Time Machine may have lost track of where your backups are.  Try just re-selecting your backups in the Time Machine preferences window.
If that doesn't help, the preferences file (where that and other info are kept) may be damaged.  Try a "full reset" per #A4 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting
If still no help, the backups may be damaged.  Try to Repair them, per #A5 in the same link.

I keep getting this error when trying to backup time capsule with time machine. The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data-1/Dan’s iMac.sparsebundle” is already in use.

Make sure that no other Macs are backing up at the time.
Pull the power cable from the back of the Time Capsule
    Count to ten
Plug the power cable back into the back of the Tme Capsule
Wait a few minutes, then try a backup again.

  • Error restoring thunderbolt ssd from time capsule

I have a thunderbold sad that is bootable.  This drive is backed up to my time capsule.  I boot off the sad holding down the command-r keys.  I select the time capsule restore option.  I select a valid backup and restore to the ssd. Before I can get to 8% restored the restore hangs ant the time remaining starts increasing then errors out with unable to write files.  From everything I have read this should not be a problem.  Many others have done the same.  The ssd is my work drive and time capsule is my backup.  Can anybody help?

Same problem here, but I am restoring 211.73 GB. It has been going for about 36 hours and claims that it has 52 hours to go. Egad.
I've got the computer connected to the TC via ethernet and the restore is going into a USB 2.0-connected external drive, so the bottleneck should not be in the capacity of those connections. Nothing very CPU intensive is happening on the machine.
Is there some faster way to do this? I'd happily plug a USB drive right into the TC and copy the data off that way – is there some way to do that?

  • "An unexpected error has occurred" - setting up Time Capsule - now happening on 2nd TC

    Hi!
I'm sorry if this has been asked a thousand times - I'm brand new to owning an iMac and a TC.
I tried to set my first TC up last week, got through to where it said, "Waiting for AirPort Time Capsule" and every time I would get "An Unexpected Error Has Occured, Please Try Again." Reset it 5 times, did everything again - same response. Called Apple Care, they had me do it another three times, got the same thing. Told me to drive the 50 miles one way to go to the Apple Store to return it. I did that tonight...
Now I have a new TC, and I was assured that it wouldn't happen again. Here I am....with the same error message at the same point in the setup.
I can connect to the internet through the TC on the brand new network I created (every time) - however, my brand new iMac will never configure the TC. I have the TC directly connected from my AT&T Pace Router to the TC by ethernet cable, and the globle on the AirPort Utility is the only thing on there, with the green light for the Internet - it says connected - all of that good stuff. At the bottom, it says, "No configured AirPort base stations have been found..."
I've updated everything I can on my iMac and through the AirPort Utility, so everything is up to date.
Anyone have any clues before I call Apple Care....again and they tell me that this has never happened before? (ugh)
    Thanks!

Sorry you have had such a bad first impression..
Is the ipv6 turned on? This was an after thought as they seem to have released both firmware and utility and woken up after the event to the fact they actually needed ipv6 on to manage it.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4597
Otherwise I don't see what you are using to connect to the TC from the iMac.. is it wired or wireless??
Can I suggest you do the setup again.
This time use ethernet to the TC.. in full isolation from the network. And do the setup manually.
You may need to factory reset again.. sorry about that .. and start over.. only the Mac plugged into the TC.. nothing else.
You may need further help just post where you get up to and we can sort out what is happening from there.
This often works easier at the start from the airport utility in iphone or ipad if you have one.

  • HELP- what does this mean- time machine error- backup disk image "/Volumes/time Capsule/ cheryl lynott's MacBook.sparsebundle" is already in use?

Often, this error can be corrected by pulling the power on the Time Capsule, waiting a few minutes, and powering the Time Capsule back up.

  • Communication error with printer hooked to time capsule

I have a Macbook using 10.5.8 and a 500 gig Time Capsule with an Epson cx 3200 printer plugged into it and when I try to print, I get a 'Communication Error". What am I doing wrong?

    Welcome to the discussion area!
If your Epson is compatible (not all devices will work at the USB port of the Time Capsule), the Apple Printer Troubleshooting Guide will provide some assistance.
Keep in mind that only the printing function is supported if your device is compatible. Fax, Scan, Copy, Maintenance, etc., are not supported, so you will need to connect the device directly to your computer if you need these functions.

  • I get this error when I select the time capsule volume and enter the password in time machine:

Keychain error -25308 occurred while creating a System Keychain entry for the username “Daniel Herd” and URL “afp://Daniel%[email protected]/Data”.
    What's it mean?

Thanks for your help, but I still get the same error.  It doesn't make sense to me that I can login to the drive in the finder, but trying to login to it in time machine I get the error.  Is it a problem with time machine or keychain?  I'm thinking that I didn't have a problem on my other mac, that it is the keychain on this mac, but the disk permission repair should have fixed that, right?

