Error code 0xc0000185 on laptop

When I turn on my laptop I get a black screen and nothing happens, if I push some of the F keys I will get something in the lower left hand corner, then today I got an error code on a blue screen, error code 0xc0000185 for about 2 minutes then the blue screen went away??  Help.

The "0xc0000185" error is commonly caused by incorrectly configured system settings or irregular entries in the Windows registry.
Unfortunately, the best way to fix this is to do a system restore.
Although I work for HP, my post's and replies are my own opinion. I am not an official HP spokesperson.

  • Black screen. Now saying Error code: 0xc0000185

So I'm not sure what to do anymore. I am a college student taking 3 online classes, with no laptop! I was watching a movie on it about a week ago, when it suddenly went black. So like the genius that I am, I turned it off and turned it back on. my screen was still black. Anyways, the laptop is now telling me that it needs to be repaired.
    This is what it says:
"Your PC needs to be repaired
The boot configuration data for your PC is missing or contains errors.
    File: \EFI\Microsoft\Boot\BCD
    Error code: 0xc0000185
You'll need to use the recovery tools on your installation media. If you don't have any installation media (like a USB device) , contact your system administrator or PC manufacturer."
My PC didn't come with any type of disks. Can anyone tell me where I can get it or what else I can do? And yes I have already tried hard reset.

Perform hard disk diagnostics from the BIOS to be sure that your hard drive is healthy.
To perform a Factory Restore, repeatedly tap the F11 key at boot to enter the recovery manager, follow the screen instructions.
If the above does not work you will have to order recovery disks.  If you live in the USA/Canada, call this number...  1-800-334-5144.
If you do not live in the USA/Canada, call the HP business PC support number for the country you live in.

    Recovery
Your PC needs to be repaired
The boot configuration data for your PC is missing or contains errors
    File:\EFI\Microsoft\Boot\BCD
    Error Code: 0xc0000185
You'll need to use the recovery tools on your installation media.... etc etc
Press ESC for UEFI Firmware Settings
When I press ESC i get some options F1 system information etc
I have tried all of these options and nothing works.
    Any help welcome.

    Ho Aduffyqs,
Here is some info on fixing a corrupted UEFI Partition:
Firstly, boot from a Windows 8 recovery drive (CD/DVD/USB). If you don't have a recovery drive (and this is likely because most new machines don't come with one), then you will either have to install the drive into another Windows 8 machine or obtain a Windows 8 recovery drive, or boot from the recovery partition of the boot drive (If this option works at this point). Don't even bother with the automated recovery process, it will not work as it cannot find a Windows partition.
You will need to choose the language and time settings.
    Choose 'Repair Your Computer'.
    Choose 'Troubleshooting'.
    Choose "Advanced Options'.
    Next choose 'Command Prompt'.
Next, we're going to use the DISKPART tool to verify that the UEFI partition has a drive letter assignment.
    Enter 'DISKPART' (Enter)
(In this test case we removed all other drives except the boot HDD and DVD, so we know the disk 0 is our boot HDD)
    DISKPART> sel disk 0
Disk 0 is now the selected disk.
    DISKPART> list vol
There was no drive letter assignment to our UEFI partition (volume 3) so we need to assign a drive letter.
    DISKPART> sel vol 3
Volume 3 is the selected volume.
1). If you know that you have a extra drive letter available use it here, otherwise skip to 2.
         DISKPART> assign letter=E:
2). If you are unsure what the drive chain is or if you don't know what drive letters are avalable use:
         DISKPART> assign
If all went well, DiskPart successfully assigned the drive letter or mount point. You can verify that a drive letter was assigned by "DISKPART> list vol" again.
    Exit DiskPart tool (Enter EXIT)
Next, we need to change to the boot folder on the UEFI volume.
Change to the UEFI volume into the boot folder. Use drive E: here or whatever drive letter was assigned above.
    cd /d E:\Boot\
Now we will need to enter three command lines to repair the BCD store.
For MBR drives: (Drives < 1TB)
    bootrec /fixboot
    bootrec /fixmbr
    bootrec /rebuildmbr
For GPT drives: (Drives > 1TB)
    bootrec /fixboot
    bootrec /rebuildbcd
That's it, if all went well the BCD store should be repaired, and the system will once again boot.

