Error "Building boot caches on boot helper partition failed" when installing Yosemite

I Have a MacBook Pro 8,3 17" and have been running OSX Maverick 10.9.5 quite happily.  I finally decided to bite the bullet and update to OSX 10.10.1.  I went through the App Store and clicked install on the Yosemite offered there.
THe install took about 55 mins and then right at the end it reported: Building boot caches on boot helper partition failed, install failed.
now i can't boot normally or restore from my time machine backup.
can anybody suggest a fix?

Install OS X Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer.

    Hi Willy,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
The article below provides information about specific update and restore alerts, including the 9006 alert that you saw when attempting to update your iPad 2 to iOS 8.1. Try using the instructions provided to see if the issue is caused by a conflict with the security software on your computer.
Resolve iOS update and restore errors

Related errors: 2, 4, 6, 9, 1000, 1611, 9006. Sometimes security software can prevent your device from communicating with either the Apple update server or with your device.
Check your security software and settings to make sure that they aren't preventing a connection to the Apple servers.
    I hope this helps,

I am keep getting this error "The disk is used for Time Machine Backup" when installing the new OSX Mountain Lion" when doing the upgrade to newly OS.

  • Boot camp not recognize keyboard and mouse when installing windows 7 pro 64 bit

    Hi,
I have some issue when installing windows 7 pro 64 bit using boot camp. after done partitioning the windows drive and when boot to windows installation process, i've got stuck in the first screen when choosing the language. it seems that the keyboard and mouse are not detected.
i'm using boot camp ver. 5.0.
does anyone have similar problem with me?

I have finally successfully installed Windows 7 x64 on MacBook Air 13.3" (2013) thru Bootcamp.
Problem:  After Windows 7 install thru BootCamp, I got to the first login screen and not input devices (Mouse, keyboard, USB) worked.   I tried to boot into Windows Safemode, but I received the error  "Windows can not complete installation in Safe Mode".
Cause:  WIndows 7 does not have native USB 3.0 drivers, included on the install images.
Resolution:  I downloaded the latest device drivers with thru BootCamp and copied them to the USB Flash Drive that had my bootable Windows 7 x64 install on it.  The second option in BootCamp is "Download Support Media".  This does more than just download drivers.  It creates a file called "autoattended.xml".  This is key as it tells Windows during the install process to use the device drivers that you download.  Otherwise, you need to do it manually, which you can't because you have no mouse or keyboard.
NOTE:  I had no need of a super drive because I had all the files on one USB flash drive.  Therefore, I don't think it matter which side of the MBA the USB drive was plugged in, as other solutions suggested.

  • [Forum FAQ] Troubleshooting error "The specified SQL server instance is not valid" when installing SCOM reporting service

    Symptom
If you have failed to install SCOM reporting service, you may encounter below error when you reinstall it:
“The specified SQL server instance is not valid”.
    (Figure 1)
    Figure 1.
    Reason
This issue may be caused by multiple reasons, for example the reasons in Figure 1.
However, you may find that SSRS and Report Server website are configured correctly and no SSL or proxy Server is used. In these scenario, you can open the log file under path
    to find the root reason:
    C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSRS11.MSSQLSERVER\Reporting Services\LogFiles
Later, you will find the error as below:
    ERROR: Throwing Microsoft.ReportingServices.Library.ReportServerDisabledException: , Microsoft.ReportingServices.Library.ReportServerDisabledException:
The report server cannot decrypt the symmetric key that is used to access sensitive or encrypted data in a report server database. You must either restore a backup key or delete all encrypted content. ---> System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException

    at Microsoft.ReportingServices.Library.ConnectionManager.<GetEncryptionKey>b__2()
    --- End of inner exception stack trace ---;
    Solution
According to the error message, you can delete encrypted content by following the steps below:
Open SQL Reporting Services Configuration Manager.
    Select “Encryption Keys”.
Click “Delete” to delete all encrypted content. (Figure 2)
    Figure 2.
After that, we can install SCOM reporting service again, after successfully install reporting service, we should see the SCOM operation console as below:
    Figure 3.
In addition, you may also encounter other errors when installing SCOM reporting service, and the troubleshooting steps may be different. However, we can also check SQL reporting
service logs to find the root reason.

  • Partition fails when entity manager and DBResourceMgr kept together on single CPU Sparc box

We have this situation where we create partitons with the DBResourceMgr (user-visible and session-dialogued)and its consumer EntityManager together in one partition, as recommended by Forte Design pattern for Database Resource Managers. This partition fails to startup on a Single CPU Sparc box whereas starts fine on a Double CPU Sparc box !! Any clue ?

The error you are getting is the one you get on the client when this process fails, right? You should be able to see the real problem in the log of the partition that you called (the one where DBMgrProxy lives in) - that should be on the server. The real clue is that very bizarre "This usually means the process at the other end of the wire failed. Please go look there and find out why." (:).

  • Error message: Installation completed but some optional components failed to install correctly.

The above error message, with (6) at its end, appears when I try to download AI CC.  There are no fatal errors, just "optional" ones, but the program installation fails and there's no way to complete it without the optionals.  I've seen this message before with other program downloads, but those have been resolved, I think by running CC Cleaner on the entire CC installation and starting again.  I'd like to solve this without having to uninstall and reinstall my other apps, especially the larger ones, since the time suck is huge.  Has anyone else resolved this problem?
I've had lots of problems trying to get CC apps set up--some have been solved by Adobe, apparently, as they disappear, and a couple by me.  I'm also currently unable to download the latest PS bug fix, though the first one installed fine. Is this new system going to get itself sorted soon?
I've run CC Cleaner several times--though no AI CC appears on the list--and have signed out of the Cloud and back in.  Computer runs Windows 7, 64 bit.

