Error -36 with external harddrive

As of very recently (perhaps since the installation of SuperDrive Firmware 3.0) I'm experiencing a weird problem using my FAT32 external drives (pendrive and WD external harddrive): I get -36 errors when trying to write a folder containing files to the drives. It will create the folder in the destination drive, but then give me the -36 error and stop copying the files into the folder.
I never had problems with my FAT32 drives before.
So then I thought it must have been connected to the fact that I created the specific folder and the Wordfiles in them on a PC at uni, so that perhaps it was a compatibility issue of PC-created folders/files. The funny thing is that some folders with files unrelated to a PC copy just fine. Especially the folder that I created on a PC and copied to my Mac via a pendrive (which, a couple of weeks ago, worked just fine), does now not copy to a pendrive.
Then I had the same problem with copying a folder full of newly created (on a Mac) mp3s; to and from the pendrive would give a -36 error. Since I have recently installed Dropbox on my computer, I uninstalled it (just a gut feeling, not based on any knowledge), did a clean restart and then the folder with mp3s copied fine to and from my FAT pendrive. But the problem with the specific folder full of PC-created wordfiles continued!
I'm just very confused... does anyone have the same experience and perhaps some tips?
My MacBook is only 4 months old and running 10.6.2. I recently installed the SuperDrive Firmware 3.0 update.

there are a lot of posts about this on the forum. do a search. in a nutshell there is a bug in snow leopard Finder when dealing with FAT formatted drives. apple has promised to fix it in the next update. the bug happens when you copy a folder from a FAT formatted drive to an HFS+ formatted one and then try to copy it back later.
FAT FS doesn't support resource forks and they are kept as separate ._ files. when you copy stuff to an HFS+ formatted drive the resource forks supposed to be merged with the original but sometimes this does not happen. then when you try to copy something back the split resource fork for the hidden .DS_Store file in the folder you are trying to copy causes the error you are seeing. a workaround is to run the unix dot_clean command to reabsorb all resource forks into main files prior to copying stuff back to a FAT drive. the syntax is very simple. to do it for everything in your home directory run this in terminal
dot_clean -m ~
then you can copy anything from your home directory to a FAT drive without issues.
to do it to any other folder you do
dot_clean -m /path/to/folder
prior to copying.

  • E3000 shows "USB is not supported" error with External Harddrive

I have the E3000 router and recently purchased a USB WD (Western Digital) 2TB External Harddrive.  I plug the Harddrive into the router, open the router homepage (http://192.168.1.1/) then click on Storage > Disk and I get a "The attached USB is not supported" error - any suggestions on how to fix this?
    Thanks for any help!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Likely Final Update:  WD Support sent me a link to download / install SmartWare and solve the problem I was having with the SmartWare software ("Drive Settings" was greyed out).  Once I got SmartWare back up and running I was able to change the "Drive Settings" within SmartWare.  As the last update suggested, I modified the sleep timer settings and security (password settings) and tested to get the following results:
Sleep Timer on / Password protection on:  E3000 shows "USB not supported"
Sleep Timer off / Password protection on:  E3000 shows "USB not supported"
Sleep Timer on / Password protection off:  WD Hard Drive seen and seems to function properly when connected to E3000
Sleep Timer off / Password protection off:  WD Hard Drive seen and seems to function properly when connected to E3000
So (other than maybe some inital problems with the WD SmartWare) it appears the "USB is not supported" error is due to the Password protection being turned on for the External Hard Drive.  This point should be highlighted in the Western Hard Drive materials but I don't see it anywhere on the box or in the manual (maybe its fine print in the manual).  Cisco and / or Western Digital are screwing us by not allowing password protection (or making this point known) on at this least model of Hard Drive!
Thanks again to everyone that helped with troubleshooting this!

Wow, that seems very odd to me!
Have you tried resetting the BIOS to defaults? See if that works.
If not, try updating the BIOS.

  • Aperture 2 with external harddrive

Can I store all my photos on an external harddrive all the while viewing and editing them, straight from my ext hd without ever actually having then on my computers hd?

