Error at the end of Archive and Install; Need Quicktime reinstall quickly!

I got all the way through an Archive and Install and at the very end it said there was an error in the process. Everytime I do it, same thing.
I'm trying to reinstall Quicktime 6 because I've read Final Cut Pro 4 doesn't work well with QT 7—I downloaded it recently. FPC performance has been horrible ever since!
I followed the easy step by step process Apple provides for Archive and Install but it doesn't work in the end. I'm trying to reinstall Quicktime 6. Currently working with 10.3.9. My original disks are 10.3.
I'm running off the original disks; don't know why it won't do it.
Need Quicktime reinstall quickly!

I already had, the problem is not covered on that page.
I'd had no response within a few hours so I had to force the Powerbook to shut down. On rebooting, it only got as far as the Apple logo and the progress wheel. I left it for half an hour and it got no further. I reset the PRAM again (I'd already done it before the actions detailed in the original post). Nothing. I tried again to Safe Boot. Nothing - not even the login screen.
I then tried to re-install OS X 10.5 - this time the option to 'update' was available which I did. It automatically restarted but still would not proceed beyond the Apple logo and progress wheel.
That's how things stand now. I have given up for the day but I can't think of any other course of action apart from a complete erase and install but that would be far to drastic because unfortunately, despite my insistence last time there were problems, nothing has been backed up.
Incidentally, I tried to boot in target mode to recover their account folder - the disk mounted on my MacBook Pro but when I tried to open it, my Finder crashed.

If you put a little more detail in your profile it would save a lot of surmising on our part.
Also more details on what OS/Version the computer came with and what version is on the DVD you are using for installing, as well as the kind of DVD it is.

  • A game bought from the App Store crashed and I need to reinstall it, but I can't delete it from Launchpad

I bought a game from the app store, and after playing for a while it crashed. Now it says it is damaged and I have to delete it and then re download it. When I go to the launchpad, there is no X to delete it. I paid $8 for this game and would like to play it..

The X appears when you click and hold the icon and all the icons start jiggling.
You can delete the app by dragging and dropping it from the Applications folder into the Trash.

  • How to find "Archive and Install" after Tiger reinstall?

I have recently reinstalled Tiger and have gone what I believe is the right steps for Archiving. Now I didn't know that is would effect the current programs on my computer like it has. Many will now not work properly or even open at all. Are these files or the information for the programs somewhere else? If so How do I find then and get back the programs like they used to be?

  • Cannot Archive and Install--help.

I recently upgraded from Tiger to Leopard and am having a number of problems since the upgrade. Would like to Archive and Install to get a clean System folder, but that option is now blanked out and only "Erase and Install" is available. Permissions are repaired and Disc verifies fine. What can I do to restore the ability to Archive and Install?

Alternatively, reinstall Leopard via E&I and migrate from the bootable backup/clone of your previous Tiger installation—assuming you followed normal practices and made one.

  • Need help with archive and install

I'm doing and archive and install. The first try was with a defective retail version of OS X Tiger, which did part of the job then stalled. Now I've been able to get a good DVD of this and was able to do an archive and install, although I couldn't check the box to save user settings etc., On the screen it gives me 3 options transfer info from another mac, transfer info from another partition on this mac or do not transfer my info. I'm new to all this, because of the first failed archive and install do I transfer the info from another partition or not transfer at all and find the old folder later on in the process?

    Hi D,
I couldn't check the box to save user settings etc.
I think that is due to the partial previous install moving things to a Previous System folder, but not finshing.
Let's see if that's what happened... if you have 2 Macs with Firewire this could be a lot easier.
Oh, do you have a Backup?
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

After quitting DU, look for Terminal in that Menu Bar, open that and type in this...
Wait, let's hear if you have another Mac or Boot Disk first...

  • Archive and install best option ?

    Hi,
I want to upgrade to leopard but what is best knowing that i noticed a minor issue in my HD when I checked ans repair autorisation?
Is simple upgrade will do or should I archive and install in order to resolve the issue ?
    Many thanks guys

Upgrading is never a real good idea, especially if you are experiencing problems from the start. Archive and Install would be a better route.

  • Failed Archive and Install - Have I lost all my user files?