I am pasting below the error log for today's attempt to download/install AI
CC.  The number and specific types of non-fatal errors changes will change
    with each attempt.
I am not inclined (nor have I time) to try to troubleshoot these errors
myself and will, when I have time, call consumer support to deal with this
(and with installing latest PS CC bug fixes).  Earlier this year, I spent
upwards of 24 actual hours with Adobe techs on what turned out, after
several weeks, to be an Adobe server malfunction.  Adobe's customers should
not have to become Adobe (or computer) techs in order to have access and
use of programs for which we pay.  If you can read this error log and
suggest a fix, I would obviously be much appreciative.

  • You can't change the startup disk to the selected disk: Building boot caches on boot helper partition failed.??

I recently installed windows 8 with boot camp and now I'm getting this error whenever I try to switch my default boot partition to mac os.. does anyone know how to fix this?

I got the same problem, only with Win 7, but after a day's search on the net I found a solution. Something very simple and easy to use.
Open up Terminal and run the following command, where DISK NAME is the name of the disk you want to boot in. PS. use the quotes (") if you disk's name is longer than 2 words.
sudo bless -mount /Volumes/"DISK NAME" -setBoot
    THIS WORKED FOR ME!!

Sorry I don't know however  you do have 90 days of free AppleCare telephone support. This sounds like the perfect time to begin using it.

I have made a usb installation drive and have got as far as the root prompt on installation after having the uefi issue with loader and using the hashtool successfully on the wiki page.  However I did not go any further because I had not the partitioning done.  And I am stuck.  My system has a 500gb disk running windows 8.1.  The partition is like the following
    /dev/sda1     ntfs     Recovery    400mb
    /dev/sda2     fat32     ESP         300mb
/dev/sda3   unknown    microsoft reserved partition   128mb

/dev/sda7    ntfs     Push Button Reset     19.53gb     hidden diag
I can boot gparted from a cdrom.  Where would I install archlinux and how do I format the partition.  I suppose I will be using uefi and formatting a partition accordinlgy.

  • Error code 0x00000004 when installing Yosemite?

I have a family member's 2012 13 inch MacBook Pro that failed to boot one day (month ago). I've tried to restore via Recovery and install from all OS's I have available to me (Mavericks and Yosemite). I've downloaded each OS from the Mac App Store. Each time I try to install Mac OS X I get an error. While Mountain Lion (was installed on recovery partition) never included any information, Mavericks and Yosemite gave me an error log. After scanning it, I found the error code of 0x00000004.
In reading other threads, I understand this may be a faulty RAM stick issue? Anyone had this error before? Are there hardware tests I can run? The full log is below.

  • Partition failed, re-install Leopard? Can I use Time Machine after?

I got a Boot Camp error when trying to partition my MacBook after upgrading to Leopard. The error read something like "boot camp failed to partition drive because some files could not be moved, re-install OSX...". Seems to be a relatively common error, some have achieved a work around by not having to do a complete re-install of Leopard by deleting certain files (please share if you have done this). Others just decided to do a complete re-install, that worked fine for them and then they were able to use boot camp and partition...
My question is, will my MacBook still be partitioned if do the following:
    1. Backup my entire MacBook using Time Machine to my new never used external drive.
    2. Erase and re-install Leopard on my macbook, end up with a fresh Leopard OS.
    3. Partition my my MacBook HD
    4. Use time machine to recover my macbook the way it was before the re-install

Ok so correct me if I'm wrong here, this is my situation...
My MacBook has never been partitioned. I recently UPDATED my MacBook with Leopard. I tried to partition the HD with bootcamp and it didn't, the error has something to do with some files that could not be moved. I have an external drive that should be arriving soon that I plan on using with my macbook. I also want to partition my HD to use windows on my macbook.
Now, my 2 questions. Should I not use Time Machine with my external drive to rely on all my files being returned to me after I erase and re-install Leopard? What is the easiest way for me to get my MacBook to the way it was before I do this erase and re-install. Because erasing right now seems to be the only way for me to use bootcamp and windows on my machine...

  • Partition Issue when installing XP SP2

I have an OEM disk for Win XP PRO SP2. When I reach the point in the installation where it asks me to select a partition all I see is one giant partition that equals the size of my entire HDD. When I use my OSX install disk and use the disk utility, I see three partitions, one of which is BOOTCAMP. How do I get XP to see these partitions? Or better yet, is there a way to back out of this without deleting everything I have in OSX?
If I hold down the Option button at startup the only thing to pick from is the CD I have in the CD Drive. Am I already screwed?

My OEM disk was a DELL disc. I have used this disc to install windows using Parallels and it worked fine. Here's what I have found...
If you are about to install Windows via Boot Camp make absolutely certain that a)the partition you about to install to is labeled as "Boot Camp" and b) the size of the partition matches exactly what you created with the boot camp assistant. If there is a mismatch on either or both, STOP IMMEDIATELY! If you don't stop, then windows will begin trying to install itself on top of your OSX platform and will do much damage.
If you think your mac is hosed, do this. Buy yourself an external hard drive, preferrably the same size as your internal hard drive. Insert your OSX installation disc and install OSX to the external HDD (yes, mac will boot and run from the external). Be sure to select the "GUID" format under "partition/options." Get yourself a copy of TechTools Pro V4 by Micromat. Use the recovery features to attempt to get your data back. In my case windows actually wrote its files over my mac files and TechTools helped me recover over 650 MB worth of pictures that I didn't have backed up. Considering what happened to me I believe TechTools is AMAZING! Retreive and sort your files on the external. Once you are satisfied that you have recovered everything you can, format your internal drive and reinstall OSX (be sure to disconnect your external so that you don't accidentally format it too. Now, copy everything back to the internal. Finally, with that you external you have, use time machine to periodically back your system up.
