Can't copy large files to external hard disk. Can someone please help me!

What were you trying to do at the time.  Delete an alias?  Burn a CD?

Has podido hacer algo al respecto?

  • Finder sidebar error 8058 when try to delete

I have two old files in my finder sidebar that I can't delete . I am running in Lion. when I restart in 10.6.8 they are gone. but when I go back to Lion, they are still there and I cannot move them to trash. I get error code 8058 when I try to move to trash.  any help would be appreciated. i have tried holding the command button, and I cannot find any list in the library that says com.apple.finder.plist. thanks. they are just annoying me.

Not sure if the procedure is the same in Lion, but try it anyway - hold down the cmd key while dragging the icons to the Desktop (not the Trash)

  • How to resolve errors (-50 and -8058) when moving Time Machine backups to new disk?

I'm trying to move my Time Machine backups (about 600GB total) to a new external hard drive.  I started the process last night, but after an hour or so received two errors, each repeated multiple times:
"The operation couldn't be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -8058)."
"The operation couldn't be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50)."
I opted to cancel the file transfer.  I looked up the error codes but I'm still not sure what they mean.  I found an old support article about error code -50 (Mac OS X 10.1: "Error Code -50" Alert Appears When Copying Files From a Remote Disk) and an old support article about error code -8058 that doesn't appear to be entirely relevant to my issue (Mac OS X 10.4: Error -8058, unable to eject when trying to copy a disc in Finder).  I've also found a number of Support Community discussions, none of which are particularly helpful.
    Questions:
What do these two error codes mean?  Are the files that cause these errors somehow corrupt?
If I click "Okay" when the error dialog appears, are the files that are causing the errors transferred or are they omitted from the transfer?
If I transfer the files and click "Okay" when the errors appear, or if I use Terminal and cp -R as suggested in Mac OS X 10.1: "Error Code -50" Alert Appears When Copying Files From a Remote Disk, will I have trouble recovering files from the new backup disk?
Do I need to verify/repair permissions on the original Time Machine disk before attempting the transfer?
Is there some other method I should use (e.g. Terminal instead of Finder) to transfer the backups?
    Details:
    MacBook Air
    Mac OS 10.8.5
Both the old and new Time Machine disks are formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)

The two drives are handled as separate drives, even if they have the same name.
In essence, the old backups are from a drive that's no longer connected; see #E3 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.

  • Since the 10.9 update -8058 error when copying a folder or file from a windows network server to any other location, why? and how to fix?

I am experiencing a persistant error -8058 when attempting to copy a file or folder from any windows sharepoints to any other server location or to my desktop or locals. Am I the only one or are the others with the same issue since updating to 10.9?
I have tried the finder plist removal suggestion- unsuccessful

I am fairly certain that would not work for me as that is my usaul manner of mounting shares, smb:// or cif://. The enterprise servers do not automount so I commandK. Yesterday when I was troubleshooting 10.9 issues I had to have tech support unlock my account a dozen or more times. So I'm gonna give it a rest until I see an 10.9 update. In my case I don't think Mavericks is ready for enterprise/business use. I am 1 mac vs 350+ PCs.
    Thanks for you help!

  • Error code 8058

what does this code mean?  I'm trying to transfer files from my MacMini to my NAS and it keeps giving me this error.  I've tried to restart my computer hoping that there was a program running in the background preventing these files from moving, but even after restarting, it was still giving me that error.

    Hi The Gator:
    Welcome to discussions!
Use a disc copy instead of trying to copy with the finder.

  • Error-36 and Error-42 when copying files from SD card

    Hello!
I recently switched from a PC user to a mac user! Everything is great, but ever since I got the computer (refurbished 15in macbook pro) ive had problems with copying files from my SD card to my computer!! It so frustrating! Ive tried everything! I even called apple support, and after 30 minutes of calling came to no solution! I keep getting error-36 error-43 and sometimes error-8058 !!! I tried formatting with no success, because my computer cant read the disk! It is a PNY professtional 32gb sd card. Im not sure if this problem is happening due to the fact that I previousley used this same SD on my PC, but im going to return this computer if it doesnt fix! Ive also tried doing to terminal commands but it doesn't work! Please help!!
    - from a distressed youtuber

I'm having similar problems and I'm using a 1Tb HDD ( USB connection) which has 3 partitions. I have discovered that after some time (not clear what triggers it) I start being unable to use one partition for backups. When I checked further I discovered that I cannot write any file no matter what size to it. The problem has normally disappeared for a while when I restart my computer. I've done disk verifies and things are fine. The other two partitions are Ok ... I use one for TimeMachine and the other for SuperDuper. This partition is primarily used for ChronoSync backups so I suspect that the problem is related to how ChronoSync backs up but I have yet to convince their tech support of that.