In another thread I have reported printing problems while running OS 10.4.11 on a Cube http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1401894&tstart=0. Tonight I decided to do an Archive and Install to try to fix the problems. I got a message saying that the installation had failed and that I should try to reinstall. When I did so I was given the option to Archive and Install but the check box for Save Users and Network Settings could not be checked. Rather than trying to reinstall I quit the installer and specified an OS 9 system folder for booting. After booting into OS 9 I examined the Users folder and found no folders corresponding to my two user accounts, only a shared folder. The OS X Applications folder appears to contain all my applications.
It seems that the failed installation erased my user accounts. Is that correct? If so, how can I recover them?
Of course I did a backup of my user files before installing, right? NO!!!! My last backup was eight days ago.
    John Link

Yes, an Archive and Install will not erase the disk or your files. If you use the option to preserve user accounts and preferences those will be transferred into the newly created system. However, your existing system is a failed installation so if you do another Archive and Install it cannot transfer your user account because it is not in the existing system. Plus you will need sufficient free space on the hard drive for yet another system - about 6-8 GBs.
Once you backup your personal data and your Home folder, I would suggest you just erase the hard drive, reinstall OS X from scratch, then copy your Home folder backup to the newly installed system. These articles, How to get files from a previous home directory after Archive and Install and Mac OS X- How to recover a home folder (directory), explain the process. Although written for an Archive and Install scenario it is essentially the same procedure you would have to follow.
How to Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
    4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    5. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the startup or source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.

  • Archive and Install misses-Some-applications ( ? )

Amidst two efforts of Archiving and reinstalling I have been amazed at two consistencies . One is that the routinely running iTunes , i.e. working like a Swiss Clock , disappears and the Address Book remains among the missing .
The missing Address Book is the reason for the flurry of Archiving and Installing , so I am inclined to accept that as less surprising that it remains unusable . However , thanks to a stand alone down load , I can recover my iTunes application from Apple Computer .
This somehow strikes me as odd that an other wise happy Operating System will Ostracise first an Address Book then Strike another application after being "Restored" .
What gremlins pursue in my Address Book remains a secret , but by piling Mount Ossa on top of Olympus , then Mount Pelion on top of Ossa , so to speak , What can the meaning of my Archive and install twice removing iTunes be ?
Having purchased Pacifist I had entertained high hopes that this parsing of the install Disc would provide a substantive fix in replacing the "Missing" applications . I say "Missing" because they are right there according to my lying eyes and Get Info .
All ideas entertained until the cows come home , Frederick

In the interest of saving space, can I trash the app folder from my previous system?
    Yes.
What else can I safely trash from the previous system without compromising my data?
Anything which was reinstalled. That folder is left there partially so that any files you may have added to the previous system can be restored.

  • Leopard archive and install taking a very very very long time

    HI,
Really hope someone can help me. Ok last night after my screen went dodgy after a bad dvd, i removed said dvd and restarted. restarted as normal until grey screen went away to be replaced by a static blue screen. Tried to reboot many times but same thing...tried to reboot using using safe mode and that worked but did not fix the problem.
After consulting many of these discussion pages on the topic "blue screen" i came to the reality that i needed to reinstall leopard. so now i am in the process of archiving and installing but its taking a really long time, i know that its not just a std install thus will probably require a little more time but its at the point where it says "about a minute remaining" and its been like that for 1 1/2 hours.....is this normal???
Over the past month i have had to reinsert the battery as it was not charging, the mac sometimes just completly dies and now this problem with start up.....is my mac trying to tell me its slowly dying???
    Kind regards folks,
    brian.

Obviously if you turn the Mac off you'll corrupt the installation (which may already have happened) and you'll lose everything on the HD. It's a hard thing to have to do I know. I also had installation issues when upgrading to Leopard, but I'd never attempt such an undertaking without having a bootable clone of my current system in order to avoid what you may be forced to do. I don't even update the OS incrementally without first making sure I'm backed up. External HD's are really cheap these days. Not much solace to you now, I know, but hopefully you should never have to be in this situation again. Other than that I don't know what else to tell you. How long you leave the installation going before coming to a decision is down to you. An A&I should take not much longer than an upgrade to complete. It is possible there's a fault on the install disk itself. Did you let it verify the integrity of disk this time?