    Joey-
I strongly recommend that every DSLR photog with adequate computer hardware first spend $33 and work through the tutorial CD Apple Pro Training Series: Aperture 1.5 (Apple Pro Training) by Orlando Luna and Ben Long (Paperback - Oct 18, 2006). Have the CD and a MacIntel with 2 GB or preferably more of RAM prior to ordering the Aperture trial so you don't waste time of the 30 day trial. Note that the value is in the tutorial, not in using the book as a manual.
IMO a cursory examination of Aperture usually turns out to be mostly a waste of time, or leads to bad workflow habits or folks simply do not get it. Carefully working the tutorial is by far the best way to learn this new killer app category.
Aperture version 2.0.1 is now out, and a new version of the Luna/Long tutorial is available for preorder: Apple Pro Training Series: Aperture 2 (Apple Pro Training Series) by Ben Long, Richard Harrington, and Orlando Luna (Paperback - May 8, 2008). I have not reviewed the v2 tutorial.
    Good luck!

  • 'Secure Empty Trash' quits unexpectedly with external harddrive

I am running mavericks on a MacBook Pro, and removing old back-ups from an external harddrive, in order to make room for newer, time-machine backups.
After deleting an old back up, I am choosing to 'Secure Empty Trash', to clear out that space.
It started out with 650K plus items to delete and after a few days now, I'm down to 180K items.
But the system keeps quitting, and won't allow it to finish these final items.
I do get the question, "some items are locked, do you want to delete them" and I've tried choosing both yes, and no, and each time the process never gets started, just quits.
I'd like to get this drive cleared for more space.
Any suggestions on how to make it continue?
    Thank you,

This was very helpful, thank you.  With holding down the option key, I was able to get very far.
Now it's stuck again at 59K items left to delete.  Holding down the option key is not making a difference.
The directions for working under the terminal system aren't very clear to understand.
    Any other suggestions?
    thank you so much.

  • Maintain two libraries with external harddrive

I just got a netbook for christmas and an external harddrive to backup my itunes and transfer it back and forth between the netbook and the home computer. I copied all of my itunes music via the method suggested in tech support to copy my files to my harddrive from my home computer. That went fine, but now I've connected my harddrive to my netbook and it seems my only option is to wipe out my netbook's library and put in the one from the home computer. Is there any way I can keep my netbook library and put my home computer files on my netbook? If not, do I have to wipeout my libraries everytime i add a new song?

I'm not sure of what Neil is suggesting, but he usually has good advice.
I would do things a different way, though. I would put the home PC's ITL file on the exHD.
Then you could shift-start itunes to either choose the home PC library file, or the netbook's library file.
    iTunes Library.ITL
That is the database that holds all the paths to the music files, ratings, playlists, etc.
To shift-start itunes, press *AND HOLD* the shift button while starting itunes. When prompted, browse to the ITL file for the library you want to use.

Does anyone have any ideas that could help us? I am having her download skype to see if thats more successful but this is going to be our primary mode of contact for the next year and I am REALLY worried. We are both using external iSights and we tried audio with and without them plugged in.
Everytime either of us tries anything it gets the the stage where it says "connecting" then gives the error message.
Any help would be really appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Stephen Miller

    Hi,
Hotels are notoriously difficult for iChat because of the way
    1) the ports are not always open
    2) the number of people sharing the connection.
For Mail you probably have POP and SMTP server set for one location and the hotel's ISP is not letting you go to those though their server. Web Mail may be the only way around this.
Ask the hotel if they have the ports open for iChat.
You may not be able to do much about the Bandwidth/user issue.
I take it you have done the Quicktime setting as you have posted before.

  • Error message with External HDD (PX1394E-3G50)

I have an external hard drive of 500 GB, Code: PX1394E-3G50.
I have been working perfectly until now that I get an error in Windows XP that says "has exceeded the capacity of the port hub", although the blue light turns on the hard drive and leaves the error to put the cable USB disk drive to the computer. I have tried in different USB ports and passes well, I tested these USB ports with other devices and whether they work, ports USB are 2.0 and Windows XP SP3.

Hm, I would recommend you to send the drive to an authorized service provider because this sounds like some hardware related problem. Could be, that the controller in the external harddisk has some malfunction.
If you need to find an ASP then go here -> http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/ and goto -> Support & Downloads -> Support Website -> Repairs & Servicing -> Find an authorized service provider

  • Problem with external harddrive and disk utility

I have just about ran out of room on my iMac G3 so I went to walmart and bought a FreeAgent 320 GB external hard drive. On the bottom it says its compatible with my iMac G3 you just have to format it using disk utility.
So I open up disk utility and I see my hard drive. I click on it and then go to erase so I can format it to work on my mac. However everything on the erase page of disk utility is greyed out and and I can't click on anything.
    What do I do? Thanks.

I recall that the old imacs could not use a HD over 130G or so unless they are partitioned. So you may need to make three partitions first with your disk utilities. It should format it at the same time.

