Error -8: iChat worked, then stopped...

After convincing a friend of mine that Mac's were the way forward and were infinitely easier to use than Windows, he bought a brand new iMac.
We tried out iChat's audio, video and screen sharing features and they worked out the box. Great.
My friend tried to use iChat to video and audio chat to his sister who also uses a Mac on Tiger. iChat video and audio chat wouldn't work. Simply wouldn't connect. I tried today to video chat with him again today and I get the error below repeatedly.
This is not a router issue as nothing has changed with his internet setup. He can even use his friend's next door unencrypted wireless network and he STILL gets the error. I've ran through his Mac firewall settings (on, off, specific), setup Quicktime streaming on a variety of settings. We've created a new user account, a new AIM account and still the error below...
What is the problem? I can't see how two internet connections have suddenly developed port issues.

He should change the System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming setting to 1.5Mbps and restart iChat to "see" the new speed.
iChat reads this speed on subsequent start ups.
On the first setting up of the Mac session if iChat is used the Quicktime setting is effectively circumvented and he has full internet streaming speed.
Later attempts are capped 0kb in Tiger and 384k in Leopard if the Quicktime setting is left at Automatic.

  • LaCie Big Disk 640GB  Worked then stopped

I know Raid isn't supported by AE(n), but the strange thing is it worked the first day, then I started copying stuff on it and it stopped working. Is it because it started to use both disks?
Is there a way to upgrade the Lacie firmware to disable the Raid?
    Any idea? Anyone?
    Micha

Have you restarted the Airport remotely by say, changing any settings in the AirPort Utility?
That causes my USB-attached drive to disconnect from the wireless network every time. To get it to reappear, I simply unplug & replug it into the USB connection after the AirPort restart is complete. Worth a try if you haven't done that yet...

  • Connection to Oracle XE via IIS/ASP app was working then stopped

I am prototyping an application for my new management here so that I can recommend they use Oracle XE.
The connection to the Oracle XE database appears to have stopped working, via an IIS/ASP application I wrote. I can still connect through ODBC using native MS Access to Oracle XE, when logged into XP, its just when I try to log in using the app via IIS I get the following error:
Unable to establish connection to database.
    Error information:
Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers (0x80040E4D)
[Oracle][ODBC][Ora]ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified
It was working for a while, like the whole first week. It might be related to the fact that that I finally rebooted, not sure.
I have tried many, many things. I made the IUSR account an admin on the box hoping that maybe it had just lost access to the local ODBC/TNSNAMES. Right now all the components are local to my development box, from the IIS server to the Oracle eXtended Edition database (XE, free). Like I said, it was working. I did have this same message I believe early on, which turned out due to the fact that my ODBC DSN was a local DSN, instead of a System DSN, which I overcame at that time. But it just started happening again, possibly after a reboot.
I also tried switching to a local MS Access database, and I got a similar message. I moved the Access db to c: root, and it appears to work, so it appears to be a file/directory access issue.
But I'm not sure how to resolve it because I would much prefer to use the Oracle database.
    Thoughts?

As far as the connect string goes, I'm not sure exactly what to specify to you.
I am using the default connect string that comes when you install XE.
    I.e., "XE".
I suspect this might be a path issue for the virtual account that is used by IIS sessions. As you may know, when IIS runs, it logs the web user into the box using a dummy account, typically prefixed with the string "IUSR".
Although I made this account an admin to the box, I think I may need to add some of the Oracle Client directories to the path which is accessed by this IUSR account. The problem is, the acount, with its password, was set up by default and I don't know what its password is. But I think that I could try to adde Oracle's home path to the default system path, what do you think?
In other words, I don't think the XE connection libraries are available to this dummy IIS account. The strange thing is, it worked for a while, ostensibly till I rebooted.
Know also that I am not using the Oracle Client per se, although I did install it and try it with mixed results. I am just using the Oracle OLE DB ODBC that appeared when I installed the Oracle XE server itself.

  • POP account worked then stopped working

I used Mail to access my Compuserve account POP3-enabled mail account for months. Then it just stopped working. I changed no settings, did not alter the connection method to the internet, zip, nada.
I'm loathe to delete the account and start again because all of the messages will (supposedly) be deleted from my computer.
    Any suggestions?