  • Confusion of aliases made for two SMB shares with same folder name

I have a SMB file server here which provides me with a Departmental personal home filestore and also a Departmental personal web filestore. The name of the folder is the same in each case - my Departmental user name. If I check the Finder Preference 'Show these items on the desktop' for 'Connected servers', I can use the Finder's 'Connect to Server' for each - smb://webhome/john and smb://home/john - to make each of them appear on my desktop as 'john'.
It's rather confusing to have to remember that (say) the upper 'john' is my home filestore and the lower one is my web filestore, so I use Finder 'Make Alias' (e.g. via right click on each when selected') to create two aliases I can name 'web john' and 'home john'.
Alas, each alias always points to the same (apparently randomly selected) share!
This looks like a bug to me. I've tried unchecking the Finder 'Connected servers' preference, and then the shares appear under folder 'SHARE' - where I cannot create any aliases at all; I get the error message 'Operation could not be completed (Error -8058)'.
Reader, do you know of a work-around which will let me distinguish on my desktop between my two identically-named folders from different shares? Alas, I have no power to change the names of the original folders.

I should have said that one cannot rename the share icons in the usual way. Not being able to do this is the real bug here. If I'd been able to do this I wouldn't have need to try to create aliases, of course.

  • Copying/duplicating CDs/DVDs

I am unable to copy a CD for some reason. If I right click on the CD icon and select "Copy", the machine does nothing. If I select "Duplicate", it gives me the following error - "Sorry, the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occurred (Error code - 8058).
What is up with this? Why am I unable to copy or duplicate?
    Jim Reiff

    Hi Jim.
You wrote: " If I select "Duplicate", it gives me the following error - "Sorry, the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occurred (Error code - 8058)."This is a Finder bug. The same problem will occur if you attempt this with a mounted disk image or other mounted volumes.
See "Mac OS X 10.4: Error -8058, unable to eject when trying to copy a disc in Finder," which also contains a link to the instructions you need for duplicating a CD or DVD.
If you select a disc (CD or DVD) or a mounted disk image on the desktop, then attempt to duplicate the selected object using either:
    - Finder > File > Duplicate
    - The Duplicate choice in the contextual menu of the selected object's icon on the desktop.
Then the problem you reported occurs. If you select the same object in the Sidebar or in Finder > Computer, Duplicate is unavailable by either of the above methods.
The bug is that Duplicate should be unavailable if the selected object (disc, mounted volume, mounted disk image) is on the desktop.
One can duplicate an unmounted disk image using Duplicate in its contextual menu, since that is seen by the OS as simply a file.
To eject a disc or mounted disk image after attempting to Duplicate it, one has to eject it using Disk Utility.
    Good luck!

  • TS3694 error code -8058

I am trying to copy some MP3 files from itunes to my USB and i keep getting 'error code -8058', what does this mean and how do i resolve it?

I have multiple unknown folders named Movies, Folder or Images everywhere within my own folders. I cannot delete them, and they tend to appear and dissappear on their own.
What do you suggest I do?
    Thank you.

  • (error code -8058) OS X ML

I am having a bunch of problems with my MacBook Pro 15" (Early 2011) after upgrading to Mountain Lion.
OS X ML or some sort of virus is creating folders on its own with different names, which I cannot select, open, drag, nor delete! The names that came up until now are: Movies, Folder, and Images. (See photo).
If I select the file, for ex. GOPR1160.JPG hold Shift Key and click on GOPR1135.mov, the folder Movies is than selected together with the two other files. When I try to drag them to trash by clicking and holding the Movies folder, nothing moves. I am only able to do this through draging through the two other files. Once I send them to trash I get this message:
I hit delete and then try to empty the trash, I get this error:
The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -8058).
The folders Movies, Images and Folder remain where I found them and cannot be deleted.
Is this a Mac Virus and is my computer infected? What should I do? I don't have a back up disk and am concerned that I might lose information from my MBP.
Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Now the folders are not there:
And the files are not in a row from a-z and 1-9.
In addition to this problem, my mac is running very slow from time to time. Sometimes, I type in something, the screen does not display what I typed. It appears after a second or two.