  • Toshiba L855-S5309 getting Error Code 0xc0000185

where you able to figure it out, i am currently having the same issue...

    Jerry_Lippey wrote:
Satellite L855-S5309  Try this. First shut down the computer completely this way. With the battery and AC adapter removed, close the power button for 30 seconds. Re-attach those. Restart the computer by pressing the power button and immediately start tapping the F12 key until a Boot menu appears. If you get that, use the arrow keys to select <HDD Recovery> and press Enter. On the next screen you are asked to confirm if you want to continue with recovery. Select Yes (Nothing will be lost.) The computer should bring you to the Advanced startup screen. If you get this far, come back here for more. This machine is under warranty, right?I reached the point where I click yes to enter recovery mode and i get the same blue screen. Im at my wits end. I do need to try and back the computer up. Will removing the hard drive for a short period void my warranty, Im hoping that it doesnt but dont want ot run the chance. Can you give me a bit of clarity on that as well. Thanks

  • RECOVERY LOOP: (Error Code:0xc0000185) PC doesn't load my operating system windows 8.

    Hello,
About 3 weeks ago my just over a year new laptop took a fall onto the carpet from 4 feet above... my screen was cracked so I ordered a new one and put it in yesterday. Now, I am having problems. I start up my laptop, the HP logo with a timer circle is spinning below it, then it says " your Pc ran into a problem and needs to restart", it restarts and then it says, " Recovery- Your PC couldn't start properly. A required device isn't connected or can't be accessed. Error Code: 0xc0000185." With a bunch of other stuff written below it.. I have tried all the prompts possible. I did do a HP PC HARDWARE DIAGNOSTIC UEFI test, both the short and extended one. It says FAILED - Failure ID: GLXS3H-6MF76S-MFPWWJ-60S603, with the Product ID: C5E40UA#ABA then right below HARD DRIVE 1.
My lap top will not go into the windows screen now at all. I am guessing the fall my lap top took did some damage to the hard drive and that is the internal problem now. I did look at a video on how to take the hard drive out and I did unplug, remove battery, and take it out and took the controller board off, check to make sure nothing was lose or broken, and put back together and reinserted it into my laptop and I am still having the same loop as above happening.
    INFO about my laptop:
    -HP Pavilion G7-2247us Notebook 17.3"
    -Windows 8
    -750 GB Hard Drive
If you need any other information let me know and I will send it your way. I appreciate any help you give in advance.

  • Error Code 0xc000185

Two weeks ago I purchased a brand new HP notebook HP 15-p091-sa as a Christmas gift for my son.  I'm dismayed to find that it is already displaying the following message on a blue screen:  "Recovery - Your PC needs to be repaired.  A required device isn't connected or can't be accessed.  Error code: 0xc000185.  You'll need to use the recovery tools on your installation media.  If you don't have any installation media (like a disc or USB device) contact your system administrator or PC manufacturer".  Having searched the internet, there is nothing that I can find about how to fix this error code and the HP website isn't proving to be of much help either as it doesn't give any indication as to what the problem is. To make matters worse, I didn't get any installation media with the notebook so don't have a clue as to how to fix the problem.  Any ideas on how to fix much appreciated.

Usually first thing to try out is to do a quick and extensive hard drive tests:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=in&lc=en&docname=c03467259
Then if no failure occur on completion, you could use Recovery partition in your laptop hard drive or order a Recovery media directly from HP for repairing the Windows.

But since the laptop is new and only 2weeks old, I suggest you contact the dealer directly informing them of the problem & get replacement unit if you can.

  • I am unable to update, uninstall, or reinstall iTunes on my laptop.  Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bits.  Error code is 2330.  Can somebody please help me?

I am unable to update, uninstall, or reinstall iTunes on my laptop.  Everything was working fine until recently when there was an update available for iTunes, and when I tried to update this, I got the message, "The installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package.  This may indicate a problem with this package. Error code is 2330."  Can somebody please help me?
    System configuration:
    Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bits.
    Version:  6.1.7601 Service Pack 1 Build 7601
    System Directory:  C:\Windows\system32
    RAM:  1.00 GB.

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, need to revert to an older version or want to try the iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) release as a workaround for installation or performance issues, or compatibility with QuickTime or third party software.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there are also links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.

If your intention is to use the trial again it will not reset if you reinstall.  It will remain in its ran out state.