  • Strange Time Capsule Error

    Hello,
I woke up this morning, logged into my Mac and got a strange error about sparseerror from my time capsule. I clicked ok and tried to run time machine again. Then I got the following error
I've restarted the time capsule and get this every time Time Machine tries to connect.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this error? I made no changes on my end before this error came up.
    Thanks,
    Tim

About TM "Backup Drive is Full"
Alert TM only deletes older files if they have been deleted from the source and when TM needs space on the backup drive for a new incremental backup. Time Machine "thins" it's backups; hourly backups over 24 hours old, except the first of the day; those "daily" backups over 30 days old, except the first of the week. The weeklies are kept as long as there's room.
So, how long a backup file remains depends on how long it was on your Mac before being deleted, assuming you do at least one backup per day. If it was there for at least 24 hours, it will be kept for at least a month. If it was there for at least a week, it will be kept as long as there's room.
Note, that on a Time Capsule the sparsebundle grows in size as needed, but doesn't shrink. Thus, from the user's view of the TC it appears that no space has been freed, although there may be space in the sparsebundle.
Once TM has found it cannot free up enough space for a new backup it reports the disk is full. You can either erase the backup drive and start your backups anew or replace the drive with a larger drive.
So in your case you can try using the Time Machine application to remove older backups or you can use Airport Utility to erase the Time Capsule's drive and begin again.
But whatever you do DO NOT just delete files from the backup with the Finder. This will screw up the backup index leading to perhaps many hours for Time Machine to re-index. Only use the Time Machine application to delete items from a Time Machine backup.

  • HT3275 Time Capsule backup error

I am getting an error while backing up with Time Capsule.
The message: "The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/XXXXXXXX’s MacBook Pro.sparsebundle” is already in use."
    What does it mean?

It means you are more than likely running Mountain Lion (or Lion).
And your Networking has now reached the limits of ML.. ie wet string.
Reboot the whole network.. start in order modem.. tc.. clients. With 2min gap between.

  • Time Capsule will not recognize physical Ethernet connection

I recently purchased a Third Generation 2TB Time Capsule (MC343LL/A). Last night, I attempted to utilize the Time Capsule's internal Base Station to create a new wireless network for home usage via both AirPort Utility on my MacBook, and upon failure, additionally with the AirPort Utility app on my iPhone 4 . After using AirPort Utility to initialize the Time Capsule's primary settings, I was then met with an error upon restart of the Time Capsule, stating "Problem 1 of 1: Ethernet Unplugged". Enter the issue, as the Ethernet cable is in fact physically connected to the WAN port on the back of the Time Capsule. Subsequently, this results in the infamous flashing yellow status LED on the unit, and no network creation. Now, if I take that exact Ethernet cable end and plug it into my AirPort Express' (M9470LL/A and MB321LL/A) they recognize it. An older D-Link wireless router that I have kicking around also recognizes said Ethernet cable and connection, as well as both of my MacBooks (MB402*/B), and my Apple TV (Second Generation). I have attempted to both hard reset and soft reset the Time Capsule a myriad of times, and powered my cable modem on and off an equal number of times. All to no avail. And yes, I have tested all of the above with a plethora of different physical cables. Any and all ideas or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

In your normal setup.. is the TC connected via a wall ethernet port directly back to the modem? Have you plugged the TC directly into the modem with a short 1M patch cable?
We do see occasional instances of gigabit not exchanging auto speed info correctly with fast ethernet. Somewhere you need to be able to lock the speed at one end.. so the auto speed is removed.
That is not possible in the TC.. perhaps the modem offers some way to lock the speed.
Putting a switch inbetween is often the way to fix the problem.. which is exactly what you are doing with the dlink router.. they correctly auto-negotiate the speed. Can you please check if the dlink is 10/100 which speed it linked at. If it linked at 10mbit I would say there could be issues with the WAN port of the TC.

  • Time Capsule can't be found!

I successfully connected my time capsule to my existing network. I managed to even backup my system. Onthe second backup run, it failed. An error message stated that the time capsule was disconnected. It was plugged into the wall and a solid green light indicating that it is working properly was shown. When I ran Time machine to try to connect back to the time capsule, there was no success. I even tried to restart my macbook air. Not sure where to go from here. How do I get the time capsule to reappear and connect to it??
    Thanks
Nevermind..... I just restarted the time capsule and it worked

I can't help but think the settings you are updating to are in error. Whenever I need to update (e.g. to turn on/off the wireless network) it takes less than a minute to restore. Are you trying to Join/extend a network? If so, make sure the settings are correct from the existing network.

  • Time Capsule "can't be found" as a hard disk in Snow Leopard

I've had a Time Capsule for a year and a half. No problems until I installed Snow Leopard.
Time Machine seems to work fine, my backups proceed regularly, but if I try to actually mount the hard disk and upload or download files from the drive, I can't. The path "My Computer/Network/Time Capsule" shows up in a Finder window, but when I click on the icon for the Time Capsule drive, it says "The alias 'My Time Capsule' can't be opened because the original item can't be found." I can "Delete Alias", "Fix Alias..." or "OK".
Clicking on Fix Alias leads to the file selector dialog box. If I select the drive, it claims that it is already connected. So the only available option in the dialog box is "cancel".
Clicking on Delete Alias gives the error message "The item 'My Time Capsule' can't be moved to the Trash because it can't be deleted."
Clicking on OK, naturally, accomplishes nothing.
I tried going to Disk Utility and repairing disk permissions and rebooting. Nada.
I tried connecting directly to the Time Capsule via ethernet. Didn't make a difference.
    Help!!!

I'm having the same problem. Internet connection is fine; backups work correctly. But I get a message telling me there's an update I should install for Time Capsule, and when I click to install it, it tells me it can't find the hard drive.
I also can't print, although my printer driver is installed and the image of the printer appears. My printer is connected to the Time Capsule.
