Error at tend of 2.0 Update "The iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored.

Hi,
I updated to iTunes 7.7 last night. Got the 2.0 download and install from iTunes this morning. I started the install and walked away. Came back about 20 minutes later and the following error popped up from iTunes:
"The iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1014)."
On the screen of the iPhone, it shows the USB cord with an arrow pointing at the iTunes icon.
Anyone know what gives? I'm tempted to start over, but did I just loose all of my data?
Please help!

Restoring your iPhone will not solve your problem. The problem is not your phone or the software but Apple's Servers. I have your exact problem. The bad news is you won't be able to fix your situation until enough traffic is off of Apple's servers. Apple is not sure when these issues will be resolved.
I actually got through to Apple tech support earlier today and was advised not to try to update my phone till Saturday or Sunday at the earliest. They were very, very apologetic but Apple took on to much by launching the new iPhone and 2.0 software update worldwide all on the same day.
Right now my phone is useless but things will be better soon.

This may indicate a hardware issue with your device. Follow Troubleshooting security software issues, and restore your device on a different known-good computer. If the errors persist on another computer, the device may need service.
The "device may need service" means a hardware problem. in that case make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

  • My iPad 2 will not restore using iTunes. It keeps telling me - the iPad "iPad" could not be restored. An unknow error occurred (4) - I have tried every suggestion I could find so far. Any ideas as to what I can do?

My iPad 2 will not restore using iTunes. It just quit a week or two ago and showed that I had to connect to iTunes.
When I do the "restore and update" it does not complete the "verifying iPad restore with Apple" and then shows the following message:
The iPad "iPad" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (40).
I have tried it a number of times. Also turned of anti-virus and firewall. Tried on different computers. All resulted in the same message. The iPad is only 2 1/2 years old, so I hope it can be fixed.
    Does anyone have a solution?

i've reset my ipod, restored it and wiped all my music off and then transferred it all back on, downloaded the new ipod updater 28-06-2006 and made sure my ipod has the most recent software etc on there, but still no joy!
i never had a problem transferring photos onto my old colour photo ipod (4th generation?), so it's really annoying that i have a supposed 'better' ipod now that won't do this for me!

  • The iPad "iPad" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1)

I tried to update my iPad 2 (Wifi, 3G) to ios 5.1.1 over the air. I left it running at night because it said approximately 3 hours to download. In the morning it had the connect to itunes symbol (Basically in restore mode). I have tried restoring it and it runs well until it gets to restoring iPad firmware. It gets stuck here for maybe an hour and eventually says " The iPad "iPad" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1). I have tried it on three different computers running windows 7 and MAC OS but i get the same result. We dont have any apple stores or service centers in my country. It is a relatively brand new iPad as i have only had it for about a month, it has not been jailbroken or anything. So i really dont understand why this is the case. Apple doesnt seem to have any solution for this from what i have googled. Is there anyone who has succesfully overcome this problem. Please help. Apple you need to get your act together because it is soooooooooooo frustrating and you dont seem to be doing anything. I have wasted 3 days trying to get this thing to work and nothing.

  • The ipod "ipod" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1602)

After trying to update ipod, during the phase where I had to back-up the ipod, an error message popped up (I can't remember what it said). Now, the ipod is just stuck on the "plugin to itunes" icon. Itunes and my computer can't recognize my ipod anymore. I have tried putting it into DFU mode and my computer detects my ipod and begins installing the drivers. On my first attempt, the drivers installation failed, so I reinstalled itunes and quicktime. Then after putting it into DFU mode again, it begins installing the drivers, but this time it was successful. Now I had the option to 'restore' my ipod so I did what I could. However, when I was installing it, 2 more drivers had to be installed and they were successful, however, I get this error message:
The ipod "ipod" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1602)
Any help would be greatly appreciate. Thanks very much for your time.

Error 1600, 1601, 1602: Try the following steps to resolve this error:
Ensure proper USB isolation troubleshooting has been performed, and test with a known-good cable.
Follow the steps listed for Error 1604.
This error may be resolved by disabling, deactivating, or uninstalling third-party security, antivirus, and firewall software. See steps in this article for details on troubleshooting security software.
Error 1604: This error is often related to USB timing. Try changing USB ports, uninstalling and reinstalling USB ports, and other available USB troubleshooting steps (troubleshooting USB connections, device not recognized properly, computer won't recognize a FireWire or USB device). If you are using a dock, bypass it and connect directly to the white Apple USB dock connector cable. If the issue persists on a known-good computer, the device may need service.
If the issue is not resolved by USB isolation troubleshooting, and another computer is not available, try these steps to resolve the issue:
Connect the device to iTunes, confirm that the device is in Recovery Mode. If it's not in Recovery Mode, put it into Recovery Mode.
Restore and wait for error 1604.
    When prompted, click OK.
Close and reopen iTunes while iPhone remains connected.
iPhone should now be recognized in Recovery Mode again.
    Try to restore again.
If the steps above do not resolve the issue, try restoring using a known-good USB cable, computer, and network connection.

