  • I'm getting "Unknown Error 6" when trying to upgrade my iPhone 4S to iOS 8.1.  The phone is then stuck on the red iTunes logo + USB screen.  How can I get the phone working again?

I've tried upgrading my iPhone 4S using iTunes 12.01.26 on 4 different computers at home and at the office:
    Macbook Air - OS X version 10.7.5
Macbook Pro - OS X Yosemite
2 PCs running Windows 7 Professional
iTunes downloaded the installer and the installation process seemed to get 90% complete before showing the error, "The iPhone, "iPhone" could not be updated. An unknown error occurred (6)."
The phone is now stuck on the red iTunes logo screen:
How can I get it out of this mode?
I've tried holding the power button and home buttons down for ten seconds, then letting go of the power button, but keeping the home button down for another 10 seconds.  I've also tried Reiboot, Wondershare Dr. Fone in desperation to try to get the phone out of this mode.  Nothing seems to fix it.
If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.

i do that but it keeps getting stuck on the 'preparing to restore i phone' screen for a few mins before coming up with 'unknown error 1603'.
Just doublechecking. Have you worked through the 1603-specific instructions from the following document?

  • I am trying to upgrade my iPhone 4S to iOS 7 but it won't let me it says there's an Error ? How can I fix that?

I can't upgrade my iphone to iOS 7

The servers are overloaded. There are a hundred million people all trying to download iOS 7 at one time. Try again later

  • After trying to upgrade my iPhone to 3.0, it now doesn't have any service.

I have the 1st gen iPhone, and tried to update to 3.0 and now I keep getting error codes on iTunes saying that there is an unknown error occured with iTunes, to try again later. Now my phone has no service and can only be used in emergency mode. In the iTunes store, it will show that my phone is connected, but will not pull up any information at all for it. I tried uninstalling iTunes, and then reinstalling it, and still the same thing. It's like my phone has been completely wiped clean. Someone PLEASE help!!!! I don't know what else to do.

    Same problem here!
I think there has been too many reports of this kind to say it's not an update problem.
    Does anyone have a solution?
    Thanks.

    Hello mobleymarvin,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with installing the latest iTunes update.  I recommend following the steps below:
    Resolution
Follow these steps to resolve the issue:
    Check for .dll files
Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes and C:\Program Files\iTunes and look for .dll files.
If you find QTMovie.DLL, or any other .dll files, move them to the desktop.
    Reboot your computer.
Note: Depending on your operating system, you may only have one of the listed paths.
    Uninstall and reinstall iTunes
Uninstall iTunes and all of its related components.
Reboot your computer. If you can't uninstall a piece of Apple software, try using the Microsoft Program Install and Uninstall Utility.
    Re-download and reinstall iTunes 11.1.4.
When you get to the step to uninstall iTunes, it is important to uninstall iTunes and the related components in the order listed in the link for that step.
You can find the full article here:

  • I am trying to upgrade my iphone 5 to IOS 7.

Over an hour ago, I began updating my phone to the new 7.  It said it would take 9 hours.  Now, actually more than an hour later, it tells me it will take 10 hours.  That can't be right.  Or good.  I'm thinking of quitting the download and waiting until the next update.....will that hurt anything on my phone?  Thanks

    Update via iTunes
How to update your iOS device
Scroll down to the “Update your device using iTunes” section
Once it starts downloading, unplug your phone and just let it go. When the download is down, plug the phone back in and go through the update process.

  • Upgrading to iPhone 4 to iOS 4.3 - error 9

    Hello,
I tried to upgrade my iPhone 4 from iOS 4.1 to iOS 4.3 on Thursday, but at the middle of the upgrade "Restoring iPhone Firmware" step I received *error 9 message*. I tried restoring on another PC, done all recommendations on apple support page, used different usb cables and downloaded the firmware twice without any success in restoring. Currently my iPhone is showing the iTunes logo with the usb cable .
Any body please could suggest any other solution?

Here are the instructions to change the iTunes server for a Windows PC:
Select the hosts file (normally you can find your hosts file at C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC).
Click the Edit menu, and choose Copy.
Then, click the Edit menu again, and choose Paste. There should now be a duplicate of the hosts file named "Copy of hosts" (Windows XP) or "hosts -Copy" (Windows Vista/7).
Drag the original hosts file to your desktop. If Windows needs your permission to continue, click Continue.
Drag the "Copy of hosts" (Windows XP) or "hosts -Copy" (Windows Vista/7) to the desktop.
Right-click "Copy of hosts" (Windows XP) or "hosts -Copy" (Windows Vista/7) and choose Open. You may be prompted to choose the program you want to use to open this file. Double-click Notepad.
When Notepad opens, add this line to the bottom:  "17.151.36.30     gs.apple.com" and delete any other line that has "gs.apple.com" in it.
From the File menu, choose Save. Close Notepad.
Drag the "Copy of hosts" (Windows XP) or "hosts -Copy" (Windows Vista/7) file from your desktop back into the original location. If Windows needs your permission to continue, click Continue.
Right-click the  "Copy of hosts" (Windows XP) or "hosts -Copy" (Windows Vista/7) file, and choose Rename. Type "hosts" (without quotation marks) and press Enter.
Restart your computer and try connecting to the software update server.
Here are the links to Windows versions of iTunes 9.2.1: iTunes 9.2.1 for Windows 64 bit  or  iTunes 9.2.1 for Windows 32 bit
Finally, the firmware update file for OS 4.3.3 (Mirror 1 - iPhone 4 (4.3.3)) will work with windows.  As per above, the windows instruction is "hook up your iphone 4 (that was in recovery mode). SHIFT-click (on PCs) on the Update / Restore button in iTunes.  Then point in the direction of the IPSW file you downloaded (the 4.3.3 OS) to update / restore your iPhone/iPod."
I haven't tested this so good luck!

  • Tried to upgrade my iPhone 4 to 5.1 and now it is  stuck in "plug into itunes mode" after trying to update to iOs 5.1 and receiving error (1).

Tried to upgrade my iPhone 4 to 5.1 and now it is  stuck in "plug into itunes mode" but will not recover when I plug it in. It is coming up as "unkown error (1)". Is there anything I can do?
Also, is there any way to recover pictures I have not yet backed up? They should be on iTunes, but do not show up when I plug the phone in or otherwise.
Is there any hope in saving this phone or is my best bet contacting Verizon or Apple to overnight me a new one?

    From iPhoneWiki:
Try changing the USB port (the back one of chassis is better) and restart computer.
The installed version of iTunes may also be too old. Update iTunes.
Also put your iPhone in DFU mode when doing the above and restore. It's a software error.

okay I've done everything regarding the transfer process (via file>transfer purchases) and syncing, so everything on my iPhone device seems to have been transferred to my iMac... however, I still get that message ("There are purchased items on the iPhone..."), trying to upgrade the iOS Have tried several times the same process of hitting transfer purchases via file, but nothing seems to make that message go away! Would have been nice to know which files I actually do need to transfer, which I don't get any info on of course...
Starting to get really annoying this thing.. Any smart suggestions what's going on?
