Error 36 trying to copy from a microsd card to iMac.

Just got a helmet cam. I took my forst videos but initially couldn't read the .avi files. The cam company pointed me at VLC which means I could view the movies but I am unable to copy the files to my hard disk.
"The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “130104-120116.AVI” can’t be read or written. (Error code -36)"
I'm struggling to find anything related to this specific problem as most appear to be trying to copy files from a Mac to a FAT32 formatted disk rather than the other way round and also implicate Snow Leopard although I'm getting the same problem on all my Macs (Tiger 10.4 Macbook, a Snow Leopard 10.6 iMac and a Mountain Lion 10.7 iMac)
The camera and card are brand new so I can't see it's likely to be a hardware issue.
I thought of trying to import the files directly into iMovie but iMovie doesn't recognise the camera although Finder is showing it.
Any ideas?
Thanks

I'd recommend checking your Console.app (located in Applications/Utilities/) for any I/O errors (most common source of -36 errors).
Any I/O errors reported on disk0s2 will be an issue with your computer's hard drive.
Any I/O errors reported on anything other than disk0s2 will be an issue with the disk you're installing from.
Either way, these are typically indicative of serious issues with the disk referenced, and I would recommend seeking replacement as soon as possible to avoid any potential data loss.

  • Error code -36 trying to copy from iPhoto library

    Hi all,
A friend has just brought me his 17" Mac Book Pro which refuses to boot. I started in target mode connected to a Mac Pro to see if I could rescue his data, (no backup as usual). The first thing that I see is that he has 2.3Gb of space left which tells me what the problem is so I want to copy some of his data of the laptop. As he has a lot of photo's (60 Gb) I thought that I would copy a chunk of them and delete them from his library just to get space but I keep getting a message that says "Some data in IMG_xxxx.jpg can't be read ot written. error Code -36". Any ideas how to get round this.

  • Error message while Copying from one External HD to another

Hi all, I am trying to copy my music library to a new external HD from my old one, they are the same drive but one is bigger. My collection is about 300 gb. When I go to copy it it will get a few gigs into the transfer then an error saiy, "-36 error some of the data in a particular file cannot be read or written.
I thought I may have corrupt files so I tried to play the track in itunes, the track crashed about 15 sec in and made itunes frreeze. So I deleted it. I continued to do this for each track that had issues, but It seems like its going to be a long time.
I also got the error message for one track that played perfectly in itunes, so now i dont know what the problem is.
Does anyone know of a program I can use to determine if tracks are corrupt? Or a solution to this issue?
I also went into disk utility and it says both drives are working OK.
I would aprreciate any help, thanks

Use Get Info on both the volumes in question - assuming neither are your system or time machine disks. If there is an option for ignoring ownership - way at the bottom of the Get Info window - select it to cause ownership to be ignored. Try copy again.
I am about 100% sure this might possibly perhaps kind of hopefully help. But it wont hurt either... and I am also assuming you have used disk utility to repair both disks. And if one is a new drive... go ahead and reformat it first.

  • How to reference/play video from the MicroSD card

I am developing an interactive video application using AIR on Android and need to store media on an external MicroSD card.  How do I access that file location in AIR?  I have tried:
    /mnt/Removable/MicroSD/
    /mnt/external1/
    etc.
    Is there code similar to:
    var myFile:File = File.documentsDirectory.resolvePath("Test Folder/test.txt");
That would allow me to reference the external storage?

OK...I am highly confused.  And I think you are a bit confused too...adding to the confusion.
Log and CAPTURE is for capturing from tape. If you aren't capturing from tape...but rather an SD card...do not use Log and CAPTURE.  Tapeless capture uses log and TRANFER.  That's what I mention in that tutorial.
    >How do I set up the preferences so that I get the capture window that shows the clips that I can import (capture) from my SD card?
Watch the video again. You open Log and Transfer...click on the folder icon on the upper left...and then navigate to the backup of the card you make.  The FIRST step is to back up that card.  Then you use L&T...and direct it to the root level of the backup folder.  You click OK and all the clips in that folder will appear in the Log and Transfer window.
    >I keep getting prompted with a message that my HDV deck is not connected.
Because you are opening Log and CAPTURE.  Again...log and transfer is what you want.
    >I'm just trying to have my video be captured wirelessly from the SD card into FCP.
Sorry, you can't do that. You cannot do this wirelessly. You need to connect the camera to the computer with a wire...typically USB.  OR...you take the SD card out and either use an SD card reader connected to the computer via a cable (USB), or if you have a laptop with an SD card slot...well then, that would be wireless. Just slap the card into the computer and watch it show up on the desktop.  Then back up the footage, then Log and Transfer.
    >It's got to do something with setting it up in wither Easy Setup menu or one of the others.
No. You do not need to use the Easy Setups. That is for tape capture. You determine what codec you will be converting to in the Log and Transfer preferences. Watch the video again...I explain this thoroughly.

