keeps popping up. The iPhone is literally a dud now just stuck on the screen with the cable and iTunes symbol.
I've tried doing the Restore on a 13" MB Pro, iMac and Windows Vista 64 bit, all bringing up the same error. I am running iTunes 9.2.1 on all machines.
    Any advice or info appreciated.
    Thanks.

i agree mate the restore should fix the problem but guess what, it forces itunes to do the update. SO update is faulty and restores forces the update see the problem
Does the iPhone come with a warranty?
All iPhones, including reconditioned models, come with a 1 year limited Manufacturers warranty. If your iPhone experiences technical issues within a year of purchase, then the product can be returned to the point of purchase with a valid till receipt or other proof or purchase to enable repair, replacement or refund as appropriate. If you buy online, the easiest way to organise a repair or exchange is via Apple online, alternatively contact customer services.