Downgrading to a previous version of iOS is not supported. If you have installed software to performunauthorized modifications to your iOS device, that software may have redirected connections to the update server (gs.apple.com) within the Hosts file. Uninstall the unauthorized modification software from the computer.
Edit out the "gs.apple.com" redirect from your hosts file, and then restart the computer for the host file changes to take affect. For steps to edit the Hosts file and allow iTunes to communicate with the update server, see iTunes: Troubleshooting iTunes Store on your computer, iPhone, iPad, or iPod—follow steps under the heading Blocked by configuration (Mac OS X / Windows) > Rebuild network information > The hosts file may also be blocking the iTunes Store. If you do not uninstall the unauthorized modification software prior to editing the hosts file, that software may automatically modify the hosts file again on restart.
Avoid using an older or modified .ipsw file. Try moving the current .ipsw file (see Advanced Steps > Rename, move, or delete the iOS software file (.ipsw) below for file locations), or try restoring in a new user to ensure that iTunes downloads a new .ipsw.

  • The iPod 'iPod' could not be restored. An unknown error occured(9).

I got my iPTouch 16 GB on Oct.13 and on hooking to XP SP2 PC got it on the iTunes ver 7.4.3.1, was able to download music after charging. iTunes showed that a new software ver 1.1.1 for iPTouch was available(of150MB).Got it downloaded to iTunes but when it started to download to iPTouch, it failed and asked to do resotre. All this happened in just few hours of getting it.
Since then, even after reinstalling the iTunes, my iPTouch is not going beyond showing the icon of a plug and a CD.Every time iTune is able to detect the iPTouch saying that it has detected an iPod in recovery mode, you must restore it. And on doing so that error of 'The iPod 'iPod' could not be restored. An unknown error occured(9).' comes up and it again asks to restore.
Though every time iTunes is able to detect an iPTouch, my XP does not show it in 'my computer' as any hooked device or drive.
May I request Apple and other members on this forum to help me out. It is clearly a software problem.
    Many thanks in advance.
    Jetavya

Thanks to all members for sharing in. In my case finally, I got a brand new replacement from Apple through their Authorised Service Provider,A-1 Infotech, Mumbai. Since in India, Apple does not have a widespread presence, the service and support I got was amazing.
In my case though I never came to know whether the problem was of software or hardware, but the simultaneous step I had taken was to call the toll free number of Apple in India and got my problem registered. Since the iPod Touch was under warranty, I got it replaced without much hassels. I advise the same path for other users and if possible get the additional Apple Care Protection Plan for additional one more year.
Though I have yet to find out how to avail that Protection Plan in India.
    Best wishes,

  • The iPod "iPod" could not be restored.  An unknown error occurred (6)

I know this type of error has been posted before but I've tried everything I've read in other posts and have not gotten anywhere.
When I try to restore my Ipod Touch, after it is into the restore for a while, I get the message:
+*The iPod "iPod" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (*6).+
    iPod Touch 1G
    Firmware 3.12
    What I've tried:
    - Rebooting host.
    - Resetting iPod Touch - Holding down home and power for 10 seconds
    - Using different computers with fresh versions of Itunes. Computers were running Vists, XP, and Windows 7.
    - Putting iPod touch into DFU mode (Hold down Home and power for 10 seconds then let go of power until iPod goes into DFU mode.
I always end up with The iPod "iPod" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (6).
I did get extended Apple care service but of course it ran out last month!
I did get a log from one of the failures if that would be of help.
    Any suggestions?
    Dave

Well my ipod is just out of warranty so I'm not sure if they will even look at it but I'll try tomorrow to bring it to the Apple store.

  • The iPod "iPod" could not be restored. An unknown error has occurred (11).

I recieved an iPod from a friend of mine. He has bought a new one and is currently using it with his apple ID. I have plugged in the iPod he gave me and attempted to restore it. When it goes through most of the restoration process the error "The iPod "iPod" could not be restored. An unknown error has occurred (11)." pops up. The iPod is also stuck on a screen with a USB cord pointing twords the iTunes icon, i shut it off then turn back on and this image is still on the screen. The iPod also does not appear in MyComputer. It does appear in iTunes but it only has the name, no serial number, capacity, or software version. I also re-installed iTunes.  I am using windows 7 on my Toshiba Satellite A665 laptop.
I would appreciate any help that anyone has to offer.
    Thank you.