  • Officejet Pro 8600 Plus N911 Tries to Copy from ADF if Lid Covering the Glass is Completely Open

    Hi,
I just posted a reply to the following regarding an identical problem that I am having:
      http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Scanning-Faxing-and-Copying/Officejet-Pro-8600-N911n-Printer-Tries-to-C...
It occurs to me, however, that the original post I replied to is so old that it is probably better to post my problem in a new thread.
I've borrowed some of the original poster's wording since his explanation of the problem was very clear and concise...
If I have the lid that covers the glass completely open on my HP Officejet 8600 Plus (N911) printer then it usually tries to feed pages from the ADF to copy and then reports a jam since I have not put anything in the ADF. If I partly or completely shut the lidthen it copies from the glass properly. This problem arises when I want to copy pages from a thick book for which it is very incovenient (and not really possible) to hold the book firmly in position with two hands while closing the lid with a third hand.
I think the problem is that the ADF sensors that detect when the ADF is loaded with paper are normally held in the position indicating no paper by gravity. When the lid is completely open it goes past 90 degrees, so gravity causes them to be fall into a position where the sensors are tripped.
We contacted Courtney, a Case Manager on the "HP AMS TCO Escalations Team" and she insisted that the 8600 is able to copy from the glass with the lid open and that our unit must be defective. She sent a new unit, but it had the same problem since it is a design flaw, not a manufacturing defect. When we called her back she did not seem to concerned that the 8600 could not copy with the lid open and did not really want to pursue our problem any further. We asked whether we could switch to an equivalent model that can copy with the lid open, but she said that the 8600 is their top-of-the-line model and there is no equivalent model. In the end, she offered to "buy back" the printer.
Has anyone else had this problem? Is there any fix so that I can copy with the lid completely open? Perhaps a firmware update so the printer realizes that if the lid is open then it should ignore the ADF? I would even be OK with a menu item that lets you disable the ADF.
Does anyone from HP monitor this forum and can they test this out and report the flaw to the design team, or suggest a work-around to me?
     Thanks!

    Paul,
I noticed that when the cover is completely open (90 degrees), there is a chime sound and the ADF symbol lights up in the upper right hand corner.  If I lower the lid a bit, I can press the copy button and get the copy started before the symbol lights up.  This is the same chime and symbol that lights up when pages are placed in the ADF.
I tried putting shims (small pads of post-its about 1/8" thick) under the bottom edge of the printer in the back.  That is enough to prevent the sensor from engaging the ADF with the top opened fully.  Yipee, hands free operation.  HP would probably say I voided the warranty.
Maybe the printer was tested on a table that was not level.

  • Strange error trying to restore from time machine sparsebundle

I had my iMac hard drive go bad, so I replaced it, powered the unit back up and booted into the Snow Leopard install disk.
I got to the step where I'm trying to restore from my Time Machine .sparsebundle and I selected the date and time of the backup I wanted to restore. When I click Next to go the next screen (Select a Destination) the utility gets stuck "Searching for Disks," and below that a warning icon says
"This disk does not have enough space to restore your system."
This sounds scary, and as the Time Machine drive now has the sole copy of my data I'm reluctant to do anything to it.
Does anyone know what's going on?
    Thanks in advance,
    Dan.

Are you sure the new drive is formatted properly?
Check it via Disk Utility (you can get there from the same Utilities menu where you selected +Restore from backups).+
Select the top line of the drive (with size and make). Be sure the *Partition Map Scheme* at the bottom says +GUID Partition Table.+
Then select the next line, with the name you gave it, and be sure the Format shown towards the lower left is +Mac OS Extended (Journaled),+ unless you made it +Mac OS Extended (Case-Sensitive, journaled),+
Also see how much space it shows for Available to the right.

  • PLEASE HELP!!! Error - 36 when copying from powerbook to iMac/Lacie HDs

I'm working on a film and have captured to my powerbook G4 in FCP. I am now trying to transfer my scratch disk to either my iMac (intel 2.4GHz) or my Lacie HD extreme 500 GB / Lacie 250 GB.
When I drag the folder over, it starts copying and then at some point (normally about half way through) it says:
"The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in shot 9 could not be read or written (error cose -36)"
It does this for a number of different files in the folder. I have tried copying them one by one, and a few will copy then I'll get to a file and the same error will occur. The files on the powerbook are intact and open and play as expected. I have tried using my powerbook in TD mode with iMac and linking to both Lacie drives with FW400, FW800 and USB.
I haven't tried copying over my network yet but am reluctant to do this as firstly there is over 30GB of material and secondly I worry about the accuracy of a copy over wifi.
I recently had my logic board replaced on powerbook and have done an erase and install of OSX Leopard and am running 10.5.6 on both machines.
I found very little on these boards about error 36 and so would massively appreciate any help on this - this is my first really important scary project and I have a looming deadline!!!
    Cheers

You should use Disk Utility to verify both the source and destination disks. Post the error messages here if you see any.
How is the LaCie formatted? It really should be Mac OS Extended. FAT formatted disks have file size limitations which can cause all kind of problems.