    Well, now nothing works.
I have maintained a Compuserve account since 1984. I use the CSERVE software on my PCs and mail2web.com from remote locations (other people's computers). The account is active and works fine using those two methods.
After getting the G5 to do some editing, I setup MAIL to work with my new mac.com account and my existing Compuserve account. Everything hummed along just fine (I set the POP account to leave the messages on the server so i could access them from all my computers) until one day the POP account stopped retreiving the Compuserve address's messages.
That's what started this thread. The MAIL application no longer downloaded messages from CSERVE. Because Compuserve (now a member of the AOL family) stopped allowing the use of their SMTP server for uploaded (sent) messages, I simply used the mac.com account for outbound messages sent from my G5. Therefore, it the CSERVE SMTP server was never a part of this configuration.
In an effort to obtain more info, I logged onto my .Mac Mail page. For some reason, initially I was denied access, so I reset my password. I believed that I used the same password as before. Now MAIL will not access ANY of the accounts. Account Doctor show three failures (mac.com account, compuserve.com account, SMTP access). Earlier this morning only the compuserve account failed. Now all three show red lights.
I can fully access the mac.com mail on the web, however the compuserve account fails (this is from the G5). I can access my compuserve account from my PC, both with their software and via two different browsers. I can access my mac.com account via web2mail.com from both computers. the accounts are active and accessible.
My MAIL app seems to be failing. Makes no sense, but that's where I'm at.

  • Auto-Brightness Issue. It randomly worked, then stop working all together.

    Auto-Brightness Issue.
It randomly worked before, now it's not giving off any brightness at all. Unfortunately it stopped coming on all together. I tried updating it Itunes and it comes back on but tried to restore my Ipod touch. After restoring it, it said "restore error -50" and the backlight STILL doesn't come on, not even a flicker. PLEASE HELP!!!

Okay I tried to restore using iTunes and a little screen came up stating: An error occured while restoring this iPod (-50). I don't know what that means. It still ask do I want to continue to restore, but always gives me that same message. To make matters even worse, there is no Apple store in my town. The nearest is 3 hours away.

  • Hp 2000-2b89wm usb ports stopped working and sound has started to work then stop working

My wife bought a Hp 2000-2b89wm notebook brand new alittle over a year ago. Has had a few minor issues but nothing major. About a month ago after it downloaded a bunch of updates the sound would work if you boot the computer but after about 10 minutes the sound would cut off. If you reboot the computer it will work again, but it is the same thing over and over. Today we found the all the usb port have stopped working. The system says they are there and working, but they will not find anything or work. Any ideas how to solve these problems?? She has alot of info. on the system so she really doesn't want to do a restore, and she cannot back everything up on a flash drive because the usb ports are not working. We would be thankful for any help on this issue!

    Hi pacman43,
I believe that your problem may be caused by a Windows update. At this time there is a Windows update the may be causing the sound to stop working on some computers. The update is KB2962407, and it is now an “Important” update. That means that it will be installed by Windows Update unless you hide it.
    1.  Follow the steps in this document are attempted: No Sound from Speakers (Windows 8)
    2. Try creating a new user account. The changes forced by the update may only affect one user. This HP document shows you how to create a new user under the “Creating a new account in Windows 8” section: Managing User Accounts and Logins (Windows 8)
If this did not resolve the issue, then follow this information from SuperMario1 for troubleshooting the update.
First, you can try the Hotfix in this Microsoft document, specifically to address KB2962407: Windows RT, Windows 8, and Windows Server 2012 update rollup: June 2014
If that doesn't help, then uninstalling the Windows Update, and then hiding it, is the only method of eliminating the issue if it caused by this update. Here is the procedure for uninstalling the update:
    1. Go into Control Panel, then click on “Programs and Features”.
    2. Click on “View Installed Updates”. Look for the update with the ID number KB2962407.
    3. Right-click on the update and select “Uninstall”. Restart the computer.
Next, here is the procedure for hiding the update:
    1. Go into Control Panel, then click on “Windows Updates”.
    2. Click on “Check for Updates”. When the process is completed, is should find important update(s) available. Clicking on the message will open a window where the important update(s) is.
    3. Right-click on the KB2962407 update and select “Hide Update”. This will prevent the update from being installed next time Windows Updates are being installed.
I hope this information helps, please let me know how it goes.
Good luck and have a great day!
I worked on behalf of HP.

  • Throw to Sony bluray theatre worked then stopped

When I got going with tablet, I could throw to my bluray theatre system BDV E380 and it worked no problem. Somewhere along the line however it stopped working - I can no longer see the hometheatre when adding device. No problem throwing to Bluetooth device, and I can even throw to an XMBC renderer on my Mac. Also tried the media remote app, but cannot register the tablet.
I've done factory resets on both the home theatre as well as the tablet, no luck.
    Where to start looking?

Well, the first thing would be to try sending something to your bluray theatre from another device, to see if the problem is related to the tablet or the BR system. Since the tablet can send to other devices it seems like there might be something with the BR system.

I can't open any pdf documents with Adobe Reader XI...get an error that "Adobe has stopped working" then it closes.  Is this an Adobe issue, Microsoft issue, or security issue?

Thank you!  That seemed to do the trick.  Don't think I'd ever have figured that one out!!

my I pad suddenly stopped working then i connect it to iTunes it make error 4014 can you help me please I pad 4

If the phone shows the "connect to iTunes" screen, the data on the phone is most likely lost.
Connecting in recovery mode is your only chance to use the phone again, besides getting it serviced by Apple.

