Error - apple tv cannot play the current song

I have something of a problem with playing audio files on my Apple TV. Most of my songs were encoded as AAC files using FAAC (version 1.24.1May 17 2005), and when I try to play these on the Apple TV (synced or streamed), I get the message "apple tv cannot play the current song". However these songs play fine on both my Mac and all of my iPods.
Songs that I have ripped using iTunes play fine on the Apple TV, but these are only a fraction of my total music collection.
I really want to avoid having to re-encode all my music with iTunes, so is there another solution? I guess I would really like the Apple TV software updated so that it plays these files, but I won't hold my breath. In the meantime, it would be useful if I could smart sort all my music so that I can identify which tracks are compatible with the Apple TV, but I can't see a way of sorting by the 'encoded with' meta data.
Alternatively, maybe there is way of converting the FAAC-encoded tracks to look like iTunes-encoded ones???
Any suggestions most welcome at this point!

Thanks for the hint, but I've checked the tags both from within iTunes and using Media Rage, and I can't see anything untoward. I'm no tagging expert, so I may have missed something, but I'm getting that sinking feeling of knowing that I've got to re-import 1800 tracks
BTW, if I re-import the AAC files back into iTunes, they play okay; but I don't like the idea of the 'double-lossy' compression, and I'm sure I can hear the difference.

  • Apple TV music video error "Apple TV cannot play the current song"

We have been using Apple TV successfully for many months now, purchasing songs, videos, etc on Apple TV (as well as syncing with a MacBook). The other day we purchased two new music videos, played them once, and now we get that error message "Apple TV cannot play the current song." It plays on Itunes on the laptop. These videos were actually purchased through the Apple TV! Any ideas? I tried restarting Apple TV and the laptop. Thanks.

  • Apple TV cannot play the current song - any idea why?

I'm seeing this with some songs that I'm trying to stream from my main iTunes library; all AAC files at 160 kbps. Does anyone have any idea why this happens to only certain songs (in this case it's all the songs of one album, which is even more curious...)?

Turns out this occurs with some songs when you add art with CoverScout.

  • Apple TV cannot play the current song

    Why is this?
Plays fine on majority of tracks in library but not on others.
    Current updates in place

OK, so it sparked a reply anyway.
Perhaps if I come up with a problem again there might be a 'checklist' you can assist with of information required for somebody to assist? Just a thought

  • "Not enough free space" and "cannot play the current song"

I have a reasonably large (about 80gb) music store, consisting of mostly AAC's ripped from my CD collection but also a lot of iTunes store music and a sprinkling of MP3s, podcasts and iPhoto pictures, about 7,000 items in all.
For some reason the Apple TV appears to sync nicely but then I have the following problems:
    1. Whenever I select a song I get the message: "Apple TV cannot play the current song"
    2. There is an exclamation mark next to Apple TV in iTunes stating that some of the tracks couldn't get copied across as there wasn't enough room
    3. Only one picture from iPhoto can be seen when you do the slideshow.
The Apple TV is connected to my network directly into the back of the new Apple Airport Extreme (802.1n) base station by ethernet and can play trailers beautifully. The head unit is a Mac Mini running 10.4.9 and 7.1.1 with plenty of free disk space and 2gb of RAM.
    I've tried:
    - Reset to factory settings
    - Restart the Mac Mini running iTunes
    - Power off everything and start from scratch
    - Selecting a sub-set of stuff to copy across
Before I reset, iTunes reported about 4GB used out of 32GB but now it shows 32.64GB free out of 32.83GB.
So frustrating.... feels like a genuine bug. Will continue with my methodical trial and error but would love some pointers from anyone who has seen anything similar. Searching on these forums showed up nothing.
    Thanks in advance

Hmm... looks like an ID-10T error... source drive containing the music files had failed, a quick repair and things are looking a lot better.
If this is the cause iTunes was very confusing, it appears to cache each set of error messages every time a sync fails, i.e. if it had tried to sync 3 times then you had to see all the error messages 3 times, plus the messages were things like 'not enough space' instead of 'reconnect the drive you idiot'.
Syncing is taking a lot longer right now, suggesting the files are actually getting copied. I thought it was quick....
Will confirm all is well shortly.

  • My ipod nano 7th gen. will not advance to the next song, it will keep playing the current song until manuaaly changed. All updates are current.