    Joey,
A -36 error is an I/O error. My first though would be a bad cable, but you have apparently tried several of these, over several different busses (the buss could also be a culprit). That leaves a potential disk error.
OK, so you captured this footage on the Powerbook. You did this post-format/reinstall, right? You captured this to the Powerbook's internal drive, right? DV footage (or worse, HD footage) uses huge amounts of disk space. How much? How close to completely full is this internal hard drive? If you allowed the available space to approach zero, especially when running something like FCP, this may have caused the disk error.
Assuming you still have some space left on the Powerbook's internal drive, are you able to make an internal copy of one of these "troublesome" files using just the Powerbook in isolation? If not, and where you cannot, you have a corrupted file. Corrupted by a disk error. Yes, you may be able to access them just fine, and they may actually play within FCP, but they are incomplete in some way; they are missing some bytes, Kbytes, or Mbytes. If you find this to be the case, you might consider that you need to re-capture.
If they can be copied internally, there is probably something else going on here. If they can be copied internally, you should be able to copy them to some external media.

  • HP OfficeJet J4680 All-in-One getting Copy error message when copying from front panel.

I get this message when I try to copy from the front panel:  Incorrect paper size. Load different media or change copy paper size settings.  It does not matter what I am trying to copy.  I have checked the paper size and media and they are set on what I want  -- Letter size and plain paper.  It started after I cleared a paper jam from the back of the copier.  Hope someone can help me.  Thanks Klb

I am also having the exact same problem. I tried resetting it back to default settings (power on, unplug power cord, hold the # and 3 buttons while plugging back up). However, this has not helped. So far the only solution I saw is to upgrade to another printer, but copying seems to be such a simple function for this problem to be so hard so solve. Unfortunately, I've seen no other answers, so upgrading may be my only option even though I have no other problems :-(

  • Text goes wonky when trying to copy from PDF

    Hi all,
I'm having a problem when trying to copy text from a PDF which is distilled from a PostScript file. When i paste it into anywhere this is just all rubbish and symbols.
I'm running distiller 5.0.5 and PPD 3011.104. The font's should be TrueType however they just up as custom encoded Type 1 fonts with a prefix "File" in front of the name. e.g. FileSwis721BT
Does any one have any idea's.
(please note this is not to do with restriced copying access in distiller, the options are all unticked!)
    Thanks in advance!

First, this is the wrong forum for this discussion...
Second, Distiller 5.0.5 is almost 10 years old at this time and Adobe no longer supports it.
Third, it sounds like your Postscript may/does have problems based on the font issues. But w/o seeing the PS, we can only guess.

  • Getting "resource busy" when trying to copy from an external USB drive

Hi, I have an external (Seagate FreeAgent Desk 1.5TB) USB drive attached to my MacBook Pro (2009) running 10.6. I am trying to copy the files back to my laptop. However, when I copy them in the Finder, I get a message saying that some of the files are "in use". So I even tried copying using Terminal, and often I get this kind of message:

After this happens, when I do "ls /Volumes/MyDriveName" I get zero results, nothing. I cannot unmount or eject the USB drive. I have to physically kill power to it, and then plug it back in. Then my MBP recognizes it again, and I can work with it for a short time before I hit this problem again. Copying some files works, but mostly they do not. I hope I have not lost these files.
I ran Disk Utility, and it can't do anything with this drive... it keeps saying it cannot unmount it.
Oddly, I can "ls" every file in every directory on this drive after I reconnect it (i.e. until the problem happens). So it seems like my data is sort of there, at least the directory is.
Is there something more robust than Disk Utility that I can try? Any idea why I cannot eject the disk? And especially, what this "Resource busy" and "in use" message is about? This is coming straight after a reboot, and it only happens for SOME files, so it's not likely to be an obvious usage by some open app.

Hmm, check out this program http://www.hamsoftengineering.com/products/wkm/wkm.html ... it might lead to some more clues. It seems like as soon as you plug it in, the system latches onto it. I'm guessing because it's an iMovie file, which OS X scans for, so all applications have the ability to grab that media that it's messing things up.
Suggestions...copy those files, and rename them.
Check out the app above to see what's holding onto the files.
Check me out over at www.itarsenal.com for some remote control support on the house if you still need help.