  • "The application Safari has unexpectedly quit." / "Archive and Install"

...The system and other applications have not been affected.
Would you like to submit a bug report to Apple?
I was working on my eMac last night when all of a sudden Safari shut down. I tried to open it again and I kept getting the above error message.
At first, I thought this was no big deal, as I just downloaded Mozilla Firefox. However, it seems that whatever error caused this corruption in Safari has also affected my MSN Messenger, and a few other internet related Apps.
I don't know if any of you have come across this problem before, but it would be greatly appreciated if you could email me your suggestions to fixing this problem.
I called Apple support, and the lady suggest looking for a way to "archive and install preserving" so that I don't lose any of my important files. I'm sure that this might fix my problem as well.
Please let me know if you have a solution for me!!
    Eric.

    Eric Jackson Wood,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Doing an Archive and Install because Safari unexpectedly quit is roughly akin to using several sticks of dynamite to take out a housefly in the kitchen. How much RAM does your Mac have, and how long had Safari been running continuously before the quit? Safari does have a known memory leak problem (the Safari 3 beta may have fixed that; too soon to tell for sure); if you have a minimal amount of RAM (256 MB or less), run multiple applications simultaneously, and leave Safari running for several hours, you can expect Safari to bog down. If you then try to load some types of web page constructs, the unexpectedly quit message isn't quite so unexpected. (Quitting and relaunching Safari every few hours is a viable workaround; in sever cases you may need to restart the computer as well.)
How were other Internet apps affected? Slowdowns, unable to connect, unable to find sites, or what? What version of MSN Messenger are you using? (MSN Messenger isn't known for being overly robust in the first place.) If a number of online utilities all begin to act strange at the same time, my first suspect would be the local network and the ISP. Is the problem still persistent after restarting the computer and after several hours (to allow the ISP to fix any glitches on their end)?
If Safari continues to misbehave, launch Safari and before going to any website, try going to the Safari menu and select the commands to reset Safari and clear cache, then restart Safari and see it that helps. If you have Safari set to open going to a homepage rather than opening a blank page, first move /Users/ [your_username]/ Library/ Preferences/ com.apple.Safari.plist to the Desktop before launching Safari to reset it and clear its caches. If Safari then works, you can quit it and try moving you previous preferences back; if Safari begins acting up again, trash the old preferences and re-enter your desired settings in a newly-created preferences file.

  • Archive and install error lost files

My Powerbook G4 wouldn't boot up, when restarted it got stuck on the apple screen. I didn't have my install disks, however had an old install disk that came with an ibook G4. I inserted the disk, and the requirements read an apple computer with a G3 G4 or G5 processor. I ran the archive and install. A message came up at the end of the installation saying there was an error, however the computer started up on reboot. The problem is that the computer looks to be wiped out, the only thing on the desktop is the hard drive icon. When I went to get info on the hard drive the drive is almost full, so the information is still there. My applications are still in the application folder, however none of them will boot. My documents and music are all in the previous system folder. When a document was opened from the previous system folder it launched, and now word will launch from the dock. I tried to mount an external hard drive to back up all the files in order to run a erase and install, however the hard drive wouldn't mount. Any ideas?

Back up your personal files from the Previous System Folder. You will need to erase the drive and reinstall OS X. However, you cannot use an installer disc for a different Mac model as these original installer discs are machine dependent. You need either a retail OS X installer for a version that will boot the computer or the original discs that came with the computer.
I suggest doing the following before installing OS X:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. If you need to reformat your startup volume, then you must boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.

My Iphoto has disappeared all of a sudden. I tried to use my application disc but it gives me an error at the end of installation. I don't have to pay for an App that was already on my computer. How do I download or get IPhoto in my situation?

Is this an iLife installation disk or system install disk?  In either case download the demo version of   Pacifist and open the install package on the disk.  Locate iPhoto and use Pacifist to install iPhoto.  Then you'll need to apply the latest updater from the Apple Downloads webpage:
Apple - Support - Downloads.  Just search for the iPhoto version you installed to get the updaters for that version.