I am on an iMac 24" late 2007. The external drive is a Hitachi (HGST) Touro 1TB (other drives are fine and never had a problem not even before the supplemental update). Disk utility finds no problems with the HD (had volume repaired never the less).
Is this just my iMac or are others here also still confronted with hd sleep problems after the supplemental update?
    Thanks for your input.

I'm not having those same problems, but my USB3 external drives attached via a USB3 hub still are ejected improperly when the machine goes to sleep.  Also, I've had aliases on the desktop disappear for no reason.  I regret updating to 10.8.5 due to all the weird problems, and the supplemental update fixed a few things but it's still buggy...  Fortunately, no data corruption from this.  I keep my fingers crossed.
Since desktop sales represent 15% of Apple's revenues (and dropping), it's just a matter of time before they dump desktops all together. I see no reason why Apple would care if the desktop OS is buggy.

  • Need external harddrive advice..

.. I need advice for a good external harddrive. One with firewire 800 would be a plus, 160-250gb is what i am after. I've had bad luck with external harddrives in the past so i'm hoping someone can reccommend somethign that will last and hold up. Lacie? Western Digital? I dont know which way to go..

I have used WD MyBook Pro (USB 2.0, FW 400 and 800 connectivity) 500 GB drives ..a pair for one year with zero problems and I just got a second pair. Set up was very easy.
I also use OWC (Other World Computing) 160 GB portable external (powered off the FW port). I use this to back up my internal drive of my C2D without difficulty. Also very easy to use, and thus far robust and fast! It does not run very often and using SuperDuper, the drive is bootable in case my internal drive fails...but not has fast as the internal but fast enough for crises mode.
    Good luck.

  • Trying to save files on "PC" side of Mac, using a FreeAgent external harddrive.  I get the error message E:/not accessible or something similar.  Can I not use an external harddrive, if not, what is the best way to back up PC side of a Mac

Trying to save files on "PC" side of Mac, using a FreeAgent external harddrive.  I get the error message E:/not accessible  access denied.  Can I not use an external harddrive, if not, what is the best way to back up PC side of a Mac

Apple has really crappy NTFS read-only that does not always work. And it is probably a licensing issue.
Paragon Software is constantly being updated and supported with their NTFS for Mac OS X - they also have an HFS+ driver for Windows that works - Apple's HFS+ read-only driver for Boot Camp / Windows does not.
I keep seeing problems and lack of support for MacFUSE, that could change.

  • Trying to backup my MacBook Pro onto my External Harddrive, error

I am trying to backup my Macbook Pro onto my External harddrive (the same one I always do), and for some reason all of the sudden I get the error message that says that the backup disk is not available. When I click on the time machine icon at the top it just says that the latest back up is just delayed. What should I do?

Your query strongly suggests that you are using thiis particular HHD for Time Machine backups.  It seems that your MBP simply is not recognizing the HDD.
When connected it should appear on you desktop.
If it does not, I would connect another HDD to determine if there is an issue with the Time Machine drive.  If another drive is recognized then use the same USB cord with the Time Machine drive.  If still no success, make an appointment with the Apple Store Genius bar and bring the drive along with your MBP.
    Ciao.

  • I get an input/output error when i try to restore a functioning backup from my external harddrive to my new internal harddrive through disk utility?

my hardrive Had a smart status warning so i made a backup of it on my external harddrive through disk utility. i checked to make sure that the backup was working and i had no problems with it. i then bought a new internal harddrive and swaped it out but when i was in recovery mode to try to restore my new hardrive i kept getting an error message saying restore error, input/output error

The big dilemma with a new Internal drive is separating Drive operation from 'inside the MacBook' operation. If you had an External Enclosure, you could do all the work (including booting up from the new drive) using the External enclosure.
Then if a know-good drive develops problems only when moved inside the MacBook, it is time to try a replacement cable.

  • My mac won't read my external harddrive's videos that I took with my Nikon.  Half the videos won't play, and those are .avi files.  WHY won't they play anymore and how can i retrieve them?

My mac won't read my external harddrive's videos that I took with my Nikon.  Half the videos won't play, and those are .avi files.  WHY won't they play anymore and how can i retrieve them?

What exactly is your problem? Is it, (a) your Mac doesn't read your external disk, or, (b) you can't retrieve your videos, or, (c) you can't play them, or, (d) you were able to play them at one point, but not any more.
What version of Mac OS X are you using, what app are you trying to play your videos with, what happens when you do, and what error messages, if any, do you get?
