Error 37- a bad filename or volume name was encountered

I'm getting this message when trying to few a video clip taken by my camera. The video clip is in My Pictures. The pictures are showing up correctly, and the video clip shows up as "Quick Time Movie". When I click on it to view I get this message. I have deleted the pictue file and downloaded it again. and I have also deleted Quick Time and reloaded it. But, I'm still getting the same message.
Any suggestions???

I noticed a few days ago that (at least on my box) Quicktime seems to have "issues" with >31 characters anywhere in the file path.
Is it possible that you have some folder along the way to your movie that has more than 31 charaters?
Shorten if necessary and see if that works.

I get a PAGEFAULT_IN_NONPAGEDAREA blue screen after I encounter multiple Error 37: a bad filename or volume was encountered.
Anyone encounter this issue and how to you send info to apple for them to fix their buggy code?
Their support of code which will run bug-free on vista seems to be lacking (I understand there are two parties to this marriage).
    Help anyone?

  • "A Bad Filename or volume name encountered" ?!!!

I searched but I didnt find an answer for this problem. I get the message "Bad Filename or volume name encountered" when I try to play a video file with Quicktime. When I try to add it to my playlist on iTunes it doesnt add it. All of this happened after I converted the file to a Quicktime format (.mov). Also I tried to convert it to iPod video format (.mp4) and the same thing happened. I actually converted some other files to those two formats and they worked. I changed the video size and frame rate and the audio bit rate , sample rate, channel around to match the iPod requirements but it still didnt work. Does anyone know what I should do?!
      Windows XP

actuially providing as much detail is best to get an answer. Like what are you missing? Where did you get this video from? what did you use to convert the video? Did you follow the instrucitons to convert the video to a .mov format and then to a .mp4 format? You see as much information is best to get an educated answer. Since your new here you didnt know that so your ok. And you did something MANY people dont seem to do and thats actually search b4 you posted.

  • Quicktime Error -37, bad filename or volume name error

This appears to be bug in Quicktime for windows -- if the filename of a .mov is longer than ~60 characters, quicktime throws this error and exits. Making the filename shorter and it works. Completely different name that's long -- breaks... Playing the same file on OS X works fine.
Do the developers know of this issue?
    Matt

Do the videos play in iTunes? If they do not then your videos may need to be converted. You can use iTunes to convert them or you can use a 3rd party converter like....

    BUMP
Yes, I just get that message. I don't see how I could investigate this problem.
I didn't mention that this happened when I was consolidating my library, not copying files to another computer.
In other words, I'm using a "normal" itunes procedure, itunes won't complete it, and won't tell me exactly why or how to figure out how to fix it...
Is there at least some easy way to tell which files were successfully copied to my itunes music folder so I can work on moving the uncopied files?
    Can anybody help me?

  • The password for the account "account name" was not changed. Your system administrator may not allow you to change your password or there was some other problem with your password. Contact your system administrator for help.

I have a user who's Active Directory password is going to expire. I had her reset her password by going to apple > system prefs > user > and clicking change password. She received the error "The password for the account "account name" was not changed. Your system administrator may not allow you to change your password or there was some other problem with your password. Contact your system administrator for help."
I had her change her password via the kpasswd command in terminal and that changed her password on the server sucessfully however the laptop has FileVault on it. Filevault is not recognizing the new password just the old password.
I have deleted the keychain which didn't resolve and now I am going to decrypt and reencrypt the drive. I'm hoping this is an isolated issue I have over 25 laptops configured like this.

I "think" the trick was unbinding and rebinding the computer account.
After unencrypting and trying to reencrypt Filevault would still not take the new password.
Rebooted the prompt to update the keychain appeared. Updated the keychain. Filevault would still not take the new password.
Unbinded and rebinded the computer account. It worked and let me add the user to filevault.

  • Invalid Filename or Volume Error on Slideshow Export

I have a slideshow in Aperture that is giving me an error message when I try to Export the Slideshow.  The message says, "Unable to Export Slideshow:  An invalid filename or voume was encountered."  What does this mean, and how do I fix it?
The slideshow is 952 slides with music.  It runs fine in Aperture, but crashes when I try to Export.
I am running the latest version of Aperture 3.4.3 and the latest Mountain Lion 10.8.2.
    What can I do?

      That certainly explains it!
You should not put a slash into any filename you want to export to your disk. Avoid any characters that may have a special meaning in a pathname.

  • Filename or Document name restrictions

I am working with a customer that uses strange names for their files and documents. They name them like: !(%$#@^&P_6* (we call them cussing file names)
Anyway, I found release notes for 9.0.3 that says many of these characters can not be used. However, I have not been able to find any restrictions to filenames or document names in 10.1.4. They are trying to search for these in Oracle Search as well.
Are those restrictions no long valid? Can you name file like this?
    Thanks

I have experienced a problem. I did a big import of documents from a file system server to portal using api. Portal version was 10.1.2. and the problem that we got, was because of the big names of documents, when a link from an item was clicked, portal showed an error. Then we opened a sr in metalink and applied a patch. The problem solved. I had another problem with charset, our portal was configured to use UTF8 and there were "Microsoft Word documents" that was done using charset=windows-1252. When we tried to search these documents (using search portlet), we did not have success because of the charset, the solution was edit these documents and save then using UTF8.

  • Start Up Manager not showing Volume names?

I have a G4 DA 800 with 10.5.8 on the main IDE and two partitions , one for OS 9 and one for 10.3.9 Volumes on a FW 400 Drive.
Everything runs pretty well except when I've been using Start Up Manager (Option Boot) the names of the Volumes are not there. There's only an X or the Finder for OS 9 and for the Volume names there is only a small cursor line.
Is there a way to get the Volume names to appear again in Start Up Manager?
    Thank you!
    -Mike

    Hi, Mike -
In Startup Manager the volume names are read before any OS is loaded, of course, so the cause should not be OS-specific.
Try resetting the PRAM on the affected machine.
Do the proper names appear on the desktop when the machine is booted to OS 9?
If the names are longer than 31 characters, then they could be misread. OSX has a software solution to allow longer filenames, but OS 9 and the machine's hardware modes do not. There might also be an issue with non-text characters (other than a space, comma, or period) interfereing.
If all else is good, try renaming the volumes while the machine is booted to OS 9 - there may be a difference in OS 9 vs. OSX regarding how the names are stored, hence accessed by the machine while in hardware mode.

  • Slideshow can not be export: An invalid file or volume name has been detected.

How can I find this file after following error?
    slideshow can not be export
An invalid file or volume name has been detected.
I am not able to export my slideshow at all

  • Beware of spaces in volume names

Many, many install scripts have failed during my upgrade due to having a volume name with a space in it. If you have any non unix compatible characters in your volume name be sure to rename the volume before upgrading.

    Hi David,
One method for handling spaces is to simply remove their role as a field separator. I like to restore the field separator after I'm through with the alteration, although that's not required for this simple example. Here's one way of doing what you want:
    <PRE>#!/bin/sh
    DIRS='Folder 1
    Folder 2'
    echo $DIRS; echo
    OLDIFS="$IFS"
    IFS=$'\n'
    for dir in $DIRS
    do
    IFS="$OLDIFS"
    echo "Here is a directory"
    echo $dir
    done</PRE>
Since the DIRS variable now contains a newline, I've added an additional echo statement to verify that two passes through the loop were in fact occurring. Of course you don't have to use a newline as a field separator. Any character that is not allowed in a filename will suffice.
I apologize for the late reply; I hope you're still listening. I just learned of this discussion. The discussion now called "UNIX" used to be named "Command Line". I didn't realize until this week that Apple had created a second one.