  • I am having a problem opening pdf document.  I get error message: "Adobe Reader has stopped working"

I am having a problem opening pdf document.  I get error message: "Adobe Reader has stopped working" then I get Windows is looking on line for a solution, but then my document closes. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Adobe Reader XI, rebooted my computer but this did not help.  I get the same message. What to do?

Can you open Reader by itself?  If so, check if disabling Protected Mode improves the situation [Edit | Preferences | Security (Enhanced)].

  • Adobe Acrobat X Pro - Error Message : "Adobe Acrobat Has Stopped Working"

    I use Windows 7 - 64bit / CS6 Master Collection that has Adobe Acrobat x Pro.
When the computer is on for a little while, Acrobat would generate the error message that it has stopped working and then shuts down. Once that error message occurs, I cannot get Acrobat to stay open. It opens the PDF document, stays open for a few seconds then the error message occurs and it shuts down.
What helps for a short term is to restart the computer. This seems to temporarily remove the error until the computer is on for a while then the error returns.
This problem repeats. Product repair feature does not work. This has nothing to do with the license, I tried that fix and it made no differnce. I do not have this issue with other Adobe products included in the master collection.
It seems fruitless and frustrating to send a message to Adobe Support, the run around with pages and links is like smacking walls on every turn, it is obvious Adobe does not want people contacting their support. Service from Adobe for their products is poor.
I hope that someone here has the answer to the problem. Anyone?

    Ok, here is the update.
The link: http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/acrobat-failed-launch-30-days.html , leads to a webpage that says to download a fix ZIP file named: "Acrofix.ZIP". It contains the file "acrofix.exe".
I did use this "exe" file about 2 months ago and it did nothing to fix the issue. I used it again today, because the same issue of "Adobe Acorbat has stopped working", occurred again and again it did not work, the problem of "Adobe Acrobat stopped working" presists. Again the only work around, which is temporary, is to reboot the computer.
So far these do not work:
    Relicensing or Registering the Licence
    Acrofix.exe
Anyone else have an answer? - or am I the only one suffering this really annoying issue?

  • TS1539 How do we deal with Error 50 when downloading a movie rental then stopped with error 50 and when I try to resume the downld, it doesn't do it?

How do we deal with Error 50 when downloading a movie rental then stopped with error 50 and when I try to resume the downld, it doesn't do it?

Yeah this "fix" is bunk. The movie is downloading just fine, but the extra features is the one giving me this error code. It is NOT my firewall. If it was, then both files wouldn't download. Plus, I already have the firewall "issue" tacked down and fixed. Have had it fixed for months now. No, this is due to the "new" itunes version 11 software. The only conclusion to fix this issue is UPgrading from 11 back to 10.7 which is what I am going to do. This is completely ridiculous! Come on, Apple, get itunes working once and for all, and fire the people responsible for itunes 11, just like you did to the guy who was responsible for apple maps. Thankfully Google came back to the rescue with google maps app.

I'd first try downloading an installer from the Apple website using a different web browser:

If you use Firefox instead of IE for the download (or vice versa), do you get a working installer?

  • Exchange / ActiveSync - Works for a day or so, then stops

I've had my iPhone 3G since launch and have configured it to work with my Exchange 2003 server utilizing activesync at work. It will connect and sync fine for a day or so, however then it will start giving me a "cannot get mail" "cannot connect to server" error message. The phone has plenty of signal and can reach the net, the exchange box is online and functioning properly. If i delete and recreate the account on the iPhone it starts syncing properly again, however it's only a matter of 24-48 hours before i have to repeat this process...any suggestions?

Same here since beta. I'm an Exchange admin and we've been seeing this since the last 2 beta releases before iPhone OS 2.0. Running Exchange 2003 SP2. We set up ActiveSync from scratch, just for iPhone use. Windows mobile phones work without a hiccup on the same system. Problem happens with either the original iPhones or 3G. And it's totally random for different users. Works fine for a couple days, then stops. The best routine we found to get back up and running is: turn off 3G and wifi. Delete account settings on the iPhone. Re-enter Exchange account info and reboot the phone. This will usually re-sync everything. I'm leaving my phone in this non-3G, non wifi mode, and it seems the most stable. The following things seem to cause it to break for me: opening emails with large attachments, switching to wifi, or just wait long enough and it breaks. Once it's broke, I usually have to do the whole "delete account setting" routine to get it back. I tried reconfiguring our internet-facing front end to use ISA server as is required for Exchange 2007, with delegated kerberos authentication . When ISA server was in place, we had 2 out of 10 iPhones able to function. I had to switch back, because I was getting yelled at We have a line of people at my work asking when this will be fixed. And a bunch of admins running around and trying different settings on their phones. We can't make it an "officially supported" email device until this works.