I had this issue with my 6th generation nano.  It was driving me nuts, until I realized that somehow locked the repeat button on. Selecting one song rather than a selection will cause whatever song you have selected to play over and over and over and over..

  • Apple TV will only play the first song on an album, why?

When I press play on an album (music), Apple TV only play the first song, then it stops. Why?? I can understand it when I press play on a spesific song/track, but when I press play on an entire album, I want Apple TV to play the entire album.

You need to put checkmarks in front of all your music.

  • HT1933 I bought six songs using my itunes gift card in February but I cannot play the songs or downlaod them to my ipod because I get an error saying the original file could not be found.  I have used the gift card previously with no issue.  How do I fix

I bought six songs using my itunes gift card in February but I cannot play the songs or downlaod them to my ipod because I get an error saying the original file could not be found.  I have used the gift card previously with no issue.  How do I fix it?

Have you moved or deleted those tracks on your computer (the gift card has got nothing to do with it) ?
You might be able to re-download them via the Purchased link under Quick Links on the right-hand side of the iTunes store home page on your computer's iTunes (re-downloading isn't possible in all countries) - if those songs appear there then delete the entries from your iTunes library (where you are clicking on them to play them and gettinf the 'original file' error), and they should then get a cloud symbol against them for re-downloading.
If they don't appear in that link then have you got them on, for example, an external drive ?

  • HT1349 I downloaded the latest version of iTunes and now I cannot play the songs in order, they skip around randomly. The shuffle feature is off. All I really want to do is play an album from start to finish.

I downloaded the latest version of iTunes and now I cannot play the songs in order. It will skip around or just stop playing the song currently playing when it is finished. I just want to play an album from start to finish. The shuffle feature is turned off.

It is working now. I no longer get the message about the item not being available in the US and I can access the store.

  • Is there a keystroke to play the currently highlighted song?

i use the arrow keys to select an album (left or right arrow)
and to select a song on an album (up or down arrow)
but when i press the space bar to play the song i have highlighted
iTunes plays the first song on the album. very annoying!
is there a keystroke combination that will play the song you have currently highlighted in your tracklist?

that works in every view except Cover Flow, which is the view i'm using. Sometimes it works and mostly it doesn't.
i think it has something to do with the area of the itunes window that i am focused on. i click on the Cover Flow area so that i can use the left and right arrows to jump from album to album, thene the up or down arrows to select the song i want.
the return button will play the highlighted song maybe once. i can't get this to always work.
the enter button either makes the song title editable or returns the error tone.
i'm using the full mac keyboard with number pad. and in keyboard preferences i have "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys" checked.

  • Apple TV will not play the entire song

I use Apple TV to play music because of the sound system hooked to my HD television. However, I have discovered that Apple TV will not play the entire song if it is long. For example, "Tales From Topographic Oceans" by Yes is one album of six 20+-minute songs. When each track gets about half way through, the system switches to the next track. I cannot find anything in Settings to fix this, either in iTunes on Apple TV. Help?

the newer appletv dont have their own strorage
so they can only access the shared lib of the computer
some computers are set to power saving levels where they will turn off if not used by a real user for X mins
if that happens the shared lib will no longer be avaible to the atv in which case it will not be able to keep playing

  • How do I make all my apple devices play the same song at the same time?

I went to a party once and one of their family members was in charge of music. They used iTunes on a laptop and used their wifi hub with itunes, they then had all Apple devices connected to the laptop (through wifi) and played the same song in every room. How did they do it? If so please let me know as I have a party coming up soon!
    thanks

can I buy one of these
    Yes, if you want to.
You can buy any of these, or other devices as long as they say they are AirPlay compatible and they will work.
and then it would work for all round the house or do I have to buy one for every room?
It will work whenever your wifi signal is.
If you want music in a room, you need something for that room. Or turn up the volume and hear it in the next room also...

My apple tv continues to play the same song from a playlist that is on shuffle. Is there a setting I need to adjust?

I do not see anything there. I have a left arrow and song title on top with a list icon.  Nothing on the bottom but the direction arrows, pause button and volume.

    - Have you went to Settings>Store and signed out and then signed back in?
    - Did you by chance create a new account? Apps are locked to the account that purchased them and you have to sign into that account to update apps purchased with that account.
